F1: The Speed Legend

After the brief moment of shock and stunned disbelief passed, rationality slowly returned. Latching onto a single, critical thread, the truth hidden behind the chaotic impact began to reveal its true face.

The exact moment Brundle mentioned Leclerc’s name, Croft also figured it out. He immediately demanded a replay, desperately searching for the crucial details they had completely overlooked in the heat of the moment.

In reality, when Kai executed his very first pace escalation, Leclerc had quietly, seamlessly matched him. But at the time, because the two Red Bulls driven by Verstappen and Albon had also accelerated in response, nobody gave it a second thought. They simply assumed Leclerc was being forced to push because he was under attack from behind.

However, while Kai was completely monopolizing the entire venue’s attention, Leclerc had continuously, flawlessly mirrored his teammate’s rhythm, never allowing the gap to grow. Furthermore, when Kai initiated his second pace escalation, Leclerc responded instantly. In fact, he pushed even harder, quietly closing the gap.

Crucially, Leclerc didn’t set any purple sectors. He simply advanced covertly under the cover of the massive, noisy smokescreen generated by Kai’s continuous, headline-grabbing pace.

By the time Mercedes-Benz finally realized they needed to push, Leclerc had already beaten them to the punch. It only took him a single lap to successfully breach Kai’s DRS window.

And then, exiting Turn 4, utilizing the transition between the short straight, the high-speed Turn 5, and the subsequent straight, Kai—doing absolutely everything in his power to minimize his own speed loss and maintain his rhythm—actively yielded the racing line. The two Ferraris executed a flawless, seamless position swap. Even Verstappen, trailing closely behind, was utterly dumbfounded—

No warning, no apparent reason, completely out of the blue. Was that even legal?!

The broadcast booth was equally bewildered. Croft and Brundle only had time to register the end result. Lacking the necessary context and buildup, they were plunged into a state of shocked confusion.

It was entirely premeditated!

In a flash of lightning, amidst his chaotic, wildly swirling thoughts, Brundle grasped the inspiration. The breath caught sharply in his throat.

”Leclerc is preparing to push!”

This was—Tactical Coordination!

An unbelievably rare, practically mythical display of internal team coordination from Ferrari. It was the very first time they had truly unsheathed this weapon at the Shanghai circuit.

To be completely accurate, this level of seamless coordination was incredibly rare across the entire paddock. In a sport defined by fierce, uncompromising individual heroism, witnessing two drivers voluntarily join forces for the greater good of the team was harder than ascending to heaven. Unless explicit threats, intense pressure, and overt manipulation were heavily applied by team management, it was a scenario that practically never occurred naturally.

YET! RIGHT NOW!

Ferrari’s young, genius Twin Stars were orchestrating this exact, phenomenal feat for the very first time! Was this an evolved, next-generation iteration of ”Senna and Prost”?!

Everything transpired in the blink of an eye. Although it requires a lengthy explanation, the actual events on the track unfolded in mere seconds. By the time Brundle finally processed that the entire sequence was a meticulously orchestrated Ferrari master plan, Wolff had simultaneously realized that he had just stepped headfirst into a massive, humiliating trap.

Kai—It was all Kai’s fault!

Last season, they suffered agonizingly because they fatally underestimated him. This season, they were trapped in a desperate quagmire precisely because they were hyper-focused on him.

When Mercedes-Benz’s attention was entirely, utterly consumed by Kai, both Wolff and Vowles firmly believed his objective was to shatter their rhythm and force them to consume their tires. But Mercedes-Benz wasn’t afraid of that in the slightest. In a brutal, head-to-head war of attrition, Mercedes-Benz was absolutely confident they wouldn’t be the ones to break first.

If Kai wanted to escalate the pace and burn rubber, Mercedes-Benz was more than willing to play that game to the bitter end.

But they never, in their wildest nightmares, anticipated that when the smokescreen finally cleared, the true monster lurking behind Kai would bare its fangs—Leclerc.

Maximum Push Mode!

”Sector 2! Leclerc! Purple!”

The ominous premonition instantly materialized into reality. Immediately after swapping positions with Kai, Leclerc didn’t hesitate for a microsecond. He violently accelerated his pace.

Wolff: ...

At this specific moment, he couldn’t even summon the energy to curse. Anxiety, profound regret, and boiling anger violently intertwined. But ultimately, all those chaotic emotions coalesced into the icy, calculating rationality of a true titan.

Regardless of what had already happened, the reality was staring them in the face. Rather than indulging in useless, impotent rage, it was vastly more productive to plant his feet firmly on the ground, respond with icy composure, and actively suffocate Ferrari’s overarching strategy and insidious plots.

Right now, Mercedes-Benz had undeniably lost the strategic initiative. But they hadn’t lost their track positions. They were still running 1-2. The situation had absolutely not deteriorated to the absolute worst-case scenario.

If they wanted to reverse the momentum, two things needed to happen simultaneously. First, Hamilton and Bottas absolutely had to withstand the brutal assault out on the asphalt. Otherwise, all the strategic maneuvering in the world would be completely useless. Second, the strategy team needed to rapidly analyze the incoming telemetry, accurately diagnose both their own and their competitors’ true status, and ruthlessly seize the initiative during the second variable phase.

However, executing that was not going to be easy—

Leclerc was charging with absolutely terrifying momentum.

1:37.888.

1:37.731.

Faster and faster with every passing lap. Not only was he the very first driver in the entire race to break into the 1:37s, but he continued to shatter the fastest lap record, closing in on Bottas with aggressive, predatory intent.

Leclerc was absolutely, 100% laser-focused. He was pouring 120% of his energy into this stint. Not just because he needed to repay Kai’s profound trust—whether it was the seamless tactical coordination or Kai sharing all his Qualifying telemetry to ensure Leclerc found the optimal racing lines for the Race. But also because this was his very first time standing squarely in the blazing spotlight this new season.

This was his moment.

Last season at Sauber, he had been so agonizingly close to the podium, yet so incredibly far away, ultimately falling short. Back then, he could legitimately claim that his car’s lack of performance was the anchor dragging him down. But he couldn’t use that excuse forever. Now was the time to fully cash in on his immense talent and justify the towering expectations placed upon him.

Succeed, or die trying. If he couldn’t grasp this golden opportunity, if he ended up being eliminated and forgotten, he would have absolutely no right to complain or blame the heavens. Perhaps he simply wasn’t cut out for this brutal path.

Leclerc, who had marched step by agonizing step to reach this exact position, violently ignited his inner cosmos. He unleashed an unbelievable, explosive burst of raw energy. Like a razor-sharp dagger, he plunged violently straight into Bottas’s DRS window.

Bottas: ???

The pressure stacked layer upon heavy layer, crashing down like a relentless avalanche.

Bottas had obviously noticed the flash of Ferrari red in his mirrors. But he never expected the Number 16 to be even more violently unhinged than the Number 22. Even though Bottas had already significantly elevated his own pace, in a mere two laps, Leclerc had completely bridged the gap, breaching his DRS zone. Furthermore, there was no hesitation, no patient buildup. Leclerc immediately launched an all-out assault.

Youngsters are always like this. Hot-blooded, impulsive, absolutely desperate to prove themselves. It was time for a seasoned, experienced veteran to teach the little chick a brutal lesson—

”Slipstream! Pulls out! DRS open!”

”Extreme late braking!”

”Charles Leclerc flawlessly executes Ferrari’s massive engine advantage down the straight! He successfully overtakes Bottas into Turn 14 and moves up into second place!”

Bottas froze.

The entire Mercedes-Benz pit wall froze.

It happened just like that. Bottas was utterly powerless to mount a defense. Before he could even draw a breath, the red and silver cars had already swapped positions—

Mercedes-Benz hadn’t even had enough time to formulate a new counter-strategy before their rhythm was violently shattered once again.

But the truly terrifying part was yet to come. After overtaking Bottas, Leclerc wasn’t satisfied. The Number 16 Ferrari seemed to literally burst into flames as he threw absolutely everything he had into hunting down Hamilton.

”Lewis, Leclerc’s last lap was a 37.333,” Bono immediately relayed the critical intel.

Hamilton instantly understood the implication. Leclerc was still accelerating. ”Is Ferrari preparing to box?”

Between elite professionals, communication is always incredibly concise and rapid.

”Currently, no,” Bono answered immediately. This meant Leclerc was preparing to relentlessly harass Hamilton for the foreseeable future, potentially even launching a genuine attack. ”Based on the current telemetry, the driver attempting the three-stop strategy isn’t Kai. It’s Leclerc. Kai was merely the smokescreen.”

Hamilton: ... ”Mhm. They really brought a lot of cheap tricks today.”

Bono didn’t respond, because he knew Hamilton already understood exactly what he had to do—

Keep pushing. Defend the position.

Today’s race seemed permanently stuck in this exact, frustrating loop. Mercedes-Benz would attempt to anticipate Ferrari’s strategy, but Ferrari was always one step ahead, constantly shifting their formation.

Step by agonizing step.

It was profoundly, deeply irritating.

Leclerc had already bypassed Bottas. Hamilton absolutely could not afford to surrender his position as well. Until they fully comprehended the entirety of Ferrari’s grand design, or until Mercedes-Benz could launch a proactive, devastating counter-attack to definitively reverse the momentum, they absolutely could not allow themselves to panic or break formation. Otherwise, the remainder of the race would become unimaginably difficult.

Based on everything they were seeing, Leclerc was almost certainly executing a three-stop, or perhaps even a four-stop strategy. BUT—

Thinking it through carefully, Wolff suddenly realized a massive, glaring blind spot.

The SF90.

They genuinely believed they possessed a deep, comprehensive understanding of Ferrari’s car. They thought they had their opponent completely figured out. But the brutal reality was that after Melbourne, Maranello had instituted an absolute, total lockdown on all information. Everything Mercedes-Benz thought they knew was only what Ferrari had actively allowed them to know. So, did they truly understand this car at all?

Was Leclerc actually preparing for a three-stop strategy?

What was the true purpose behind Kai’s two prior, aggressive pace escalations?

Perhaps Ferrari’s long-run tire degradation was genuinely catastrophic, but their short-burst, sprint capability was an undeniable, lethal threat. Right now, Leclerc was charging forward. But what exactly was Kai brewing in the background? Had Ferrari actually discovered a setup compromise that temporarily mitigated their long-run tire consumption issues?

During the launch phase, were the aggressive assaults by Kai and Leclerc carefully orchestrated, pre-planned actions, or brilliant, on-the-fly improvisations? And regarding all these subsequent maneuvers... were they part of a pre-race master plan, or were they improvising based on the evolving track conditions?

A single unexpected variable. A tiny sliver of confusion. The seeds of doubt took root and sprouted, rapidly spreading with the unstoppable momentum of a wildfire. A million different possibilities violently erupted in his brain. Wolff stared blankly at the live broadcast monitor. On the surface, he appeared perfectly calm and in absolute control. But his hyper-accelerated brain was currently emitting a high-pitched, strained hum.

And then—

”Movement in the Ferrari pit box.”

Startled, Wolff’s thoughts were violently yanked back to reality. Once again, it was Ferrari.

Wait?

...A smokescreen?!

The possibility instantly flashed through Wolff’s mind. After all, Kai had done it once, and now Leclerc was doing it. Ferrari had launched two consecutive, devastating strikes that completely scrambled the board. It wasn’t just Mercedes-Benz; Red Bull had to be practically jumping at shadows right now. The slightest movement would trigger a massive, paranoid reflex.

If Mercedes-Benz and Red Bull fell for the bait and pitted prematurely, and Ferrari stayed out on the track—

The Monza Trick!

So, after running around in a massive, convoluted circle, deploying all these elaborate setups and flashy parlor tricks, their ultimate goal was still just trying to trick Mercedes-Benz with the exact same dummy pit stop maneuver from Monza?!

Forget about Red Bull for a second. Verstappen, trailing behind, could easily react based on what Leclerc and Kai did. He could advance or retreat as needed. But Hamilton and Bottas were in an entirely different, vastly more precarious position. They were the ones being forced to make the critical decision.

Especially since they had been led around by the nose this entire race. If they wanted to finally break the deadlock and reverse the momentum, they had to act now.

In the span of a single heartbeat, countless conflicting thoughts swarmed Wolff’s mind. Should they continue to tightly mark Kai, or shift their primary focus to Leclerc? How exactly should they adjust Hamilton and Bottas’s strategies?

”Leclerc boxes.”

”Verstappen boxes.”

Croft’s impassioned, roaring commentary exploded from the live broadcast. Wolff snapped his head up. In the span of a single breath, a Ferrari squeezed into his field of vision on the monitors.

Instantly, breathing ceased—

So, was this still the Monza Trick? Hamilton didn’t pit, so Leclerc pitted instead? And unbelievably, Verstappen had followed him in to add to the chaos?!

”Toto. Undercut,” Vowles’ voice cut sharply through the radio.

Wolff shivered violently.

Shit! He had been completely, thoroughly dragged into their web. Ferrari’s strategies today were relentless, wave after unpredictable wave. Impossible to anticipate, impossible to control. They were continuously, violently scrambling the board. It had made him so profoundly paranoid that he was jumping at shadows, over-analyzing every single microscopic movement, searching for complex conspiracies where there were none. In doing so, he had completely forgotten the most fundamental, most basic strategic maneuver in the book.

The Undercut.

Regardless of whether Leclerc was on a three-stop or a four-stop strategy, the undeniable reality was that Leclerc’s aggressive, flat-out push had severely threatened Hamilton’s position. If Mercedes-Benz didn’t immediately respond, they were going to lose the lead!

BUT! Lurking right behind them was a hungry, predatory Kai!

Another absolute nightmare!

Leclerc’s undercut attempt, and Kai’s impending overcut attempt. How exactly was Mercedes-Benz supposed to counter both simultaneously?

In a flash, he was transported back to the season opener at Albert Park last year. Back then, Mercedes-Benz had completely, arrogantly ignored Kai. All their focus was entirely locked onto Vettel. The result? Kai seized the opportunity, snatching the victory right out of their jaws and launching a legendary, championship-winning season.

And what about right now?

Should they continue to hyper-focus on the Number One driver and completely ignore the Number Two driver?

”No!” Amidst the absolute chaos and agonizing deadlock, Wolff grasped the critical thread—

Based on the first variable testing phase today, Kai had perfectly manipulated Mercedes-Benz’s psychology. Because of the massive, crushing pressure Kai exerted, they had completely, fatally ignored Leclerc’s presence. And now, Leclerc had deliberately triggered a massive tsunami to violently draw their attention. Kai was absolutely banking on the assumption that Mercedes-Benz wouldn’t care about Leclerc and would continue to obsessively mark Kai. Therefore, Leclerc was the true, immediate, lethal threat!

Buzz— Buzz-buzz-buzz—

His stomach churned, the world spun wildly.

Instantly locking onto the crucial detail, Wolff rapidly questioned Vowles regarding their current tire status.

Obviously, after having their rhythm violently shattered on three separate occasions, the tire condition for both Hamilton and Bottas was deteriorating rapidly. Pirelli’s official recommendation stated the pit window for the Red Softs was around Lap 20. Based on their current degradation levels, the W10 could theoretically endure for a little longer, but definitely not much longer.

A massive torrent of information flooded his brain. He stared unblinkingly at the live broadcast monitors. Currently, the cameras were entirely focused on Leclerc, Hamilton, and the others. Kai’s Number 22 car had quietly, almost invisibly vanished from the screen. The critical variable was this: if the W10’s tires were already approaching their absolute critical limit, the SF90’s tires couldn’t possibly be in much better shape.

Wolff straightened his spine. A flash of absolute, unyielding resolve hardened in his eyes. He issued the command. The Mercedes-Benz pit wall instantly sprang into hyper-efficient action.

”Lewis, box. Box, box.”

”Valtteri, push! Maximum push! Attempt the overcut!”

A two-pronged assault. Dictating their own destiny.

Amidst the rapidly mutating, intensely thrilling chaos, Mercedes-Benz once again demonstrated their tyrannical dominance. Wolff, acting like an unshakeable anchor, instantly stabilized the entire situation.

And thus, the entire Shanghai circuit bore witness to the absolute tightest, most spectacular strategic battle of the race—

Lap 17. Leclerc and Verstappen pit.

Lap 18. Hamilton pits. Mercedes-Benz executes a highly efficient, flawless pit stop. Exiting the pit lane, he remains behind Bottas and Kai, but successfully emerges ahead of Leclerc.

Leclerc’s undercut attempt: FAILED.

Lap 20. Bottas pits. Mercedes-Benz once again showcases the absolute fastest, most elite pit crew efficiency in the paddock. Bottas rockets out of the pit lane, falling behind Hamilton, but crucially, emerging ahead of Leclerc.

Bottas’s overcut attempt: SUCCESSFUL!

Out on the asphalt, the track position Leclerc had expended a massive, grueling amount of energy to secure... Mercedes-Benz ultimately reclaimed, relying entirely on their flawless pit stop execution and their unparalleled, vastly superior tire operating windows.

Leclerc fought with absolutely everything he had, desperately attempting to prevent Bottas’s overcut. However, reality remained a massive, insurmountable obstacle staring him in the face—

Just moments ago in the pit lane, they had all swapped to the White Hard tires. The SF90 on cold Hard tires essentially possessed absolutely zero rhythm or grip. At this exact moment, the W10’s inherent advantage on cold tires was violently, massively amplified. Bottas executed an absolutely flawless, spectacular overcut, successfully reclaiming his position.

If you observed carefully, you would notice that Bottas didn’t just overcut Leclerc; he also significantly slashed the gap to Hamilton. The five-second deficit prior to the pit stops had now shrunk back down to under three seconds. Bottas’s aggressive push during his final few laps on the Red Soft tires had been absolutely phenomenal.

It was glaringly obvious: Bottas still hadn’t given up. He remained entirely locked onto Hamilton. The instant an opportunity presented itself, he would not hesitate to strike for the victory.

However, this minor, lingering internal threat was completely insignificant compared to the bigger picture—

”Brilliant!”

Wolff clenched his fists and pumped his arms in triumph. A flash of lethal, predatory intent gleamed in his eyes. The entire Mercedes-Benz garage instantly erupted into a boiling, roaring celebration.

Throughout the entirety of the first variable phase, Mercedes-Benz had been trapped in a reactive, passive posture. One wrong step led to a cascade of wrong steps. They had consistently lagged one beat behind Ferrari, entirely unable to seize control of the narrative. It felt exactly like being trapped in quicksand, slowly, agonizingly sliding into an inescapable abyss. But now, relying on a single, perfectly executed pit cycle, they had violently, definitively reversed their fortunes.

Moving into the second variable phase, Mercedes-Benz would firmly, absolutely grip the initiative.

However, there was still one massive, looming problem currently out on the track—

”Ladies and gentlemen, Kai is now officially leading the 2019 Shanghai Grand Prix!”

The exact moment Bottas dove into the pit lane, the car leading the pack down the main straight officially changed to Kai. The Number 22 Ferrari rocketed magnificently past the main grandstand and the pit wall. The home crowd instantly descended into absolute, unhinged fanaticism. Absolutely no one could remain calmly seated in their chairs.

They leaped to their feet en masse, throwing their arms into the air and screaming. An unbelievable, unmatched surge of energy ignited the entire Shanghai circuit like a raging inferno.

The deafening, chaotic noise poured down exactly like a torrential summer rainstorm. The very air itself became thick, sticky, and visually blurred.

Yet, inside the cockpit of the Number 22 car, there was absolute, perfect, crystal-clear focus—

Directly ahead, there were absolutely no other cars. The race leaders had all entered the pit lane, and the backmarkers hadn’t yet entered his field of vision for lapping. This meant he was operating in perfectly clean air.

This is the absolute most coveted, yet simultaneously most dangerous, state for any elite driver. There is no slipstream to exploit, and crucially, there are absolutely no reference points to help regulate your rhythm. Everything must originate entirely from within yourself. Because there is no reference point, and no active offensive/defensive battling, it is physically impossible to immediately detect if you are running slightly too fast or slightly too slow. Usually, you have to wait for your race engineer to relay telemetry feedback before you realize you’ve drifted off pace. Relying entirely on raw instinct to dictate the rhythm makes it incredibly easy to completely lose your way.

It demands immense experience, an intimate understanding of the circuit’s nuances, and absolute, flawless mastery over the race car.

Clearly, these were all attributes Kai theoretically lacked. This was only the third race of the SF90’s lifespan, and merely his second career appearance at the Shanghai circuit. If leading the race was purely about setting the pace, he possessed some relevant experience from last season. But right now, leading the race wasn’t that simple. He was simultaneously shouldering massive strategic responsibilities. On the surface, the situation looked remarkably similar to Monaco last year. But in reality, the underlying dynamics were entirely, fundamentally different. Without a shadow of a doubt, this was an absolutely brutal, severe trial.

Yet, Kai looked as though he had been waiting for this exact moment for a very, very long time.

There were no frantic, rushed inputs. There were no unnecessary, erratic probing maneuvers. He didn’t foolishly bury his head and charge blindly forward. Instead, he systematically, methodically elevated his pace with perfectly even, consistent progression. Corner by corner, sector by sector, he slowly accumulated momentum. He maintained continuous, unbroken communication with Borreipaire, ensuring he possessed real-time awareness of every microscopic shift in rhythm. Ultimately, he allowed his push rhythm to naturally, securely settle directly into the optimal target window.

1:37.777.

1:37.811.

1:37.763.

Lap after lap.

This was Kai’s third distinct pace escalation since the race began. He wasn’t rushing it. He wasn’t trying to swallow an elephant in a single bite. He simply elevated his performance to the next distinct tier.

And then, he maintained absolute stability. He did everything in his power to ensure his single-lap pace hovered on a highly delicate, razor-thin equilibrium line—fast enough to exert continuous, suffocating pressure on his rivals, but not so fast that it shattered the fragile performance balance of the SF90 itself.

This was the highly specific operational window they had meticulously calculated and repeatedly simulated throughout Free Practice and Qualifying—

It wasn’t the absolute fastest pace possible, but rather the absolute maximum sustainable pace.

The SF90 still lacked its crucial upgrade packages. The fatal flaws remained glaringly present:

The rear axle was incredibly sensitive to thermal fluctuations. Under long-run race conditions, tire degradation arrived with terrifying, sudden brutality. If he aggressively chased absolute, peak single-lap speed, the tires would suffer a catastrophic, unannounced collapse.

Exactly like what had just happened to Leclerc.

Therefore, throughout the entire Shanghai Grand Prix weekend, Kai hadn’t been distracted by the overwhelming swarm of off-track promotional events. He had been tirelessly, obsessively searching for the correct methodology to completely deconstruct the circuit.

He needed to keep the car operating within a relatively stable, predictable state. Relying entirely on his individual brilliance, he had to discover the absolute ceiling for single-lap pace under those specific, constrained conditions. Despite encountering numerous setbacks and challenges, he had indeed finally managed to unlock a few crucial secrets.

Turn 1: Deliberately compress the entry speed and delay the throttle application.

The Turn 2, 3, 4 complex: Completely abandon aggressive steering angles. Utilize a significantly smoother, rounder trajectory to preserve crucial rear tire temperature.

Approaching the high-speed Turns 7 and 8: Lift off the throttle a half-beat earlier than usual, allowing the car’s dynamic posture to smoothly transfer its weight while remaining safely below the absolute physical limit.

Every single cornering approach wasn’t the ”Absolute Fastest Solution,” but rather the ”Absolute Most Efficient Solution.”

The true value of clean air didn’t lie in how fast you could run. It lay in—

How cleanly you could run.

Kai was systematically deconstructing the circuit. He had mentally fractured the rhythm points of the Shanghai circuit into distinct, isolated segments. Which corners demanded absolute protection of the rear tires? Which corners could he aggressively lean on the front axle to gain time? Which straights could he rely entirely on engine mapping to compensate for lost momentum? Which sections demanded absolute perfection in corner-exit quality? Where did steering inputs need to be incredibly delicate and soft? Where did corner-entry points need to be surgically precise?

And on, and on.

Every single one of these interpretations and judgments originated directly from the grueling work in Free Practice and Qualifying. They were the hard-fought conclusions Kai, Clear, and Borreipaire had meticulously, agonizingly hammered out frame by frame inside the conference room.

He wasn’t actively attempting to discover the absolute physical limit of the car. Because Melbourne and Bahrain had already proven exactly where that limit lay. If he continued to stubbornly push past that line, the inevitable result would be the car catastrophically disintegrating under the strain. Instead, he was actively attempting to execute a breathtaking, ethereal dance while wearing heavy iron shackles. Despite being severely restricted and heavily bound, he projected an aura of effortless, weightless grace. Operating within a microscopic, razor-thin margin for error, he was actively sculpting a sustainable, repeatable rhythm curve.

Focus. Immersion.

Sweat poured down like rain.

Yet, he was completely, utterly oblivious to it. He felt nothing, and it didn’t matter.

His highly concentrated, laser-focused attention meticulously captured every single microscopic fluctuation in both the track and the car. He continuously adjusted and corrected his inputs based on real-time feedback. His nerve endings felt as though they were physically grafted onto the four tires. The subtle, granular friction between the surface of the rubber and the asphalt transmitted lightly, directly into his heart. Like Morse code, the sensations telegraphed perfectly into his fingertips and the soles of his feet. The entire race car had seamlessly become a physical extension of his own body. Absolutely everything became crystal clear.

The howling wind, the ambient temperature, the rolling heatwaves... tangled with the brutal G-forces, surging powerfully yet incredibly delicately against his skin. His pores could physically feel it all with every single breath.

Even though he was wearing heavy shackles, Kai still managed to discover a wildly uninhibited, magnificently fluid method of dancing. He was completely, blissfully lost in the moment, entirely unable to extricate himself.

Without a shadow of a doubt, this was pure, unadulterated ecstasy.

In a daze, he felt exactly like he was transported back to Monaco last year. Yet, this was fundamentally different from Monaco.

Back then in Monaco, Kai had completely thrown off the shackles and sprinted flat-out, desperately chasing the absolute pinnacle of speed within the claustrophobic, suffocating confines of the street circuit.

Here in Shanghai, the SF90 simply refused to grant Kai that level of reckless freedom. Although it looked like he was sprinting aggressively and pushing with overwhelming momentum, his single-lap pace actually lacked any true, razor-sharp edge.

The superficial appearances were similar, but the underlying core reality was entirely different. Yet, Kai felt the exact same profound sense of fulfillment and exhilarating joy—

He felt as though he had brushed right up against his own absolute limits, yet he was simultaneously, quietly shattering those limits, continuing his relentless exploration into infinite possibilities. That uninhibited, unbridled joy and absolute freedom caused every single sweat-drenched cell in his body to open wide, absorbing the raw energy of the world, perhaps even the universe itself. His perspective and vision violently expanded.

In truth, the most glaring, undeniable difference was this: The Radio.

Here in Shanghai, in this exact moment, Borreipaire’s communication was continuous and unbroken. He was providing real-time updates on the car’s telemetry, constantly alerting Kai to every single microscopic shift in data. Simultaneously, Kai was continuously feeding back his physical, sensory perception of the car’s handling, creating a flawless, real-time validation loop with the hard data Borreipaire was observing on the screens.

Data meeting instinct. The computer meeting physical execution. The front lines and the rear command. Even though they appeared to be separated by immense distance, they were, in reality, operating in perfect synchronization within the exact same spatial dimension.

Through every single corner, through every single sector, with every passing second, real-time fluctuations could potentially trigger a massive chain reaction. The two men absolutely had to operate in flawless synchronization. 100% trust, 100% precision. And more importantly, 100% hypersensitivity. Total concentration, maximum focus. There was zero margin for error.

Two men, one machine. Three entirely distinct, independent entities, quietly and flawlessly merging into a single, unified organism. Maintaining the exact same rhythm, sprinting furiously down the asphalt.

Pressure?

No. Absolutely none. There was zero tension, zero anxiety, zero hesitation, and zero wavering indecision. Quite the opposite: operating in a state of extreme euphoria and absolute, hyper-focused concentration, the two men were genuinely, deeply enjoying the experience.

In a daze, even the chaotic, deafening roar of the engine echoing in his ears transformed into a beautifully elegant, perfectly composed symphony. It was utterly intoxicating and deeply refreshing.

And then, Kai finally began to build a genuine advantage—

The gap between him and Hamilton, trailing behind, was slowly, steadily widening.

Initially, the gap expanded by a mere 0.2 seconds.

Then, 0.9 seconds.

In the blink of an eye, 1.3 seconds.

One step. Then another small step. Like a steady, methodical march. It looked incredibly unassuming, practically insignificant. Yet, through relentless, unyielding accumulation, it eventually transformed into a journey of a thousand miles.

While the attention of the entire paddock was boiling over because Hamilton successfully blocked Leclerc’s undercut, and Bottas successfully executed an overcut on Leclerc... Kai, who had quietly, almost invisibly become the undisputed race leader, was systematically dragging the entire race into his own personal domain of control. By the time the Mercedes-Benz pit wall snapped out of their brief moment of joy and emotional release, Kai had already perfectly locked in his rhythm.

Vowles, who had been obsessively, continuously monitoring the live telemetry data, was the very first to spot the anomaly. A million different thoughts surged violently through his brain, instantly coalescing into a single, terrifying realization:

Shit. We took the bait!

Everything was a trap. Everything was a meticulously orchestrated layout—

From the very first moment Kai elevated his pace, this massive game of chess had officially begun. Stripping away all the flashy maneuvers and the dense smokescreens, at its absolute core, Ferrari only ever had one singular, overarching objective:

Violently shatter Mercedes-Benz’s race rhythm.

The three-stop rumors. The internal position swap. Leclerc’s flat-out sprint. The specific, granular details of those actions didn’t actually matter. What truly mattered was the crushing pressure those actions inflicted upon Mercedes-Benz. Ferrari had perfectly, flawlessly manipulated Wolff’s burning psychological need to establish absolute dominance. Step by calculated step, they had guided Mercedes-Benz exactly onto the tracks they had laid out.

Kai attacked; they accelerated.

Leclerc arrived; they accelerated again.

Mercedes-Benz’s live, on-the-fly reactions had played out exactly, 100% according to Ferrari’s calculations.

When Leclerc pitted first, Ferrari didn’t hesitate or waver for a single second. Because that was always the strategy. It had absolutely nothing to do with how Mercedes-Benz might respond. Leclerc had aggressively pushed his tires to the absolute limit, forcing Mercedes-Benz to feel massive, suffocating pressure. His tires genuinely couldn’t endure any longer. Pitting was the natural, inevitable consequence. But Leclerc’s aggressively sharp, deeply menacing posture served as an incredibly vital component within the larger, ’scheme-within-a-scheme’ master plan.

At that specific moment, having had their rhythm violently shattered three separate times, the tire degradation for both Mercedes cars was undeniably higher than originally projected. The pit window had been shifted slightly forward. Coupled with Leclerc’s highly aggressive undercut posture, Mercedes-Benz’s required counter-strategy was glaringly obvious. It was entirely predictable—

Hamilton blocks Leclerc’s undercut. Bottas attempts to overcut Leclerc.

Mercedes-Benz cheered wildly for successfully reclaiming the on-track initiative. They were entirely oblivious to the terrifying reality that their every single action, every single movement, was playing out perfectly within Ferrari’s grand chess match.

Absolutely everything mentioned above, every single stage of the plan, existed solely for this exact, impending moment: Kai’s overcut attempt!

”Ferrari on Red Softs VS. Mercedes-Benz on White Hards.”

Everyone in the paddock knew that Mercedes-Benz possessed absolutely phenomenal performance on cold tires. This specific trait consistently granted them a massive, almost unbelievable advantage during the brutal, millimeter-close battles on track. But that advantage possessed severe, inherent limitations. When comparing two cars both operating on cold tires, Mercedes-Benz was undeniably superior.

However. Comparing Cold Tires VS. Hot Tires?!

There is absolutely no comparison.

It didn’t matter how much of a ’rocket ship’ the W10 was; it absolutely could not violate the fundamental laws of physics.

Furthermore, this was a duel between Soft tires and Hard tires! It was exactly the same dynamic that had allowed Bottas (on Softs) to execute a brutal overcut on the freshly pitted Leclerc (on Hards) just moments ago.

THIS was Ferrari’s true, ultimate lethal weapon.

It was a form of absolute suppression!

But it wasn’t the crushing, overwhelming pressure of a mountain collapsing on top of them. It was the terrifying, suffocating sensation of losing total control, of being helplessly led around by the nose.

The Number 22 car wasn’t relying on explosive, short-term bursts of speed. It was relying on the absolute continuity and unbreakable integrity of its rhythm. It was seizing control of the entire race through a significantly more advanced, infinitely more insidious methodology.

Kai pushed every single lap right up to the absolute, bleeding edge of the tires’ stability limit. He danced frantically on the razor’s edge of catastrophe, keeping the car in a state of constant, terrifying peril without ever actually crossing the line into disaster. The instant Mercedes-Benz showed the slightest hesitation, the tiniest flicker of indecision... he would violently seize the opportunity, slicing through the gap and ripping open a massive, bleeding wound.

And then, total inversion!

THIS was the true, apocalyptic crisis facing Mercedes-Benz.

Vowles instantly extracted the brutal truth from the tangled mess of telemetry data. He didn’t panic. He didn’t lose his composure. He immediately relayed his terrifying discovery directly to Wolff.

Wolff froze. The joy of Bottas successfully suppressing Leclerc was still echoing in his chest, but it instantly froze solid, turning to ice. He rapidly scanned the live broadcast monitors, his sharp eyes instantly locking onto the critical detail. ”But his single-lap pace isn’t overwhelmingly dominant. He didn’t shatter the fastest lap record Leclerc just set.”

In other words, the overcut attempt didn’t appear to be particularly ferocious or threatening.

”Correct,” Vowles affirmed. ”My deduction is that he is deliberately attempting to artificially extend his stint on the track. He is continuously, relentlessly shoveling the pressure entirely onto our shoulders, forcing us to make the agonizing choices.”

In other words, it could be interpreted like this: Ferrari deliberately threw out a massive, highly tempting piece of bait, forcing Mercedes-Benz to make a choice. But regardless of which option Mercedes-Benz selected, Ferrari had already prepared a lethal counter-measure. They retained total tactical flexibility. Based entirely on how Mercedes-Benz responded, Ferrari would then execute the next phase of their master plan.

Mercedes-Benz’s options were incredibly simple. There were exactly two.

Option One: Hamilton and Bottas completely ignore Kai. They continue to run their own optimal, calculated rhythm. If they do this, Kai’s overcut is guaranteed to succeed. He will officially take the lead of the Shanghai Grand Prix. Moving forward, Mercedes-Benz will be plunged into a severely passive posture. They will be desperately forced to formulate a new strategy to reverse the momentum before the second round of pit stops.

Option Two: Hamilton and Bottas initiate a maximum, flat-out push. They violently choke out Kai’s overcut attempt. But the absolute, unavoidable cost of this action is severe tire degradation. The brand-new White Hard tires they just bolted onto the cars will be subjected to massive, unnecessary wear. This will completely shatter Mercedes-Benz’s strategic layout for the second variable phase. Ferrari will still easily be able to dig massive tactical traps for them during that exact same phase.

Of course, there was a minor sub-branch to this option. Hamilton and Bottas could split their strategies. Hamilton prevents Kai’s overcut, while Bottas holds his pace. Bottas could simultaneously block Leclerc while theoretically chasing Kai. This would at least preserve Bottas’s tire life, granting Mercedes-Benz slightly more tactical flexibility later. However, this would grant Kai a direct, unimpeded opportunity to viciously threaten Hamilton. Ferrari would still possess massive operational space to execute their traps during the second variable phase.

So that was it—

Wolff finally, completely understood everything. His heart violently contracted in his chest.

During the first round of pit stops just moments ago, Mercedes-Benz had seemingly won the localized skirmish, but on a structural, macro-strategic level, they had entirely, utterly lost the initiative. In the grand battle of the first variable phase, Mercedes-Benz had been comprehensively defeated. Consequently, the opening of the second variable phase was now dictating a severely passive posture for them.

”But... HOW?!” Wolff was genuinely struggling to comprehend it. ”How exactly are they doing this?! Kai’s Soft tires have been running for over twenty laps! How is he possibly still pushing?!”

The SF90 was absolutely not the SF71H. Its ability to sustain continuous, aggressive pushing under extreme, long-run race conditions was fundamentally, catastrophically different. Perhaps the SF90’s absolute peak velocity was superior to the SF71H, but regarding sustainability, stability, and overall continuity... the SF71H was undeniably vastly superior.

Last season, Kai was frequently able to leverage aggressive strategies to wring the absolute physical limit out of the car, orchestrating legendary, miraculous comebacks. But attempting the exact same feats with this year’s car was physically impossible.

So, what on earth was actually happening right now?

Vowles’ voice crackled through the earpiece. ”Kai has never actually pushed to the absolute, physical limit. Do you remember, Toto?”

That calm, deeply rational voice acted like a jagged ice pick, stabbing violently directly into Wolff’s heart.

No wonder!

Whether it was his two initial pace escalations, or the subsequent, deliberate position swap allowing Leclerc to launch the offensive, or even right now, while attempting the overcut... he had constantly held massive reserves of performance back. Time and time again, he had violently shoved the burden of choice directly onto Mercedes-Benz. It looked exactly like a cat sadistically playing with a mouse, deliberately humiliating Mercedes-Benz. But the brutal, underlying truth was that the SF90 simply did not possess the capability to deliver a lethal, one-hit kill. Therefore, they had been forced to meticulously engineer this incredibly complex, interlocking, multi-layered trap.

Inviting the target into the urn.

And inexplicably, Mercedes-Benz had happily, stupidly waltzed right into the trap.

But upon further reflection, a cruel, mocking smile crept back onto Wolff’s lips. All of Ferrari’s cheap parlor tricks were now completely, nakedly exposed. There were absolutely no secrets left. Mercedes-Benz’s race car still possessed a massive, undeniable performance advantage. Since Ferrari’s single-lap pace ceiling was a hard, physical reality that simply could not be breached, then Mercedes-Benz would happily engage in a brutal, head-to-head battle of long-run tire degradation. They would see who truly possessed the strength to laugh last in a genuine, unvarnished dogfight.

Heh.

After clearing away the thick fog of deception and finally seeing the naked truth... despite the impending crisis, despite the extreme difficulty, despite being forced into a passive posture... despite the intense frustration... Wolff actually felt completely, totally calm.

Ferrari’s grand chessboard was now largely exposed. What happened next would depend entirely on Mercedes-Benz’s counter-attack.

The only reason Ferrari had been forced to run around in such massive, convoluted circles was, fundamentally, because they lacked raw performance. Mercedes-Benz suffered from absolutely no such anxieties. They could face the challenge honorably and head-on. They would answer every single threat with absolute, undeniable strength.

It was pure, unadulterated confidence.

A low chuckle rumbled within Wolff’s chest. Overflowing with towering ambition and absolute, dictatorial authority, he issued the singular command:

”PUSH!”
