F1: The Speed Legend

The threat was real, and it had arrived.

Like a jagged dagger, it plunged viciously, violently straight into the heart of Mercedes-Benz. The louder and more chaotic the outside world became, the more suffocatingly tight and stagnant the air inside the silver garage grew.

Everything seemed to freeze for a microscopic fraction of a second.

They had genuinely believed that Kai wouldn’t take any massive risks during the second variable phase. They assumed it was exactly like the first phase—a meticulously crafted illusion, merely posturing and shadowboxing. But clearly—

They were dead wrong.

Out on the asphalt, Bottas realized the terrifying, rolling crisis bearing down upon him significantly faster than anyone else. He didn’t need the pit wall to tell him whether Kai had just set another purple sector. All he had to do was check his rearview mirrors. He could perfectly gauge the exact position and rapidly shrinking distance of that red blur. That razor-sharp edge, like a longsword drawn from its scabbard, was continuously, aggressively closing in.

A profound, suffocating sense of oppression, a lethal threat, a terrifying deterrence—it wrapped tightly, painfully around his heart.

At this exact moment, Bottas desperately wanted to scream over the radio, ”I told you so! I fucking told you so!” He had anticipated this exact scenario. However, that simply wasn’t his personality. He completely ignored the pit wall. His immediate, instinctual reaction was to focus entirely on himself and continue elevating his own pace—

His target was the championship victory. He absolutely refused to sacrifice himself.

And then, Vowles’ voice finally crackled over the radio. ”Valtteri, it’s James. Watch the tires!”

In a rapidly evolving, high-stakes battle, absolute calm plays the most critical, life-or-death role. They had to maintain total command over the broader strategic picture, maintaining the hypersensitivity required to extract the crucial, defining details from a massive, chaotic ocean of telemetry data.

Vowles embodied exactly that. Despite the shock, despite the bewilderment, he maintained his icy rationality—

The temperatures on Bottas’s front axle were spiking rapidly. His speed was significantly higher than their optimal projections. This was particularly true for the front-left tire. The degradation curve displayed on the computer monitors was not optimistic. After continuously bearing immense, sustained lateral loads through the long, sweeping right-handers, it was highly probable the tire was already beginning to exhibit faint signs of graining.

It wasn’t yet ”dangerous,” but it was undeniably no longer ”clean.”

Vowles absolutely had to warn Bottas. Vowles could only see the raw numbers on a screen; he couldn’t physically inspect the actual condition of the rubber.

”There’s some slight wear,” Bottas replied, his tone intensely restrained and clipped.

However, Vowles had already triggered the internal alarm bells. Judging purely by the current state of the tires, the situation wasn’t inherently critical. The true, terrifying problem was this: they were only on Lap 10 of the second variable phase.

In other words, this specific set of Hard tires had already been forcefully dragged into a high-load, high-stress operational zone far, far too early. Consequently, the crucial elasticity and performance buffer these tires were supposed to provide for the remainder of the stint was being rapidly, aggressively overdrafted.

Vowles steadied his breathing. ”Valtteri, Kai will not continue to elevate his pace—” Ferrari simply didn’t possess the foundational strength. The SF90 was fundamentally incapable of sustaining Kai’s continuous, aggressive extraction. Therefore, the current scenario was exactly like the first variable phase: it was merely a bluff. A deceptive posture explicitly designed to shatter Mercedes-Benz’s rhythm.

They absolutely could not allow themselves to be sucked in.

Before Vowles could finish his sentence, Bottas violently cut him off. ”And so what?!”

Bottas was profoundly, deeply frustrated. A heavy, suffocating knot of anger blocked his chest. The person currently enduring the massive, terrifying, physical pressure exerted by Kai wasn’t the strategists sitting comfortably behind their desks throwing out casual observations. If Bottas lost his track position right now, the entire Mercedes-Benz team and all their fans would universally, viciously blame him. Absolutely no one would spare a single thought for the impossible predicament he was currently trapped in.

If it were Hamilton under attack, they would condemn Kai’s aggression. But because it was Bottas, no one would offer him an ounce of sympathy.

”If I reduce my pace even slightly, are you absolutely, 100% certain he won’t attack?! Maybe he doesn’t currently possess the ultimate pace to pass me cleanly, but if he sees an opening, do you honestly believe he’s just going to politely decline?”

”That is KAI out there! James!”

In an incredibly rare display, genuine, burning anger bled visibly into Bottas’s voice.

Vowles: ...

Vowles was a man of extreme, absolute rationality. His judgment was very, very rarely clouded by personal emotion. He completely disregarded the raw anger radiating from Bottas’s words, choosing instead to meticulously analyze the underlying logic of the statement.

It was undeniably true. Given Kai’s aggressive, predatory nature, if he saw a genuine opening, he would absolutely, definitively strike. Even if it required taking a massive risk. Exactly like the insane two-stop gamble at Albert Park.

A terrifying possibility rapidly flashed through Vowles’ mind. What if Mercedes-Benz beat Ferrari at their own game? What if they deliberately lured Kai into launching a full-scale attack, allowed the situation to unfold naturally, and ultimately, after a grueling, tire-destroying dogfight, simply allowed Kai to pass if he proved capable? Both Bottas and Hamilton could execute this maneuver. By intentionally surrendering the lead to Kai, they could definitively test whether Kai was truly capable of tearing open a pit window and utilizing a three-stop strategy to completely overturn the race narrative.

The thought lingered for barely a fraction of a second before Vowles decisively vetoed it—

73%. That was the precise success probability Vowles had mentally calculated for Kai in that specific scenario. For any other driver on the grid, the probability of success would be less than 10%. But because it was Kai... the equation fundamentally changed.

Mercedes-Benz simply could not afford to take that gamble.

Therefore, Mercedes-Benz’s rhythm absolutely, definitively could not be reduced.

The instant they slowed down, Kai would immediately close the gap again.

The instant he closed the gap, Mercedes-Benz would be plunged right back into the exact same vicious, agonizing cycle of indecision and reactive maneuvering. The second variable phase would simply become a carbon copy of the disastrous first phase.

It was an incredibly stupid, highly inefficient choice. It was entirely un-Mercedes-Benz.

In Vowles’ assessment, maintaining their current rhythm and sustaining the pressure was the only viable path. They needed to keep Kai dangling on the hook—close enough to see the bait, but far enough away that he could never actually spot a vulnerability. They would adapt fluidly based on Kai’s specific strategic choices, ultimately relying on the sheer, overwhelming performance superiority of the Mercedes-Benz chassis to brutally devour Ferrari. That was the only objectively correct answer.

Even though they had already severely deviated from their meticulously pre-planned trajectory, under the current, highly volatile circumstances, this remained Mercedes-Benz’s safest, most intelligent strategic option.

Vowles immediately relayed his recommendation to Wolff and the strategy group, waiting for the final, authoritative confirmation.

Almost simultaneously, Hamilton also detected the subtle anomaly.

He didn’t need telemetry data; he relied entirely on pure, visceral instinct—

That agonizingly familiar sensation of being forced into an artificially elongated, uncomfortable rhythm. That specific, localized tire load that absolutely shouldn’t be happening right now, yet undeniably was.

”Bono, I need confirmation.” Hamilton’s voice was incredibly stable, though his speaking cadence was slightly more rapid than usual. ”What exactly is happening out there right now?”

”It’s Kai again, isn’t it?”

Bono didn’t respond immediately.

However, that brief, fleeting microsecond of silence was more than enough to confirm the truth.

The answer was glaringly obvious. Starting all the way back on Lap 4, they hadn’t been running their own optimal, calculated rhythm for a single second. They hadn’t been overtaken, and they hadn’t been forced into a desperate, defensive posture. Yet, infuriatingly, humiliatingly, idiotically... they were being led around by the nose by a single driver.

It made him feel deeply, viscerally uncomfortable.

Incredibly. Intensely. Uncomfortable.

”So, are we just planning to remain completely passive and let this continue?” Hamilton shot a rapid, aggressive glance into his rearview mirror at the irritating, restless flash of silver that simply refused to fade away. Even though he tried with all his might to maintain control, the surging, boiling agitation in his chest was practically impossible to suppress.

Since when did Mercedes-Benz become this incredibly passive, reactive, and weak in strategic warfare?

And exactly when did Hamilton cease to be the aggressive, independent, fiercely arrogant youth he once was? Facing the terrifying, menacing momentum of Kai’s relentless assaults... he had already lost the war in 2018. And this year, in Melbourne, he had once again been brutally suppressed. So, was he genuinely prepared to tuck his head into his shell like a cowardly turtle and continue silently swallowing these insults?

And now, it wasn’t just Kai! Even Bottas was starting to get bold, completely unable to endure the boredom!

So, was Lewis Hamilton officially viewed as a soft target that absolutely anyone could bully and walk all over?

A raging inferno ignited within Hamilton’s chest, burning wildly out of control—

Anger?

No. Fighting spirit. It was pure, unadulterated passion and boiling blood fully, violently awakening deep within Hamilton’s very soul.

However, at this exact moment, the man who was truly exerting absolute, dictatorial control over the entire situation appeared remarkably, unnervingly quiet.

Kai hadn’t continued to aggressively elevate his pace. He wasn’t continuously shattering the fastest lap record anymore.

1:37.207.

1:36.913.

Stable, perfectly even, almost bordering on conservative. It was profoundly baffling. Looking at the SF90, you could almost hallucinate faint traces of the W10’s signature consistency—

He wasn’t setting the absolute fastest laps on the track, but he was continuously, relentlessly outputting incredibly fast, highly stable lap times.

But... was that actually, physically possible? From Bahrain to Shanghai, had the SF90 somehow magically, miraculously transformed itself entirely? Had it executed a complete 180-degree turn, becoming entirely unrecognizable?

Anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of Formula 1 knew that was an absolute fairy tale. It was 100% physically impossible.

Therefore, the performance currently playing out before their eyes had to be a meticulously constructed illusion. A grand, elaborate mirage fabricated entirely by Kai, explicitly designed to psychologically manipulate and control Mercedes-Benz.

However, even after successfully piercing the veil and identifying the illusion... how exactly was Mercedes-Benz supposed to respond?

It was precisely this agonizingly ambiguous ”refusing to actively attack” posture that plunged Mercedes-Benz into the most excruciating, frustrating purgatory. Because absolutely no one could definitively prove whether he couldn’t attack, or simply chose not to attack.

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

Time continued to slip away. Yet, an invisible, tightening noose seemed to be slowly, methodically strangling Mercedes-Benz. This feeling was absolutely, undeniably terrible!

...

The Ferrari pit garage was quiet, but it was absolutely not calm. Borreipaire was frantically calculating the evolving pit windows.

If Kai continued to stubbornly maintain his current rhythm, Mercedes-Benz would be absolutely forced to match it. Consequently, the tire degradation curves for both Hamilton and Bottas would continue to aggressively deviate from their optimal projections.

The instant that deviation became too severe, Mercedes-Benz’s strategic options for the third variable phase would be drastically reduced. It might even force the Silver Arrows into taking a massive, desperate gamble, completely shattering their overarching master plan.

This was what it truly meant to firmly grip destiny by the throat. It wasn’t about raw speed; it was entirely about monopolizing the power of choice.

”Kai,” Borreipaire, who had been obsessively monitoring all of Kai’s telemetry indicators, spoke up. ”Excellent work. Absolutely excellent! We just need to stubbornly maintain this exact rhythm.”

Kai didn’t answer immediately. His absolute, undivided attention remained entirely focused on the asphalt. After a brief pause, ”Pierre, monitor Mercedes-Benz’s rhythm closely. The core structure of our plan has already been completely exposed. I absolutely do not believe Mercedes-Benz is just going to sit obediently inside our trap and wait to die. If they actually did that, this race would be incredibly boring.”

”Right?”

Borreipaire instantly caught the teasing, playful irony laced within Kai’s voice. The corners of his mouth couldn’t help but curve upward. ”Well, then I’ll be eagerly anticipating your next spectacular performance, Captain!”

Everything that was currently unfolding... the ultimate objective was never to launch a genuine, on-track attack right this second. The goal was to methodically, step by agonizing step, back Mercedes-Benz into a desperate, inescapable corner. They needed to force them to fully comprehend the severe, potentially catastrophic dilemmas awaiting them in the third variable phase.

Option A: Continue pushing, and pay a massive, devastating price in tire degradation.

Option B: Back off early, and completely surrender the strategic initiative.

It was raw, psychological warfare. Historically, this had always been Mercedes-Benz’s absolute most potent, most frequently utilized weapon. Now, Ferrari was ruthlessly turning the tables. They were actively weaponizing Mercedes-Benz’s favorite tactic and using it to violently suppress them.

Would Mercedes-Benz simply surrender without a fight?

Obviously, the answer was a resounding no.

And that was exactly, precisely the chaotic scenario Kai desperately wanted to manufacture. In truth, Mercedes-Benz still firmly held the ultimate initiative. The raw, terrifying performance of the W10 was still fully capable of asserting total control. If Mercedes-Benz simply chose to play it safe and steady, Ferrari’s actual, tangible opportunities for a successful counter-attack were incredibly limited. Ferrari absolutely had to violently shatter Mercedes-Benz’s established cadence and rhythm.

The entire strategic layout, starting all the way back from the first variable phase... it had all been an elaborate series of smokescreens. The true, underlying essence of the entire operation boiled down to a single, critical keyword—

Pressure.

Once the pressure finally broke their fragile equilibrium, in the rapidly shifting, hyper-chaotic environment of the race, Wolff and Hamilton were bound to expose a fatal flaw. That microscopic opening was Ferrari’s only genuine opportunity.

”...Bono?” Hamilton, having waited and received absolutely no response, finally lost his temper. He was burning with hot-blooded adrenaline, but he still retained a firm grip on his rationality. He knew perfectly well that he couldn’t blindly, recklessly push and incinerate his tires, completely destroying the strategic layout for the third phase. Therefore, he simply keyed his radio to issue a sharp, demanding reminder.

”Lewis, it’s Toto.” The voice finally crackled over the radio, but it wasn’t Bono. ”Push. Begin pushing. Push entirely according to your own rhythm.”

Mercedes-Benz was historically defined by their stable, calculated composure. But absorbing endless, relentless punishment without ever throwing a counter-punch? That was absolutely, definitively not the Mercedes-Benz style. And it was 100%, undeniably not Toto Wolff’s style.

Since Ferrari insisted on being relentlessly, aggressively provocative, Mercedes-Benz would violently seize the initiative and claim total control. Utilizing the W10’s massive performance advantage, they would invert the dynamic and begin actively dictating the rhythm of the entire race. They absolutely refused to repeat the humiliating mistakes of the first phase—passively waiting for Kai to initiate his overcut attempt before frantically scrambling to respond. They were going to preemptively, aggressively seize total control.

Having endured a suffocating, deeply frustrating race thus far, Mercedes-Benz finally, decisively unleashed their true power.

A flash of lethal, predatory intent gleamed in Wolff’s composed eyes. He fully realized that Mercedes-Benz had been led around by the nose, and that their strategic responses had been far too sluggish. But before the situation could slide completely, irreversibly into an inescapable quagmire, they had finally mustered the sheer willpower to violently upend the board. In a single, devastating stroke, they violently shoved all the pressure directly back onto Ferrari—

The impossible dilemma now belonged entirely to Kai.

The second variable phase had only just begun. Was Kai going to match their pace, or not?

If he matched them: Ferrari’s catastrophic long-run race pace would act as a massive anchor. The SF90’s fragile tire degradation curve absolutely, definitively could not withstand the brutal, relentless punishment inflicted by the W10.

If he didn’t match them: Mercedes-Benz would arrogantly ignore him, sprinting wildly forward entirely according to their own dominant rhythm. They would effortlessly build a massive, insurmountable advantage during the second phase, completely, ruthlessly extinguishing any alternate strategic schemes Ferrari might have been plotting for the third phase.

In other words, by boldly asserting their own rhythm and putting their absolute, terrifying strength on full display, Mercedes-Benz rendered all of Ferrari’s petty schemes and elaborate traps completely meaningless. Regardless of how Ferrari chose to respond, it was a guaranteed, un-winnable scenario.

The exact instant Hamilton shifted into push mode and seized total control of the race’s rhythm, Kai and Ferrari were left with absolutely zero viable options.

THIS was the true, terrifying majesty of Mercedes-Benz! It wasn’t passive defense; it was a brutal, proactive, all-out assault!

Wolff stood with his arms crossed tightly over his chest. His spine was perfectly straight. His eyes were locked unblinkingly onto the live broadcast monitors. He radiated an aura of absolute, unquestionable authority from the inside out, effortlessly and completely suppressing all the lingering anxiety and frantic unease within the Mercedes-Benz pit garage.

He wasn’t merely suppressing the panic; he was actively rallying team morale and violently reversing the overall momentum of the race.

However, Wolff had momentarily, briefly overlooked one crucial detail: What about Bottas?

”What’s happening?” Bottas demanded.

He was the very first person to notice Hamilton’s sudden, secondary pace escalation, exactly as he had been the first to notice Kai’s initial pursuit. But fine, Ferrari didn’t notify him. But Mercedes-Benz hadn’t notified him either! What the hell was going on?!

His head was spinning with massive question marks. He completely failed to comprehend the scene unfolding before his eyes. What exactly was happening on the pit wall, and why wasn’t anyone telling him?

”Hold position, Valtteri,” Vowles commanded.

Bottas: ???

A deep, ominous sense of dread gripped his heart tightly. This wasn’t the first or second time this exact scenario had played out. Mercedes-Benz was actively preparing to sacrifice him to ensure Hamilton’s success.

The current situation looked exactly the same. Hamilton was sprinting off into the distance, completely unbothered, while Bottas was being left behind specifically to act as a physical roadblock against Kai.

Bottas was thoroughly, completely sick and tired of this exact dynamic. Had Wolff completely failed to notice his phenomenal form this season?! He was currently the undisputed leader of the Drivers’ World Championship! Furthermore, here at the Shanghai Grand Prix, he was the one who had actually secured Pole Position! And yet, the result was that he was once again being rendered completely invisible?

The optimal strategy was glaringly, blindingly obvious. They should both push. They should completely drop Kai. The best defense is a devastating offense. Did they seriously not understand that basic concept?

Without a microsecond of hesitation, Bottas ignored the order. He immediately matched Hamilton’s acceleration, shifting into push mode and executing his second pace escalation.

Vowles noticed the movement instantly. He let out a weary, helpless sigh.

Under normal circumstances, they would absolutely, forcefully intervene and stop Bottas. Bottas absolutely should not be engaging in a petty, ego-driven battle with Hamilton. Their true, lethal enemy was lurking dangerously right behind them. They might even explicitly order Bottas to sacrifice his own race—adopting a maximum-defense posture to physically choke off Kai’s progress—thereby guaranteeing Hamilton a smooth, unchallenged path to the victory.

But today’s situation was slightly unique. Mercedes-Benz’s overarching strategy wasn’t merely to stall Kai; it was to violently shatter the rhythm and shove the crushing pressure entirely back onto Ferrari. Therefore, it wasn’t just Hamilton who needed to elevate his pace; Bottas needed to do it as well. This was a coordinated, team-wide strategic maneuver designed specifically to force Kai into an agonizing dilemma: match the pace, or surrender.

Whether it was Kai or Leclerc, every single one of Ferrari’s potential, hidden counter-attacks would be violently strangled in their cradles. By executing this move, Mercedes-Benz would successfully seize total, absolute control over the next phase of the race, dictating the layout for the crucial third variable phase.

Bottas—had simply been slightly too impatient.

After rapidly conferring with the strategy group, Vowles finally relayed the official authorization for Bottas to push.

Bottas: Heh. Thanks a lot. I already figured that out myself.

However, the devil is always in the details—

Bottas’s aggressive, almost perfectly synchronized matching of Hamilton’s acceleration had already caught Hamilton’s attention. He instantly went on high alert, shooting a sharp, suspicious glance into his rearview mirror.

Quietly, invisibly, the internal tension between the two Mercedes-Benz cars was rapidly boiling over.

Wolff, maintaining absolute, total oversight of the entire board, hadn’t missed this crucial detail. But he still believed in Hamilton. He simply offered a brief, gentle reminder over the radio: ”Focus entirely on your own rhythm, Lewis.”

And with that, Wolff shifted his attention elsewhere.

Mercedes-Benz had officially launched their counter-offensive. Not just Hamilton, but Bottas was also actively matching the pace escalation. They were ensuring Kai immediately felt the violent shift in momentum. The silver Number 77 car rapidly expanded the gap once again, completely shattering the delicate equilibrium and adopting a terrifying, dominant posture at the front of the pack. Exactly like the leading group in a marathon executing a massive, brutal surge in pace to establish an insurmountable advantage and utterly destroy the trailing competitors, they were violently dropping the rest of the field—

So, what exactly was Kai going to do now?

The poor kid. Caught between a rock and a hard place. Damned if he followed, damned if he didn’t. Now it was finally his turn to taste the agonizing, bitter flavor of an impossible dilemma.

Borreipaire deliberately shot a quick, highly specific glance toward the Mercedes-Benz pit wall. For a brief, fleeting moment, he genuinely hadn’t anticipated Wolff’s brutal, ruthless decisiveness.

He rapidly averted his gaze—

Right before he burst out laughing.

When he looked up, he saw Binotto’s eyes crinkling with a massive, suppressed smile. Borreipaire offered a helpless, apologetic shrug. ”I told you I was terrible at acting.”

Over the radio, Kai’s bright, joyous laughter crackled through. ”Haha! Next time, we should definitely have Mattia do it. He can just stare at them with those big, innocent, Bambi-like eyes. It’s a real shame I didn’t get to witness Pierre’s grand acting debut in person.”

Borreipaire: ...

Binotto: ...

It wasn’t until that exact moment that Borreipaire finally remembered there was another person listening in on the channel. He coughed awkwardly. ”Kai, Mercedes-Benz has initiated their push.”

”I know,” Kai replied. Joking aside, when it came to the actual business of racing, Kai never lost his absolute focus. ”Please provide continuous, real-time updates on Hamilton’s rhythm. We absolutely cannot afford to fall too far behind.”

He paused for a beat. ”Pierre, I was only joking about the acting thing. I seriously doubt anyone on the Mercedes-Benz pit wall was actually paying attention to those tiny, microscopic details. I never expected you to be so incredibly cooperative. So, you really do have a secret passion for Hollywood, don’t you?”

Borreipaire: ...

Binotto lowered his head slightly, using every ounce of his willpower to suppress a massive fit of laughter.

Everything was proceeding exactly, flawlessly according to plan.

During the first variable phase, Kai’s two proactive pace escalations, combined with Leclerc’s single, ferociously powerful assault, served a dual purpose. On one hand, it undeniably provided Leclerc with a genuine, highly viable opportunity to execute an undercut. But on the other hand, its true, insidious purpose was to violently shatter Mercedes-Benz’s carefully managed rhythm, inflicting severe, accelerated degradation upon their tires.

Now, in the second variable phase, Ferrari needed to further scramble Mercedes-Benz’s rhythm and strategic layout. They needed to actively force them into an early, sub-optimal pit stop, thereby completely destroying their meticulously planned layout for the third phase. However, simultaneously, Kai and Leclerc absolutely had to prioritize protecting their own tires, ensuring they didn’t suffer a catastrophic collapse that would render their efforts in the third phase completely useless. Therefore, they couldn’t afford to apply the pressure too aggressively. For Mercedes-Benz to suddenly, voluntarily elevate their own pace... it was simply too perfect. It couldn’t have been more flawless.

If Mercedes-Benz had chosen not to elevate their pace, then Kai would have been forced to continue taking massive risks to actively apply the pressure himself.

Of course, Mercedes-Benz transitioning from a passive defense to a proactive, aggressive offense—actively stepping up to dictate the rhythm—was absolutely not an act of blind, foolish recklessness. They possessed the immense confidence and foundational strength to justify the maneuver. If Ferrari lacked a brilliant counter-strategy, Mercedes-Benz absolutely possessed the raw, overwhelming power to instantly extinguish all suspense and seize total, unbreakable control of the race.

Therefore, Kai had explicitly instructed Borreipaire to meticulously monitor Hamilton’s single-lap rhythm—

The ultimate target wasn’t Bottas. It was Hamilton.

So, match the pace, or surrender?

If the disparity in their single-lap pace remained within 0.4 or 0.5 seconds, he wouldn’t match it. But if the gap exceeded that highly specific operational window, Kai would be forced to adapt on the fly. He would have to bite the bullet and stick with his opponent, doing absolutely everything in his power to prevent the gap from stretching into an insurmountable chasm.

What happened next was going to be the absolute, definitive crucible that determined the ultimate victor of the entire race!

Brundle watched with intense, laser-focused scrutiny. Although he hadn’t immediately deciphered the incredibly complex, multi-layered strategic warfare playing out between Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari, after taking some time to analyze the unfolding data, the true narrative was slowly beginning to reveal itself.

Lap 29. The dynamic shifted violently.

At the front of the pack, Mercedes-Benz was pushing with absolutely everything they had. In a stark departure from their usual operating procedure, they had stepped up aggressively during the second variable phase to establish a terrifying, dominant lead. In a single, explosive surge, they violently tore the field apart.

Further back, Kai—the man who had utterly monopolized the race’s metronome during the first phase—appeared remarkably, almost unnervingly stable. His single-lap pace remained firmly anchored around the 1:37 mark. It was as if he were an entirely different driver.

Regardless of how aggressively Hamilton and Bottas pushed, Kai stubbornly maintained his own specific rhythm. He never wavered. The fastest lap records were continuously snatched back by Mercedes-Benz, with Hamilton and Bottas repeatedly trading purple sectors. Displaying unparalleled, terrifying dominance, they were aggressively dragging the Shanghai Grand Prix entirely under their absolute control—

The suspense regarding the ultimate victor appeared to have been prematurely, violently extinguished. For Kai, forget about chasing down Hamilton; even catching Bottas looked like an impossible, agonizingly difficult task.

In short, Ferrari entirely refused to be dragged into Mercedes-Benz’s rhythm. They stuck rigidly to their own predetermined plan. Their approach to the second variable phase appeared suddenly, confusingly conservative.

However, was that actually the reality of the situation? Had Ferrari genuinely exhausted all their momentum after a single, aggressive phase, leaving them completely impotent? Had Kai and Leclerc, acting with the foolish, hot-headed bravado of youth, recklessly burned through all their energy in a single stint, forcing them to wave the white flag? Had Mercedes-Benz truly crushed Ferrari with a single, overwhelming surge of raw power, definitively proving the W10’s terrifying supremacy?

Clearly, that was absolutely not the case.

Brundle noticed a crucial, incredibly subtle detail. Although Mercedes-Benz firmly held the initiative, aggressively dictating the overall race rhythm, the actual time gap between Hamilton and Kai simply refused to expand significantly.

Factor One: Bottas.

Bottas remained glued to Hamilton’s gearbox like a starving predator. The gap between the two men constantly hovered just slightly above one second, never quite stretching to two seconds. The exact instant Hamilton suffered even a microscopic lapse in concentration, Bottas would effortlessly slip into DRS range and launch a devastating attack. The internal competitive tension within Mercedes-Benz was continuously, dangerously escalating.

Therefore, because Hamilton and Bottas were constantly checking each other, constantly locked in a vicious internal proxy war, neither of them was truly, fully unleashed.

Factor Two: The Backmarkers.

As the 56-lap race crossed the halfway mark, the field had stretched out massively. The leading pack systematically began the grueling process of lapping the slower cars.

The performance gap between Mercedes-Benz and the midfield/lower-tier teams was already astronomically large. During Qualifying, their single-lap pace effortlessly exceeded Renault and Haas by over a full second. Now, during the Race, as Mercedes-Benz shifted into push mode, that terrifying performance gap was further, violently amplified. Consequently, they encountered the backmarker traffic significantly earlier than anticipated.

The critical issue was that these backmarkers were intensely focused on their own respective races. For a brief, agonizing period, they were entirely oblivious to the high-stakes, long-distance proxy war currently raging between Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari—

And even if they were aware, they had their own desperately important battles to fight, and their own points to prove. Unless a perfectly safe, convenient opportunity presented itself, they were absolutely unwilling to sacrifice their own optimal racing lines.

Taking the absolute brunt of the frustration were the chronically disastrous Williams cars. Both Russell and Kubica were practically overflowing with bitter resentment. Even though Mercedes-Benz was their official engine supplier, it was absolutely no exaggeration to say that their humiliating, pathetic status this season—perpetually languishing dead last, looking as though they were participating in an entirely different, vastly inferior racing category—was almost entirely Mercedes-Benz’s fault.

Following closely behind them were Alfa Romeo’s Giovinazzi, and the McLaren duo of Norris and Sainz. Every single one of them harbored desperate, burning ambitions to prove their worth. Even if breaking into the points was an impossible fantasy, fighting tooth and nail to get as close to the points as humanly possible remained their absolute priority. Securing a seemingly meaningless positional advantage was still intensely valuable to them. More importantly, fierce internal competition raged within their own teams. Absolutely no one wanted to lose to their teammate. Finishing dead last didn’t matter, as long as you managed to beat the guy driving the identical car next to you.

These backmarkers didn’t even need to actively, maliciously block the leaders. All they had to do was exhibit a slight lack of proactive enthusiasm when yielding the racing line, occasionally forcing the leaders to wait until the absolute final moment before the blue flags were officially deployed.

Details. One tiny, seemingly insignificant detail stacked upon another. Carrying over the lingering, unresolved tensions from the first phase, these microscopic, irritating stumbles and stutters continuously interfered with the race leaders, eventually mutating into a heavy, suffocating knot of profound frustration in their chests.

The fierce, burning fighting spirit that had erupted from the very depths of Hamilton’s soul was constantly, relentlessly encountering frustrating obstacles. He simply couldn’t establish a smooth, unbroken rhythm to fully unleash his momentum. The sensation was absolutely, unimaginably terrible.

Mercedes-Benz’s grand plan to violently elevate their pace and completely, definitively drop Kai was absolutely not proceeding as smoothly as they had envisioned.

On the surface, the gap between Hamilton and Kai had expanded to 5.7 seconds. Kai, who had once been hovering dangerously close to the very edge of Bottas’s DRS window, had now been forcefully shoved back to a 3.8-second deficit. Bottas finally, thankfully, couldn’t see that terrifying, un-killable flash of Ferrari red in his rearview mirrors anymore.

Everything appeared to be perfectly, entirely under Mercedes-Benz’s absolute control.

However, from Brundle’s highly experienced perspective, the usually steady, seasoned, and elite Mercedes-Benz organization was acting noticeably impatient and erratic during this second variable phase. The harder they desperately tried to prove their overwhelming dominance, the less time they spent meticulously refining the crucial micro-details. Whether it was overarching strategy or ground-level execution, everything appeared surprisingly rough and unpolished. Conversely, Ferrari—a team historically defined by their tendency to panic and self-destruct—was currently projecting an aura of seasoned maturity and rock-solid stability. They absolutely refused to be dragged into their opponent’s frantic rhythm, methodically, logically executing their plan for the second phase.

The violent, swirling undercurrents raging beneath the seemingly calm surface of the race were practically impossible to decipher in the heat of the moment. Even an elite, outside observer couldn’t accurately grasp the exact trajectory of the teams’ dueling strategies.

However, Brundle maintained his absolute faith in Kai. The seemingly identical, yet profoundly, subtly different strategies deployed across the first and second variable phases undeniably showcased the brilliant, untouchable aura of a true master at work.

So, in this massive, high-stakes strategic war between Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari, who was ultimately going to seize the upper hand?

And then, on Lap 37, a massive, unpredictable variable violently erupted—

Mercedes-Benz dove into the pits!

And it wasn’t just Hamilton! Bottas followed closely behind him! A simultaneous, double-stack pit stop!

GASP! A massive wave of shock ripped through the crowd!

Mercedes-Benz?! It was actually Mercedes-Benz?! What the hell was happening?! What did they miss?!

Who was going to be the very first driver to pit during the second variable phase, violently shattering the equilibrium and dictating the tactical layout for the crucial third phase?

The entire venue was completely captivated, intensely curious.

Statistically speaking, Leclerc was the most obvious, logical candidate. After all, Leclerc was the very first driver among the ’Big Three’ to pit during the first phase, aggressively breaking the initial deadlock.

According to Pirelli’s official recommendations, the Hard tires were theoretically capable of surviving for roughly thirty laps. However, today’s actual track temperatures had plummeted significantly below all pre-race projections. The ambient air temperature at the Shanghai circuit was a cool 20 degrees Celsius, and the track surface temperature was only 27 degrees. Under these unusually cold conditions, the degradation rate of the Hard tires was massively, aggressively accelerated. This was especially true for the front tires, which were suffering catastrophic wear.

Listening closely to the radio communications across the grid, it was glaringly obvious that every single team was frantically revising their pre-race projections. The operational lifespan of this specific set of White Hard tires was highly likely going to fall significantly short of twenty-five laps. Depending heavily on specific chassis performance and individual driving styles, that lifespan might need to be revised even further downward, completely, violently scrambling every single team’s master plan.

For Ferrari, the situation was particularly dire. After all, catastrophic tire degradation had been their absolute most fatal flaw in both Melbourne and Bahrain.

Synthesizing all these highly volatile variables, it was highly probable that Leclerc would be the first to pit, likely around Lap 40 or 41. It was even entirely possible he would be forced to dive in even earlier.

Naturally, the absolute focus shifted squarely onto Verstappen, who was trailing closely behind him.

If Red Bull decided to take a massive gamble, they could pit before Leclerc. Verstappen could bolt on a fresh set of Medium tires and attempt a highly aggressive undercut. This maneuver absolutely possessed a high probability of success.

In other words, the critical timing for the second round of pit stops was highly likely going to be an exclusive, brutal battle entirely between Ferrari and Red Bull.

Yet, the final, shocking reality was that Mercedes-Benz was the one to violently break cover.

But... WHY?!

Why on earth was Mercedes-Benz joining this chaotic fray?!

Not only were they the very first to pit, but they had violently yanked the pit window forward to Lap 37! The second variable phase had only lasted a measly nineteen laps! The operational lifespan of the supposedly durable Hard tires was practically identical to the fragile Soft tires!

Furthermore, Hamilton and Bottas executed a highly dangerous, simultaneous double-stack pit stop! They were willingly exposing themselves to the massive, terrifying risk of the pit crew making a catastrophic error under extreme pressure! They were willingly exposing themselves to the terrifying risk of leaving Kai out on the track, completely alone, to assume the undisputed lead of the race!

Most critically of all, Mercedes-Benz was currently leading the race! They held absolute, tyrannical control over the rhythm! They had established a massive, comfortable advantage! They possessed the ultimate luxury of simply sitting back and observing. Even if their pace dropped slightly, Hamilton and Bottas could easily remain out on the asphalt, dynamically adjusting their strategy based entirely on when their opponents eventually decided to pit, executing flawless, real-time reactions.

Taking a step back, even if Mercedes-Benz was determined to proactively seize the initiative and launch the first strike, absolutely refusing to be dragged into Ferrari and Red Bull’s chaotic rhythm... they could easily have split their strategies. One driver could remain out on the track to maintain the lead, while the other pitted early to shatter the equilibrium. Why on earth did they choose to pit both cars on the exact same lap?!

—It was completely, utterly incomprehensible.

A hundred thousand massive question marks, like heavy cluster bombs, were violently dropped squarely onto the paddock.

The live broadcast cameras instantly locked onto Wolff. Calm, steady, intensely focused, and completely expressionless. It was glaringly obvious: he was absolutely, profoundly satisfied with the situation.

Behind every single monumental decision lies a complex mixture of serendipitous coincidence, flowing naturally with the momentum of the moment, and most importantly, brutal, proactive aggression.

The tire degradation was undeniably, catastrophically exceeding all projections. The severe weather and track conditions had caused the Hard tires to degrade at a rate significantly faster than the Soft tires. It had completely caught every single team entirely off guard. Mercedes-Benz was naturally no exception.

Simultaneously, after violently shattering the rhythm during the second variable phase, Mercedes-Benz had proactively, aggressively elevated their pace. Unfortunately, this aggressive push coincided perfectly with encountering a massive, continuous cluster of backmarkers. They were violently sucked into a relentless series of turbulent aerodynamic wakes. Consequently, their current level of tire degradation was highly likely significantly worse than both Ferrari and Red Bull’s. Even though the W10’s phenomenal performance inherently possessed massive adaptability and tolerance, the glaring, fatal problems staring them in the face absolutely could not be ignored.

In other words, remaining out on the track wasn’t just a minor issue where Kai might slowly close the gap. The true, terrifying problem was that Mercedes-Benz’s catastrophic vulnerabilities would be completely, nakedly exposed to their rivals.

Rather than agonizing in a state of paralyzing indecision, lingering out on the asphalt and wasting time trying to squeeze out two or three more agonizingly slow laps—which would provide absolutely zero benefit in establishing a terrifying advantage to intimidate their rivals—it was infinitely better to pit immediately. Swap to the Yellow Medium tires. Test exactly how the Medium compound performed under these uniquely cold atmospheric conditions. Could they continue their aggressive, flat-out push?

If they could, they would continue pushing relentlessly. If they couldn’t, they would simply adopt a slightly more conservative posture and nurse the tires all the way to the checkered flag—

Ultimately, the victory was absolutely, undeniably guaranteed to belong to them!

Mercedes-Benz urgently needed to firmly, ruthlessly grasp both the absolute initiative and the dominant momentum in their own hands. Utilizing a completely unexpected, highly unorthodox maneuver from the race lead was the perfect way to violently shatter the entire strategic layout of the grid.

As for the highly risky double-stack pit stop... that was entirely because of Bottas.

He wasn’t just lurking hungrily; he was radiating an aura of unstoppable momentum. Whether Hamilton stayed out and Bottas pitted, or Hamilton pitted and Bottas stayed out... there was absolutely zero doubt that Bottas would throw everything he had into attempting a desperate, do-or-die undercut/overcut against Hamilton. Mercedes-Benz would completely lose control of the situation.

The exact instant Bottas unleashed his full power, it was entirely predictable that Hamilton would absolutely refuse to meekly surrender his position without a brutal fight. Immediately following that, the internal contradictions within Mercedes-Benz would spiral completely, violently out of control.

Caught between a rock and a hard place. Trapped in an impossible dilemma.

Wolff absolutely, definitively did not want to see a repeat of Ferrari’s catastrophic disaster from Interlagos last season play out within the Mercedes-Benz garage.

The absolute best, most highly efficient method for maintaining total control over the situation was—

A simultaneous, double-stack pit stop.

By executing this specific maneuver, he violently snuffed out every single alternate possibility. He guaranteed that Hamilton would continue to undisputed lead the Shanghai Grand Prix. Simultaneously, the pit wall could utilize the radio to soothe and control Bottas, doing everything in their power to keep the restless, churning internal conflicts firmly within manageable parameters. This was the exact, fundamental reason why Wolff had ultimately chosen to retain Bottas over promoting Russell.

In this specific, highly volatile scenario, Bottas remained a controllable variable. If pushed to the absolute breaking point, Wolff was highly confident Bottas would ultimately fall in line and obey orders.

Myriad reasons, a massive collision of highly complex circumstances. It was only after weighing all of these factors that Wolff arrived at this monumental decision. Since Mercedes-Benz had already definitively decided to forcefully seize control of the race, they absolutely had to project an aura of unstoppable, tyrannical momentum all the way to the bitter end. They had to violently shatter the deadlock, shatter the shackles, overturn all established rules, and utilize a majestic, mountain-devouring posture to completely and utterly destroy the established order of the entire paddock.

Exactly like what was happening right now.

Everything was proceeding flawlessly, perfectly aligning with his ultimate vision. The entire paddock was thrown into absolute, world-spinning chaos. Like a single massive boulder dropped into a tranquil lake, triggering a thousand violent ripples, every single team was immediately forced to react. Swept up in the massive storm generated by Mercedes-Benz’s entirely unexpected maneuver, with the sole exception of the utterly powerless Williams team, every other garage erupted into frantic, panicked activity.

Ferrari and Red Bull were unquestionably the very first to bear the absolute brunt of the impact.

Red Bull moved instantly. Horner, who absolutely adored playing clever little tactical games, was a master at exploiting the tiniest loopholes. Red Bull had already been intensely debating their optimal pit window anyway; the severe degradation of the Hard tires had undeniably far exceeded their projections. Now, seeing Mercedes-Benz violently shatter the equilibrium, he didn’t hesitate for a single microsecond. Verstappen was ordered into the pits on the very next lap.

Ferrari... collectively face-palmed.

In truth, Ferrari’s second variable phase had been executed absolutely brilliantly. This was largely because they possessed Kai—the definitive home-town hero.

Kai intimately understood Shanghai’s weather. April in the Magic City was characterized by sudden, unpredictable shifts between warm bursts and lingering chills. When the weather was good, it was spectacular—cloudless skies, brilliant spring sunshine, absolutely perfect conditions. But if it was cloudy, the afternoon was highly likely to bring strong, sustained winds and a significant, rapid drop in temperature. This was especially true out in the suburbs where the Shanghai International Circuit was located.

Based on the crucial telemetry gathered during Free Practice, the severe degradation of the Hard tires under cold, highly windy conditions was a genuine, terrifying concern. Furthermore, the SF90 lacked the luxurious flexibility to be capricious.

Therefore, from the exact moment they committed to running the White Hard tires for the second variable phase, Kai and Leclerc had already finalized their strategy. They would do absolutely everything in their power to maintain the utmost stability in their single-lap rhythm. They desperately hoped to utilize the second phase to significantly shorten the performance gap between the SF90 and the W10, aiming to accumulate a crucial, tangible advantage.

But now, Mercedes-Benz had displayed an attitude of absolute, tyrannical dominance. Red Bull, sensing an opportunity, immediately struck like a snake following a stick. This completely, violently shattered Ferrari’s meticulously crafted strategic deployment.

If Leclerc didn’t immediately respond by pitting, Verstappen, who was currently bolting on fresh Medium tires, absolutely would not miss the golden opportunity. He would undoubtedly throw everything he had into attempting a massive undercut. Considering Ferrari’s disastrously poor mechanical grip on cold tires, Leclerc absolutely had to respond immediately to avoid losing his track position.b

After a brief, frantic consultation in the pit garage, Leclerc followed suit, diving into the pits on Lap 39. He successfully withstood Verstappen’s aggressive assault, exiting the pit lane just ahead of the Red Bull, desperately clinging to his fourth-place position. However, his strategy for the third variable phase had been completely, violently derailed. It was highly likely Leclerc would be entirely unable to join forces with Kai to launch a coordinated assault on the podium.

So, what about Kai?
