Gene Unlocking: I Evolve Every Day

Chapter 87: Chapter 79: President Liu’s True Feelings

After accompanying Fiery Baby, it was around eight o’clock in the evening.

Lu Li drove back to Diamond Home and entered Liu Kexin’s mansion.

Even though he left the company, having made such a significant contribution today, staying one more night shouldn’t be an issue.

As for what comes next, Liu Kexin will probably ask to have her keys back.

After all, he has left the company, so how could he just stay without leaving?

With these thoughts, Lu Li walked into the living room.

He saw Liu Kexin having dinner.

As usual, she wore light makeup and a business suit, keeping her head down as she handled some documents.

Perhaps she heard the door open.

Liu Kexin looked up with a bit of surprise and a hint of expectancy in her eyes.

As Lu Li noticed her looking at him, he was about to greet her.

Unexpectedly, before he could say a word, Liu Kexin, eyes filled with delight and a broad smile, greeted him, ”You’re back, want to grab a bite together?”

Lu Li thought she’d ask why he was here again and had intended to cheekily say he wanted to stay another night.

To his surprise, she didn’t ask and even seemed concerned about whether he had eaten.

Honestly, Lu Li was a little surprised.

He walked to the dining table and saw four dishes and a soup laid out.

Sweet and sour pork, sautéed broccoli, braised beef with potatoes, stir-fried bamboo shoots with pork, and tomato egg soup.

The food looked decent, and Lu Li sat down, smiling as he said, ”Sure, let’s eat together.”

Liu Kexin turned her head and called out, ”Aunt Huang, please bring a bowl of rice and a pair of chopsticks.”

Aunt Huang’s voice came from the kitchen, ”Got it, coming right up.”

Moments later, Aunt Huang came with the bowl and chopsticks.

As she placed them in front of Lu Li, she muttered, ”Miss Liu waited for you quite a while, the dishes got cold, so I reheated them. She was worried that you...”

”Aunt Huang!”

Liu Kexin’s voice suddenly rose by an octave.

Aunt Huang quickly stopped and pointed to the kitchen, ”Haha, Mr. Lu, eat quickly while it’s hot. I’ll get back to my work.”

With that, she went back to the kitchen.

Lu Li blinked and looked over at Liu Kexin’s delicate face.

Was it just his imagination or did he clearly see Liu Kexin’s cheeks turn red, pretending to focus on her food?

Stayed up late waiting for me?

That can’t be right.

Today, my friends said I had quit, and I didn’t come back the last two nights either.

Logically, she would have thought there was an eighty percent chance I had moved out.

Then why did Liu Kexin wait to have dinner with me?

Besides, even if I hadn’t moved out, there’s no real reason for her to wait.

Lu Li sensed something unusual.

As he picked up a piece of sweet and sour pork, he activated his Mind Reading Technique, probing, ”President Liu, have you been waiting for me for long?”

With her head down, Liu Kexin denied categorically, ”No, don’t listen to Aunt Huang, she’s making things up.”

Her inner voice echoed simultaneously: ”I waited for you for over an hour, just wanted to see more of you. Thought you wouldn’t come back. Thank goodness you did. La la la, sharing hot soup, the two of us, two spoons, one bowl...”

Hmm, the ’la la la’ part is her soul singing Liang Jingru’s ’Warm’.

Huh?

You want to see more of me?

Seeing me return makes you happy enough to sing ’Warm’ inside?

Lu Li suddenly became curious, pondering whether Liu Kexin liked him.

He took a mouthful of rice, swallowed, and continued his probing, ”President Liu, stop denying it. Aunt Huang wouldn’t just make this up. Honestly, why were you waiting for me?”

”I told you I wasn’t waiting.” Liu Kexin looked up, appearing calm, ”Do I look like someone who’d wait to have dinner with you?”

Liu Kexin’s inner voice: ”Just wanted to have dinner with you, what other reason could there be?”

Lu Li suddenly asked, ”Could it be that you like me?”

Liu Kexin’s inner voice seemed surprised: ”How did he know? It’s all Aunt Huang’s fault for spilling the beans. Oh no, oh no, he found out! What do I do? How should I respond?”

The next moment, Liu Kexin straightened her face and said, ”What are you thinking? How could I possibly like you.”

Oh!

She actually does like me?

Lu Li suddenly felt amused.

Keeping a straight face, he said, ”Alright, alright, I’m being narcissistic.”

Liu Kexin replied, ”Don’t think just because you’re handsome, everyone will like you.”

Lu Li hadn’t finished probing, ”Since I’ve quit the company now, maybe we won’t see each other much in the future. Why don’t you tell me your impression from when we first met up until now?”

As the subject came up, Liu Kexin’s eyes distinctly dulled.

Yet, stubbornly, she said, ”No particular impression, apart from being handsome and capable at work. I don’t know much else.”

Liu Kexin’s inner voice: ”The first time I saw you, I thought you were too handsome, so I deliberately ignored you to attract your attention. Later, I didn’t expect you to be an employee at our company, so I planned to make things difficult for you on purpose to leave a deeper impression. Then... when you were finally exasperated, I’d offer you another chance to stay at the company. Who would’ve thought your responses to the tests were all perfect.”

”Otherwise, why do you think I often find excuses to invite you out? And let you stay at my place?”

”Sigh, now that he’s moving out, I really won’t see him anymore.”

So you were the one simping all along!

Lu Li really didn’t expect that the other party had already ”fallen for his looks” the first time they met.

All this time, he thought she wasn’t a woman who could be attracted to.

Turns out, that wasn’t it at all!

Liu Kexin’s inner thoughts were very playful, a bit like a middle school girl, seemingly trying to attract the attention of a boy she has a crush on by acting the opposite way.

Lu Li remembered Liu Kexin had mentioned to him before that due to family reasons, she supposedly had no right to choose her partner.

That being said, it’s highly likely she never dated anyone from childhood till now, which is why she’s using such a childish method to get his attention?

If it were a woman with some dating experience, she definitely wouldn’t do this.

For example, Fiery Babe, when she wanted to flirt with him, she’d scratch his hand when shaking hands.

Or take this morning for instance, Lu Yao directly touched his abs and even hugged his neck to blow on him after Vice President Du left.

These methods are definitely more mature than Liu Kexin’s.

Lu Li continued to analyze her inner thoughts, and the last thought seemed a bit sad as if she was reluctant to see him go.

She actually doesn’t want me to leave?

Lu Li felt very excited by this.

He secretly thought that since Wang Yu occupied his place, it’s very likely he installed some covert surveillance device, making life uncomfortable.

Since Liu Kexin doesn’t want me to leave, should I just shamelessly stay and slowly break through her psychological defenses, making her admit she likes me?

It’s improbable for someone with no dating experience to directly admit it, a deeper connection is needed.

Lu Li secretly resolved to stay.

He first turned off the Mind Reading Technique.

After all, this skill drains a lot of Spiritual Power.

If kept on continuously, it would be very exhausting afterward.

Then, he feigned a long, melancholic sigh, ”Sigh.”

Sure enough, Liu Kexin pretended to ask with casual concern, ”Why are you sighing?”

Lu Li picked up the cup and walked to the water dispenser, extending his hand to press the button to get water, ”Didn’t I just resign from the company, according to our agreement, I should move out tonight, but a friend of mine just got transferred to the city from a rural area yesterday and hasn’t had time to find a place. I let her stay at my house. If I move out tonight, I’d really end up on the streets.”

Mm, Wang Yu just came today.

Lu Li said it was yesterday to be able to keep staying here.

He filled the cup halfway with water.

He turned and walked toward the dining table.

Liu Kexin blinked and asked, ”Is your friend male or female?”

Lu Li knew she’d ask, deliberately mumbling, ”What if it’s a girl? What if it’s a guy?”

”If it’s a guy, you two can squeeze in.” Liu Kexin didn’t seem to have any intention of asking him to stay, ”If it’s a girl, that’s inconvenient, but you can stay at a hotel.”

Lu Li sat down, speechless, ”Are you really okay with me staying at a hotel? I’ve contributed a lot to the company and even got rid of Vice President Du who was a thorn in your side.”

”Speaking of Vice President Du, he really overstepped,” Liu Kexin changed the subject, ”Based on the intel you provided, I contacted a top accounting firm, and after over an hour, they found some discrepancies in the books. Without your tip-off on where exactly the problem was, we might not have discovered the accounting issues for a long time.”

Lu Li stayed silent, just listening quietly.

Liu Kexin seemed full, set down the chopsticks, and gently tapped the table, making a light ”thud” sound.

She continued, ”In the end, it was discovered that he embezzled over 160 million from the company, most critically, he colluded with the finance department. Without your warning, who knows how much more would be embezzled.”

She mentioned his ”hint” twice.

Although Lu Li had turned off the Mind Reading Technique, he vaguely guessed what she would say next.

Indeed, as he predicted, Liu Kexin shifted her tone, ”So, regarding this, you truly have made a great contribution. I’m not one to forget favors. Since you have nowhere to go now, well, you can continue staying here for the time being. When your place is empty, you can move back.”

Lu Li smiled.

He guessed long ago that Liu Kexin wanted him to stay but would find an excuse to cover it up.

This woman really says one thing and means another.

Appears indifferent on the surface.

But deep down, she does have a bit of a crush on this guy.

Since she’s willing to let him stay, it would be much easier from here on.

Lu Li figured, as long as he kept getting closer to Liu Kexin, she would one day admit she liked him.

When that day comes, he’d finally achieve his wish!

Thinking this lifted his spirits further.

He initially thought he’d just crash for one more night, and wouldn’t have many chances to interact after.

Who would’ve thought she actually wanted him to continue staying?

And even suggested he could stay as long as his room wasn’t vacant.

Whether my room is empty or not.

Isn’t that entirely up to me?

After this exchange with Liu Kexin and eavesdropping on her inner thoughts.

Lu Li felt for the first time that getting into her heart wasn’t just a one-sided fantasy, but a real possibility!
