F1: The Speed Legend

—1:37.419. Hamilton.

—1:37.376. Bottas.

—1:37.379. Hamilton.

Although Croft was slightly behind the curve, he astutely noted the sudden, violent shift in the dynamic out on the asphalt. Just moments ago, Kai had been aggressively leveraging the performance advantage of his Red Soft tires to carve out a gap. Mercedes-Benz had immediately and decisively answered the call. Both Silver Arrows simultaneously shifted into push mode, re-establishing their dominance.

Mercedes-Benz was once again vividly demonstrating the terrifying capability of the W10. Operating on brand-new, theoretically slower Hard tires, they not only perfectly matched Kai’s single-lap data on the Softs, but they actually managed to edge him out by a microscopic margin.

Clearly, Mercedes-Benz had seen right through Kai’s overcut attempt. Unleashing their absolute, raw power, they struck like a torrential hurricane, obliterating Ferrari’s seemingly insignificant tactical maneuver. It felt exactly like a brutal, public manifesto, a demonstration designed specifically to force Ferrari to comprehend that the performance chasm separating the W10 and the SF90 remained an utterly insurmountable abyss.

Croft, an individual who never believed a situation could be too chaotic or dramatic, was absolutely thrilled. The previously dull, monotonous race was finally generating genuine sparks. He practically raised both hands and feet in enthusiastic approval.

”Mercedes-Benz delivers an immediate, devastating response! The ball is firmly back in Kai’s court. If he wants to succeed, he’s going to have to find another gear.”

However—

Nothing happened. 1:37.599. Kai remained incredibly steady, flawlessly smooth, and entirely, 100% focused. He drove as if he were completely, blissfully unaware of the raging tsunami crashing down right behind him.

Wait... was it actually possible that Kai hadn’t noticed?

The answer to that was a resounding ’No.’

”Kai, front tires. Watch the front tires.” Borreipaire instantly flagged the anomalous shift in the temperature curve.

”I know,” Kai replied calmly. ”They’re starting to blister. But hey, we haven’t suffered a catastrophic, cliff-drop loss of grip yet. I call that a massive improvement, don’t you?” A hint of a smile leaked into his voice. Finding bitter amusement in their agonizing predicament, Kai hadn’t lost his sense of humor, even in this incredibly tense, highly critical moment.

It wasn’t that Kai didn’t want to push harder. It was that he physically couldn’t.

His current rhythm represented the absolute, physical ceiling of the car’s capability in its current state. The instant Kai broke that delicate equilibrium and attempted to elevate his pace further, this specific set of tires would suffer total, catastrophic collapse within a lap, maybe two laps max. However, if Kai maintained his current, highly controlled rhythm, he could likely stretch this stint for several more laps, forcing Mercedes-Benz to continue aggressively burning through their brand-new Hard tires.

The complex reality of tire management functioned like this:

The current single-lap times out on the track couldn’t even begin to be compared to Qualifying pace. In fact, they were significantly slower than the Qualifying times posted by the agonizingly slow Williams cars. This glaringly obvious fact meant that absolutely every single car on the grid was physically capable of running significantly faster. The reason they weren’t? First, the cars were heavy, fully loaded with race fuel. But the true, overriding reason was the tires. They absolutely had to manage tire degradation. Operating from the macro-strategic perspective of navigating the second variable phase of the race, every single driver possessed their own specific, meticulously calculated rhythm. Exactly when to push, and exactly how hard to push... these were all highly sensitive variables that required constant, ongoing negotiation and absolute, surgical control.

Right now, if Hamilton and Bottas wanted to elevate their pace, they could absolutely do so without the slightest mechanical difficulty. Even operating on Hard tires, and even if those tires weren’t fully up to temperature, they could effortlessly match, or even obliterate, Kai’s single-lap times. However, doing so absolutely demanded a heavy price.

By forcefully dragging the White Hard tires into their optimal operating window prematurely, and violently extracting their performance potential so early in the stint, the internal temperatures would spike far too rapidly. The resulting tire degradation curve would instantly become terrifyingly steep.

This single, seemingly microscopic detail would, without a shadow of a doubt, profoundly impact the entirety of the second variable phase. It meant Hamilton and Bottas would be forced to completely recalculate and restructure their entire pacing strategy for the remainder of the stint.

Consequently, the longer Kai managed to drag out his stint on the track—acting like a painfully irritating, un-swallowable fishbone lodged firmly in their throats—the longer he could force Mercedes-Benz to continuously, aggressively shatter the standard, optimal tire degradation curve. He was violently pushing back the timeline for when Mercedes-Benz could safely re-evaluate their strategy for the second variable phase, severely compressing their available tactical wiggle room.

One interlocking ring after another, advancing step by agonizingly calculated step. This intricate master plan, which had been quietly initiated all the way back on Lap 4, was slowly, meticulously revealing its full, terrifying scope.

Wolff was absolutely correct. Mercedes-Benz possessed the raw performance advantage to act capriciously and recklessly. Ferrari simply did not have that luxury.

Therefore, Ferrari was forced to rely on complex strategic layouts. They had to rely on relentless, meticulous calculation. They had to orchestrate massive, convoluted detours just to manufacture a tiny, microscopic sliver of an opportunity—and whether they could actually successfully cash in that opportunity remained entirely unknown.

But that absolutely didn’t mean Ferrari was devoid of opportunity. Quite the opposite. Mercedes-Benz’s towering arrogance and supreme self-confidence were highly likely to become the exact, fatal breach point Ferrari needed.

”What’s the pace like for Mercedes-Benz?” Kai inquired over the radio.

Borreipaire glanced quickly at the telemetry screens. ”Hamilton, 37.351. Bottas, 37.122.”

Kai’s eyebrows arched slightly beneath his helmet. ”Oh. Bottas. Well, that’s a surprise!”

Currently, Hamilton didn’t possess the luxury of time or mental bandwidth to worry about Bottas. His primary, overriding focus had to be locked entirely onto Kai’s rhythm. He was simultaneously trying to prevent the overcut while desperately doing everything in his power to protect his own tires.

Yet, despite his focus on the car ahead, Hamilton was intensely feeling the aggressive, suffocating pressure radiating from Bottas, who was in relentless pursuit right behind him. What the hell is wrong with this guy today? Did a wire snap in his brain? Why is he so obsessed with fighting me?!

Bottas: ?

Did this gentleman magically forget who actually secured Pole Position yesterday? And who was it that executed a cunning, underhanded maneuver at the start, completely tossing sportsmanship out the window, shattering the pre-race layout, and single-handedly destroying our coordinated team strategy? Who was it that arrogantly charged ahead by himself, leaving the actual Pole Sitter to get swallowed up in a brutal, chaotic dogfight against three young, hungry drivers?

The race was only twenty laps old, yet this gentleman seemed to have suffered a catastrophic bout of amnesia. Are you absolutely certain you don’t need to start taking fish oil supplements to improve your memory?

Perhaps Hamilton had conveniently forgotten, but Bottas absolutely hadn’t. And he never, ever would—

Guarding against Kai’s overcut was undeniably the primary, stated objective. But conveniently, Bottas was using that exact directive as an ironclad excuse to aggressively elevate his own pace and continuously slash the gap to the race leader.

Regarding the World Championship, Bottas still burned with towering ambition. He absolutely refused to play the role of the foolish, obedient sidekick. He refused to become the pathetic, tragicomic clown living permanently in the suffocating shadow of the ’Great Lewis Hamilton’—

1:37.122.

”Valtteri Bottas! He shatters the fastest lap record!”

”An absolutely magnificent lap! To think Bottas could lay down such a stunningly beautiful lap immediately after switching to the brand-new Hard tires. You simply have to admit it: Mercedes-Benz is genuinely, terrifyingly dominant.”

The exact moment Kai heard the telemetry data relayed by Borreipaire over the radio, he instantly realized that Bottas was actively, aggressively resetting the fastest lap record. His sharp instincts immediately detected the distinct, unmistakable scent of anomaly lingering in the air. Ever since the lights went out, the restless, agitated, fiercely competitive atmosphere brewing internally at Mercedes-Benz had been constantly simmering, desperately searching for an outlet.

Because of this realization, Kai remained as immovable as a mountain. He resolutely continued to execute his current, established rhythm—

As long as he remained out on the asphalt, continuing to stubbornly maintain this exact pace, the crushing pressure would remain permanently suspended directly over Mercedes-Benz’s head. Hamilton and Bottas would have absolutely no choice but to remain locked in an aggressive push state.

At this specific juncture, the ultimate objective was no longer achieving the overcut itself. It was entirely about applying maximum pressure.

Of course, if Bottas managed to keep up the good work and continued silently, relentlessly applying massive pressure to Hamilton... if the invisible, choking smoke and razor-wire tension continued to saturate the air... then the situation would become absolutely perfect. It would be entirely, flawlessly ideal.

Right now, Kai simply needed to stay out on the track. He needed to buy Bottas as much time as possible to exert that pressure and rapidly close the gap. He was incredibly confident that the Mercedes-Benz pit wall could viscerally feel the agonizingly tight, volatile atmosphere brewing within their own team. But because the external threat—Kai—was currently leading the race, Wolff would highly likely be forced to turn a blind eye to the internal civil war.

Keep pushing, Valtteri! You can do it!

Kai’s hypothesis... was entirely, 100% correct.

The Mercedes-Benz pit wall had undeniably noticed the escalating situation. Hamilton immediately relayed the critical intel back to the garage. ”We absolutely must maintain stability in our rhythm. What on earth is Valtteri trying to accomplish?!”

Bono understood Hamilton perfectly. ”Lewis, focus. Maintain absolute focus. Our target is Kai. Absolutely nothing else matters right now.”

After briefly, attempting to soothe Hamilton’s frayed nerves, Bono immediately turned around, switched his radio channel, and filed an urgent, impassioned appeal directly to Wolff. They absolutely had to present a united front right now. Internal division would be disastrous.

Wolff stood with his arms crossed tightly over his chest. He remained silent for a short, agonizingly tense moment. ”How much longer can Kai realistically maintain this level of performance?”

Bono thought about it carefully. ”One lap. Maybe two laps at the absolute maximum.”

In truth, according to conventional logic and standard tire degradation models, Kai should have completely run out of grip several laps ago. Absolutely every other driver on the entire grid had already completed at least one pit stop. The phenomenally unlucky Carlos Sainz, having suffered yet another mechanical failure, had actually pitted twice. The sole, solitary driver who hadn’t entered the pit lane was Kai.

It involuntarily triggered traumatic flashbacks to Monaco last year.

But the critical reality was this: Monaco was not Shanghai. And this year was absolutely not last year.

Wolff’s thoughts instantly crystallized into perfect clarity. Since Kai could only theoretically endure for another one or two laps, there was absolutely no reason to actively intervene in the situation. ”Tell Lewis to remain entirely focused on his own rhythm.”

Clearly, Wolff was completely unwilling to disrupt the current equilibrium—

Even though internal competition was undeniably raging within Mercedes-Benz, viewing the situation holistically, the overall balance of power remained relatively stable. Bottas was harboring some ambitious schemes; Hamilton was voicing some minor complaints. But everything remained firmly, securely contained within manageable parameters. It hadn’t escalated to the critical threshold requiring forceful, dictatorial intervention. Maintaining the status quo was unquestionably the wisest, most pragmatic strategic choice.

Quietly, invisibly, a terrifying wave of tension was steadily, relentlessly climbing higher and higher. Croft and Brundle were the very first to detect it. Yet another massive, critical turning point was rapidly approaching.

Lap 20.

Lap 21.

By this point, even slightly more observant, dedicated fans like Li Lingyu had sensed it. Hidden beneath the seemingly straightforward, monotonous process of churning out lap times, the agonizing, high-speed tug-of-war between Kai, Hamilton, and Bottas was growing increasingly, violently taut. The suffocating, compounding pressure generated by the relentless pursuit was causing the air itself to become blisteringly hot. Even though the sky remained completely overcast, you could vividly, tangibly feel the sticky, humid, rolling heatwaves saturating the atmosphere.

Lap 22!

Lap 23!

The energy continued to violently accumulate. The temperature continued to spike. Eventually, even the casual spectators in the main grandstands and the relaxed viewers watching at home could clearly feel the oppressive, volatile atmosphere.

The live broadcast feed continuously updated the raw telemetry. It provided direct, horizontal comparisons of the single-lap times and specific micro-sector splits between Kai, Hamilton, and Bottas. Using clear, highly intuitive graphics, it beautifully showcased their intense, long-distance proxy war. Even though they weren’t engaged in wheel-to-wheel, physical combat, the spectacle was equally, if not more, thrilling.

The reality of the situation couldn’t have been clearer.

The vicious, barely contained tension radiating between the two Mercedes cars was gradually bleeding over, standing in stark, jarring contrast to Kai’s seemingly unshakeable, immovable calm.

In a daze, it created a highly bizarre, profoundly surreal illusion. It felt exactly as though the true, heavyweight title fight was currently raging between the Number 44 and the Number 77 cars, while the Number 22 car was nothing more than an innocent, insignificant little shrimp caught in the crossfire of two battling leviathans.

But the absolute, hilarious irony of the entire situation was this: The car currently leading the entire race was that exact same ”insignificant little shrimp”—

Gentlemen, isn’t your primary focus slightly misplaced here?

This profound sense of utter absurdity, violently mixed with extreme, suffocating tension and adrenaline-pumping thrills, completely saturated the entire circuit. Exactly like a pressure cooker violently whistling on a hot stove, the pressure continued its relentless, terrifying climb, teetering dangerously on the absolute brink of explosive detonation.

The broadcast booth was completely overwhelmed, gasping in continuous shock. It was glaringly obvious: Kai was authoring a spectacular surprise. While every single other car on the grid had successfully completed their pit stops around Lap 20, here on Lap 23, the Number 22 Ferrari was still furiously sprinting around the asphalt. For a split second, it genuinely caused a severe hallucination. What year is it? Is it 2019, or is it 2018?!

Was the car currently rocketing around the Shanghai circuit actually an SF90?!

The atmosphere on the Mercedes-Benz pit wall was grim, resembling a sky choked with massive, dark storm clouds. What happened to ”one lap, maybe two laps max”? What happened to the SF90’s notoriously catastrophic long-run tire degradation? What happened to the hilarious ”LiCo” meme?!

Even though Kai’s rhythm remained strictly contained within highly managed parameters, and even though Mercedes-Benz could effortlessly match or even exceed his pace to successfully crush his overcut attempt... the brutal reality of Kai’s first stint was drastically, terrifyingly exceeding all their projections. That lingering, unshakeable premonition of impending doom gripped their hearts like a vice.

But what on earth were they supposed to do now?

The arrow had already left the bow; there was absolutely no turning back!

”No!”

Wolff abruptly straightened his spine. In the absolute, most critical moment of crisis, he displayed the terrifying resolve and sheer willpower of a true titan. He violently wrenched himself free from the false illusion Ferrari had so meticulously crafted, reclaiming the decisive authority of an elite leader.

”Return to your own rhythms. Lewis. And Valtteri.”

Since Mercedes-Benz had already successfully, decisively thwarted Kai’s overcut attempt, and since it was glaringly obvious that Kai possessed absolutely zero remaining capacity to further elevate his pace... why on earth were they still blindly, foolishly allowing themselves to be dragged along by Kai’s rhythm? And why on earth were they idly, stupidly standing by while Bottas continuously, aggressively attempted to challenge Hamilton’s position, plunging the team into a catastrophic state of internal, suicidal attrition?

Right now, Hamilton and Bottas could easily, comfortably revert to their own optimal, calculated rhythms. They needed to immediately begin laying the strategic groundwork for the second variable phase and forcefully reclaim the initiative.

Of course, a terrifying alternative scenario existed—

What if Kai had been deliberately, meticulously maintaining his rhythm stability explicitly to reserve energy for a massive, explosive, flat-out sprint in the final few laps right before he pitted? If he suddenly saw Mercedes-Benz drastically reduce their pace, he could potentially launch a second, significantly more dangerous overcut attempt.

Regarding that specific scenario, Wolff wasn’t worried in the slightest.

First, if Kai attempted that, his meticulously managed rhythm would be instantly, violently shattered. In this brutal, high-stakes war of control versus counter-control, Mercedes-Benz had finally, definitively seized the upper hand. Kai’s tires would almost certainly suffer total, catastrophic collapse within moments.

Second, even if Kai genuinely managed to execute a miraculous, successful overcut... Hamilton was currently operating on Hard tires that had already been brought perfectly up to their optimal operating temperature. Facing a Kai emerging from the pit lane on brand-new, ice-cold Hard tires... Hamilton would possess an absolute, crushing, tyrannical advantage.

In other words, Mercedes-Benz had absolutely zero reason to panic. The sooner they violently ripped themselves free from the deceptive illusion Ferrari had manufactured, the sooner the absolute initiative would return firmly to their grasp.

Toto Wolff. He truly lived up to his legendary reputation. Perhaps his granular, technical understanding of complex aerodynamics or deep telemetry data wasn’t as profound as the elite engineers, but when it came to brutal, high-stakes psychological warfare and reading the broader strategic narrative, he was an absolute, undisputed master of the paddock.

With a sudden, violent slam of the brakes, Mercedes-Benz forcibly wrestled the situation back under their absolute control.

Kai was still leading the race. He hadn’t noticed the shift. But Borreipaire’s sharp eyes instantly detected the anomaly. ”Kai, Mercedes-Benz has significantly reduced their pace.”

An eyebrow arched slightly beneath Kai’s helmet. ”Pity.”

But honestly, he wasn’t surprised in the slightest. Wolff and Mercedes-Benz absolutely possessed the elite capability to decipher the trap; it was only ever a matter of time. Right now, it had happened slightly earlier than he originally anticipated, once again emphatically proving Wolff’s terrifyingly sharp, veteran instincts. He had already mentally prepared himself for this exact scenario.

”Box,” Kai commanded, displaying his own brand of absolute, unyielding decisiveness.

Borreipaire cast a rapid, scrutinizing glance at the telemetry screens.

Despite having personally witnessed and actively participated in the entire grueling process... despite intimately understanding the staggering, mind-bending amount of effort Kai was expending out on the asphalt... even he, sitting safely behind the pit wall, was feeling profound, crushing levels of both mental and physical exhaustion. Let alone Kai. The reality was infinitely more complex and agonizingly difficult than it appeared on the surface. But right now, seeing that this specific set of Red Soft tires had still not hit their absolute, catastrophic limit of endurance, he couldn’t help but marvel in awe.

”Kai, the tires still haven’t reached their absolute limit,” Borreipaire noted, fulfilling his professional duty to inform the driver.

”Copy that,” Kai’s voice crackled back over the radio.

Binotto’s brow furrowed slightly. He turned his head to look at Borreipaire. ”Did I just hear a hint of a smile in his voice? Or is my hearing starting to go bad?”

Borreipaire turned his head to meet Binotto’s gaze. His eyes were absolutely overflowing with a massive, brilliant smile.

Borreipaire didn’t even need to provide a verbal response. The explosive, shocked scream from Croft on the Sky Sports live broadcast was undoubtedly the absolute best, most definitive answer.

”KAI! SECTOR TWO! PURPLE!”

”MY GOD!”

In everyone’s field of vision, the Number 22 Ferrari instantly transformed into a terrifying, blistering streak of red. Completely abandoning the light, agile, almost delicate posture it had maintained up to this point, it was exactly like a carp violently transforming into a legendary dragon, plunging fiercely into the ocean and causing absolute havoc as it tore across the Shanghai circuit.

Hyper-aggressive corner entries. Razor-sharp entry angles. Flawless, perfectly flowing corner arcs. And the deafening, explosive roar of the engine rocketing down the straights, aggressively slicing the air into ribbons.

Brilliant, flamboyant, and violently aggressive! His razor-sharp edge was fully, terrifyingly unleashed!

It was so wildly uninhibited, so aggressively flamboyant, it bordered on sheer arrogance. Yet, simultaneously, it was so incredibly effortless, so breathtakingly fluid. It was a masterpiece of driving that commanded absolute awe, forcing everyone to involuntarily hold their breath.

THIS was the exact same Kai who had stunned the entire world in the torrential rain at Interlagos last season.

Eyes locked unblinkingly onto the crimson streak as it roared magnificently down the longest straight on the circuit. But at the absolute climax of the crescendo, it violently swerved and dove straight into the pit lane.

Everything abruptly, violently slammed to a halt.

Hearts remained painfully suspended in mid-air. That surging, fanatical excitement couldn’t be released, yet it was impossible to swallow back down. Even though he hadn’t pushed in Sector 1, and he hadn’t even finished Sector 3... that brief, fleeting, awe-inspiring glimpse of pure speed provided an incredibly vivid, terrifying snapshot of exactly what a fully unleashed Ferrari looked like when extracting the absolute limit of its performance during a Race.

Absolutely captivating!

Precisely because Kai hadn’t completed the full flying lap, the agonizingly brief window of breathtaking brilliance actively fueled infinite imagination. Countless thrilling possibilities instantly erupted, completely overwhelming everyone’s brains, causing them to temporarily lose the ability to formulate coherent thoughts. They stared, utterly dumbfounded, as the Ferrari pit crew sprang into frantic, hyper-efficient action. Their wildly hammering hearts leaped straight into their throats. Their minds were absolutely flooded with a million massive question marks, yet they couldn’t find a single logical answer.

So, what exactly were Kai and Ferrari plotting now?!

”Wow.”

Brundle’s profound sigh of awe escaped his lips.

”Swift, decisive, and absolutely ruthless. Is this truly the exact same Ferrari team we’ve always known?”

”The exact second the Mercedes-Benz pit wall initiated their tactical adjustment, Ferrari immediately countered. Kai didn’t hesitate for a single microsecond; he immediately committed to the pit stop, ensuring absolutely zero time was wasted.”

”With this single, brilliant maneuver, Ferrari has once again violently shoved Mercedes-Benz into an incredibly uncomfortable, highly agonizing position.”

Advancing relentlessly, step by calculated step. Aggressive and overbearing—

A relentless, suffocating pursuit!

It was the exact same Shanghai Grand Prix, but the 2019 iteration of Ferrari was fundamentally, entirely unrecognizable from their 2018 counterpart. The clean, razor-sharp efficiency and brilliant execution operating at the strategic level commanded profound respect and awe.

Exactly like a jagged dagger, pressed firmly, inescapably against Mercedes-Benz’s spine.

Wolff: ...

Is Ferrari actually doing this on purpose? That little brat Kai is doing this deliberately just to enrage me, isn’t he? Tirelessly, endlessly poking at me. Poking, poking, poking until I finally lose control and explode. As irritating and relentless as a swarm of flies. Is that Ferrari’s true, overarching master plan today?!

A second ago, Mercedes-Benz finally, decisively resolved to manage their pace and regain control.

The very next second, Kai immediately dove into the pits.

If you’re telling me that wasn’t deliberate, you’ve got to be kidding me!

Losing his composure for a brief, fleeting moment, Wolff actually let out a short, incredulous laugh. For years, he and Horner had been engaged in endless, vicious covert warfare. Intense psychological games played out constantly, both on and off the track. But now, this young kid Kai had suddenly stepped onto the battlefield. Who exactly was his master in the dark arts of psychological warfare? It looked so casual, so incredibly simple on the surface, yet every single move was a meticulously calculated link in a devastating chain.

Clearly, Binotto didn’t possess this level of cunning capability. Arrivabene certainly didn’t either. Could it actually be the ghost of Marchionne?

So, did this imply that the paddock was about to become incredibly, phenomenally chaotic and entertaining once again?

Lap 24. Kai pits!

With that, every single driver on the grid had successfully completed at least one pit stop. As the absolute final driver to enter the pit lane, Kai had finally concluded his first stint—

White Hard tires.

No suspense. No surprises. At least regarding actual tire strategy, Ferrari wasn’t playing any complex tricks. Leclerc and Kai had simply followed the prevailing trend. They were both running the Hard compound.

And then.

The boiling, fanatic gaze of the entire venue violently converged, acting exactly like a massive, blinding spotlight. It locked entirely, hermetically onto the pit exit lane, obsessively watching the impending climax unfold.

The Overcut. Was it going to be a success, or a failure?

In reality, Croft had already provided the analysis. Mercedes-Benz’s response had been incredibly fast and highly efficient. The probability of the overcut actually succeeding was practically zero. But what if? What if?

Under the intense, suffocated scrutiny of tens of thousands of eyes, everyone held their breath—

The Number 44 car flashed past the pit exit lane.

The Number 77 car flashed past the pit exit lane.

Exactly 2.7 seconds later, the Number 22 car accelerated out of the pit lane, officially rejoining the track.

The brutal reality was that the gap hadn’t just failed to shrink; it had actually expanded slightly. Hamilton and Bottas’s aggressive, flat-out push over the previous five laps had undeniably, absolutely not been a joke. They had managed to carve out a slight, noticeable advantage on every single lap. They had genuinely, forcefully demonstrated to Ferrari:

In the face of absolute, overwhelming strength, petty schemes and cheap parlor tricks are fundamentally worthless.

The ultimate proof?

The Number 16 car was rapidly approaching!

Exactly 0.877 seconds later, the Number 16 car tucked firmly in behind the Number 22 car as they plunged into Turn 1. Firmly inside the DRS window!

When Leclerc pitted early on Lap 17, he was trailing Hamilton but leading Bottas. Now, the gap between Leclerc and Bottas had expanded massively, ballooning to nearly four full seconds. It was a massive, virtually insurmountable chasm.

The harsh reality was undeniable: a Ferrari operating on cold tires was fundamentally, entirely incapable of keeping pace with the rhythm of a Mercedes-Benz. Furthermore, Ferrari desperately needed to focus on managing their tires for the grueling long-run stint ahead.

At this exact moment, there was absolutely no time to mourn Kai’s failed attempt to overcut Mercedes-Benz. Because Kai was currently staring down the barrel of a ferocious, aggressively charging teammate—

0.877 seconds!

Thrilling! Intense!

So, Kai had failed to overcut Mercedes-Benz, but he had ironically managed to overcut his own teammate! The highly anticipated ”Kai VS. Leclerc” showdown was on a hair-trigger, ready to detonate!

The air instantly snapped tight.

The spectators might have been disappointed that they didn’t get to witness Kai engage in a spectacular, 1v2 battle against the two Mercedes cars, but they were about to witness a vicious, close-quarters dogfight between the two Ferraris!

GASP! A massive, collective gasp echoed through the crowd.

So, what happens now? Will Kai and Leclerc execute another position swap? Will Leclerc revert to his old tricks and launch a desperate, all-out assault on Mercedes-Benz? Is Leclerc genuinely, actually running a three—or even four-stop strategy?!

Or... has Ferrari already issued a strict, non-negotiable team order explicitly forbidding Leclerc from attacking Kai?

In the span of a lightning flash, Leclerc was absolutely, 100% focused. His instincts were screaming; he was desperately hunting for the perfect opportunity to launch a devastating attack.

Clearly, Kai possessed the exact same mindset. From the very moment he crossed the pit lane speed limit line, his entire racing line had been meticulously laid out specifically for defense.

Under normal, conventional circumstances, the classic ”Out-In-Out” trajectory was the absolutely correct, textbook method for attacking Turn 1. As Kai exited the pit lane, he naturally found himself positioned on the absolute inside line. Consequently, Leclerc, charging rapidly from behind, inherently possessed the outside line. Leclerc held a massive advantage regarding the optimal racing line, and crucially, he possessed a massive, undeniable advantage in tire temperature.

However, Kai’s entire defensive trajectory was incredibly, flawlessly meticulous. Looking at the angle of the car’s nose, it was glaringly obvious: he deliberately, actively veered slightly further out toward the left side of the track.

By executing this specific maneuver, without needing to make any sudden, erratic steering corrections, he effectively squeezed the available racing space, violently forcing Leclerc’s racing line even further to the outside.

It’s highly important to note a crucial detail here: 0.877 seconds. On paper, it technically signifies being within DRS range. But on the massive main straight of the Shanghai circuit, the actual, physical distance absolutely does not mean they are bumper-to-bumper. To pull alongside Kai, Leclerc would be forced to execute an incredibly extreme, do-or-die late-braking maneuver. He would have to push the car far beyond its absolute physical limit, risking a catastrophic understeer slide just to potentially run side-by-side.

But obviously, Kai was already fully prepared. Beyond his elite offensive capabilities, he was now showcasing an unparalleled, world-class defensive awareness.

Look.

The braking point for the Number 22 car remained flawlessly, surgically precise. He wasn’t rattled or intimidated in the slightest by the aggressive impact of his teammate’s charge. His perfectly judged braking allowed the car to elegantly, lightly kiss the apex. The disastrously poor mechanical grip inherent to the cold Hard tires didn’t seem to affect him at all. This was because Kai didn’t attempt to execute a sharp, rapid turn to meticulously trace the arc of the corner. Instead, he utilized the natural, inevitable understeer generated by the cold tires. He deliberately allowed the nose of the car to slice directly through the apex and push wide, carrying the momentum all the way to the outer arc of the corner exit.

Immediately following that: Throttle! Steering!

His delicate, hyper-precise inputs resembled Michelangelo wielding a paintbrush. He lightly, elegantly sketched the parabolic arc of the corner. Silky smooth, flowing seamlessly and effortlessly straight into Turn 2.

It was pure, unadulterated visual ecstasy.

VROOM— VROOM-VROOM-VROOM—

Leclerc didn’t even need visual confirmation. The unbroken, continuous rhythm of the engine roar echoing ahead of him provided the answer before he even saw it. He had absolutely zero opportunity. None whatsoever.

If he wanted to execute a successful overtake, a 0.8-second gap simply wasn’t enough. He absolutely had to close that gap down to the 0.3 or 0.4-second range.

And more importantly, Kai was fully prepared for him!

Everything unfolded exactly as Leclerc had anticipated. Even though his instincts were screaming at him to attack and he desperately tried to seize an opening, Kai’s flawless, impenetrable defense violently snuffed out any hope. Even before Leclerc could mount a remotely credible attack, Kai had cleanly and decisively shut the door, definitively concluding the brief skirmish.

By the time they exited Turn 4 and accelerated onto the straight, the gap between the two Ferraris had already widened to 1.018 seconds.

The sparks flared brilliantly for a fleeting second, only to vanish instantly into the night sky. From Mercedes-Benz to Ferrari, even though genuine, wheel-to-wheel combat never actually materialized, the suffocating tension continued to spread relentlessly.

In a brief, heart-stopping moment, the sparks had detonated and instantly faded. From Mercedes-Benz to Ferrari, the intense, high-stakes warfare occurring both on and off the track was continuously unfolding. Following a fierce, brutal struggle for supremacy, Mercedes-Benz had ultimately successfully withstood Ferrari’s relentless barrage of attacks. Hamilton and Bottas continued to dominate the Shanghai Grand Prix.

Order had been successfully restored to the universe.

However, true, seasoned industry insiders could see the reality with a single glance: Mercedes-Benz still hadn’t managed to completely escape Ferrari’s menacing shadow. Exactly how steep of a price had they paid to maintain that 2.7-second gap between Bottas and Kai? That was the massive, unpredictable unknown variable currently lurking dangerously beneath the surface, completely outside of Mercedes-Benz’s control.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Ferrari was going to do absolutely everything in their power to aggressively provoke and exploit that ”unknown variable.” They were going to push Mercedes-Benz’s long-run tire management capabilities to the absolute, breaking limit.

If the professionals could see it, Wolff naturally saw it too. He had already accurately predicted Kai’s next move—

One crucial detail: Since Kai hadn’t smoothly yielded his position to allow Leclerc to launch a full-scale assault on Bottas... and considering that over the past few laps, Hamilton and Bottas had significantly elevated their pace while Leclerc had failed to match them (or rather, lacked the capability to do so)... it meant Ferrari was definitely not planning to repeat their strategy from the first variable phase.

Therefore, if Ferrari was planning to launch an attack against Mercedes-Benz, the spearhead was absolutely guaranteed to be Kai.

This time, Mercedes-Benz was fully prepared. They absolutely would not fall for the bait. The catastrophic mistakes of the first variable phase would not be repeated. The exact same cheap parlor trick would not work twice.

”Maintain your rhythm. Do not worry about what Kai is doing. Focus entirely on our own race.”

Whether it was Hamilton or Bottas, the absolute, most critical priority for Mercedes-Benz right now was maintaining a stable rhythm and violently protecting their tires.

In a very short span of time, Wolff had meticulously organized his thoughts. He had analyzed the cause and effect and completely deciphered the situation.

But clearly, someone else didn’t share his perspective.

”What happens if Kai catches up again?” Bottas asked over the radio.

Vowles replied calmly, ”We will deal with it when it happens.”

Bottas pressed the issue. ”We all know perfectly well he’s not just going to obediently sit back there. So, what exactly do you expect me to do? Do you want me to defend against him with everything I have? You should know by now that when facing him, simply playing defense isn’t going to solve the problem, right? I need to be prepared. Psychologically prepared, and physically prepared.”

Vowles: ... ”Valtteri, we will deal with it when it happens.”

Bottas sighed. ”Fine.” He paused for a single second. ”I’m just pointing out that they have been actively dictating the initiative all day. They are incredibly aggressive. We absolutely must prepare in advance and formulate a concrete counter-strategy. Otherwise, moving into the third variable phase, we might...”

Blah, blah, blah.

Over the radio, Bottas continued to chatter incessantly. He ultimately couldn’t contain his anxiety. He constantly talked in circles, dropping blatant hints and subtle suggestions, desperately trying to gauge the pit wall’s true reaction. But this time, he received absolutely zero response. It was just the sound of his own voice echoing in the void, exactly like screaming into an empty canyon. Yet, even the deafening silence failed to shut him up.

However, this time, Bottas was absolutely correct—

It only took three short laps. Kai had returned with a vengeance.

The dynamics of the second variable phase were slightly different. Although the fuel loads were lighter, the thick, heavy cloud cover looming over the Shanghai circuit stubbornly refused to dissipate. The ambient temperature, instead of rising, had actually dropped slightly. The track surface temperature had cooled even further. For every single car currently operating on the White Hard tires, generating adequate mechanical grip presented a significantly more severe, agonizing challenge.

Factoring in the lighter fuel load against the colder track temperatures... the current fastest lap times were remaining largely consistent with the times set during the first variable phase. In fact, localized, subtle shifts in wind direction were actively triggering accelerated tire degradation. Consequently, several cars were consciously, actively managing their pace, resulting in lap times that were actually slightly slower than before.

To the average, casual spectator, it was physically impossible to discern a difference of a mere tenth of a second with the naked eye. This created the distinct, misleading visual illusion that the cars were maintaining the exact same, monotonous rhythm from the first phase straight through the second. It felt exactly like a chronic insomniac staring blankly at a slowly, evenly rotating spiral. It was genuinely, profoundly sleep-inducing.

However, for Kai, this was actually a massive advantage—

When the track temperature is low, there is zero grip. When the track temperature is high, the tire degradation is horrific.

In Bahrain, the scorching heat was the primary catalyst for the catastrophic ”LiCo” nightmare. But here and now? Although the complete lack of grip on cold tires was undeniably frustrating and deeply agonizing, viewing the situation from an alternative perspective revealed a hidden opportunity. The cooler temperatures dramatically extended the lifespan of the SF90’s tires over a long stint, successfully generating significantly more tactical opportunities.

The SF90’s fatal flaw was this: On cold tires, it possessed absolutely zero grip. The window required to bring the tires up to their optimal operating temperature was agonizingly slow. Then, when it finally managed to enter that optimal window... the window itself was terrifyingly brief. After being pushed hard a couple of times, it simply couldn’t endure the strain. And then... there was no ”then.” The performance simply fell off a sheer cliff and completely collapsed.

That was the brutal, unvarnished reality.

Just moments ago, Leclerc had experienced exactly that. He had expended a massive, grueling amount of effort just to coax the tires into their operating window. Yet, his mechanical grip through the low and medium-speed corners remained wildly inconsistent and deeply unpredictable.

This was exactly the specific puzzle Kai had spent the entire Shanghai Grand Prix weekend obsessively analyzing: How do we properly utilize these tires?

How do you handle them when they’re cold? How do you maintain stability once they enter the operating window? And crucially, how do you prevent a total rhythm collapse before the catastrophic cliff-drop degradation hits?

The Hard tire was undeniably a massive headache. For the first three laps after exiting the pit lane, Kai methodically, step-by-step, established his rhythm. It wasn’t blindingly fast, but it was incredibly steady and progressive—

1:38.048.

1:37.975.

1:37.812.

It wasn’t particularly fast. Compared to the final few laps of the first variable phase, it was actually slightly slower. But right now, Hamilton and Bottas were also consciously, actively managing their pace. Kai’s single-lap pace advantage instantly became glaringly apparent. Step by agonizingly careful step, neither rushed nor impatient, he slowly but surely initiated his second wave of assaults.

This time, Bottas remained hyper-vigilant. He noticed the movement behind him incredibly early. He didn’t even need Kai to breach the DRS window before his internal alarm bells started screaming.

After confirming Kai’s single-lap times with the pit wall, Bottas instantly realized the grim reality: In a minimum of three laps, or a maximum of five laps, Kai was going to be right on his gearbox.

”I need a concrete answer. I absolutely do not want to be frantically scrambling to figure out what to do after Kai is already inside my DRS zone.”

”I warned you all earlier. He is absolutely not going to give up easily.”

However, while he was aggressively questioning the pit wall, Bottas had already subtly elevated his own single-lap pace. He absolutely, definitively refused to repeat the humiliating mistakes of the past.

A single action triggered a massive chain reaction.

Hamilton immediately, hyper-sensitively detected the anomaly. He keyed his radio, demanding to know exactly what the hell Bottas, running behind him, thought he was doing.

Even though Bono repeatedly urged Hamilton to remain patient and wait a little longer... Hamilton was incredibly, unusually tense at the Shanghai Grand Prix today. It was completely unlike his normal demeanor. First Kai, then Bottas. The aggressive, hungry ”23-year-old Lewis” slumbering deep within his soul had been violently awakened. His usual, icy composure was entirely gone.

Hamilton also slightly elevated his pace, aggressively re-establishing his dominant lead.

Seeing this, Bottas’s determination to elevate his own pace became even more ironclad. He was desperately trying to close the gap to Hamilton.

Witnessing this disastrous cascade, Bono repeatedly, frantically pleaded with Hamilton to calm down. But Hamilton wasn’t buying it for a second. ”You need to be telling that to Valtteri, not me!”

Today wasn’t the first time Bottas had explicitly demonstrated his burning ambition to overtake Hamilton, and he had actively backed it up with concrete action. How could Hamilton possibly trust him?

Vowles immediately grasped the critical severity of the situation. ”Valtteri, it’s James. Maintain your rhythm. I repeat, maintain your rhythm.”

Bottas fired back defensively. ”I am maintaining my rhythm!” His single-lap pace had only increased by a microscopic fraction! They really needed to be analyzing Hamilton’s pace instead!

Vowles’ voice was sharp and commanding. ”Valtteri, you know exactly what I mean. Kai is absolutely not going to attack. We’ve literally already lived through this exact scenario once today. Ferrari does not possess the inherent capability to launch a sustained attack. Kai’s aggressive posture is entirely a bluff. It’s empty bravado. He absolutely will not risk destroying his tires to launch a genuine offensive. We absolutely do not need to panic and destroy our own rhythm in response.”

Bottas wasn’t convinced. ”And what if he does launch an attack?”

Vowles: ...

Absolute chaos. Exactly like a collapsing row of dominoes.

From the exact moment Hamilton ruthlessly overtook Bottas off the starting line, the very first domino had already fallen. Endlessly brewing, endlessly accumulating, it had finally arrived at this exact moment, triggering a massive, total detonation—

Mercedes-Benz had never, in their wildest nightmares, anticipated that the hidden, festering threat of internal team rivalry would violently explode at this specific, critical juncture.

BUT!

There was a crucial, glaring variable here: Ferrari had absolutely no way of predicting that Hamilton was going to overtake Bottas off the starting line. Because even Toto Wolff was completely ignorant of that fact. So, how on earth had Ferrari managed to meticulously lay out this psychological trap in advance? Or was it possible that everything currently unfolding was entirely the result of brilliant, on-the-fly improvisation, effortlessly riding the chaotic currents of the race?

Binotto remained completely silent. He meticulously observed the frantic activity on the Mercedes-Benz pit wall. Even though they obviously couldn’t intercept their rival’s radio communications, and the opposing pit wall was doing everything in their power to project an aura of calm and intense focus... the thick, undeniable aura of chaos and anxiety saturating the air inevitably leaked out, revealing crucial clues.

Binotto immediately signaled Borreipaire.

Kai was instantly informed of the internal chaos currently ripping Mercedes-Benz apart. Hearing the news, he wasn’t surprised in the slightest. The tension between Hamilton and Bottas had genuinely been hovering right on the absolute edge of overflowing. It was exactly like a glass filled to the absolute brim with water. The slightest jostle, or a single extra drop, and the delicate equilibrium would shatter completely.

So. Right now, he needed to add fuel to the fire. He needed to lend Bottas a helping hand.

However, he couldn’t afford to be impatient. He absolutely could not allow his opponent’s chaotic rhythm to shatter his own carefully managed pace. He still needed to meticulously execute the second phase of his strategy according to his own established cadence.

Operating in a state of absolute, hyper-focused concentration, blood boiling with adrenaline, the situation unfolded slightly smoother than he had anticipated. It only took Kai exactly two laps—and a tiny, almost accidental surge of pure inspiration—to execute an absolutely flawless, magnificent lap.

1:36.983.

”KAI! He shatters the fastest lap record again!”

”For the very first time in this entire race, a driver has broken through the 37-second barrier and officially entered the 1:36 bracket!”

A single stone triggers a thousand ripples. All the furious debates, the internal bickering, and the chaotic panic gripping the Mercedes-Benz pit wall were instantly, violently silenced. The garage plunged into an absolute, deathly stillness. The only sound they could clearly hear was the home crowd in the main grandstands erupting with unbelievable, fanatical passion. The earth-shattering roar of their cheers crashed down like a torrential avalanche, instantly drowning the entire pit lane.

It was so incredibly hot, it felt as though it was physically burning their skin.
