Destined Entwining: Capturing My Devoted Beau

Chapter 1033: Chapter 486: First, Second, Third Encounters (First Update)_3

”But newspapers have all gone digital now... they’ve put all the old issues online too.” Lawrence Winters tapped the screen of her phone meaningfully with a finger.

Mrs. Fang looked a bit embarrassed, but she still straightened her back and said calmly, ”Yes, we got married twenty years ago.”

Lawrence nodded. ”Mr. Yu met Miss Tang’s mother thirty-five years ago when he was fourteen. Fifteen years later, which is to say twenty years ago, he married you, Mrs. Fang.”

”And according to what you said earlier, you two fell in love at first sight through a parental introduction, got engaged within a month, and married within a year. So counting backwards, you must have met twenty-one years ago.”

”So from the time Mr. Yu met Miss Tang’s mother thirty-five years ago to the time you met him twenty-one years ago, there’s at least a fourteen-year gap in between.”

”In those fourteen years, was Mr. Yu together with Miss Tang’s mother? If they really were together, then it’s not impossible that Miss Tang says he started something with her mother and then abandoned her.”

Lawrence said all this in one breath and felt a bit thirsty. She picked up the bottle of mineral water on the coffee table in front of her, twisted it open, and took a sip.

By this point, the livestream audience was thoroughly overwhelmed.

”Damn! I just wanted to watch a big Celestial Path Sect showdown, why do I feel like I’m watching the legal channel?”

”The one upstairs makes sense! I was literally waiting for someone to pick up a wooden block, slam it down, and shout: Court in session!”

”...But what’s with this Great Heavenly Master Winters digging into the guy’s past like this? No matter what, this Mr. Yu didn’t marry Miss Tang’s mother; he’s been married to Mrs. Fang for twenty years...”

...

These same doubts were echoing in the minds of the judges as well.

The host, uneasy, cut in at this point: ”Daoist friend Winters, does this question really have anything to do with the competition?”

Lawrence had to clear it up for him. ”Of course it does. As a client, if she provides false information, we can directly reject her commission.”

Mrs. Fang started to panic and said repeatedly, ”No! I didn’t give false information!”

”You didn’t directly give false information; you were misleading us.” Lawrence said evenly. ”If I hadn’t pressed further, the impression you gave us would be that you and Mr. Yu fell in love at first sight thirty-five years ago, and that Miss Tang’s mother never existed.”

Mrs. Fang’s face flushed again.

She tugged awkwardly at the corner of her mouth and said with a dry laugh, ”I honestly didn’t think this had anything to do with my commission.”

”Oh, it’s very relevant...” Lawrence said in a low voice. ”There’s always a first-come, first-served order to things, especially in relationships between men and women. Otherwise, how would the whole ’third party swooping in and taking over’ thing even exist? Don’t you agree, Mrs. Fang?”

Mrs. Fang: ”...”

Seeing Lawrence’s barbed comments, Mr. Zhuge hurried to smooth things over. ”Alright, even if that’s how it was, it only shows that Mr. Yu and Miss Tang’s mother had no fate as husband and wife. Mrs. Fang, why don’t you tell us again why you think Miss Tang is not an ordinary person? Or rather, that she is not a person?”

Lawrence burst out laughing again. ”Mr. Zhuge, are you trying to lead Mrs. Fang on? As for whether she’s human, I think we can cross that off the list. I conclude that Miss Tang is human.”

Having been interrupted by Lawrence again and again, even Mr. Zhuge’s good temper was wearing thin.

He darkened his expression and said, ”Daoist friend Winters, first, I am the one who accepted Mrs. Fang’s commission. Second, Miss Tang’s identity is still up for discussion. Third, this world is vast; humans are not the only intelligent beings...”

”Stop right there!” Lawrence made a time-out gesture and said with a smile, ”Mr. Zhuge, that sort of talk is fine for hoodwinking your believers, but today’s Celestial Path Sect competition is being livestreamed to a global audience, and we also have five scientist judges.”

”Before the scientific community has even found any intelligent beings other than humans, you coming out with such a thunderous proclamation—are you trying to compete for the next Nobel Prize?”

Mr. Zhuge: ”...”

He glanced at the drone and said steadily, ”Fine, maybe the term ’intelligent beings’ isn’t precise enough. Let me put it this way: the world is so big, we are not the only living creatures with intelligence. Is that acceptable?”

Lawrence nodded. ”Mm, much more rigorous. But I still have to add: according to relevant regulations in our country, no one is allowed to become a spirit after the founding of the nation.”

Mr. Zhuge was baffled. ”...What regulation is that?”

At this moment, the domestic netizens watching the livestream were already laughing so hard they were falling over.

”...What the hell do you mean, ’no becoming a spirit after the founding of the nation’!”

”This is for our protection as humans, you idiot upstairs! What are you laughing at! — Pff-hahaha — We usually don’t laugh... unless we can’t help it!”
