F1: The Speed Legend

Wind noise, roaring engine, and hammering heartbeat. Everything fused into a singular, vibrating entity.

Absolutely no one in the main grandstand was capable of remaining seated. As if compelled by an invisible force, they all surged to their feet, standing on their tiptoes, leaning their upper bodies dangerously far over the railings, craning their necks to the absolute limit.

Amidst the swirling chaos and blinding brilliance of the Shanghai circuit, they desperately searched and explored... until finally, that vivid, blinding streak of red rocketed straight toward them.

In an instant, breath caught in their throats. The world hit the pause button.

Everything seemed incredibly slow, yet agonizingly clear. It felt almost stagnant, as if the world had shifted into extreme slow-motion, magnifying every single minute detail. You could clearly see the violent compression of the suspension and the frantic blur of the tires. Yet, simultaneously, it was so overwhelmingly ferocious, so violently unhinged. Like a bolt of lightning tearing through the atmosphere, human eyes were physically incapable of capturing a solid outline within the blurry afterimage. There was only a blazing ball of fire.

Time froze.

Before conscious thought could even process the image, that crimson arrow had already struck. It pierced straight through their chests, ripping out the other side. A violent, electrical numbness instantly shot from the soles of their feet straight to the tops of their skulls. Their knees buckled; they practically collapsed where they stood.

A brief, stunned silence.

And then, exactly one beat later, the concussive, deafening roar of the engine finally slammed into them like a physical wall of sound. It washed over them in a torrential downpour, completely soaking them from head to toe. The vibrations penetrated deep into their marrow, seeping into every single cell of their bodies.

Uncontrollably, their bodies trembled.

Minds went completely blank. For a brief, fleeting moment, they were utterly paralyzed by layer upon layer of overwhelming shock and awe. Pure instinct took over, desperately trying to track that vanishing red afterimage. As their heads whipped from right to left, the vivid scarlet streak bisected the entire main straight. The residual flames burning in the air left behind a blinding trail, instantly illuminating the entire world.

Thump. Thump.

The timing monitors flickered and updated.

In that singular instant, the entire world lost its voice.

The perfect synergy of raw speed and terrifying power, of surgical control and unbridled passion... it was exactly like a breathtaking Tango danced on the absolute ragged edge of peril and exhilaration. The endless, surging tension boiling in the air completely ignited their blood. It utterly eradicated all rational thought and logic from their brains. The only instinct left was to fall to their knees and worship at the altar of speed. It was an experience so profound, it completely defied verbal description. The only thing they could do was—

Stare at each other in absolute, dumbstruck awe.

They forgot to scream. They forgot to gasp. Immersed entirely in the sheer, overwhelming impact of the moment, they were completely rendered speechless.

So, this is true Formula 1.

The Fan Festival roadshow in Xintiandi was nothing more than a mild appetizer.

The roof of their skulls felt like it had been blown clean off. That electric numbness and violent trembling shot straight through the stratosphere.

And then... the eruption.

In the broadcast booth, David Croft had been passionately roaring into the microphone, but in a fraction of a second, he was violently swallowed whole by the rolling, explosive heatwave radiating from the track. The entire world seemed to shake violently, exactly like a massive earthquake. Instinctively, he had to grab the edges of his desk just to physically stabilize himself. His boiling blood ignited instantly, plunging him into a state of absolute, unhinged fanaticism.

”An unbelievable lap! An absolutely peerless, transcendental lap!”

”KAI!”

”The Defending Champion once again puts his terrifying, generational talent on full display! Executing a near-perfect, flawless lap, he successfully wrings the absolute, physical limit out of the SF90! He vaults to the very top of the timing sheets, temporarily securing Pole Position!”

”You heard that correctly—Provisional Pole!”

”Throughout this entire Shanghai Grand Prix weekend, Mercedes-Benz has once again showcased an unbelievable, terrifying level of absolute dominance. The W10 remains the undisputed benchmark that everyone in the paddock is desperately chasing. Practically everyone universally believed that Pole Position was going to be an exclusive, private battle between Bottas and Hamilton. The entire progression of Qualifying seemed to be definitively proving that point.”

”Up until this exact moment, Mercedes-Benz was the only team capable of breaking into the 1:31 bracket. Ferrari and Red Bull were the only two teams capable of breaking into the 1:32 bracket. The massive, glaring gaps clearly established a rigid, hierarchical chasm. Even though Renault and Haas managed to fight their way out of the chaotic midfield scrap, the insurmountable gulf separating them from the ’Big Three’ remained painfully obvious.”

”Until right now!”

”Kai violently shatters the established hierarchy! Riding the deafening roar of his home crowd, he becomes the third driver this entire Shanghai Grand Prix weekend to smash through the 1:31 barrier! An absolutely unbelievable performance!”

”Into a world where Bottas and Hamilton were fighting an exclusive, private duel, an uninvited intruder violently crashes the party! This Grand Prix weekend, which seemed destined to be a solitary, boring exhibition dance by Mercedes-Benz, has seen the flames of war violently reignited!”

”1:31.560!”

”With a microscopic advantage of 0.003 seconds, Kai overtakes Bottas to temporarily claim the absolute top spot!”

Taking a massive, gulping breath of air, Croft whipped his head around to look at his broadcast partner, Martin Brundle. The two men exchanged a look, but ultimately, they completely failed to contain themselves.

”WOW!”

The awe and astonishment couldn’t be stopped. It erupted completely—

Was any of this actually, physically possible?

During the first run of flying laps in Q3, Bottas and Hamilton had existed entirely in a tier of their own. Exactly like at Albert Park, their advantage over the rest of the field exceeded a massive 0.6 seconds. Projecting an aura of absolute, crushing tyranny, they demonstrated total dominance. Forget about attempting an overtake; their competitors couldn’t even manage to touch the exhaust fumes of the W10.

On a highly complex, comprehensive track like the Shanghai circuit, Mercedes-Benz’s inherent advantage was glaringly obvious—it bordered on dictatorial.

Sitting temporarily in third place, Leclerc had posted a 1:32.133. Meanwhile, the gap back to Verstappen and Kai was even more massive. The ’Big Three’ were essentially fighting a war across two entirely different dimensions—

No, it wasn’t a war. It was a completely one-sided, bloody massacre orchestrated entirely by Mercedes-Benz.

Forget about actually catching Mercedes-Benz; even breaking into the 1:31 bracket seemed like a completely delusional, impossible fantasy. The entire scenario vividly resurrected the traumatic memories of Melbourne, where Mercedes-Benz had established absolute dominance right from the season opener, violently intimidating the entire paddock.

After the brief, chaotic blip of the Bahrain Qualifying session, the natural order of the universe had seemingly been restored.

Was this... returning things to their ’proper’ state?

Mercedes-Benz was actively issuing a brutal warning to the rest of the paddock: Stop struggling. It’s useless. You are all nothing more than insignificant ants. The 2019 World Championships are already destined to belong to the Silver Arrows.

Yet, in direct, violent defiance of that narrative, Kai exploded out of nowhere, making his voice heard once again—

From a 1:32.234 straight down to a 1:31.560!

His single-lap pace improved by a staggering, logic-defying 0.674 seconds. Not only did he shatter the invisible barrier to become the very first non-Mercedes driver to break into the 1:31s, proudly chasing down the silver cars, but in a single, breathless surge, he blasted past both Hamilton and Bottas to temporarily seize the absolute summit.

Mind-blowing! Absolutely, unequivocally mind-blowing!

Language was fundamentally incapable of expressing even one ten-thousandth of the turbulent, boiling emotions surging through everyone’s chests right now.

Even though Croft was long accustomed to Kai’s terrifying resilience and his constant, aggressive refusal to adhere to conventional logic, his scalp still tingled violently. A string of profanities danced on the very tip of his tongue. He was dangerously close to losing control completely and vomiting all his internal organs right out onto the broadcast desk.

Brundle’s blood was completely on fire. From initially harboring zero expectations, only to be constantly surprised... to the current state where, even with his expectations raised to absolute, unprecedented heights, he was still continuously, violently blown away by Kai’s brilliance. He would never, ever miss the bygone eras of Schumacher or Senna again. Because right now, sitting right in front of them, they had Kai.

”Kai—”

”It just had to be Kai!”

The exclamation was part disbelief, but equally, a profound expression of absolute trust and deep reverence.

Brundle could finally, 100% confirm his theory: Kai had been meticulously laying a strategic trap all weekend long. Starting from Free Practice, and highly likely extending entirely through Qualifying itself, every single lap was merely a calculated stepping stone leading toward the ultimate objective of the Race.

Even though absolutely everyone in the paddock intellectually understood that Qualifying was merely a necessary precursor to the Race... the number of drivers throughout history who actually possessed the sheer audacity and nerve to treat an official Qualifying session as a glorified testing and simulation run? Since the golden days of Senna and Schumacher, Brundle had never, ever seen anyone attempt something this insane.

And the truly, terrifyingly critical point was this: Even though Kai was merely ”simulating” and running experimental lines... he still casually, effortlessly laid down a lap time like that.

Aside from ’mind-blowing,’ what other word could possibly describe it?

Thinking back on it now, the profound anxiety and worry they had felt during Q1 and Q2 seemed utterly foolish. They had been acting like absolute idiots—

Why on earth did they ever doubt him?

That was Kai!

Even though Mercedes-Benz currently possessed a terrifyingly massive, practically unreachable advantage over the rest of the grid... Kai still possessed the unique, singular ability to make Toto Wolff lose sleep at night. Wolff constantly had to remain on high alert, terrified that this unpredictable, ticking time bomb was going to violently flip the entire chessboard and completely obliterate Mercedes-Benz’s meticulously crafted grand strategy.

Exactly like right now.

Mercedes-Benz had arrogantly assumed this Qualifying session was going to be a simple, routine formality. A casual walk in the park. Yet now, Kai was suddenly sitting ahead of Bottas on the timing screens?

FUCK!

The live broadcast director understood the assignment perfectly. The camera feed instantly cut—

Focusing directly on the Mercedes-Benz pit wall.

Expressions were incredibly severe, faces stony and grim. Every single person looked as though they were being slowly roasted over an open fire. The air was practically frozen solid. An invisible, crushing pressure had tightly, suffocatingly enveloped the entire pit garage. It stood in stark, jarring contrast to the joyous, wildly cheering celebrations erupting next door in the Ferrari garage.

Croft, a massive grin plastered across his face, happily threw more gasoline onto the inferno. ”And now, Kai has violently shoved the pressure right back onto Mercedes-Benz!”

Thrilling! This entire sequence of events was just too incredibly thrilling!

AHHH-HOHOHO—

Total, unmitigated explosion. Blood boiling hot.

The Shanghai circuit instantly transformed into a raging sea of fire. People were deliriously happy, jumping wildly, screaming at the top of their lungs, burning with unbridled passion. Let the storm rage even fiercer!

Buzz-buzz— Buzz-buzz—

The violent, clawing heatwaves continuously hammered against their eardrums, wave after relentless wave. Dense, impenetrable, layer upon layer. That intense vibration violently smashed into their souls. The absolute extreme of deafening noise eventually breached a critical threshold, plunging them into a bizarre, vacuum-sealed bubble of absolute silence. The world continued to spin at terrifying velocity, yet it felt entirely, unnervingly quiet.

Even the fanatical, contorted faces filling their vision began to blur into a smeared halo of light. They simply felt that everything their eyes could see was currently on fire. Yet, absolutely no one was in a rush to flee the inferno. Screaming themselves hoarse, completely losing themselves in the madness, they threw their entire beings toward the track, their eyes locked unblinkingly onto the streaks of light screaming past.

The competition was brutal, a literal bayonet fight. The thick smell of blood saturated the air. Qualifying was still not over. The remaining competitors were currently rocketing toward the finish line.

Verstappen— 1:32.089!

Involuntary gasps of cold air. Despite pushing with absolutely everything he had, Red Bull still entirely failed to shatter the 1:31 barrier. What exactly did this prove?

Thoughts violently fragmented, but before they could even fully form, all attention violently snapped back to the track, locking onto the other flash of Ferrari red rocketing down the main straight.

Number 16. Leclerc.

Clearly, Leclerc wasn’t terrified of Kai. He absolutely didn’t view himself as merely a ”challenger” to Kai’s throne. They were peers, standing on perfectly equal footing on the exact same starting line. He firmly, unshakeably believed he possessed the raw talent and capability required to defeat Kai. And he was currently, desperately hunting for his very first internal team victory of the season.

Throughout the entire Shanghai Grand Prix weekend, while Kai had been struggling, experimenting, and wildly fluctuating, Leclerc had displayed significantly faster adaptation, securing a slightly more advantageous baseline. Even though this was Kai’s home turf, Leclerc was pushing with absolutely everything he possessed. Not only was this the first time since joining Ferrari that he had held the upper hand internally during Practice, but he was desperately determined to convert that advantage into a tangible, concrete result in Qualifying.

This young genius was charging forward with terrifying momentum!

The SF90’s unparalleled, thunderous engine roar sounded exactly like a localized earthquake rumbling up from the very core of the planet. Thump, thump, thump. It hammered violently against their hearts. Their entire bodies tensed to the absolute, breaking limit.

Li Lingyu’s entire body went completely rigid. On one hand, she desperately wanted Leclerc to display top-tier competitiveness. For Ferrari to truly combat Mercedes-Benz, relying solely on Kai was simply not enough; he absolutely needed his teammate’s support. But on the other hand, she desperately wanted Kai to maintain his absolute dominance and aggressively defend his territory.

These deeply contradictory, highly complex emotions tangled violently together. Anxious yet fiercely expectant, she watched the red blur of the Ferrari rocket down the asphalt—

Across the line!

The timer stopped. The numbers refreshed.

Leclerc. 1:31.865.

WOW!

Shock and awe intertwined, erupting violently outward. Before her brain could even process the implication, a primal, instinctual surge of joy and fanaticism mutated into a raw, guttural scream that tore itself from her throat.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH—

Leclerc broke through!

Ferrari’s young star successfully shattered the 1:32 barrier, taking a massive step forward to become the fourth driver this entire Shanghai Grand Prix weekend to deliver such a blistering answer sheet. This meant that the Ferrari duo had successfully withstood Verstappen’s powerful, aggressive assault, once again violently dropping Red Bull and significantly narrowing the gap to Mercedes-Benz.

Simultaneously, Leclerc was still trailing Kai. By 0.305 seconds!

The brilliant young genius who had just joined Ferrari this season still hadn’t managed to overthrow his teammate. Whether in Qualifying or the Race, his burning desire to defeat Kai would have to continue waiting. Kai—who had spent the entire Grand Prix weekend fumbling in the dark, constantly fluctuating, and seemingly struggling—had once again, decisively, violently demonstrated his absolute, undeniable supremacy.

Li Lingyu violently sucked in a breath of air and held it. Her brain went entirely blank. Acting purely on subconscious instinct, she threw both hands high into the air. She even forgot to scream, just staring blankly at the track. Adrenaline and dopamine crashed through her system, wave after relentless wave. Yet, the very next second, her eyes locked unblinkingly onto the two silver blurs rocketing down the main straight.

One after the other. It was unmistakably the defending Constructors’ Champions, Mercedes-Benz.

Kai, Bottas, Hamilton, Leclerc. This was the current, provisional ranking. But it wasn’t the final, official Qualifying order.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Mercedes-Benz remained the absolute, undisputed masters of the Shanghai circuit. Even though Leclerc had just laid down an unbelievable lap, achieving a massive personal breakthrough, the glaring, massive performance gap separating him from the two Mercedes cars could not be ignored.

Right now, Kai’s violent, unexpected intrusion had violently shoved Mercedes-Benz into a desperate corner. The arrogant, high-and-mighty Silver Arrows had been brutally dragged back down to earth. The crushing, immense pressure of determining whether Mercedes-Benz could successfully maintain their total dominance over Qualifying now rested entirely upon the shoulders of their two drivers.

Once—Twice—And now, for the third time, Ferrari had violently shattered Mercedes-Benz’s master plan. The arrogant, untouchable Mercedes-Benz was visibly stumbling under the aggressive, suffocating pressure.

It wasn’t just the fans. The eyes of every single engineer and mechanic in the Red Bull, Renault, and Racing Point garages were entirely glued to the screens. The 2019 season was rapidly becoming incredibly, fascinatingly complex.

”...The pressure now rests entirely, 100%, upon Lewis Hamilton. Kai managed to secure Pole Position at the previous race. Can Mercedes-Benz successfully lock out the front row here? Can Hamilton withstand this crushing, suffocating pressure, execute a massive breakthrough, and secure his seventh career Pole Position in Shanghai, aggressively defending his glorious title as the ’King of Shanghai’?”

The air froze solid. The silver blur violently pierced the entire length of the main straight, aggressively scattering the lingering red heatwaves. The dreamlike, chaotic world seemed to suddenly sharpen and brighten. Silver aggressively overtook the red, illuminating the entire circuit.

Breathing ceased entirely.

”He. Can.”

A massive, concussive thunderclap violently detonated.

”Ladies and gentlemen, Lewis Hamilton! Withstanding unbelievable pressure, he successfully defends the absolute honor of a four-time Drivers’ World Champion! He proves once again, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he remains the absolute, most dominant entity to ever grace the Shanghai circuit!”

”1:31.557! With an unimaginably microscopic advantage of just three-thousandths of a second, Hamilton overtakes Kai to temporarily claim Pole Position! But before he can secure his second Pole of the season, there is still one final, ultimate challenge remaining.”

”Valtteri Bottas! The Number 77 Mercedes-Benz!”

”Can he defeat Hamilton and snatch his very first Pole Position of the season?”

All eyes converged—

You could vividly, physically feel the rough, abrasive texture of the airflow scraping against your skin. It was exactly like magic—visual, auditory, and tactile sensations suddenly physicalized. You could genuinely touch and feel it. A slightly painful, deeply electrifying tingle caused their bodies to tremble uncontrollably.

Climax after climax crashed down, one after another, leaving absolutely zero room to breathe. Even Croft’s rapid-fire commentary was struggling to keep pace.

That streak of silver ripped through the air, piercing directly into their retinas like a razor-sharp blade. Yet, before their eyes could even track its movement, it felt as though it had pierced straight through their skulls, exploding out the back of their heads.

Vision completely lost track of the target. The magic spell was broken.

Bottas. 1:31.541.

”POLE POSITION!”

”Ladies and gentlemen, Valtteri Bottas has secured Pole Position for the Shanghai Grand Prix! The Mercedes-Benz driver is displaying an absolutely unbelievable level of competitive form this season. Following his stunning victory over Hamilton in Melbourne to claim the race win, he has now defeated the ’King of Shanghai’ on his own home turf to secure his very first Pole Position of the season!”

”WOW—”

It wasn’t just awe. It was a scalp-tingling, mind-bending astonishment. Absolutely no one was immune to the shock.

The 2019 Shanghai Grand Prix Qualifying session was officially concluded.

Bottas on Pole. Hamilton in second. Mercedes-Benz flawlessly locked out the front row.

Ferrari secured the second row. Red Bull claimed the third row. Renault took the fourth row. And Haas—who had fought a brutal, bloody war just to scrape their way into Q3—seemed to have encountered a catastrophic mechanical issue. They spent the entirety of Q3 parked in the garage, completely failing to set a lap time, ultimately settling for the fifth row.

Initially, people had been genuinely amazed that the Shanghai Grand Prix was finally acting as a definitive watershed moment, clearly exposing the true hierarchy within the midfield, with Renault and Haas having successfully seized the initiative. Yet, no one could have anticipated that the absolute, final spotlight would still be violently stolen by the ’Big Three.’

More accurately, by Ferrari.

Leclerc had successfully, cleanly broken into the 1:31s. And Kai had genuinely, terrifyingly forced Mercedes-Benz to break out in a cold sweat. In those final, dying moments, both Hamilton and Bottas had to burn their cosmos and fight with absolute, bloodshot desperation, ultimately scraping out a victory by microscopic margins measured in thousandths of a second. Absolutely no one had predicted the suffocating suspense would last until the very last microsecond of the session.

Driving the absolute, sole, undisputed ’rocket ship’ on the grid, yet still being forced to endure such agonizing, life-or-death struggles... On paper, Mercedes-Benz held the advantage. But why did they look so utterly, pathetically exhausted and battered?

...

”Fuck!”

The live broadcast camera instantly caught Toto Wolff violently cursing in German.

In a stark, jarring departure from his usual demeanor, Wolff wasn’t celebrating Mercedes-Benz’s flawless front-row lockout. Given their massive, overwhelming performance advantage and their previously unassailable lead, the fact that Qualifying had been this terrifyingly close—forcing them to break out in a genuine cold sweat—was completely unacceptable.

It was both humiliating and profoundly frustrating.

This was absolutely, definitively not the narrative Wolff had meticulously designed for this season. Starting from Melbourne, Kai’s relentless, continuous provocations, his aggressive assaults, and his terrifying resilience had repeatedly, violently shattered Wolff’s strategic layouts. The psychological deterrence Mercedes-Benz was desperately trying to establish had long since been reduced to shattered, fragmented glass by Kai’s relentless hammer blows. It was slipping through their fingers like dry sand.

The harder they squeezed, the faster it slipped away.

Mercedes-Benz had flawlessly locked out the front row. They held the absolute tactical initiative for the Race tomorrow. Yet, they were currently suffocating under a heavy, oppressive sense of being driven into a desperate, dead-end corner. Was this logical?

No. Obviously not—

”CAPTAIN! CAPTAIN! CAPTAIN!”

From the direction of the main grandstand, the home fans at the Shanghai circuit were screaming themselves hoarse, cheering with absolute, uninhibited joy. Even though Kai had agonizingly missed out on provisional pole, falling to Hamilton by a microscopic fraction of a second... the home fans felt absolutely zero regret and zero sorrow. They had seen it all. They had witnessed exactly how Kai brutally extracted the absolute limit from the car. They watched him author a genuine miracle, step by agonizing step, successfully terrifying the mighty Mercedes-Benz into a cold sweat.

Regarding the Race tomorrow, they were brimming with towering expectations. They were fully prepared for war. That boiling passion, continuously burning and endlessly releasing, was powerful enough to illuminate the entire world.

Those deafening cheers sounded exactly like they were actively, aggressively mocking Mercedes-Benz’s pathetic, exhausted desperation.

A heavy knot of suffocating frustration lodged firmly in Wolff’s chest. For a moment, he couldn’t even regulate his breathing.

Suffocating!

After violently expelling that single expletive, Wolff finally managed to claw back his icy, calculating rationality.

It didn’t matter how brilliant Kai was. So what? The brutal, objective reality of the performance gap remained an impenetrable, unbreakable fortress wall. Mercedes-Benz was going to give these casual, noise-loving, amateur spectators a brutal, firsthand lesson in the absolute, tyrannical authority of raw machine performance in the turbo-hybrid era. It was a massive, unbridgeable chasm staring them right in the face. Relying solely on individual brilliance to break through was a mathematical impossibility. The romanticized, golden eras where superheroes like Senna and Schumacher could single-handedly dominate the paddock were dead and buried. And they were absolutely never coming back.

Mercedes-Benz would win.

Not only would they win, but they would secure a flawless 1-2 finish. They would execute a massive, dominant, crushing victory, permanently strangling Kai’s aggressive counter-attacks and completely, violently exposing Ferrari’s true, pathetic weakness. They would aggressively, ruthlessly defend the arrogant pride of Mercedes-Benz!

And it wasn’t just Wolff. Hamilton’s expression was completely devoid of any joy or satisfaction.

The meticulously crafted master plan for the new season was being violently shattered time and time again. Repeatedly, relentlessly. Kai’s aggressive, overbearing presence constantly felt like a jagged dagger pressed firmly, inescapably against his spine.

Omnipresent. Relentless.

Even though the W10 possessed a terrifying, unparalleled performance advantage... when facing that lawless, rule-breaking young man, it constantly felt as though it was never quite enough—

First Melbourne. Then Bahrain. And now, Shanghai.

It had genuinely, truly been a very, very long time since Hamilton had felt this battered and exhausted.

Anyone who truly understood Hamilton knew that his competitive drive was unimaginably fierce. It defied human comprehension. And it wasn’t just empty talk. He possessed the unique, terrifying ability to perfectly convert burning frustration and explosive anger into raw, kinetic energy, ultimately utilizing it to brutally crush every single opponent on the asphalt.

In 2007, he lost the Drivers’ World Championship by a single, agonizing point. In 2008, he reached the summit.

In 2016, Rosberg violently yanked the World Championship right out of his mouth. In 2017, he reached the summit.

Furthermore, it wasn’t simply about reclaiming the championship throne. The terrifying, ruthless, bloodthirsty ferocity Hamilton displayed in 2008 and 2017 had left a deep, permanent, traumatic scar on the entire paddock. It had become a legendary myth. Absolutely no one wanted to face a fully ignited, fury-fueled Hamilton in a head-to-head battle. It was the ultimate nightmare scenario for every single driver on the grid.

In 2018, Hamilton’s momentum toward establishing consecutive, unchallenged dynasties in the paddock was violently derailed once again. It was the second time in three years. The motivation driving him to reclaim the championship throne wasn’t just doubled. To be precise, it was amplified five-fold—perhaps even ten-fold. It was a raging, uncontrollable inferno. He had spent the entire off-season with his jaw clenched, aggressively sharpening his blades.

Since the opening of the brand new season, on the surface, Hamilton had completely sheathed his sharp edges. He maintained a perfectly cordial, peaceful coexistence with Kai and Ferrari. All the toxic drama and bitter resentment of last season were supposedly left entirely in 2018. A new beginning, a new attitude. Naturally, he was supposedly embarking on a brand new, clean journey. But deep down, everyone knew that was an absolute lie.

The razor-sharp, lethal edge hidden deep within his blood, branded permanently into his very bones... it was fully unleashed. It was operating at maximum firepower, potentially even exceeding the terrifying levels he had reached in 2017.

Yet, what was the actual reality?

The arrogant, aggressive youth, Kai, repeatedly and violently resurrected those agonizing nightmares. The deep, traumatic scars inflicted at Interlagos and Yas Marina last season had penetrated straight to the bone. It felt as though they were still throbbing with phantom pain right now. Endlessly, irritatingly, Kai constantly shattered Hamilton’s meticulous plans, continuously, sadistically pouring salt directly into those open wounds.

A raging inferno was burning wildly, uncontrollably within Hamilton’s chest.

Making matters even worse, Bottas wasn’t exactly behaving like a good, obedient soldier either.

...FUCK!

Hamilton had absolutely, never in his wildest dreams, anticipated that he would actually lose to Bottas on the Shanghai circuit—a track where he historically possessed absolute, practically guaranteed dominance. He had even come dangerously close to losing to Kai.

To him, this was a profound, burning humiliation.

The heavy, suffocating anger that had been tightly compressed in his chest finally could no longer be contained. During the mixed zone interviews, it inadvertently leaked out. For the first time in a very long while, Hamilton bared his fangs.

”Today’s Qualifying session was... highly interesting.”

He let out a short, cold chuckle. The corners of his mouth twitched upward briefly, sketching a razor-thin smile dripping with pure sarcasm. But it vanished in a flash. That faint, mocking curve disappeared entirely, leaving no trace behind.

”However, Qualifying is merely Qualifying. The Race is where we truly, genuinely excel. We are fully prepared to face any difficulties and overcome any challenges.”

Rustle, rustle. A sudden, chaotic commotion rippled through the media pen.

The reporters packed into the mixed zone simultaneously shifted their gaze. Their eyes instantly locked onto the figure appearing at the entrance. His short, black hair was damp and plastered to his forehead, completely soaked in sweat. But his slightly flushed cheeks were adorned with a massive, brilliant smile. An aura of uninhibited, aggressively vibrant youth blasted outward, effortlessly and instantly capturing the absolute focus of the entire room.

”Kai! Kai!”

A chorus of eager shouts erupted, rising and falling in chaotic waves.

And then, ”CAPTAIN!”

One listen was all it took to identify the heavy Italian accent. That grating, highly specific title seemed to actively violently pluck at Hamilton’s frayed nerves. The entire atmosphere within the mixed zone shifted drastically, becoming incredibly tense.

He absolutely despised the nickname ”Captain.”

Hamilton’s expression remained perfectly stony. He didn’t twitch a single muscle. He simply continued answering the reporters’ questions with slow, deliberate, highly calculated composure.

”Formula 1 is not a video game. And it is certainly not a circus performance. Endlessly taking massive, suicidal risks. Endlessly resorting to cheap, flashy acrobatics. Endlessly attempting to pander to the lowest common denominator in the grandstands... This is a sport that demands elite precision and absolute, surgical control. While strapped inside the cockpit, we are forced to make dozens of critical, life-or-death calculations every single second.”

”Yet, certain drivers constantly attempt to prioritize cheap sensationalism over substance. They completely lose sight of the fundamental, core essence of motorsport. They are actively, deliberately degrading the integrity of the competition, reducing it to nothing more than a pathetic, clownish sideshow.”

”Behavior like that is a massive, humiliating stain on the entire sport. Moving into the Race tomorrow, I sincerely, genuinely hope we do not witness any further instances of such wildly undisciplined, chaotic behavior. We have a fundamental responsibility to this sport. We have a duty to project a positive, professional image of what a driver should be. Otherwise, the younger generation of children absolutely should not look to us as role models.”

The air was sticky, suffocatingly hot, and practically frozen solid.

The entire mixed zone ground to a violent halt. Not just the journalists, but other drivers and paddock personnel wandering nearby also turned their heads to stare. The sound of violently hammering hearts magnified against eardrums, growing louder and louder... until it was violently shattered by a sudden, booming burst of hearty laughter. Every single pair of eyes in the room instantly snapped toward the source.

It was unmistakably—Kai.

Haha.

Kai threw his head back and laughed loudly. He looked exactly as though he had just heard the absolute funniest, most hilarious joke of the entire year.

Hahaha!

It was a bright, joyous, completely unrestrained laugh. But in this specific, highly volatile moment, it sounded incredibly, terrifyingly piercing.

So, was Kai deliberately targeting Hamilton? Was this Kai’s direct, aggressive response to Hamilton’s thinly veiled insults?

People exchanged frantic, wide-eyed glances. The problem was, Hamilton hadn’t explicitly named any names. And Kai’s laughter couldn’t technically be classified as a direct, verbal response.

However, anyone in the room with functioning eyes could clearly see the truth. Kai’s roaring laughter felt exactly like a brutal, stinging slap delivered violently directly across Hamilton’s face.

Hamilton, who usually prided himself on his icy, unshakeable composure, experienced a rare, highly visible break in character. His face darkened completely. Even his trademark, polite PR smile vanished without a trace. His eyes were devoid of anything but pure, freezing ice.

Yet, Kai clearly wasn’t preparing to stop there. Smiling brilliantly, he turned to address the throng of reporters. ”I used to hear this saying a lot: ’When we grow up, we eventually become the exact thing we used to hate the most.’”

”I never really understood what that phrase actually meant. But today, I think I’m finally starting to get a clue.”

”And honestly, it’s a fantastic reminder. It reminds me to make absolutely certain that I never, ever allow myself to mutate into a decaying, closed-minded, rigidly stubborn, arrogantly ignorant old relic.”

The world went absolutely, totally dead silent—

Not only was there zero sound, but there was zero movement. The mixed zone instantly transformed into a sealed vacuum chamber. The moment anyone stepped inside, they were instantly frozen in place.

However, hiding just beneath the surface of that rigid, terrifying paralysis, a violently surging, boiling, manic energy was bubbling up exactly like superheated magma. It threatened to detonate, explode, and trigger a massive, catastrophic eruption at any given microsecond.

Gazes lingered briefly on Hamilton. A chaotic mix of shock, awe, and thinly veiled schadenfreude swarmed his position. But immediately following that, as if guided by an invisible, magnetic force, every single pair of eyes in the room snapped away from him and converged entirely upon Kai. It was so synchronized it created an immediate, physical vacuum around Hamilton. The surging, boiling heat in the air seemed to be instantaneously sucked out of his immediate vicinity.

Frozen like insects trapped in amber. Paralyzed in place, put on display for the entire world to gawk at.

”When we discuss the concept of ’role models,’ what exactly are we talking about? Are we merely discussing an individual’s personal accumulation of trophies and statistics? Or are we discussing the inspiration and motivation they provide to others? A true role model’s existence makes people willing to believe in miracles. It makes them willing to believe in their dreams. It helps them discover a tiny, piercing ray of dawn amidst the endless, suffocating darkness and agonizing pain of brutal reality.”

”In the world of competitive sports, the entire reason records exist is so they can be shattered. And the entire reason the established ’order’ exists is so it can be challenged.”

”The race cars we drive today are fundamentally, entirely different from the cars driven five years ago. The drivers competing today are fundamentally different from the drivers competing ten years ago.”

”If we constantly dedicate all our energy to aggressively defending the established ’order’ and blindly upholding stale ’traditions,’ then this sport will never, ever progress. We will never witness fresh vitality. We will never see new blood injected into the system.”

”And even worse, we might never see kids from impoverished backgrounds, or kids from Asia like me, ever given the opportunity to step foot inside this paddock.”

”We all desperately want this sport to become more exciting, more spectacular. Therefore, we absolutely must throw the doors wide open to embrace infinite possibilities. We must relentlessly challenge the status quo. We must violently break out of the rigid, suffocating confines of conventional thinking.”

The spear tip was pointed squarely, unmistakably at Hamilton—

”Life is deeply, inherently ironic, isn’t it?”

”Ten years ago, a young driver violently crashed into the paddock. He shattered the established order. He completely upended the entire hierarchy. He forced us to see entirely new, unprecedented possibilities. He proved that skin color, economic status, and family background absolutely should not be used as chains to shackle someone’s dreams. He single-handedly ignited the burning ambitions of countless children across the globe. But now? Now he is actively mutating into the ultimate defender of the old guard. He’s actively attempting to snuff out the dreams of the next generation. He’s standing here, preaching to us that we need to obey the rules, respect the established hierarchy, and act like good, obedient little boys.”

”Wow. Reality.”

”No wonder people always say that harsh reality is the ultimate executioner, mercilessly slaughtering all romantic fantasies. Does this officially qualify as the terrifying, real-world nightmare of Anakin Skywalker fully transforming into Darth Vader?”

Razor-sharp. Piercing. Absolutely merciless. A single, lethal strike directly to the jugular.

Kai’s verbal slap was so incredibly vicious, so brutally savage, that the entire room collectively gasped in horror. They instantly lost their voices, completely stripped of their ability to process what was happening.

He didn’t use a single dirty word. Not a single profanity. Yet, he had violently dragged the arrogant, untouchable, high-and-mighty ’Gentleman’ straight down from the clouds. He smashed him face-first into the mud, leaving him battered, bruised, and covered in filth. His casually delivered, perfectly paced, highly articulate speech was the absolute equivalent of landing a barrage of heavy, bare-knuckle punches directly to the face. Every single word drew blood. It was significantly more lethal and infinitely more destructive than anything Rosberg had ever dared to say during his era of brutal honesty.

However, the man responsible for the carnage, Kai, remained looking entirely, blissfully unbothered. He looked as though he genuinely hadn’t the faintest idea just how massive a tidal wave his blatant, pointed insults had triggered.

The corners of his mouth lifted slightly. Lowering his voice, he perfectly mimicked the most iconic, legendary line from Star Wars. ”I am your father!”

The reporters in the room were visibly stunned.

Kai tilted his head, his expression dead serious. ”I’m sorry, but I am not Luke Skywalker.” The underlying implication of that statement couldn’t have been clearer: I am absolutely not Hamilton’s heir, nor am I his successor.

Haha— The laughter instantly erupted. The entire room completely lost its mind. They laughed hysterically, entirely unable to stop. Hahaha!

They laughed until they couldn’t breathe. They laughed until they were practically rolling on the floor.

Perhaps, there was only exactly one exception—

Turning around, Kai instantly locked eyes with that single exception. Mr. Lewis Hamilton. Expressionless. His face as dark as thunderclouds. He stared flatly, coldly, directly into Kai’s eyes.

Even though there was a significant physical distance between them, that dead, emotionless stare—entirely devoid of warmth or feeling—still radiated a terrifying, razor-sharp edge, stabbing viciously toward Kai.

However, Kai didn’t retreat an inch.

Staring straight back, Kai even flashed a massive, radiant smile. He raised his voice and offered a cheerful greeting. ”Hey, Lewis.”

His tone and expression were exactly like someone accidentally bumping into their next-door neighbor in the produce aisle of a supermarket. And then—that was it. He didn’t say another word. He simply turned his back and walked away.

Approaching him from the opposite direction, Kai saw Leclerc. The corners of Leclerc’s mouth were violently twitching. It was glaringly obvious he was using every ounce of willpower he possessed to suppress a massive fit of laughter. Kai raised his right hand and walked straight toward him.

Smack!

Kai and Leclerc exchanged a crisp, resounding high-five, looking exactly like baseball players celebrating a massive, game-winning home run. That sharp, echoing clap sounded suspiciously like yet another brutal slap across the face.

From beginning to end! From the very first word to the very last! Kai had maintained absolute, tyrannical control over the entire confrontation!

You could clearly, audibly hear sharp intakes of breath echoing throughout the mixed zone. In a flash, every single boiling, frenzied gaze in the room violently snapped back onto Hamilton.

Exactly like a massive, blinding spotlight.

Hamilton stood entirely alone, isolated in the center of the crowd, enduring the blistering scrutiny. The scorching air instantly became thick, sticky, and completely stagnant. The suffocating smell of gunpowder could no longer be contained.

No words were necessary. The entire paddock could viscerally feel the terrifying, rapidly escalating tension.

And they didn’t have to wait long. Hamilton utilized his own highly specific, highly aggressive methods to ensure Kai felt the full, devastating weight of his fury—

Even though Hamilton was not the type of driver to throw actual punches or engage in screaming, red-faced shouting matches, that absolutely did not mean he lacked a temper.

In fact, Hamilton possessed a massive temper. It was terrifyingly fierce. He was absolutely, definitively not the type of man who would ever meekly bow his head.

Sunday. The Race. The Formation Lap.

Exiting Turn 5, accelerating down the short straight, preparing to initiate the entry phase for Turn 6. Without a single microsecond of warning, completely out of nowhere, the Number 44 car directly in front of Kai violently slammed on the brakes.

It was an absolute, terrifying ambush. In a zone where braking was entirely unnecessary, and completely unpredictable, Hamilton violently spiked the brakes.

Abrupt! Sudden!

Kai was startled. Fortunately, his concentration was dialed to absolute maximum. His elite, split-second reflexes kicked in instantly. He violently slammed on his own brakes. The front tires locked up in a puff of smoke. He was mere millimeters away from completely rear-ending the Number 44 car. The actual, official race hadn’t even officially started yet, and they were already on the verge of causing a massive, humiliating catastrophe on the formation lap. But instantly, Hamilton released the brakes. He rolled forward a few meters, re-establishing the gap, and then executed a second, completely normal braking maneuver at the standard braking point to enter the Turn 6 hairpin.

The distance between the two cars immediately widened again.

Kai froze. ”Wait a second. Did he just brake-test me?!”

The term ”Brake-Testing”—in simple terms—refers to a highly dangerous, aggressive maneuver where the lead car violently, abruptly slams on the brakes in an entirely unnecessary, highly unpredictable zone, explicitly to force the trailing car into a panicked, emergency reaction.

For example, during a Formation Lap.

For example, while running under Safety Car conditions.

For example, within the pit lane speed limit zones.

In these specific scenarios, two rules apply: first, overtaking is strictly prohibited; second, drivers are explicitly mandated to maintain a safe, respectful distance. Maintaining basic, professional courtesy is the foundational bedrock of fair competition.

However, executing an unnecessary, violent brake spike in these scenarios does two things. First, it forces the trailing car to execute an emergency, panic-induced braking maneuver, causing them to lock up their tires and severely disrupting their carefully managed tire temperatures. Second, it violently shatters the trailing car’s driving rhythm.

Most critically, it is a naked, undisguised act of sheer, aggressive provocation. It dances dangerously right on the ragged edge of legality. It’s incredibly difficult for the stewards to definitively prove or penalize, yet it explicitly, undeniably broadcasts pure hostility. It violently shatters the polite, professional boundaries of fair competition. It is utilized specifically as a psychological weapon to infuriate opponents and completely scramble their mental state.

Through that specific maneuver, and through that aggressive silhouette, Hamilton was essentially screaming: Shut the fuck up. Stop flapping your lips. That single, lucky lap in Qualifying means absolutely nothing.

Caught completely off guard, Kai’s carefully managed rhythm was instantly plunged into chaos—

The seeds of war had already been planted before the lights had even gone out.

Borreipaire was utterly dumbstruck. He absolutely, never in his wildest dreams, expected Hamilton to resort to something as overtly aggressive and dirty as brake-testing Kai.

For a moment, even Borreipaire was rendered completely speechless. His brain went entirely blank. ”Fuck.”

It wasn’t until the profanity had already slipped out that Borreipaire realized his mistake. He was just about to frantically apologize, but before he could, Kai’s bright, joyous laughter crackled through the radio. ”Pierre, well, that’s a rare treat. So, I just experienced the very first, genuine brake-test of my incredibly brief racing career, right? What a remarkably refreshing, novel experience.”

Borreipaire couldn’t help himself. He burst into laughter. ”So, how was it?”

”Beautiful,” Kai replied. ”It seems Lewis Hamilton isn’t an impenetrable, emotionless robot made of iron and steel after all. He was genuinely enraged. And even if he wasn’t actually enraged, the fact that he felt compelled to pretend he was enraged proves he’s actively initiating psychological warfare. Oh, my. Has our esteemed Mr. Toto Wolff completely lost faith in the almighty W10?”

”It seems our Qualifying performance truly, genuinely managed to rattle their cage and scramble their master plan. Since that’s the case, we have absolutely no excuse not to double down, push even harder, and escalate things to the absolute maximum during the Race today.”

”Today is a beautiful day for a motor race.”
