F1: The Speed Legend

The situation was evolving rapidly. The battlefield was shifting literally from second to second. Inside the Ferrari pit garage, the crew had barely registered the crushing realization of Leclerc’s catastrophic blowout. They didn’t even have a single microsecond to process the disaster before Kai completely shattered the established rhythm on the asphalt, violently throwing down a massive purple sector in Sector 2. A quick glance over their shoulders revealed the Ferrari pit crew erupting into frantic, hyper-coordinated activity.

And then!

One set of White Hard tires. Two sets of White Hard tires—

Despite the suffocating chaos and the terrifying adrenaline, the Ferrari mechanics maintained absolute, flawless discipline. They swarmed the pit box, moving exactly like a highly trained military unit, meticulously prepping two completely separate sets of tires.

What the hell kind of insane tactical trap was Kai trying to spring?

However, absolutely no one had the luxury of analyzing the strategy. The massive, sold-out grandstands suddenly erupted into a deafening, thunderous roar of pure awe and astonishment, drowning out all coherent thought. A massive new variable had just violently detonated on the asphalt.

”Sector 3. Kai sets another purple sector!”

”1:16.288!”

GASP!

Everyone in the paddock exchanged wild, utterly bewildered glances, simultaneously sucking in a sharp breath of freezing air.

It was universally understood: overtaking in Monaco was a mathematical impossibility. The circuit was incredibly short, violently narrow, and completely unforgiving. Even if a driver managed to locate a microscopic sliver of clean air and unleash their chassis, they would inevitably, almost immediately, violently slam into the back of a massive traffic jam. Because track position was the absolute, overriding priority, setting the fastest lap during the race was virtually meaningless. The vast majority of the grid absolutely refused to risk their machinery or burn their tire life attempting to set purple sectors.

During Qualifying, Hamilton had just violently shattered the absolute lap record with a terrifying 1:10.166. However, for Sunday’s race, the elite telemetry models universally predicted that the fastest lap would hover somewhere around the 1:15 mark, potentially even dropping into the 1:16s. It wasn’t that the cars were physically incapable of going faster; it was simply that there was absolutely no strategic benefit to pushing that hard.

Since the red lights went out, the leading pack had settled into a highly controlled, incredibly stable rhythm, consistently lapping between 1:17 and 1:18. The midfield pack was generally operating in the 1:19 range.

Even though Leclerc had been driving exactly like a man possessed, launching a series of brutal, hyper-aggressive overtakes, his actual single-lap pace hadn’t been astronomically fast. Overall, the race’s rhythm was being completely, tyrannically dictated by the man running in P1. Hamilton was the absolute master of the tempo. However, the cascading effect meant that every single driver’s individual rhythm inevitably choked the driver immediately behind them, slowly, methodically stretching the field apart.

This was the unique, suffocating reality of Monaco. It operated under an entirely different set of physical laws than any other circuit on the calendar.

And now?

Leclerc suffers a catastrophic disaster in Sector 1. At that exact microsecond, Kai is already deep into Sector 2. Despite witnessing his teammate’s disaster, Kai completely ignores it. He initiates a massive, berserker sprint, violently dropping consecutive purple sectors in Sector 2 and Sector 3, dragging his overall lap time down into the terrifyingly fast 1:16 range in a single, breathless surge?

Compared to the established, comfortable rhythm of the leading pack, he had just aggressively accelerated his pace by nearly a full second!

To be brutally accurate, Kai had successfully extracted that massive, one-second advantage using only two-thirds of the circuit’s total distance. That completely incomprehensible, terrifying display of raw pace sliced straight through the paddock exactly like a razor-sharp dagger.

A collective gasp of shock violently erupted.

”Whoa—”

”I mean...” Crofty took a deep, shuddering breath, completely failing to suppress his profound awe. ”Whoa. Kai is going entirely flat-out. He is violently shattering the established rhythm of this race.”

”Currently, the sky above Monaco is densely packed with heavy, ominous clouds. According to the official radar, we are not expecting any immediate precipitation within the next ten minutes, but every single team on the pit wall absolutely must remain on maximum high alert for the arrival of the rain.”

”Synthesizing all the available telemetry and the visual evidence, it appears Ferrari is launching a massive, highly aggressive preemptive strike. They are utilizing Leclerc’s catastrophic, unscheduled pit stop as the ultimate smokescreen. They intend to seamlessly transition straight into Kai’s scheduled stop, attempting a massive undercut in the brief, terrifying window before the rain officially arrives. They are trying to violently seize total, absolute control of the strategic narrative.”

”The 2019 iteration of Ferrari is undeniably projecting a completely different, terrifyingly aggressive posture.”

Once again, Ferrari was throwing the first punch. They were actively, violently attempting to hijack the entire race.

So far this season, this hyper-aggressive posture had secured a massive, miraculous victory in Shanghai, and delivered a highly effective result in Melbourne. In the other races, the ultimate results had admittedly fallen slightly below projections. Nevertheless, these occasional setbacks had completely failed to extinguish Ferrari’s absolute, burning determination to continue taking massive, high-risk gambles.

The Mercedes-Benz pit wall.

Toto Wolff remained perfectly composed, projecting an aura of absolute, icy focus. He was entirely unbothered.

Ferrari. Heh. Everything was unfolding exactly within the parameters of his predictive models. Having survived the chaotic, apocalyptic bloodbath at Interlagos last season, and having just endured Kai’s devious, manipulative trap in Shanghai... how could Wolff possibly be unprepared? He possessed his own highly calibrated internal compass. Even if Ferrari hadn’t aggressively launched this assault, Mercedes-Benz had absolutely zero intention of remaining passive.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Wolff’s fundamental psychological baseline was ’defensive offense.’ However, when the strategic calculus demanded that Mercedes-Benz execute a proactive, ruthless assault, he absolutely would not hesitate for a microsecond. Having spent years successfully neutralizing the combined, vicious political attacks from Christian Horner and Maurizio Arrivabene, Wolff had already repeatedly, conclusively proven his absolute ruthlessness.

Even before the race began, Mercedes-Benz had been deeply, profoundly concerned about the incoming rain.

Their ultimate, absolute dream scenario was for the Monaco Grand Prix to be ”agonizingly, mind-numbingly boring.” If the race devolved into a sterile procession, Hamilton and Bottas could effortlessly cruise to a flawless 1-2 finish. They didn’t care in the slightest if the global audience was yawning and falling asleep in front of their televisions. The only metric that mattered was securing maximum points. Therefore, they absolutely, fundamentally despised the arrival of catastrophic variables like rain.

Drawing upon the bitter, agonizing lessons learned at Interlagos, if Mercedes-Benz wanted to successfully navigate the chaos of the rain and maintain absolute, iron-fisted control over the race, they possessed two viable strategic options.

Option A: Pit extremely early. Secure their track position on fresh rubber, and patiently wait for the rain to arrive. This would allow them to maintain maximum strategic flexibility and dynamically respond to any sudden variables.

Option B: Massively delay their pit stops. Keep the cars out on the asphalt until the rain officially began falling, or until a Safety Car was deployed, and only then dive into the pits.

The most profound, critical lesson Mercedes-Benz had learned from the disaster in Shanghai was this: they absolutely must project an aura of terrifying, dominant aggression. They must constantly, violently seize the initiative. The only entity on the entire planet capable of defeating Mercedes-Benz... was Mercedes-Benz. They absolutely had to maintain a death grip on the strategic initiative, completely dropping their rivals and sprinting off into the distance.

And now, the very first massive, catastrophic variable had erupted—

Leclerc’s blowout!

Wolff instantly snapped to maximum high alert. His immediate, instinctual reaction was: Safety Car!

Because Leclerc’s violently shredding tire had deposited a massive amount of highly lethal carbon fiber and rubber debris across the racing line. The slightest miscalculation by another driver could easily trigger a massive, multi-car pileup. Race Control was undoubtedly currently evaluating whether to deploy localized yellow flags in Sector 1 to allow the marshals to sweep the track. Simultaneously, the FIA was constantly, nervously evaluating the necessity of deploying the full Safety Car.

In that exact microsecond, Wolff didn’t hesitate. He made his decision: Pit immediately.

If Mercedes-Benz chose to delay their pit stops, it meant they would be forced to survive on their rapidly degrading Soft tires. They might be forced to endure ten laps, or they might be forced to endure fifty laps. While tire degradation in Monaco was generally low, attempting to stretch the fragile Soft compound for fifty laps was mathematically impossible. The longer it took for the rain or the Safety Car to arrive, the more catastrophically disadvantaged their position became. It wouldn’t take long before they were completely defenseless, sitting exactly like helpless meat on a chopping block.

The risk coefficient was simply too massive.

Conversely, if Mercedes-Benz pitted immediately and swapped to the highly durable White Hard tires, they would successfully lock in their track position and continue to dictate the overall rhythm of the race.

However, Wolff was a master tactician. He didn’t issue the order immediately. He deliberately allowed Hamilton and Bottas to continue pushing for two additional laps. He was executing a calculated delay, waiting to see if the FIA would deploy the Virtual Safety Car.

As for Kai?

No. Wolff completely, utterly ignored him. Mercedes-Benz was actively preparing to violently seize total control of their own destiny.

The Red Bull pit wall.

Christian Horner narrowed his eyes, staring intently at the telemetry monitors. That bastard Kai... is he seriously trying to pull the exact same trick twice?

Last season, the sole, tragic victim of Kai’s legendary ’Super Overcut’ had been Daniel Ricciardo. The rest of the paddock might have forgotten the specific details, but Horner would carry that bitter memory to his grave.

But wasn’t Ferrari’s strategy simply too obvious? Too completely transparent?

Forget about Red Bull; Mercedes-Benz certainly wasn’t going to roll over and allow Kai to successfully execute another overcut without a massive fight. So, what exactly was Kai’s ultimate endgame?

Tap. Tap.

Horner lightly drummed his fingers against the desk. The massive, chaotic swirl of calculations and theories instantly coalesced into icy focus. He keyed the radio, issuing a crisp, definitive command. ”Maintain absolute focus on Mercedes-Benz.”

Without a shadow of a doubt, Ferrari was attempting to execute an elaborate tactical deception. But Red Bull absolutely refused to take the bait. Their sole objective was to mirror Mercedes-Benz. Ferrari was completely irrelevant. The true, lethal threats were Bottas and Hamilton sitting directly in front of them.

Straightening his posture slightly, a dark, predatory gleam flashed in Horner’s eyes. ”Pit crew, remain on maximum high alert. If Mercedes-Benz attempts a simultaneous double-stack pit stop, there is a highly probable window of vulnerability between Hamilton and Bottas. We need to be fully prepared to exploit that microscopic gap. Let’s see if our pit crew can execute a flawless, high-speed stop and steal a position for Max.”

Everything unfolded within the span of a few microscopic seconds. Every single member of the ’Big Three’ possessed their own massive, highly complex calculations. The invisible, lethal undercurrents were stretched to their absolute breaking point. The thick, suffocating stench of gunpowder completely saturated every single corner of the paddock.

And then, Crofty’s manic, explosive voice shattered the airwaves—

”Sector 1. Hamilton sets a purple sector!”

Three seconds? Five seconds?

In that blindingly short window of time, a rapid-fire sequence of critical decisions and precise commands had been beamed over the radio, instantly connecting the pit walls to the drivers. The massive shift in momentum was immediately visible—

Hamilton had officially shifted into push mode.

However, Hamilton had barely managed to register his purple sector before the record was violently shattered by Verstappen. And before anyone could even take a breath, Kai obliterated Verstappen’s time.

Three massive pace escalations within a two-second window. The sequence of events was so blindingly fast that Crofty completely failed to keep up with the commentary. Ever since Leclerc’s catastrophic blowout, the previously calm, entirely predictable race had violently exploded. It was exactly like kicking a massive hornet’s nest. The entire circuit was instantly plunged into absolute, chaotic bedlam.

”Sector 2. Bottas sets a purple sector!”

”Sector 2. Verstappen sets a purple sector!”

”Sector 3. Hamilton sets a purple sector!”

On the live broadcast feed, the purple timing graphics were aggressively, continuously popping up across the screen. Crofty didn’t even need to say a single word; the sheer volume of data vividly communicated the brutal, terrifying intensity of the dogfight.

And then—

”Hamilton claims the fastest lap of the race!”

”1:15.997!”

All the chaotic noise, all the surging adrenaline... it all violently detonated in this exact microsecond!

The thrill! This was absolutely, unimaginably thrilling!

This was particularly true because as Bottas, Verstappen, and Kai blasted down the main straight, the broadcast graphic did not update to show a new fastest lap. Hamilton had utilized this specific, highly visible metric to aggressively project his absolute, mountain-devouring dominance. The sheer fanaticism of the crowd could no longer be contained. It violently erupted exactly like an active volcano.

Even though there was no wheel-to-wheel combat, absolutely no words were required to understand the reality. The top four drivers were currently engaged in a brutal, high-speed, bayonets-drawn deathmatch. They were no longer simply driving in circles maintaining a stable, conservative rhythm. This was genuine, cutthroat racing. The lethal, suffocating tension generated by this high-speed pursuit was causing invisible sparks to fly through the air.

Just as the leading pack plunged into Sector 3, a heavily crippled Leclerc finally managed to limp his way back into the pit lane to swap his destroyed tires. He barely managed to exit the pits and rejoin the circuit before Hamilton blasted down the main straight, miraculously avoiding the ultimate humiliation of being lapped.

But at this specific moment, Leclerc was completely irrelevant. The absolute focus remained entirely on the leading pack.

”Sector 1. Hamilton sets a purple sector!”

”Sector 1. Kai sets a purple sector!”

”Sector 2. Bottas sets a purple sector!”

”Sector 2. Verstappen sets a purple sector!”

The heavyweights were trading massive blows. The top four drivers were locked in a brutal, uncompromising dogfight, refusing to surrender a single millimeter. Forget about the casual viewers; even Zhou Guanyu and Hubert felt their blood boiling with massive, unadulterated adrenaline.

Amidst the deafening roar of the engines, Hubert completely stopped breathing—

This was the lap!

Race Control had ultimately decided against deploying the Safety Car. Even the localized yellow flags in Sector 1 had only been displayed for a mere three seconds before the green flags were aggressively waved, officially signaling the resumption of normal racing conditions.

In other words, if anyone was genuinely planning to execute a strategic pit stop, it absolutely had to be on this exact lap. Delaying the stop any longer would cause the strategic value of the maneuver to rapidly, catastrophically decay until it vanished entirely.

Therefore, the ultimate, billion-dollar question was: Who was going to dive into the pits?

The brutal, psychological war of calculation and counter-measure was culminating right now!

Hubert’s eyes were wide as saucers, completely glued to the live broadcast monitor. The aerial camera provided a massive, sweeping overview of the circuit. It looked exactly like a cinematic masterpiece. It possessed a surreal, overwhelming grandeur.

—Hamilton dives into the pits!

—Bottas dives into the pits as well!

—Verstappen follows them into the pits!

The next car in sequence.

Kai. He blasts straight past the pit lane entrance, absolutely refusing to pit.

”Brilliant!” Hubert completely lost his battle with his emotions, violently clenching his fist and letting out a loud shout of triumph.

Everything had occurred at terrifying speed. The spectators in the main grandstand didn’t even have a microsecond to process the strategic implications. They simply craned their necks, staring intently down the long straight, desperately waiting for the first car to materialize from the haze. And then they saw it—

A blur of scarlet red!

What... what the hell was happening?!

Anya’s breath hitched violently in her throat. Before she even consciously realized what she was doing, her hands were balled into tight fists, and she was screaming at the top of her lungs. But her outburst wasn’t isolated. It perfectly synchronized with the massive, earth-shattering tsunami of sound that violently erupted from the Tifosi, completely drowning out the entire circuit.

”Ladies and gentlemen, exactly what are we witnessing right now?!”

”Kai has officially seized the lead of the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix!”

”Good god! Oh, sweet Jesus! I genuinely cannot believe what my own eyes are seeing!”

”Your eyes are not deceiving you, and your ears are not malfunctioning! Exactly as he did during the legendary 2018 Monaco Grand Prix, when every single one of his rivals simultaneously elected to pit, Kai stubbornly remained out on the asphalt! He is currently driving exactly like a man possessed, completely alone at the absolute front of the pack!”

”So, what exactly does this mean?!”

”Is Kai planning to pit on the very next lap, or is he aggressively attempting to execute another impossible ’Super Overcut’?!”

Wait a second. Was it theoretically possible that the Ferrari strategy department had suffered a catastrophic failure? Did they simply miscalculate the pit window? Did they completely fail to anticipate that Mercedes-Benz and Red Bull would all pit simultaneously, resulting in Kai missing his optimal window? Did they aggressively lay an elaborate trap, only to accidentally stumble directly into it themselves?

If this had happened to any other team, no one would seriously entertain that theory. The probability was astronomically low. But this was the infamous Ferrari ’Clown Show.’ With them, anything was possible, right?

The thought flashed through the collective consciousness of the paddock for a fleeting microsecond. But a second later, it was completely, violently swallowed by the massive, deafening roar of the crowd—

Kai was leading the race!

In stark contrast to the boiling, chaotic heatwave consuming the grandstands, the pit lane remained remarkably orderly and highly disciplined.

A sharp, calculating gleam flashed in Toto Wolff’s eyes. Ferrari... they were essentially a one-trick pony. The elaborate performance currently playing out on the asphalt was painfully simple. He saw straight through it instantly. There was absolutely no mystery here—

Could they possibly make the overcut attempt any more glaringly obvious?

Exactly like the infamous ’Monza Trick,’ it was the exact same, familiar playbook deployed over and over again. While the underlying logic that ’any strategy that secures the victory is a brilliant strategy’ was fundamentally sound, and utilizing deception was a perfectly valid tactic... continuously, stubbornly repeating the exact same maneuver simply proved that Ferrari possessed absolutely zero tactical imagination. They were entirely out of new ideas.

However, despite his profound, unconcealed contempt, Wolff absolutely refused to let his guard down.

Since Kai was so desperately eager to remain out on the track, Mercedes-Benz would happily oblige him. They would ruthlessly force Kai to stay out on the asphalt on that rapidly disintegrating set of Soft tires for the rest of eternity. They would trap him in an agonizing, impossible dilemma. He had lifted a massive rock solely to violently crush his own feet.

”Lewis, Kai is still out on track.”

”Copy.”

”Clearly, he has somehow confused you with Daniel.”

”That is genuinely hilarious.”

The radio exchange was brief and entirely unbothered. The Mercedes-Benz pit wall maintained absolute discipline, methodically executing their overarching strategy.

Simultaneously, the Red Bull pit wall was operating with identical precision.

However, Horner’s primary focus was slightly different. He didn’t even bother mentioning Ricciardo. ”Max, Kai is still out on track. Lewis and Valtteri are highly likely to violently escalate their pace. Ensure you match their rhythm.”

Verstappen’s sole, designated target was Bottas.

Verstappen’s sharp laugh crackled over the radio. ”So, he’s trying to play his little games again?”

’He’ was obviously a reference to Kai.

Despite the sarcastic banter, Verstappen’s concentration was absolute. He didn’t lose focus for a single microsecond. While the Red Bull mechanics were executing the tire swap, his eyes remained glued to his rearview mirrors.

Because the Ferrari pit box was completely empty, Verstappen had a crystal-clear, unobstructed view of the Mercedes-Benz pit box. Hamilton and Bottas had executed a simultaneous double-stack pit stop. The margin for error was compressed to the absolute theoretical limit. If the Mercedes-Benz pit crew suffered even the most microscopic hesitation during the tire swap, that was Red Bull’s golden opportunity.

If he could manage to successfully overtake Bottas inside the pit lane?

He would absolutely, ruthlessly take it!

If he succeeded, the exact second he exited the pit lane, his target would immediately shift to Hamilton. Kai was entirely, utterly excluded from Verstappen’s strategic blueprint.

Exactly as he had hoped—

Verstappen noticed that the Mercedes-Benz pit crew appeared to suffer a microscopic hesitation. It wasn’t a catastrophic error, but Bottas’s release wasn’t flawlessly optimal.

The opening!

Verstappen didn’t hesitate. He violently cranked the steering wheel, aggressively attempting to beat Bottas to the fast lane and secure the track position. But his acceleration was a fraction of a second too slow. Bottas was already rolling past. However, Verstappen absolutely refused to lift off the throttle. Adopting a posture of pure, unadulterated, tyrannical aggression, he bullied his way into the fast lane, violently shoving his chassis directly into Bottas’s path.

And then—

”Kai, there has been a massive collision in the pit lane. Verstappen and Bottas made heavy contact. This is your opportunity!” The accident had unfolded directly in front of Borreipaire. He had viscerally felt the physical shockwave and the violent concussive sound of the impact.

But there was absolutely no time for concern. Borreipaire immediately relayed the critical intel to Kai. If Verstappen and Bottas were both bogged down dealing with the fallout of the collision, Kai’s overcut target list had just been reduced to a single name.

Hamilton!

Kai’s voice crackled over the radio. ”Ah, what a shame. I missed the spectacular highlight.”

Despite the supposedly ’regretful’ tone, it was glaringly obvious he was thoroughly enjoying the chaotic spectacle.

Out on the asphalt, the magnificent, breathtaking visual of Kai leading the Monaco Grand Prix had managed to capture the global spotlight for merely a fraction of a second before the massive pit lane collision violently hijacked the entire narrative.

”No...” Wolff desperately attempted to maintain his icy composure, but he ultimately failed. ”No, no, no, no, no, no.”

Moments ago, when faced with Ferrari’s sudden, highly aggressive tactical maneuver, Wolff had maintained perfect, flawless control over his emotions. He hadn’t exposed a single crack. Yet, he completely lost his mind when confronted with Verstappen’s sheer, unreasonable aggression.

This single, chaotic accident possessed the terrifying potential to completely, violently derail Mercedes-Benz’s entire master plan.

Wolff had absolutely had enough!

It wasn’t just Wolff.

Christian Horner’s breath hitched violently in his throat. He stared at the chaotic wreckage unfolding behind him with an expression of profound, utter bewilderment—

This wasn’t an act. To be brutally honest, there were many, many moments when he genuinely, fundamentally failed to comprehend the neurological wiring inside Verstappen’s brain. His tactical judgments and in-the-moment decisions frequently bordered on the utterly incomprehensible.

However, this was absolutely not the time for an internal investigation.

After a brief, agonizing moment of burying his face in his hands, Horner successfully regained his icy composure. His very first action wasn’t to scream at or interrogate Verstappen. He immediately keyed his radio to establish a direct comm link with Race Control.

The guilty party always strikes first. ”Valtteri Bottas executed a highly dangerous, unacceptable release that severely threatened the safety of the entire pit lane! The stewards must issue an immediate, severe penalty!”

Horner was a master of his craft. He effortlessly inverted reality, painting black as white, and presented the violent aggressor as the innocent victim with absolute, unwavering conviction.

However, Horner was currently sparring against Toto Wolff.

For years, the paddock had constantly joked that the FIA was essentially a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. This reputation wasn’t entirely baseless. The FIA’s rulings frequently, undeniably favored the Silver Arrows. Even Ferrari had been forced to swallow countless bitter, highly questionable penalties.

Mercedes-Benz’s terrifying dominance absolutely wasn’t restricted solely to the asphalt.

The current situation was exactly the same.

Wolff didn’t lose control. He fiercely gripped his rationality, getting on the radio with Race Control to violently lobby for Mercedes-Benz’s interests, forcefully articulating his case.

The FIA immediately announced an official investigation into the incident—

It didn’t take long. Ten seconds? Twenty seconds at most! The official ruling was issued.

Verstappen was deemed guilty of a dangerous release and an unsafe merge, violating fundamental pit lane safety protocols. However, because the incident did not result in a catastrophic, race-ending accident, he was handed a five-second time penalty.

A penalty had undeniably been issued, but a five-second penalty was essentially a slap on the wrist. It was completely insignificant.

Horner was furious. On a highly claustrophobic circuit like Monaco, a five-second penalty was a massive, insurmountable chasm. He firmly believed the FIA had overreacted.

Wolff was even more furious. The absolute minimum punishment should have been a ten-second penalty or a mandatory drive-through. The FIA was desperately trying to play the peacemaker, refusing to issue a genuinely punitive ruling. Verstappen hadn’t simply ’made contact’ with Bottas. He had actively utilized his Formula 1 car exactly like a bumper car! He had violently shoved Bottas directly into the pit lane wall, utilizing sheer, tyrannical, unreasonable aggression to force an illegal overtake!

And a few moments after the FIA officially issued their ruling, Wolff erupted into pure rage once again!

Because Bottas’s front wing had sustained critical damage from the impact.

The weather was shifting rapidly. The entire board was violently inverting.

Lap 9: Leclerc suffers a catastrophic blowout.

Lap 11: The leading pack, entirely dictated by Hamilton, executes a mass pit stop. The secondary pack, led by Ricciardo, simultaneously dives into the pits. Kai stubbornly remains out on the track, seizing the undisputed lead of the Grand Prix. Verstappen and Bottas engage in a violent collision in the pit lane, resulting in a five-second time penalty for Verstappen.

Lap 12: Bottas is forced to limp back into the pit lane to replace his destroyed front wing.

In the span of three breathless, chaotic laps, the entire strategic layout of the race had been completely, violently shattered. Kai was now operating as a lone wolf, completely isolated at the absolute front of the pack. The track behind him was completely empty. It felt exactly as though he were on a private, solitary joyride through the streets of Monte Carlo. A massive twenty seconds further down the road, Hamilton and Verstappen were engaged in a brutal pursuit. Then came another massive, empty void on the asphalt. A significant distance behind them, Bottas and Ricciardo were finally visible, and it was only at this specific point that the midfield pack began to condense into a dense cluster.

However, further back, the formation was highly scattered and severely fragmented. The Monte Carlo circuit is the absolute shortest track on the entire F1 calendar, measuring a mere 3.340 kilometers. At this exact moment, virtually every single corner of the circuit was occupied by a car. It wouldn’t be long before the race leader, Kai, encountered massive, catastrophic backmarker traffic.

Executing an overcut was incredibly difficult! In the highly aerodynamic turbo-hybrid era, the statistical probability of a successful overcut was already astronomically low.

In Monaco, it was exponentially more difficult! Even if the backmarkers were fully cooperative and actively attempted to yield the racing line, there were incredibly few zones on this circuit where two cars could safely run side-by-side without violently scraping the barriers. If the race leader refused to accept massive, catastrophic risks, he was forced to patiently wait for a highly specific, safe overtaking zone to complete the lapping maneuver. And that was assuming the backmarker was actually cooperating.

It was precisely because of this massive, suffocating reality that the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix was so incredibly, unimaginably legendary!

Chaos. Layer upon layer of crushing pressure. It felt as though every single sector of the track was simultaneously catching fire. The frantic, rapid-fire switching of the broadcast cameras perfectly communicated the sheer panic—

They simply couldn’t keep up with the action!

Exactly as feared, another massive catastrophe erupted.

Lap 16: The notoriously lethal characteristics of Turn 1 finally claimed their victims, transforming the corner into a massive parking lot.

Russell, Perez, Giovinazzi, Hulkenberg, and Kvyat all became violently entangled at Turn 1. Although there wasn’t a massive, high-speed impact, the five cars became completely wedged together, physically blocking the entire width of the track. They were completely immobilized.

Under normal circumstances, resolving a traffic jam on the streets of Monte Carlo was already a massive headache. But dealing with vastly wider, highly complex Formula 1 cars that lacked a reverse gear... it was an absolute, unmitigated disaster. The five elite drivers looked incredibly clumsy and entirely helpless.

Perez was the first to miraculously untangle his car and escape. Russell and Kvyat were completely trapped, frantically spinning their steering wheels to no avail. Giovinazzi was pinned in the absolute center of the wreckage, completely powerless to move. Hulkenberg, stuck at the very rear, could do nothing but sit in his cockpit and seethe with frustration.

Catastrophe! An absolute, complete disaster!

And then, Leclerc arrived: ???

When it rains, it pours.

This entire Grand Prix weekend had been an absolute, unmitigated nightmare. Leclerc had finally managed to regain his icy composure. Having successfully swapped to the White Hard tires, he was fully prepared to initiate his massive, aggressive second stint and violently overturn his fortunes. And what exactly did he encounter on a Formula 1 circuit? A literal traffic jam?

You saw this type of amateur hour in F2 all the time, especially on street circuits. But in F1?

Leclerc was completely, utterly dumbfounded. He had fought so incredibly hard to catch up to the pack, only to discover the track was physically, completely barricaded—

He was absolutely powerless!

”Kai, Turn 1 has officially devolved into a parking lot. Double yellow flags are deployed.”

Borreipaire’s update caused Kai to momentarily freeze.

The situation was undeniably critical. Kai was currently attempting to execute a highly complex overcut. The success of this specific maneuver wasn’t reliant on absolute, single-lap raw pace; it was entirely dependent on maintaining a highly stable, consistently fast rhythm over a sequence of push laps to slowly accumulate a massive time delta. This sudden, chaotic traffic jam was absolutely not going to help him achieve that objective.

His moment of hesitation lasted for merely a fraction of a second. ”What about Charles? Was he involved in the pileup?”

Borreipaire replied instantly. ”He wasn’t involved in the initial collision, but he is currently trapped behind the wreckage.”

Kai asked, ”Uh—so, what exactly are we supposed to do now?”

In a highly rare, unprecedented moment, Kai genuinely didn’t have a definitive answer. This specific scenario clearly exposed the limitations of his relative lack of experience. He had absolutely never encountered a bizarre situation like this in his entire racing career.

Despite the incredibly tense, highly inappropriate timing, Borreipaire completely failed to suppress a quick, sharp laugh. ”The yellow flags are currently dictating the pace. If they fail to clear the track quickly, they will be forced to deploy the Red Flag, suspend the race entirely, and execute a restart.”

”Oh, a Red Flag!” Kai let out a soft exclamation of awe. ”Would the restart be dictated by our original Qualifying positions? Or would it be a rolling restart from the pit lane behind the Safety Car?”

A Red Flag meant the race was officially suspended. All cars would return to the pit lane. Once the track was cleared and the situation analyzed, the race would officially resume.

In Kai’s brief, meteoric career, he had never actually experienced a Red Flag scenario.

Borreipaire immediately clarified the regulations. ”Assuming the rain doesn’t arrive, it will be a standing start from the grid. The starting order will be determined by the exact running order at the moment the Red Flag was deployed.” In other words, Kai would start from Pole Position. ”Furthermore, under Red Flag conditions, we are officially permitted to swap your tires while you are waiting in the pit lane.”

Brilliant!

In other words, if a Red Flag was officially deployed, Kai would undeniably emerge as the absolute, undisputed victor of the chaos. He would be granted a completely free, zero-time-loss pit stop to swap his tires, and he would restart the race from Pole Position. As long as he successfully defended his lead into Turn 1, he could easily cruise to victory.

The scenario was absolutely, flawlessly perfect.

Clearly, this was the absolute last thing Mercedes-Benz wanted to see happen.

Inside the pit lane, both the Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari personnel completely stopped whatever they were doing. Their eyes were obsessively locked onto the live broadcast monitors. The razor-thin line separating absolute paradise from utter hell was currently dangling in front of them.

It lasted for a brief, agonizing moment. Three seconds. Five seconds—

The crisis was resolved.

Russell, Kvyat, and Hulkenberg miraculously managed to untangle their cars and rejoin the race. Leclerc was finally free to continue his pursuit. Giovinazzi, despite being completely dizzy and disoriented from the chaos, also finally managed to get his car moving. Turn 1 was officially clear.

The Mercedes-Benz pit wall broke out in a massive, collective cold sweat. Bottas’s catastrophic accident had already been incredibly depressing. They absolutely hadn’t anticipated hovering terrifyingly close to the edge of the abyss, nearly surrendering the entire Grand Prix on a silver platter due to a freak traffic jam.

The Ferrari pit wall erupted into a collective groan of profound disappointment.

Kai, conversely, was the most relaxed person in the entire organization. ”It appears our stockpile of good luck hasn’t been activated yet. We’re obviously saving it for a vastly more critical, truly lethal moment. Lady Luck clearly firmly believes that we are entirely capable of handling this specific situation on our own.”

”I am profoundly, deeply honored by Lady Luck’s absolute faith in my abilities.”

A single, perfectly timed joke successfully caused the entire Ferrari pit garage to shed their disappointment and erupt into loud, genuine laughter.

Especially when they glanced next door and saw the completely haggard, traumatized expressions of the Mercedes-Benz crew, who had just narrowly escaped death. The suffocating, heavy depression that had blanketed the Ferrari garage all weekend instantly vanished. The sun had finally broken through the clouds. Team morale skyrocketed!

From absolute paradise to utter hell, and then violently back to paradise. This massive, extreme emotional rollercoaster had occurred within the span of a few microscopic minutes. The continuous, violently disorienting shifts in momentum had finally forced the arrogant, completely composed Mercedes-Benz organization to expose their genuine, raw emotions. A massive, glaring crack had finally appeared in their supposedly impenetrable armor.

With Kai attacking from the front, Verstappen lurking aggressively from behind, the terrifying, omnipresent threat of rain, and the constant barrage of highly unpredictable chaotic variables... Mercedes-Benz had finally exposed a vulnerability—

It wasn’t a massive flaw, but it was absolutely sufficient.

In the brutal, cutthroat world of competitive sports, absolutely no one is permanently, undeniably invincible.

Absolutely anything is possible. That is the true, ultimate, transcendent inspiration of competitive sports. The agonizing, brutal process of fighting until the bitter end and relentlessly challenging the absolute limits of human capability is vastly more compelling and magnetic than the ultimate victory itself.

The Ferrari pit wall successfully regained their icy composure. The chaotic, buzzing focus of the entire team consolidated entirely onto Kai. The impending, massive overcut battle was the undisputed focal point of the entire race.

Hubert hadn’t even consciously realized it, but he had straightened his spine, leaning slightly forward. His heart was hammering against his ribs with a heavy, steady, powerful rhythm. Overflowing with eager anticipation and massive, burning passion, he was currently burning with the exact same hot-blooded adrenaline as Kai.

In truth, every single person in the paddock understood exactly how astronomically difficult the overcut maneuver truly was. Mercedes-Benz absolutely refused to repeat Red Bull’s catastrophic mistakes. But Kai was still stubbornly, relentlessly inching forward, violently hammering away at Mercedes-Benz’s impenetrable armor, desperately searching for that one-in-a-million opening.

So, why on Earth shouldn’t he keep fighting?

Hubert stared unblinkingly at the scarlet Number 22 Ferrari tearing across the live broadcast monitor. He felt his blood boiling. He had absolutely never realized that Ferrari red could be so incredibly, undeniably sexy.

The Mercedes-Benz pit wall noticed the shift in momentum instantly.

The Red Flag crisis had been successfully averted, but they absolutely lacked the luxury of time to celebrate. They needed to immediately lock their focus entirely back onto Kai. Bottas was completely useless in this specific scenario. Verstappen was aggressively, relentlessly stalking Hamilton, but because Verstappen was carrying a five-second time penalty, he wasn’t an immediate, lethal threat. Their absolute primary target remained Kai.

Until—

”No—”

Crofty genuinely couldn’t believe his own eyes. He completely failed to mask his profound sorrow and deep regret.

”Charles Leclerc has returned to the pit lane once again. It appears the chassis has sustained catastrophic, irreparable damage. The Number 16 car has officially retired from the Grand Prix.”

”Good god. The home-race curse strikes again. Poor, poor Charles Leclerc.”

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz. The airwaves were saturated with a massive wave of chaotic, overlapping noise.

Lap 16. Turn 1 devolves into a parking lot. Although the traffic jam was resolved relatively quickly, Leclerc’s chassis had apparently sustained critical damage. He had returned to the pit lane once on that exact same lap to allow the mechanics to execute some rapid, desperate adjustments before rejoining the race.

Leclerc absolutely, fundamentally refused to retire.

Last year in Monaco, with only six laps remaining in the entire race, he had been forced to retire due to a catastrophic brake failure. It had been a massive, soul-crushing blow. Although he logically understood that catastrophic failures were an inherent, unavoidable reality of motorsport, retiring at your home race was a profoundly, fundamentally different kind of agony.

Everyone in the paddock constantly joked about the ’Home Race Curse,’ the bizarre phenomenon where drivers consistently suffered catastrophic bad luck at their home events. But Leclerc genuinely, desperately wanted to shine brightly in Monaco.

Therefore, despite the desperate pit stops, Leclerc stubbornly attempted to continue fighting.

Unfortunately, the brutal, unyielding reality delivered another massive, heavy blow to the young prodigy.

This time, he only managed to survive for two laps. Leclerc returned to the pit lane for the third time. In today’s race, every single one of his pit stops had been dictated by catastrophic external factors, not by his own strategic choices or team tactics. This time was exactly the same. He had officially hit absolute rock bottom.

Retirement. DNF.

For the second consecutive year, Leclerc had failed to cross the finish line in Monaco.

”...” After Borreipaire relayed the devastating news to Kai, the radio channel went completely, agonizingly silent. In that endless, profound silence, one could practically physically feel the bitter, suffocating sorrow Kai was experiencing—

After all, Kai had personally endured that exact, agonizing nightmare in Shanghai.

”Kai. Maintain absolute focus,” Borreipaire warned, a highly rare note of sharp command in his voice.

Finally, Kai’s voice crackled over the radio. ”It appears my grand, overarching master plan to replicate Ayrton Senna’s legendary five consecutive Monaco victories is going to violently end next year. Charles is probably aggressively sharpening his blades right now. Please tell him to take it easy on me. I’m actually genuinely terrified.”

Leclerc! We’ll settle this next year!

One second. Two seconds. Completely unexpectedly, Leclerc’s voice crackled over the radio. ”You better [BEEP]ing keep that promise.” He paused. When he spoke again, his voice was heavy with profound defeat and agonizing frustration. ”Please. I’m begging you. You absolutely must win this race.”

For Hervé Leclerc.

A thousand complex, heavy emotions were violently surging in his throat, but Leclerc ultimately couldn’t force them past his lips. He simply repeated the single, absolute command. ”You must.”

The deafening, visceral roar of the V6 hybrid engines blasted past the pit wall, completely swallowing the pit lane. The brutal, unforgiving race absolutely did not slow down to accommodate Leclerc’s profound depression.

Massive chaos. Catastrophic variables. The Monaco Grand Prix was fully engulfed in a massive, terrifying storm. Even though Monaco was historically defined by chaos, this year felt exceptionally, violently aggressive.

However, miraculously, the Safety Car had not been deployed! The rain had not arrived!

Amidst the massive, violent fluctuations and the endless barrage of catastrophic surprises, the race was miraculously continuing to proceed without a major interruption. The tension on the pit walls was stretched to the absolute breaking point.

On one hand, they had to remain on maximum high alert for the sudden, unpredictable deployment of the Safety Car or the arrival of the rain. On the other hand, they had to meticulously monitor the highly complex, real-time strategic warfare currently unfolding on the asphalt.

—Kai officially initiated his push phase!

Exactly as predicted, and exactly like his phenomenal performance in Shanghai, Kai wasn’t prioritizing short-term, explosive pace. He was once again showcasing his absolute, terrifying mastery of long-run rhythm control. Even though he had completely shocked the world during his rookie campaign, it was glaringly obvious that Kai had never stopped learning and evolving. The ’Sophomore’ iteration of Kai was even more terrifyingly competent.

Currently, Kai was meticulously attempting to lock his single-lap rhythm directly onto the 1:16 mark. Hamilton and Verstappen, lurking aggressively from behind, immediately matched his pace.

An overcut?

No. Impossible. Absolutely mathematically impossible.

In Monaco, suffering from severe tire degradation wasn’t a catastrophic, race-ending flaw. A driver could successfully defend their position relying entirely on flawless positioning and defensive racing lines, especially a seasoned, elite veteran like Hamilton. Therefore, even though Mercedes-Benz and Red Bull had swapped to the White Hard tires extremely early on Lap 11, they currently possessed absolutely zero anxiety. They were entirely, obsessively focused on violently neutralizing Kai’s overcut attempt. As long as they successfully defended their track position, they would maintain absolute, total control over the entire race.

Ferrari noticed the defensive posture, but they remained completely unbothered. Kai stubbornly maintained his aggressive push rhythm.

Was this genuinely the entirety of their plan? Was Ferrari’s overarching strategy truly this simplistic? Had Mercedes-Benz effortlessly, flawlessly neutralized the threat, leaving Ferrari with absolutely zero backup plans?

Zhou Guanyu stared intently at the live broadcast monitor, his brow heavily furrowed. Operating on the asphalt, Kai genuinely didn’t appear to possess any alternative tactical options... right?

He turned to look at Hubert. Hubert shook his head. ”It absolutely cannot be that simple.”

Analyzing the current telemetry, Kai was undeniably trapped. He was currently occupying a highly awkward, deeply vulnerable strategic position. He was stubbornly remaining out on the track, continuously setting fast laps, but he was fundamentally failing to expand the crucial time delta. Therefore, the logical conclusion was that he was simply patiently waiting for a Safety Car deployment or the arrival of rain. He was desperately waiting for a catastrophic variable to shatter the equilibrium, allowing him to pit under chaotic conditions and successfully execute the overcut.

However, had Mercedes-Benz completely failed to anticipate this exact scenario?

Even if the casual fans had forgotten, Hamilton would absolutely never forget. It happened during the very first Grand Prix of Kai’s entire career. Last year, at Albert Park in Melbourne.

Because Mercedes-Benz had been wildly overconfident, operating under the absolute, arrogant assumption that Kai couldn’t possibly successfully execute an overcut... the exact second the Safety Car was miraculously deployed, Kai flawlessly seized the microscopic window of opportunity, dove into the pits, and successfully completed the overcut.

Ultimately, that specific strategic masterstroke had allowed Kai to secure a miraculous victory in his very first Formula 1 Grand Prix.

That specific race was permanently, violently burned into Hamilton’s memory.

Allowing that specific disaster to happen once was already unforgivable. Hamilton would absolutely never allow it to happen a second time. Furthermore, the terrifying near-miss with the Red Flag earlier in the race had already triggered massive alarm bells. Mercedes-Benz absolutely had to seize total control over their own destiny. Violent, proactive aggression was the absolute only viable solution.

Currently, there was absolutely zero traffic separating Kai and Hamilton. The track was completely clear. For Hamilton, this meant he possessed absolute, total control over his own rhythm. Conversely, Kai was rapidly approaching the backmarkers. He was about to be plunged into massive, turbulent dirty air and chaotic traffic jams. He was undeniably facing a vastly more complex, highly volatile scenario.

The underlying logic was incredibly simple.

”Kai. Hamilton is aggressively escalating his pace. 16.101.” Borreipaire immediately identified the critical shift in momentum.

Kai responded. ”Copy that. Pierre, initiate Contingency Plan G. Contingency Plan G!”
