F1: The Speed Legend

Brundle focused entirely on Kai. He knew the immense, crushing weight of the Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari clash rested entirely on the young driver’s shoulders. Mercedes had just shattered the equilibrium with a mountain-devouring double pit stop. Now, the entire paddock waited with bated breath to see exactly how Kai would respond. Even as the broadcast cameras scrambled to cover the frantic activity in the silver pit box, Brundle kept a close eye on the Number 22 car across his timing screens.

Would he box? The thought had barely surfaced before Brundle dismissed it. This entire dogfight between Mercedes and Kai was fundamentally a battle for the ultimate initiative. For the past eight laps, Mercedes had elevated their pace, and Kai had remained entirely unbothered, flatly refusing to be dragged into their rhythm. Now that Mercedes had dived into the pits, Kai had finally inherited a track full of clean air. There was absolutely no reason for him to squander it.

The answer was blindingly obvious.

Push mode.

Right on cue, Kai began to push. Brundle secretly clenched his fists, silently cheering for the young driver. It had been an incredibly long time since he had witnessed a race executed with such meticulous, step-by-step strategic brilliance. Kai was maximizing his machinery, pushing the SF90 to 120% of its theoretical limit, shattering constraints, and challenging the absolute impossible.

If everyone simply played by the rules and ran conservative, simulated strategies, not a single team on the current grid could defeat Mercedes-Benz. They would all just meekly wait for the first major aero update of the season to see if the gap closed. But Kai refused to surrender. He kept challenging the established order, continuously launching assaults, completely denying Mercedes a moment of peace. That was the unmistakable aura of a true champion.

Brundle harbored absolutely no ill will toward Hamilton. He simply desperately wanted to see exactly how high Kai’s challenge could climb, and what ultimate limits he could breach.

Clearly, Kai wasn’t losing his mind with ecstasy or rushing the process. After expending so much blood, sweat, and mental energy to finally manufacture this golden opportunity, he remained terrifyingly icy. The exact instant he hit clean air, he slowly bared his fangs.

One lap. Two laps. Three laps.

His single-lap pace escalated with a methodical, unhurried, yet terrifying rhythm. He broke into the 1:36s without immediately snatching the fastest lap from Mercedes.

Four laps.

Kai was now hovering incredibly close to Bottas’s fastest lap time. The gap was less than a hundredth of a second. They were operating on the exact same phenomenal plateau.

The Mercedes pit wall immediately felt the crushing weight of the pressure. None of this was unexpected. When they boxed, Kai staying out to attempt the overcut was the most obvious counter-move. However, during the preceding eight laps, Mercedes had supposedly built a sufficient buffer. Kai successfully executing an overcut bordered on a mathematical impossibility. Forget about overcutting Hamilton; jumping Bottas looked like an agonizingly difficult task.

Pressure was just pressure. Mercedes refused to act rashly. This was already the third variable phase of the race. They possessed absolutely zero capital left to take wild gambles.

Not needing to gamble was one thing, but it didn’t stop Hamilton and Bottas from fully exploiting the superior grip of their fresh Yellow Mediums to keep the psychological screws turning on Kai. If Kai rushed his pace even slightly, the freezing track temperatures would ruthlessly expose the dying core of his Hard tires. The rubber would collapse without warning, costing him the entire race.

Then came Lap 42. Five laps in clean air. Kai finally dropped the hammer, painting the timing screens purple and dragging the Shanghai Grand Prix lap record dangerously close to the 1:36.000 limit.

”1:36.007! A new fastest lap!”

Hearts violently leaped into throats. The grandstands erupted into manic, ecstatic cheers. The Mercedes pit wall was no exception to the tension. Their faces remained stoic masks, but internally, they were writhing with anxiety. Part of them was terrified Kai would maintain this flying pace and genuinely complete the overcut. Another part secretly prayed Kai would lose his rational mind, push entirely past the limit, and trigger a catastrophic cliff-drop in his tire performance.

Hearts hammered against ribs, echoing like rolling thunder.

VROOM. VROOM-VROOM.

Brundle couldn’t help but sweat. If this were any other circuit, he wouldn’t be worried. But this was Kai’s home race. Especially after losing the championship by agonizing millimeters here last year, Brundle feared the hot-blooded youth might let a momentary surge of adrenaline cloud his judgment, letting the race slip right through his fingers. Formula 1 was a cruel sport where microscopic details dictated absolute victory or defeat.

But Brundle quickly realized he was slapping his own face with needless anxiety. This was Kai. The exact same Kai who had displayed the ruthless, cold-blooded instincts of an apex predator at Interlagos and Yas Marina last season.

Lap 43: 1:35.991.

Lap 44: 1:36.010.

Lap 45: 1:36.061.

No, Kai hadn’t lost his mind. He wasn’t blindly, recklessly going full throttle. He had locked himself onto an optimal performance peak and stubbornly stabilized there. He entered a state of continuous, high-frequency output, relying on the sheer, oppressive strength of his single-lap consistency to methodically stretch the gap.

Even though the purple sectors cooled off after Lap 43, the physical distance between Kai and Hamilton was expanding at a visibly terrifying rate. The entire world was witnessing a pit window being pried open with bare hands.

The euphoria and sheer hype instantly mutated into agonizing tension. The fans actually forgot to scream. They simply stood rooted to the spot, every muscle rigidly tense, their eyes locked obsessively onto that fleeting red blur.

Objectively speaking, the SF90 was a temperamental nightmare. If the track was too cold, it struggled. If it was too hot, it melted. The inherent aerodynamic flaws meant their optimal operating window was microscopic. But on a highly demanding, comprehensive circuit like Shanghai, the freezing track temperatures were actually a blessing in disguise. It wasn’t a perfect scenario, but compared to blistering heat, the cold offered a slight, desperate advantage.

Kai could utilize his phenomenal car control to maintain this high-frequency output for a few extra laps, carving out precious strategic breathing room. But it was still a wild, dangerous dance on the edge of a razor blade. Everyone remembered the first stint. Kai had pitted later than his rivals, explicitly to buy himself this exact flexibility for the second phase.

Now, it was finally time to cash in those chips.

The Ferrari garage was practically choking on the scent of gunpowder. Clear had his eyes glued to the telemetry, his muscles coiled tight. He knew perfectly well that Kai couldn’t sustain this brutal extraction for much longer.

Yet, the full pit window still hadn’t miraculously materialized.

The baseline difficulty of executing an overcut was already astronomical. Mercedes’ desperate, all-in gamble during the second phase had elevated that difficulty to the realm of pure fantasy.

But Formula 1 was fundamentally a team sport. If the pit crew could shave a hundredth, or even a tenth of a second off the stop, Kai might still be able to violently overturn the board. Kai had already emptied his soul on the asphalt. Now it was entirely up to the mechanics. They absolutely refused to betray their captain’s agonizing efforts.

Right at that exact second.

”Box, box!” The command crackled over the radio. Clear, who had been coiled like a tightly wound spring, surged into action. Within three blindingly fast seconds, the entire crew was positioned and locked in.

Out on the track, Kai had been obsessively monitoring the degrading rubber. He had pushed for eight grueling laps since the Mercedes pit stops. He knew the window wasn’t fully open, but continuing to force the issue offered only two lethal outcomes. Either Hamilton, armed with fresh Mediums, would begin rapidly chewing into the gap, or the SF90’s abused Hard tires would suffer a catastrophic, unannounced cliff-drop.

There was no third option.

So, Kai decisively seized the initiative and called the box.

Lap 47. Kai initiated a berserker sprint.

Sector One: Purple.

Sector Two: Purple.

He violently shattered the equilibrium. Going entirely full throttle, Kai unleashed the terrifying, unhinged pace of a Q3 qualifying run, wringing every last microscopic drop of performance out of the chassis before diving violently into the pit lane.

In a flash, the entire world stopped breathing. The broadcast feed violently split into a dual perspective. One camera tracked the scarlet Number 22 slotting into the pit box. The other tracked the silver Number 44 and Number 77, both of which were currently aggressively elevating their own pace on the main straight.

As if orchestrated by a silent conductor, the crowd held its collective breath. The cheers, the chatter, the very sound of respiration evaporated from the air. The only thing remaining was the visceral roar of the V6 hybrids injecting raw adrenaline straight into their veins.

Thump, thump. Thump, thump. Pulses hammered against temples.

”Ferrari pit crew, an absolutely blistering 2.1 seconds! A phenomenal stop!”

The shout was sharp and explosive, but it instantly vanished into the void as every pair of eyes in the Ferrari garage locked onto the Number 22. They held their breath, tracking the car as it blasted down the pit exit toward the apex of Turn 1. A silver blur and a red blur were converging violently upon the exact same piece of asphalt.

It was like Mars colliding with Earth.

The live feed perfectly captured the entrance to Turn 1. The main straight lay to the right, the pit exit fed in from the left. A violent, physical division of fire and ocean.

On the right, a massive silver tidal wave surged forward, the harmonious, lethal whine of the Mercedes engine radiating the calm, absolute authority of a reigning king. On the left, a scarlet inferno roared, sparking with unbridled passion and a terrifying, world-ending momentum fueled by pure, unadulterated willpower.

The air turned to solid concrete. Even the darkest corners of the pit garages were paralyzed by the tension.

Mercedes had been so arrogantly confident. They firmly believed Kai’s overcut attempt possessed zero chance of success. Absolutely no one had anticipated the margins would be this terrifyingly thin. Kai’s lawless, desperate gamble had actually torn open a microscopic tear in their armor. That lethal dagger was currently pressed flush against Mercedes’ throat.

The only question was: Whose throat? Hamilton’s, or Bottas’s?

Blasting directly into the center of the broadcast frame was the silver Number 44. The entire venue gasped, completely starved of oxygen. The world froze.

Thump, thump. Li Lingyu could clearly hear the violent slamming of her own heart, almost mistaking it for the roar of an engine.

Through the camera lens, the two cars became streaks of light. They were slightly staggered, but effectively side-by-side. Hamilton possessed a microscopic advantage.

”AHHHHHHH!” The Mercedes fans erupted.

Ultimately, Mercedes’ blistering out-laps during the second phase paid off. Hamilton held a half-car-length lead, firmly securing the optimal track position. Hamilton had the ultimate initiative.

Yet, Hamilton didn’t feel a single ounce of triumph. His nerves were stretched to the absolute breaking point. He fundamentally refused to underestimate this terrifyingly aggressive youth. He was preparing to channel 120% of his energy into a brutal, head-to-head dogfight.

Hamilton possessed the track position to aggressively chop the inside line and monopolize the apex, but he consciously chose not to. He acutely understood the massive disparity in tire temperatures. His Yellow Mediums had been absorbing punishment for nine laps; they were deeply baked into their optimal operating window. Kai, having just dropped off the jacks, was fighting on completely cold rubber. Mercedes had to ruthlessly exploit that vulnerability.

Wait. Red?

Hamilton shot a rapid glance at his mirrors and briefly froze. Kai, who had completely shattered everyone’s projected rhythms during the second phase, had somehow dragged that set of Hard tires through a staggering twenty-three laps. There were only eight laps remaining in the entire Grand Prix. While the rest of the grid, including Leclerc, had bolted on the durable Mediums, Kai had completely inverted the established logic.

The first stint, the second stint, every single, agonizing step of the strategy. Kai had never been plotting a three-stop race. His crosshairs had been locked entirely on securing a massive, terrifying tire advantage for the final sprint.

Red Soft tires.

Regardless of whether the overcut physically worked or not, Ferrari’s true, lethal gamble rested entirely on the absolute, overwhelming grip advantage of the Soft compound in the closing laps.

Oh, shit.

Hamilton’s heart violently contracted. In that microscopic flash of realization, it all clicked. Since Lap 4, through every single feint and parry, regardless of who appeared to hold the initiative, they had never actually escaped Ferrari’s overarching master plan. Mercedes believed they had shattered the equilibrium and flipped the board, but in reality, they had never stepped out of that suffocating scarlet shadow.

Here in Shanghai, Ferrari’s strategy had achieved an absolute, flawless victory.

However, the panic lasted for a mere fraction of a second. A lifetime of championship experience forcefully dragged Hamilton back to absolute rationality. His newly awakened fighting spirit surged, demanding he give absolutely everything he had. Precisely because of the tire delta, yielding was no longer an option. The exact second Kai’s Softs hit their optimal temperature window, the situation would mutate from difficult to impossible.

But this wasn’t the checkered flag. Mercedes still held a trump card. As long as Hamilton defended his position, forcefully plunging Kai into his turbulent dirty air, and Bottas applied relentless, suffocating pressure from behind, they could aggressively accelerate the degradation of Kai’s fragile Softs. The inherent performance flaws of the SF90 would ultimately betray all of Kai’s brilliant efforts.

That was the brutal reality of the turbo-hybrid era. You could outsmart the entire grid, only to be ultimately betrayed by your own machinery.

In that brief, fleeting moment, every single hair on Hamilton’s arms stood on end. It had been an incredibly long time since he had felt his blood boil with such pure, unadulterated combat lust. It was arguably even more intense than the brawls at Interlagos and Yas Marina.

Even though Kai’s tires had swapped from Yellow Mediums to Red Softs, Hamilton remained entirely unbothered. He didn’t alter his immediate defensive strategy. Cold rubber was cold rubber, even if the sidewalls were painted red. Just like the race start, where Hamilton utilized the W10’s superior tire warm-up to effortlessly box out both Ferraris, he fully intended to use his heavily-baked Mediums to violently slam the door in Kai’s face right now.

Hamilton didn’t aggressively dive-bomb the apex. Instead, he deliberately left the right-side inside line wide open, actively baiting Kai into executing a desperate, late-braking maneuver to steal the corner.

A Ferrari suffering from the catastrophic lack of mechanical grip inherent to cold tires simply couldn’t take that risk. It would be like a spider trying to sprint on ice skates. Push even slightly too hard, and the chassis would violently lose its balance. It would understeer, spin out, or completely butcher the mid-corner rhythm.

Hamilton simply needed to command the outside line, utilizing a superior mid-corner flow to effortlessly maintain control and brush the arrogant kid aside without breaking a sweat.

Objectively, Hamilton’s trap was brilliant. If Kai were driving the W10, he would have laid the exact same bait. Throw your opponent into a sweet, irresistible trap. Watch them desperately lunge for the apex, completely blind to the fact they are diving headfirst into quicksand.

However, Kai was not just any ordinary driver. The exact microsecond he processed Hamilton’s chosen racing line, the alarm bells shrieked in his brain. The Ferrari pit crew had executed an otherworldly stop to buy him this microscopic lifeline. He had absolutely zero intention of squandering it on a reckless lunge.

Look.

Kai completely refused to flip the board in a fit of rebellious aggression. Avoiding any sudden, jerky movements, he fluidly slotted into the exact opening Hamilton had deliberately left, obediently hugging the inside curb.

Hamilton currently held the positional high ground, leading by half a car length. But Kai flatly rejected the late-braking bait. He didn’t desperately try to force the overtake at Turn 1. Staying entirely within his own calculated rhythm, he applied the brakes at the exact, optimal marker, gliding smoothly and gently toward the apex like a gentle spring breeze.

The visual geometry instantly snapped into sharp focus. Hamilton, holding the dominant outside line, carried immense momentum. Kai, having abandoned the late-braking duel, was seemingly left trailing in his wake. That half-car-length deficit rapidly expanded to a full car length. They hadn’t even exited Turn 1, and Hamilton had already broken the tow.

Hamilton didn’t relax his guard for a microsecond. He meticulously held his optimal racing line. But directly behind Hamilton’s gearbox, Kai executed a microscopically precise steering input. With a lethal, subtle flick, he snapped the SF90 from the inside line straight across to the outside line.

The Switchback.

The opening complex of the Shanghai circuit is a notoriously brutal, tightening spiral. Turn 1 bleeds directly into Turn 2. The entire T2-T3-T4 sequence can be viewed as either three distinct corners or one agonizingly long, continuous right-hander.

When Hamilton exited Turn 1 and aggressively plunged into Turn 2, his natural racing line dragged him from the outside back toward the inside curb. Kai, perfectly executing the switchback, carved from the inside to the outside, staying glued to Hamilton’s gearbox like a heat-seeking missile.

Hamilton remained completely unfazed. Transitioning from Turn 2 into Turn 3, he let the W10 drift naturally from the inside back out to the wide line.

But absolutely no one anticipated Kai’s next move. He violently snapped the SF90 from the outside back to the inside.

A double switchback.

Generally speaking, cold Soft tires suffer from pathetic longitudinal grip, but their lateral grip comes up to temperature significantly faster. Kai had brilliantly exploited this specific physical characteristic. Combining it with the unique, spiraling geometry of the Shanghai complex, he audaciously executed two consecutive cutbacks, carving a completely insane, utterly unpredictable racing line.

As the corner rapidly changed direction once again, the two violently claustrophobic cars remained pinned to their respective trajectories. Their relative track positioning organically inverted yet again. Now, Hamilton was trapped on the inside, while Kai dominated the outside.

In the span of three breathless seconds, their track positions had flipped multiple times. The sheer speed of the exchange was blinding. Ocean and inferno violently tangled together. Silver suppressed red, red bullied silver. It looked like two mythological gods brawling in the heavens. The breathtaking collision of colors and afterimages completely detonated the atmosphere at the circuit.

And then.

Deep within the absolute narrowest, most turbulent choke-point of the entire complex, right before they were violently spat out of Turn 3, the silver Number 44 desperately hugged the inside apex. The scarlet Number 22, however, utilized the wider arc of the corner to paint a flawless, sweeping parabola. The two fiercely entangled afterimages briefly, violently separated.

The visual feed cleared. The distinct silhouettes of the two chassis came into sharp relief. The suffocating, bayonets-drawn tension that had been building between them finally shattered its containment and erupted into the atmosphere.

The crowd stopped breathing entirely.

Look. The red car was still technically trailing the silver one, with more than half its chassis lagging behind.

However, within the brutally claustrophobic confines of the corner, neither car could fully unleash its power. Kai, positioned on the outside with a significantly wider, more flowing arc, had actively manufactured vastly more operational space. In stark contrast, Hamilton, pinned to the intensely tight, violently sharp inside line, was completely compressed. He was choked off, fighting the steering wheel as if his hands and feet were bound by heavy chains.

Left with absolutely no alternative, the Number 44 relied entirely on the overwhelming mechanical superiority of the Mercedes chassis to desperately cling to the apex, trying to brutally muscle past his opponent.

It was glaringly obvious. The Number 22 was flawlessly compressing the track, weaponizing the topographic layout of the circuit to its absolute maximum potential. The Number 44 looked visibly ragged. The left-side front and rear tires had already scrubbed completely past the white line and off the exit curbs, dipping violently into the runoff area. Hamilton was teetering dangerously on the very edge of the cliff.

Bouncing, vibrating, violently wrestling with the steering. He was millimeters away from violating track limits.

GASP.

The entire grandstand inhaled a sharp, collective breath of freezing air.

Hamilton’s hands could physically feel the violent, concussive impacts shooting up through the steering column. The cockpit felt as though it were enduring a localized meteor strike. Even though they hadn’t made physical contact yet, the dense, suffocating wave of turbulent dirty air generated by the Ferrari was aggressively destabilizing the W10’s aerodynamic balance.

Hamilton had never, in his wildest dreams, anticipated Kai being this utterly, certifiably insane. Not even Michael Schumacher’s legendary, mind-bending overtake on Alonso through the T11-T12-T13 complex had utilized an approach this extreme. Kai had actually executed a double switchback, continuously inverting their track positions, squeezing the absolute, maximum theoretical limit out of the circuit’s topography.

Fingers locked in a death grip. Hamilton threw his entire body weight against the chassis, fighting the crushing G-forces. Jaw clenched tight enough to crack teeth, a lethal, murderous aura radiated from the reigning champion. He poured everything he had into manipulating the center of gravity, violently wrestling the bouncing, vibrating car back into submission. He absolutely refused to yield a single inch of asphalt.

Simultaneously, that scarlet blur on cold tires was gliding along the outer edge of the corner’s arc. Like a flower blooming in agonizing slow-motion, as it swept through Turn 3 and plunged into Turn 4, the chassis slowly, methodically uncoiled. Unhurried, completely devoid of panic, Kai utilized a significantly more stable, deeply connected mid-corner rhythm to paint a terrifyingly beautiful masterpiece through Shanghai’s most iconic complex.

And then, inch by agonizing inch, he devoured the gap, pulling dead level with that flash of silver.

Before Li Lingyu could even exhale the stale air trapped in her lungs, the silver and red blurs had violently tangled together once again. Neck and neck. Wheel-to-wheel. Shoulder-to-shoulder. Plunging blindly into Turn 4.

VROOM. VROOM.

The very air was combusting. Hearts on the verge of catastrophic detonation froze in the 0.001 seconds before the explosion, staring in dumbstruck horror at the two violently intertwined machines.

Contact.

The leading edge of Kai’s front-left tire slammed against the trailing edge of Hamilton’s front-right tire. In the ensuing chaos, it was impossible to tell if the sparks were erupting from the carbon-fiber sidepods or the wheel rims. A sharp puff of white tire smoke instantly materialized, only to be violently ripped away by the hurricane-force winds before it could fully billow. The entire world forgot how to breathe.

”Hamilton is racing dirty!”

”Kai jumped the line! Foul!”

The Mercedes loyalists and the Tifosi leaped to their feet simultaneously, screaming in outrage. Pure, unadulterated fury and anxiety boiled over. But before they could continue trading insults, their hearts violently shoved their way up their throats, completely blocking their airways. They stood paralyzed, muscles locked tight.

”Collision!” Crofty screamed, before his voice was abruptly choked off. His eyes widened to the size of saucers as he watched the carnage unfold.

The two cars, having engaged in a suffocating, high-wire standoff for multiple corners, finally crossed the threshold upon entering Turn 4. They collided. The violent kinetic transfer instantly kicked both chassis off their optimal trajectories.

Inside the eye of the storm, the two wheel-to-wheel machines traded a sharp, brutal impact. The reactionary force violently shoved them apart. Wobbling erratically, fighting massive instability, they both plunged headlong into Turn 4.

In that microscopic window of chaos, Kai completely anticipated this exact scenario. He unleashed another display of otherworldly, limit-shattering car control. A rapid-fire sequence of micro-corrections applied directly to the throttle. He didn’t mash the pedal to the floor, nor did he rapidly pump it. He utilized a feather-light, microscopic touch to continuously adjust the torque output amidst the violent turbulence. It was like watching a man fighting to keep his balance while walking a tightrope in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane. He rode the absolute ragged edge of the white line marking the outside boundary of Turn 4.

Teetering on the brink of disaster.

Moments ago, it was Hamilton millimeters away from violating track limits. Now, it was Kai’s turn staring down the barrel of a penalty.

But Kai didn’t have a single millisecond to waste worrying about white lines. His eyes were already locked entirely on the exit of Turn 4, calculating the trajectory for the upcoming straight.

The steering corrections were dialed in. The rear wing was still twitching with latent instability. Kai applied a perfectly timed, delicate tap to the throttle. That gentle surge of power aggressively dragged the rear wing down, heavily loading the rear tires and planting them firmly onto the asphalt. He could practically feel the abrasive texture of the track surface vibrating through the chassis. Then, he applied the final surge of power.

Full throttle. Pinned to the floor.

VROOM-VROOM-VROOM.

The familiar, visceral howl of the V6 turbo-hybrid violently filled the vacuum left by the chaotic storm. The Number 22 completely shed its wobbling instability, transforming into a lethal, scarlet afterimage.

His exit speed and rhythm were vastly superior. He launched out of Turn 4 a crucial fraction of a second earlier than his rival. Blasting down the short straight, he had already established a half-car-length advantage over the Number 44 before anyone could even blink.

Hamilton was violently jolted. Despite his own miraculous, lightning-fast corrections to save the car, his positioning and angle exiting the corner were fundamentally compromised. He was trapped in a severe velocity deficit. By the time he finally managed to mash the throttle to the floor to give chase, it was done.

It was too late.

”KAI! KAI! KAI!” The sheer, hot-blooded adrenaline finally detonated. Crofty completely lost his grip on the English language, devolving into a manic, ecstatic chant of a single name, his entire body shaking uncontrollably.

”Good god! Kai takes the lead!”

”Absolutely unparalleled! Completely unbelievable! A genuinely spectacular, elite-tier display of car control! An undeniably epic performance! Kai just authored an absolute masterclass through the T2-3-4 complex! Meticulous calculation, flawless strategic layout, and perfect execution! He relied entirely on pure exit speed and straight-line traction to seal the deal!”

”Ladies and gentlemen, with only eight laps remaining, Kai has officially overtaken Lewis Hamilton to lead the Shanghai Grand Prix!”

”The overcut. It actually worked?” The exact second the words left his mouth, Crofty froze, stunned both by his own statement and the unbelievable reality playing out on the monitors.

Ferrari’s inherent superiority in straight-line speed and high-speed corners was put on full, terrifying display. After exiting Turn 4, Kai violently tore through the short straight and Turn 5. That meager front-wing advantage rapidly ballooned into a full car length, brutally stuffing Hamilton firmly into his rearview mirrors.

The entire board had been violently inverted.

The meticulous, step-by-step layout had begun all the way back in the first stint. Even though Brundle had accurately decoded Kai’s underlying calculations, actually witnessing the kid pull off such an impossible, monumental feat still left him profoundly shell-shocked. He genuinely couldn’t believe his own eyes. The word ’shocked’ wasn’t even remotely sufficient to describe the hurricane raging in his chest.

Crofty turned and shot his partner a wild look. ”Am I allowed to swear on live television?”

Brundle perfectly understood the sentiment, letting out a sharp bark of laughter.

The world devolving into absolute bedlam.

The Mercedes fans were detonating. The Tifosi were detonating. The only difference was that the Mercedes camp was screaming bloody murder about an illegal collision at Turn 4, while the Tifosi completely ignored the whining, throwing themselves into wild, ecstatic celebration. This was the very first time in the entire 2019 season that Ferrari had cleanly overtaken Mercedes in a pure, head-to-head, on-track dogfight.

Within three to five seconds, the world had been turned completely upside down. The FIA immediately flashed a notification that the incident was under investigation.

But before social media could even begin to process the controversy, and long before the rival fanbases could finish screaming at each other, the situation out on the asphalt mutated yet again.

Hamilton was launching a lethal counter-attack.

It was glaringly obvious. Hamilton knew exactly how microscopic his window of opportunity was. He had to violently strike right now, exploiting the brief period before Kai’s red Softs fully entered their optimal temperature window, to aggressively snatch his track position back.

There was no panic, no frantic desperation. Having just lost the lead, Hamilton actually dialed his focus into an even more terrifying, lethal state. Completely ignoring all external distractions, he relentlessly absorbed the brutal, turbulent dirty air through Sector 2 and Sector 3. He stayed glued to Kai’s gearbox, firmly anchored within DRS range, absolutely refusing to yield an inch.

He was practicing lethal patience. Waiting in the shadows for the perfect opening. Preparing for a single, fatal strike.

Stay calm. Stay calm.

Absolute, icy calm.

That was the only keyword that mattered. Hamilton’s concentration reached a state of absolute, hyper-focused zen. The deeper his anger and frustration burned, the more he required pure, terrifying rationality. He couldn’t afford to rush.

He intimately understood Kai’s terrifying capabilities. The kid’s instincts, his hyper-awareness, his razor-sharp vigilance. Even the most microscopic lapse in judgment would result in Hamilton squandering his final, golden opportunity.

And so, Hamilton maintained his suffocating presence inside Kai’s DRS window, yet entirely refused to pull the trigger. He was like a silver dagger pressed firmly against Kai’s spine. Even though Kai currently held the race lead, he couldn’t afford to relax for a single microsecond, let alone celebrate. That razor-sharp blade was resting directly against his carotid artery.

The slightest sudden movement, and Hamilton would violently slice his throat open, entirely overturning the board without a shred of mercy.

The psychological pressure was massive, and it was compounding by the second.

Kai knew perfectly well that Hamilton was lurking in the slipstream, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. The terrifying problem was that Kai had absolutely no way of predicting exactly when Hamilton would launch the assault. The lethal crisis was glaringly obvious, right there in his mirrors, but the timing of the detonation remained a complete mystery. The sensation was agonizing.

It was exactly like being securely strapped to a live explosive. The bomb was primed and ticking, but he was completely blind to the digital countdown timer. He had zero idea when the fireball would consume him.

That specific breed of terror, that suffocating anxiety born from a highly specific, lethal threat shrouded in complete unpredictability. It amplified the panic a hundredfold. It was more than enough to drive a man completely insane. It was arguably vastly more terrifying than the physical explosion itself.

That was exactly the psychological torture Hamilton was trying to inflict.

Kai understood the tactic intimately. If their positions were reversed, he would be executing the exact same psychological warfare. In fact, he had done it to Hamilton multiple times last season.

Now, the roles of hunter and hunted had violently inverted. The critical detail was that, at this exact moment, Mercedes’ chassis and tires genuinely held the upper hand. Even though Kai was technically the race leader, he was the one staring down the barrel of a massive disadvantage. He felt exactly like a fragile gazelle desperately trying to outrun a starving T-Rex.

So, what was the optimal counter-play?

Absolute, stony inaction.

Right now, even though this was fundamentally a battle of raw driver skill and chassis performance, the true war was being waged entirely in the psychological realm. It was a high-stakes staring contest between predator and prey.

As the prey, any sudden, frantic movement or display of panic would instantly trigger a fatal collapse. Attempting a desperate, preemptive strike would only serve to hand the ultimate initiative directly back to the hunter. He needed to fully weaponize his track position and exploit Hamilton’s desperate psychological need to secure the kill. He knew Hamilton was going to attack, and he knew Hamilton couldn’t afford to wait much longer. Therefore, while Hamilton was playing the patience game, Kai needed to be infinitely more patient. He had to drop his heart rate to zero, firmly plant his feet into the asphalt, and violently shove all the crushing pressure directly back onto his opponent.

If the enemy doesn’t move, I don’t move.

It was the ultimate test of who possessed the colder blood. Kai wasn’t the one racing the clock. He was perfectly content to simply sit in the lead and log laps until his red Softs fully baked into their optimal temperature window. Once that happened, he could easily unleash his own offensive pace. Time was entirely on his side. The man desperately needing to exploit this rapidly closing temporal window was absolutely not him.

The two cars remained locked in this agonizing standoff. The suffocating, predatory tension of the chase continued to boil over.

Sector 2 passed without a single incident. Sector 3 was eerily calm.

Even though Hamilton remained hopelessly entangled in Kai’s DRS window, absorbing a lethal amount of dirty air, he didn’t project a single ounce of panic. As the lap rapidly approached its conclusion, the Number 44 still hadn’t shown its hand. Regardless, he still possessed two more laps to force the issue.

And then, it happened.

Without a single microscopic warning sign, shattering the eerie calm just as Sector 3 was drawing to a close. Exiting Turn 13 and blasting onto the absolute longest, highest-speed straight of the entire Shanghai circuit. The exact sector where Ferrari possessed their most terrifying, undisputed top-speed advantage. Hamilton launched a sudden, unimaginably violent assault.

Slipstream. Pull out. DRS wide open.

A flawless, fluid execution.

It wasn’t just a surprise attack; it was a meticulously calculated ambush. This wasn’t something Kai could simply defend against with raw reflexes. It was a pure display of absolute, overwhelming mechanical superiority. It was the perfect, lethal synchronization of chassis and circuit topography. Hamilton afforded Kai absolutely zero breathing room to mount a defense. The Number 44 pulled dead level with the Number 22. Wheel-to-wheel once again.

Approaching the Turn 14 hairpin, Hamilton had preemptively seized the inside line. He firmly established absolute dominance over both the racing line and the track position, ruthlessly suffocating every last inch of usable space.

This wasn’t just raw power. It was the flawless fusion of timing, track position, and elite racecraft. It was the exact same spot where Daniel Ricciardo had violently dispatched both Hamilton and Vettel last season, refusing to offer either World Champion a single millimeter of mercy, completing the overtakes with absolute, tyrannical authority.

History was repeating itself. Hamilton was extracting 120% of the grip from his perfectly primed Medium tires, violently seizing total control of the engagement.

Kai was left completely defenseless.

”Ladies and gentlemen, Lewis Hamilton!”

”He launches the attack!”

”He has the inside line! He’s at the apex! Maximum late braking!”

”Kai is completely powerless to stop it! Good god, Hamilton snatches the lead right back!”

So, was this truly the end? Had Hamilton flawlessly executed the kill, leaving Kai zero room for a counter-attack, violently extinguishing every last ember of hope?

No. Absolutely not. Perhaps a lesser driver would have broken, but Kai completely refused to wave the white flag.

Was the attack a surprise? Slightly.

But was it genuinely, completely unpredictable? Not really.

The massive back straight leading into the Turn 14 hairpin was the absolute most iconic, high-percentage overtaking zone on the entire Shanghai circuit. If the attacking driver executed the setup flawlessly, the defending driver was essentially a sitting duck.

Furthermore, Hamilton currently wielded a massive, undeniable tire advantage.

Therefore, Kai had been maintaining absolute vigilance. He had been preparing for this exact scenario. If Hamilton hadn’t attacked here, Kai would have undoubtedly faced a completely different set of terrifying problems. But since Hamilton had chosen this specific battleground, Kai had already formulated the optimal counter-measure.

Exactly as predicted.

Hamilton still lacked a certain degree of wild imagination. It wasn’t that he was overly conservative; he was simply agonizingly methodical. He had actively ignored the other potential, riskier overtaking zones in Sector 3, specifically selecting the highest-percentage option.

Everything was unfolding entirely within Kai’s predictive models.

Kai didn’t instinctively violently chop to the right to block the inside line, because he knew perfectly well Hamilton wouldn’t tolerate it. If Kai attempted a desperate, reactive block at this exact moment, it would highly likely be penalized as an illegal defensive maneuver. With Hamilton already firmly established in the dominant offensive position, any forced defensive chop that resulted in contact or pushed Hamilton off the track would result in an immediate, non-negotiable ten-second time penalty.

Not only did Kai refuse to chop right, he actually proactively drifted slightly to the left, opening up the outside line even further.

Hamilton, whose threat-detection radar was dialed to maximum sensitivity, noticed the drift instantly. He immediately decoded Kai’s underlying intention. In the chaotic, high-speed violence of the dogfight, Kai’s subconscious instinct was to run a wide, sweeping arc around the outside of the hairpin. He wanted to utilize a vastly more stable mid-corner rhythm to stay glued to Hamilton’s side, and then exploit a superior exit speed down the following short straight to violently invert the positions.

The scenario was agonizingly familiar. It was the exact same tactical maneuver Kai had just successfully executed back at Turn 4.

Kai was trying to play the exact same trick twice.

How could Hamilton possibly be unprepared? A single glance was all it took to completely dismantle Kai’s entire strategic calculation. A parlor trick might work once, but deploying it a second time against a World Champion was an insult. It had zero chance of success.

How would Hamilton respond?

He didn’t make any sudden, erratic movements. He stubbornly maintained his own trajectory, flatly refusing to be sucked into Kai’s rhythm. The only thing he needed to do was significantly delay his braking point.

Executing a massive late-braking maneuver served two lethal purposes. First, it allowed Hamilton to aggressively hug the apex, fully exploiting his superior mechanical grip to violently carve through the hairpin. Second, it allowed him to aggressively occupy the track width, violently compressing the available racing line on the exit. This would force Kai into an agonizingly wide, massive arc on the outside. Not only would Kai bleed massive amounts of time, but his crucial exit speed would be completely, fatally compromised.

Two birds with one stone.

Without breaking a single drop of sweat, Hamilton could weaponize his current advantage to its absolute theoretical maximum, simultaneously shoving Kai directly off a cliff.

Kai vs. Hamilton. Wheel-to-Wheel 2.0.

Kai refused to brake. Hamilton refused to brake. Because Hamilton knew Kai possessed significantly more runoff space on the outside, he knew Kai could afford to delay his braking point slightly further. Therefore, Hamilton had to find the absolute, razor-edge limit of his braking capabilities entering Turn 14. That was the only way to plunge Kai into an inescapable nightmare.

Both cars had already blown miles past the standard braking markers. One meter. Two meters. Three meters.

However, in this terrifying game of high-speed chicken, the invisible, lethal tension between the two drivers was skyrocketing. Neither man was willing to be the first to flinch and hit the pedal.

Four meters. Five meters.

Finally.

Kai stomped on the brakes.

Hamilton felt a massive surge of relief. Without a microsecond of hesitation, he immediately slammed on his own brakes. However, the four-time World Champion instantly realized something was catastrophically wrong.
