Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 239: Volume 4, Chapter 25, Betrayal (5)_2

Within the Gazalin Nobles Circle, Susan and Bonnie are like the two most dazzling pearls. Wherever they go, their radiance can overshadow other women. This has caused Susan and Bonnie, two beauties of completely different types—one warm, the other cold—to share one common trait: they have enough confidence to support their pride.

Bonnie’s pride is a cold one that keeps people at a distance. In her eyes, apart from Reinhardt, there is no one worthy enough to make her look twice.

But Susan is different. This warm and cheerful Imperial Princess can become friends with anyone. However, until she discovers qualities in you that are worthy of respect and affection, she will not show her true self. Her innate confidence makes most people feel inferior. It is a kind of elegant yet approachable pride that makes people automatically keep their distance.

Ann Lei, who is not from the Gazalin Nobles Circle, became Susan’s best friend.

The reason is not just Ann Lei’s dance, which fascinates Susan, who also loves dancing. More importantly, as an Imperial Princess, Susan, who is overly exceptional, has few true friends. The truly exceptional people are lonely, and women are no exception. Bonnie at least has Reinhardt to accompany her, while the outwardly cheerful Susan often feels lonely. This loneliness is easily erased by Ann Lei, thanks to her dancing and natural charm. In Susan’s eyes, only girls like Ann Lei are real women. Her gentle and approachable nature is everywhere, like a hot spring, making everyone around her feel comfortable and warm.

”I heard that guy can dance really well!” Susan said mischievously, persistently following Ann Lei, chattering away: ”But he is a Fatty! I just can’t imagine what it would be like for this Fatty, who fell in love with Miss Ann at first sight, to dance!”

Ann Lei took a towel and wiped the sweat from her forehead, her face flushed as she replied irritably: ”Susan, you’re really annoying.”

Susan looked at herself and Ann Lei in the mirror and giggled: ”Did I hit the nail on the head, so now you’re angry out of shame?” She picked up the cup on the floor and drank water, her eyes still darting around.

Ann Lei snatched the cup from Susan’s hand and laughed: ”Yes, I’m angry out of shame! You’re not allowed to drink my water!”

Caught off guard, Susan choked on the water and coughed repeatedly, exclaiming: ”You wicked woman, trying to kill me!” She robbed Ann Lei of her towel to wipe her mouth without any courtesy. Angry, Ann Lei grabbed the towel and twisted it around her neck: ”You come here to dance but are too lazy to bring your own stuff. The club has water and towels, but you insist on using mine. I might as well kill you to avoid the trouble.”

Unyielding, Susan retaliated by tickling Ann Lei, and soon the two girls were laughing and fighting until they both collapsed weakly on the floor.

Using her elbow to nudge Ann Lei, Susan whispered softly: ”Leilei, do you really like him?”

Ann Lei remained silent, only folding the towel in her hand over and over.

Susan sighed and said: ”Father said if he goes through the trial and is proved innocent, he can be freed without a pardon. You know that espionage is a very serious crime in Gazalin.” She glanced at Ann Lei’s slightly reddened eyes, and wrapped her arm around Ann Lei’s: ”Don’t worry, there will always be a way. But I really don’t understand what’s good about this Fatty. You’ve only known him for a few days, and you’ve already placed your heart on him!”

Ann Lei sighed inwardly. That person is a spy, and her own identity is also hidden. The happiest people in this world should be those like Susan, who are carefree and never get involved in politics or strife. Studying philosophy and dance in university, with the title of a princess, and living a life at ease.

Ann Lei was lost in thought when Susan’s voice gently whispered in her ear: ”I really envy you, being able to travel alone freely, carrying a backpack, and appreciating the beauty and different cultures of each planet. When you’re tired, you can rest, and after resting enough, you can continue walking. On the journey, if you meet someone you like, you can give up everything to fall in love.”

Ann Lei couldn’t help but laugh out loud. Susan asked in surprise: ”Why are you laughing? I am serious.”

Ann Lei gently patted Susan’s beautiful and delicate face and smiled: ”I’m actually jealous of your carefree life, and you envy mine.”

Susan curled up her legs, placed her chin on her knees, and said softly: ”Why envy me? What’s there to envy about? Although I seem carefree, as long as I’m born in the Morton family, who can avoid being drawn into this vortex?”

Ann Lei quietly looked at Susan and listened to her softly reveal her heart’s secrets, ones she had never shared before: ”My brothers are constantly fighting openly and secretly. I just pretend not to know, but in Gazalin, this is already an open secret. Who doesn’t know about it? As for my father, he is always the high and mighty ruler, commanding Gazalin to fight one endless war after another. My mother died early. For me, family means only me alone.”

Susan turned to Ann Lei and smiled, showing a row of white and neat teeth: ”As for me, I always struggle to find a true friend. I realize I am born to be lonely.” She laughed and hugged Ann Lei’s neck: ”Luckily, I have you as my friend. So, you shouldn’t prioritize romance over friendship. Spend more time with me; that’s the most important.”

Ann Lei pinched Susan’s cheek and spat: ”When did I prioritize romance over friendship?”

Susan jumped up and laughed: ”You still deny it. Every time you think of that Fatty, you look completely distracted. Even when teaching me to dance, you lose focus. Hey, I’m paying for this, you know.”

Ann Lei stretched lazily on the floor, made a funny face, and said: ”I was born without much professional ethics, just lazy to cheat your money and infuriate you!”

Susan’s mouth hung open: ”My goodness, I never thought you would be like this. I originally had a plan to take you to see your lover... Now I have to reconsider...” Before she could finish, Ann Lei grabbed her, tickling her waist till she couldn’t stop laughing, unable to speak coherently.

While tickling Susan, Ann Lei laughed: ”I won’t let you keep me guessing. Will you tell me or not?”

Susan laughed so hard she couldn’t catch her breath and begged: ”I... stop... I’ll say it, I’ll say it...” Finally, when Ann Lei triumphantly drew back her hands, Susan glared at her: ”Still denying that you prioritize romance over friendship...” Seeing Ann Lei’s determined expression, Susan quickly jumped back a step and raised her hands in surrender: ”Alright, alright, I’ll tell you. In a few days, Abnosk Prison will hold a fighting competition, and all Gazalin Nobles will go. Although this competition traditionally doesn’t allow women to watch, I have a way to get us in.”

She mischievously winked at Ann Lei: ”At that time, I want to see how your lover performs. If he’s good, I might snatch him to be my Prince Consort!”

Ann Lei was too happy to pay attention to her, replying leisurely: ”Snatch him, you can forget it. At most, I’ll let you share some of the sweet moments—two women serving one husband.”

”Alright, Ann Lei, you...”

”Hey, isn’t that a tradition in the Gazalin Empire?”

”Don’t run... I’ll tear your mouth apart! Sharing sweet moments, how could you even say that... really...”
