F1: The Speed Legend

Nicholas was currently watching the video.

Handsome, effortless, eyes bright, and a smile playing on his lips. His genuine, passionate demeanor translated perfectly into words. He looked directly into the lens as if making eye contact with every single viewer. Heart to heart, his sincerity pierced through the screen and landed directly in the hands of the Tifosi. The raw power embedded in his written words had instantly been injected with vibrant life.

This was the unique power of video.

Unlike plain text, the emotions conveyed through a person’s eyes, tone, expressions, gestures, and posture were intensely infectious, striking straight at the heart. It allowed every single viewer to feel the direct, overwhelming force radiating from the screen.

Clearly, this wasn’t the first time Nicholas had watched it. In fact, he had been standing right there in the room when it was recorded. Since it was finalized, Nicholas had watched it over and over again. Honestly, he had lost count of how many times he had replayed it, yet he never grew tired of it.

Now, Nicholas fully grasped Kai’s intent—

It was a blockbuster. A declaration. A flag planted firmly in the ground.

This single video didn’t just showcase Kai’s convictions and ambitions; it served as a highly visible, public debut, aggressively asserting his presence.

The immense energy accumulated since his historic Drivers’ World Championship victory had been detonated by a single, paddock-shattering contract, instantly pushing his momentum to the absolute zenith.

A brand-new, distinct brand image had instantly emerged. Moving forward, the newly assembled social media team would work in perfect synchronization with Kai to cultivate these accounts. Step by step, they would build his influence and drawing power, paving the road for Kai to become a singular, transcendent superstar. Not just transcending Ferrari, but transcending the entire paddock, becoming an entity larger than Formula 1 itself.

Unwilling to merely be the ’face of F1’ like Lewis Hamilton, they were preparing to build upon Hamilton’s foundation, pushing significantly further to explore entirely unknown, unprecedented territory.

For this, Nicholas felt genuine, profound admiration.

In truth, when they first met two years ago, Nicholas had already realized it: Sergio Marchionne and Jean Todt had perceived a unique quality in this young man—something Nicholas couldn’t fully see at the time, but could undeniably feel. That realization had ultimately pushed him off the fence, leading him to take the leap of faith that became the defining turning point of his career.

Even so, seeing Kai’s continuous growth and metamorphosis now still left Nicholas in awe. The young man in that video... was radiating a blinding, incandescent light.

Like the sun itself. It made you instinctively long to draw closer, to follow it. Was this how Icarus felt?

And then—

”Aye, aye!”

”Ready when you are!”

”CAPTAIN AHHHHHHHH!”

”Thank God Elkann finally stopped acting like an idiot.”

”Thank you, Captain! As long as you never abandon us, we will follow you forever.”

”Captain, you will never walk alone!”

The internet boiled over. A deafening cacophony of voices erupted, and the entire world began to spin on its axis.

Kai’s closing question in the video—”So, are you ready?”—was a formal invitation. And who could possibly refuse an invitation from Kai?

Consequently, millions of fans screamed their answers with pounding hearts and boiling blood. They couldn’t wait to throw their hands in the air, itching for action, eager to follow in his exact footsteps.

These fanatical Tifosi were using their actions to demonstrate their absolute resolve. They were willing to follow Kai. They were ready to keep fighting. Over mountains and through raging fires, they would fight to the bitter end. Even if it meant marching through a sea of blades or being ground to dust, they would not hesitate. The chaotic, roaring responses tripped over each other, desperately trying to be heard.

Then, amidst this massive tidal wave, Rosanna Preston was the first to solidify the rallying cry—

”Aye, Captain. #22”

To Preston, it was the most natural response in the world. ”Captain” applied equally to a team leader and a ship’s commander. In this specific context, Aye was the most perfect, fitting acknowledgment. However, worried that casual onlookers might be confused or miss the reference, she added the #22 hashtag to precisely anchor the context.

Preston was the first, but she never could have imagined the sheer volume of the second, third, and millions of subsequent replies that swarmed in. In the blink of an eye, the phrase spread with the unstoppable force of a prairie fire. Netizens who had previously been shouting their own disjointed praises saw the format and immediately fell into line. Using copy-and-paste, the exact same reply carpet-bombed every single corner of the internet.

It wasn’t just Twitter. Weibo, Instagram, Facebook, and every other social media platform—not a single one was spared. The phrase provided absolute, blanket coverage, completely saturating the digital landscape.

In just a few short hours, timelines everywhere were choked with quotes and replies to Kai’s video, overwhelmingly blanketing every conceivable digital space.

Before anyone even had time to catch their breath, Kai’s original post effortlessly smashed past 500,000 retweets. The ’likes’ strapped themselves to a rocket, shattering the two-million mark, utterly obliterating the highest-engagement posts ever recorded by the official F1 accounts. In a single stroke, Kai created a brand-new milestone in F1 history. His post became the most liked, retweeted, and commented-on piece of content in the history of Instagram, Twitter, and Weibo for anything related to the sport. He broke through the digital barriers; his crossover appeal had annihilated the ceiling.

The #22 hashtag effortlessly and unsurprisingly claimed the absolute number one spot on global trending lists.

The smile on Anya Taylor-Joy’s lips bloomed completely. As expected, Kai was Kai. He was currently imbuing the Number 22 with profound, unprecedented meaning.

Just imagine if Kai had changed his number and raced with Number 1. Sure, everyone would know he was the defending champion, but the inherent, unique value of his very existence would have been lost.

This was a hurricane, without a shadow of a doubt. As it unfolded, people already understood that this storm was sweeping across the entire paddock. Yet, they still failed to fully grasp that the ultimate impact of this storm would far exceed their wildest imaginations. Kai, functioning simultaneously as a leader and a global brand, was establishing an unparalleled, supreme status on a global scale.

From this exact moment forward, Number 22 would never again be just the number 22. Similarly, F1 would never again be the old F1.

As is the case with countless historic moments, the people living directly through the event rarely feel the true, crushing weight of history as it happens. It’s only when time has passed, when the dust has settled and the answers have surfaced, that people look back, re-examine their memories, and suddenly realize: ’Yes, that was the exact moment everything changed.’

That was exactly what was happening right now.

However, objectively speaking, the paddock had already rolled out the red carpet to welcome this storm. They simply hadn’t anticipated that the subsequent fallout would be a continuous string of explosive detonations. For now, the early contract extension between Ferrari and Kai had already detonated the paddock, unleashing massive tidal waves and triggering a relentless chain reaction.

After all, everything Ferrari was doing was part of a coordinated master plan—

Charles Leclerc’s signing. Maurizio Arrivabene’s departure. Mattia Binotto’s promotion. Alfa Romeo’s title sponsorship of Sauber.

Behind these seemingly disconnected decisions, an invisible thread linked them all together, and that thread ultimately converged entirely upon Kai.

Kai and Leclerc—two brilliant, vibrant young prodigies—forming a powerful alliance. Binotto’s technical team seemingly prepared to finally shatter the shackles of tradition, keep pace with the modern era, and embrace radical innovation. The warring factions within the board of directors finally reaching a consensus, shaking hands, and bringing an end to over six months of paralyzing chaos and turmoil. Elkann, flush with the energy of a new leader, seemingly finding his direction amidst his burning ambition and cold reality, sharpening his knives and preparing to forge a brand new era.

All of it. Every single piece.

The immense hope brought forth by a single Drivers’ World Championship trophy had been completely unlocked by Kai, the leader of this new generation. Ferrari had finally, solidly united. They were radiating vibrant vitality, twisting their collective strength into a single, unbreakable rope, and preparing to launch a full-scale assault on the Constructors’ World Championship. They were fully prepared.

Having finally achieved a milestone breakthrough after a decade-long drought and returning to the championship throne, Ferrari didn’t just sit back and bask in the glory of a single successful season. Instead, they took a machete to their own operations, ruthlessly cutting away the rotting, dead weight within the team, and continued marching aggressively down the path of reform.

A Ferrari operating like this could not be ignored by anyone!

Even if one couldn’t fully foresee the profound, long-term impact on the paddock or the exact trajectory of Kai’s continuing ascent, the immediate, glaring challenge presented by Ferrari was impossible to miss.

The entire paddock experienced an earthquake-level chain reaction. Even the smaller, midfield teams weren’t spared.

After all, the paddock was a very small, incredibly insular world. Even the slightest rustle of grass could trigger a massive domino effect, let alone the earth-shattering, foundational moves being made by an apex predator like Ferrari.

Of course, the first to bear the brunt of the impact were still the other top-tier teams, standing right on the front lines, feeling the full force of the shockwave. Especially—

Mercedes-Benz.

...

Following the conclusion of the season, the off-season had immediately descended into chaos. The paddock had long anticipated that the winter would be turbulent, and the ’Big Three’ teams were no exception.

However, no one in the paddock could have predicted that Mercedes-Benz would experience this specific kind of off-season—

Turmoil, chaos, deafening noise, and deep unease.

It was true that Hamilton’s seemingly guaranteed Drivers’ World Championship had been brutally snatched from his jaws by Kai, leaving the entire paddock stunned. But Mercedes-Benz had still smoothly and securely locked down the Constructors’ World Championship. They remained the ultimate target every other team on the grid was desperately trying to dethrone.

Overall, Mercedes-Benz was still the most stable, mature, and complete organization in the paddock.

Two years prior, when Nico Rosberg secured the Drivers’ World Championship and then promptly vanished into the sunset without looking back, Mercedes-Benz had briefly been plunged into chaos.

But Toto Wolff, acting as the team’s unshakable anchor, had rapidly stabilized the situation. Valtteri Bottas, hastily borrowed from Williams, was originally intended to just be a stopgap substitute. Yet, he displayed an unbelievable level of stability and strength in the Number Two driver role, seamlessly transforming into Wolff’s most reliable and compliant chess piece.

They boasted a brilliant, highly unified technical team, backed by the incredibly stable driver pairing of Hamilton and Bottas. Their management tier was equally overflowing with top-tier talent.

Despite surviving the turbulence of Rosberg’s betrayal, Mercedes-Benz hadn’t fractured; they had actually grown stronger. Free from toxic internal team rivalries, the competitive dynamic between Hamilton and Bottas was completely under control. They had truly established themselves as the absolute ceiling of the paddock, forging an undeniable dynasty.

To outsiders, it seemed Mercedes-Benz should simply focus on themselves, continue improving, and operate like true front-runners, leaving their competitors completely in the dust.

Wolff, however, didn’t see it that way. In his view, one must always remain vigilant in times of peace. Becoming complacent and self-satisfied with the status quo was the first step on the road to decline. The paddock was like a boat sailing against the current; if you weren’t moving forward, you were falling behind. Even if Mercedes was miles ahead, their predatory rivals wouldn’t just sit back and let them win—

Hamilton losing his fifth Drivers’ World Championship was the bloody, undeniable proof staring them right in the face.

Clearly, Wolff had absolutely no desire to experience that situation ever again. The 2019 season could not be allowed to repeat the mistakes of 2018.

This off-season, Wolff had personally directed a massive theatrical production.

On one hand, he genuinely, desperately wanted to secure Kai. He firmly believed that Kai’s transcendental talent could only be truly maximized within the Mercedes-Benz ecosystem.

On the other hand, his aggressive pursuit also served as a highly effective smokescreen and disruption tactic. It put massive pressure on Ferrari and simultaneously attempted to scramble Kai’s own judgment.

However, Wolff hadn’t anticipated that the situation would spiral so violently out of control. Kai’s extreme difficulty as a negotiator, the underlying internal divisions within Mercedes-Benz itself, and Elkann’s unexpected, high-stakes gamble had all tangled together into a boiling, chaotic mess. Ultimately, Wolff had dropped a massive rock squarely on his own foot.

While Ferrari had united from top to bottom, twisting into a single, unbreakable rope, Mercedes-Benz found themselves shaken to their core, spinning in disoriented circles.

But Mercedes-Benz hadn’t built a dynasty in the turbo-hybrid era purely by accident. And within that dynasty, Toto Wolff undeniably played a paramount role.

After realizing he had made a miscalculation, Wolff experienced a brief moment of shock and frustration. But he recovered instantly. He stopped wasting mental energy on Ferrari, pulled all his attention back, and hyper-focused entirely on executing Mercedes-Benz’s own overarching master plan.

After all, from the very beginning, contacting Kai was merely a side quest. If it succeeded, fantastic. If it failed, it wouldn’t critically damage their primary strategic layout.

Now, it was time to clear away the distractions.

Wolff once again displayed his brutal, decisive executive ability. Within just a few days, he had firmly re-established their footing, and the entire Mercedes-Benz apparatus was back on track.

First, he quickly finalized a contract extension with Valtteri Bottas. It was still just a one-year deal. Wolff constantly maintained an atmosphere of crisis, refusing to grant Bottas the security of a long-term commitment. It was a one-year rolling contract. Yet again, Bottas didn’t put up a fight—or rather, after a brief, futile resistance, he quietly accepted his reality.

And so, Hamilton and Bottas would continue their partnership, representing Mercedes-Benz in the 2019 season.

Second, he continued to aggressively push the negotiations between Racing Point and Sebastian Vettel. Wolff wasn’t just acting as a casual middleman; he was playing a fundamentally critical, active role in making the deal happen.

While finalizing multiple agreements with Racing Point on one front, he maintained intense, close communication with Vettel on the other.

Then, the next massive, paddock-shaking bombshell dropped.

Four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel officially transferred to Racing Point. The two parties agreed to a three-year contract. Vettel would partner with Lance Stroll for the upcoming season.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

After Ferrari officially signed Leclerc, it became an accepted consensus within the paddock that Vettel was definitively leaving. The prevailing assumption was that Vettel had actually rejected Ferrari. The entire motorsport world was incredibly curious about the four-time World Champion’s next move, leading to endless speculation and wild rumors.

It was glaringly obvious that Vettel wasn’t preparing to coast into retirement like Kimi Räikkönen or Fernando Alonso. He was still determined to fight for championships. That meant his options were incredibly limited.

The final result? Racing Point?

The entire paddock gasped in collective shock.

However, Wolff wasn’t concerned with the ensuing chain reactions or the public bewilderment. He was simultaneously pushing forward multiple strategic initiatives, executing a comprehensive, multi-layered layout to secure absolute dominance in the broader competitive landscape.

Third, he further solidified Mercedes’ collaborative relationship with Williams. George Russell, the newly crowned F2 Champion, officially joined Williams, partnering with Sergio Perez for the upcoming season.

A sudden, sharp twist! Since the summer break, Russell’s name had been inextricably linked to a seat at Mercedes-Benz. Yet, in the end, he landed at Williams.

It wasn’t exactly shocking, but it was certainly surprising.

The entire paddock had believed Russell might follow the explosive trajectory set by Kai, vaulting directly into a top-tier Mercedes seat and fully unleashing a massive youth movement.

But looking at the final outcome, Wolff had ultimately chosen experience and stability. More importantly, he had chosen Bottas’s obedient, compliant nature to execute their on-track tactical strategies. That was the critical, missing puzzle piece Mercedes needed to secure the Constructors’ World Championship.

Russell, much like Verstappen when he first entered the paddock through Toro Rosso, would first have to prove his mettle at Williams.

Everything played out exactly as Kai had predicted—

Don’t listen to the rhetoric; watch the actions.

On the surface, Wolff whispered sweet nothings and promised the moon and the stars. His silver tongue could weave a breathtaking tapestry of lies, making it incredibly easy for anyone to fall under his spell.

But in reality, Wolff maintained a deep, abiding suspicion and anxiety regarding young drivers. In critical, life-or-death moments, he simply could not bring himself to trust youth.

It was true for Verstappen, and it was true for Kai. Wolff possessed ambition and vision, but he always lacked the raw, final ounce of ruthless courage required to actually pull the trigger.

Missing an opportunity once is an accident. Missing it twice is a coincidence. But missing it three, four, five times? That’s a pattern. It’s an inevitability.

The exact same thing applied to Russell.

In truth, the momentum, the atmosphere, and the public narrative had all been perfectly set up. Russell had repeatedly demonstrated his absolute loyalty, and his raw talent on the track was undeniable. If Wolff had signed Russell as the Number Two driver, all the necessary conditions were already in place. Yet, Wolff had still chosen Bottas.

This single chess move perfectly encapsulated Wolff’s core philosophy: defensive offense.

As the ultimate front-runner in the paddock, Wolff almost always opted for defense. He prioritized absolute stability, meticulously balancing the entire board, and proactively shoving all the risks and crises onto his competitors.

From Mercedes-Benz to Racing Point, and finally to Williams. Layer by layer, progressing steadily, executing a comprehensive layout. Wolff had successfully established a tiered, hierarchical system within the paddock. He now maintained significant coverage and influence over the top-tier, midfield, and backmarker battles, securing total, overarching control across multiple levels of competition.

This was what true, absolute control of the board looked like.

While Elkann had focused 100% of his attention entirely on Kai, causing the entire Ferrari organization to orbit frantically around a single driver, Wolff had cleverly exploited the chaos and turmoil within the paddock. He capitalized on the situation, riding the current, and seamlessly brought massive chunks of the grid under his direct surveillance and control, clearing all his strategic pathways.

As a Team Principal and as a CEO, Wolff repeatedly demonstrated the elite operational capabilities of a master businessman. His razor-sharp instincts, his terrifying computational power, and his audacity to orchestrate massive strategic maneuvers proved he was a true leader. A true titan—

It was under his precise leadership that Mercedes-Benz had meticulously, step-by-step, forged a dynasty.

For years, people had constantly claimed that Mercedes-Benz’s dynasty was entirely due to the brilliance of their technical team, simply because they had designed the only true ’rocket ship’ on the grid.

And Wolff?

As Horner frequently pointed out, Wolff was just a businessman. He supposedly knew absolutely nothing about engineering or mechanics. During a race, every other Team Principal stood out on the pit wall. Even a CEO like Zak Brown spent the entire race observing from the front lines. Wolff, however, sat comfortably back inside the garage.

His technical capabilities were seemingly non-existent.

Clearly, people were looking through a fog of bias, completely underestimating Wolff’s true power. The constant mocking and sarcastic jabs from his old rival, Horner, only added fuel to the fire, causing casual fans to completely misjudge him.

In reality, as a top-tier businessman, he possessed a uniquely lethal perspective. Wolff’s ability to strategize, manipulate human psychology, and orchestrate massive, complex layouts was absolutely unrivaled in the paddock. Among the current crop of Team Principals, only Horner was capable of matching Wolff’s rhythm. Everyone else was simply a step behind.

This off-season, the chaos and turmoil within Mercedes-Benz had been real. Wolff’s strategy briefly derailing had been a fact. But in the critical moment, Wolff had once again demonstrated his ruthless, decisive ability to reclaim total control. Far away from the spotlight, he took a machete to the tangled mess and rapidly stabilized the situation.

Back on track. Comprehensive layout complete. Rhythm adjusted. Preparing for a massive, aggressive assault.

While the rest of the paddock was still being violently tossed around in the hurricane caused by Ferrari’s blockbuster renewal of Kai, Mercedes-Benz, under Wolff’s leadership, had already completed their reorganization and were fully prepared for war—

Their target: The Championships!

A sixth consecutive Constructors’ World Championship! And returning Lewis Hamilton to the Drivers’ World Championship throne to continue making history!

For next season, the ’secret weapon’ that was Kai had been fully exposed. Mercedes-Benz would not repeat the mistakes they made this year. Both the team and Wolff were fully loaded and ready to fire. The reign of the Silver Dynasty in the paddock was far, far from over.

The paddock was still, fundamentally, the same paddock operating under the massive, suffocating shadow of Mercedes-Benz.

If Wolff’s style was defensive offense, then what about Horner?

Hyper-aggressive offense. Passionate, volatile, and swinging for the fences. The degenerate gambler in his bones was constantly itching for action. The moment an opportunity presented itself, he would launch a full-scale, all-out assault without a second of hesitation. And if an opportunity didn’t exist? He would forcibly manufacture one and attack anyway. Regardless of the setting or the circumstances, he was perpetually making massive, high-stakes gambles. It was like he was constantly playing with fire.

Deep in his soul, Horner firmly believed that the audacity and courage to take massive risks was the true hallmark of a champion.

Call him a gambler, call him a lunatic, but without a doubt, Horner flatly refused to play by the established rules. He utterly despised the pomp and circumstance peddled by Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari—all their talk of ’tradition,’ ’rules,’ and ’history.’ He was the guy with nothing to lose, perfectly willing to lawlessly and violently upend every single established hierarchy in the paddock.

Perhaps Horner and Marko were constantly at each other’s throats, perpetually locked in a bitter struggle to undermine one another. But the truth was, fundamentally, they were exactly the same breed of animal.

They belonged in the same house because they were cut from the same cloth.

However, this off-season, Horner had suffered a series of significant setbacks—

Ever since Ricciardo had backstabbed him and defected to Renault, Red Bull had been desperately searching for a capable Number Two driver. The entire Red Bull youth academy had been put under a microscope, pushed to their absolute limits.

The result? Looking across the entire roster, they could barely find a single viable candidate. None of them seemed capable of shouldering the immense responsibility.

Currently, the only driver within the entire Red Bull system deemed worthy of anticipation and hope was Pierre Gasly.

Yet, after Red Bull finally opened the door and offered him a seat, Gasly’s performance had been profoundly disappointing. Crushed under the massive weight of expectations, he had completely lost his way. He showed absolutely none of the fierce, ruthless aggression necessary to survive in the ’Meat Grinder’ that was Red Bull. His performances in the closing stages of the season were genuinely painful to watch.

Disappointment. Frustration. Suffocation. Deep confusion.

If the situation wasn’t so dire, Red Bull never would have turned their gaze outward, scouring the rest of the paddock for a suitable driver.

Tragically, Vettel went to Racing Point, and Kai renewed his contract with Ferrari. Both Marko and Horner, despite their obsessive, Machiavellian scheming, had seen their master plans completely collapse. The bitter frustration that had plagued them throughout the entire season carried right over. Even during the off-season, their aggressive, off-track political maneuvering had failed to secure the upper hand.

While Ferrari was monopolizing the entire paddock’s attention, and Mercedes-Benz was quietly executing a massive, hidden agenda, Red Bull remained exceptionally, unusually low-profile.

After repeatedly slamming their heads against a brick wall, Red Bull seemed to have temporarily gone quiet, vanishing entirely from the boiling, chaotic noise of the paddock.

Even the usually hyper-aggressive, caffeine-fueled Red Bull fanbase had sunk into a state of pessimistic depression. For them, the 2018 season had been anything but spectacular.

The gap in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ standings was massive. They had been eliminated from championship contention incredibly early. The truly memorable, highlight-reel moments of the season could be counted on one hand. Ricciardo’s defection, the chaotic engine supplier switch... perhaps the only consistent ’highlight’ of their entire season was the endless string of power unit failures. They were the undisputed Kings of the DNF.

Now, facing the off-season, they were still staring at a massive, unresolved mess—

Everyone insisted that ditching the Renault engine was the correct strategic choice. The Red Bull fans believed it too; they were honestly exhausted from cursing Renault’s name every single weekend. But the problem was, Honda didn’t look much better. The future was highly uncertain and clouded in fog. No matter how you looked at it, it felt like they had just escaped the tiger’s den only to walk straight into a wolf’s lair.

Furthermore, their second driver seat was still empty. Weren’t there only twenty seats in the entire paddock? Weren’t they supposedly the most coveted, highly sought-after jobs on the planet? Weren’t drivers supposedly willing to crack each other’s skulls open just for a chance at one? Then why on earth was Red Bull—one of the legendary ’Big Three’—unable to find a driver?!

They simply couldn’t find a reason to be happy.

While Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari were fiercely and aggressively preparing for the new season, Red Bull—having narrowly missed out on both Vettel and Kai—felt like they were being shoved into a bottomless abyss. They were enveloped in a cloud of anxiety and chaotic unease. Even force-feeding themselves optimistic PR spin couldn’t generate any real excitement. Looking ahead, everything just looked bleak and gray.

Clearly, this was incredibly abnormal.

The paddock had never, ever seen Red Bull act this well-behaved and docile. It was deeply unsettling. True, seasoned paddock veterans were secretly exchanging knowing glances:

Red Bull has to be brewing something massive. Whether it’s Horner, Marko, or both of them working together... regardless, there’s absolutely no way Red Bull just sits quietly and does nothing.

—And sure enough.

”EXCLUSIVE: ALEXANDER ALBON WILL DRIVE FOR RED BULL RACING IN THE 2019 SEASON.”

Red Bull was still Red Bull. Even when they maintained a low profile and stayed completely silent, they were still brewing a massive storm in the shadows.

This time was no different.

Red Bull’s docile behavior didn’t last long. Sky Sports casually tossed out a massive breaking news alert, single-handedly pushing the paddock hurricane to a terrifying new peak.

In a way, the sheer magnitude of this bombshell rivaled the news about Kai. Ferrari renewing Kai was the logical, expected outcome; the ’bombshell’ element was entirely focused on the astronomical, unprecedented size of the contract. But Red Bull signing Albon? That was a result that utterly shattered every single expectation. The ’bombshell’ element was that absolutely no one had seen it coming.

Red Bull, truly living up to their reputation. Surprise! Didn’t see that coming, did you?

The agonizing suspense surrounding Red Bull’s second seat had dragged on for over half a year. It had spawned countless rumors and endless speculation, ricocheting from Kai, to Vettel, and then to Gasly, creating wave after wave of massive drama. Yet, after spinning in a massive, chaotic circle, the seat ultimately landed in the lap of Alexander Albon.

The driver who had finished third in the F2 Championship standings this year!

With this announcement, the Champion, Runner-up, and Second Runner-up of the 2018 F2 season had all successfully secured seats in Formula 1. They would later become famously known as the ”Class of 2019: The Three Musketeers,” undeniably forming a spectacular, highly anticipated new landscape on the grid.

The hype instantly exploded off the charts!

In truth, the intense discussions had started early in the first half of the year. Because of Kai’s mind-bending, reality-shattering performances, the paddock’s deeply ingrained, rigid stereotypes had been completely destroyed. The level of attention focused on young, emerging drivers had reached an unprecedented, historic high. This intense scrutiny cascaded downward, from F2 to GP3, and even all the way down to the karting circuits. Everyone was desperately searching for the ’Next Kai.’ This massive youth movement had thoroughly permeated every single level of the motorsport world.

Fortunately, the spectacularly brutal, high-stakes battles in F2 and GP3 this season hadn’t disappointed. Ferocious, wheel-to-wheel combat and dramatic, climax-filled racing had been a constant throughout the year.

From every conceivable angle, you could feel that a massive, explosive surge of generational talent was currently erupting. And right now, that surge had finally breached the ultimate summit.

As expected, they didn’t disappoint. F2 had simultaneously launched three rookies directly into F1 in a single year! It was a rare, magnificent sight!

From the 2018 F2 Champion down to the Second Runner-up, this massive youth movement—originally ignited by Kai—continued to accelerate, completely monopolizing the paddock’s attention.

Russell joined Williams. Norris joined McLaren. Albon joined Red Bull.

Massive anticipation! The crowd went absolutely wild!

First, Verstappen had violently disrupted the paddock hierarchy with his unprecedented, rule-breaking entry. Then, Kai and Leclerc had exploded onto the scene as a brilliant, twin-star phenomenon. And now, the world was witnessing the ”Three Musketeers” step onto the stage together. The rebellion of the youth was charging forward with unstoppable momentum, launching consecutive, devastating strikes against the establishment. Inside and outside the paddock, everyone could physically feel the turbulent, chaotic shifting of an era.

Historically, F1 has always been a sport defined by continuous, cyclical generational shifts. New rookies emerge every year, and every year, aging veterans are ruthlessly washed out by the incoming tide. The brutal, cutthroat competition for a mere twenty seats on the grid inherently kept the friction between the old guard and the new blood at a white-hot intensity. The debate of ”Experience vs. Raw Talent” was a classic, evergreen topic in paddock magazines; it never got old. Therefore, there was usually no need to panic or overreact just because a few rookies joined the grid or a ’youth movement’ occurred.

However, the current situation was fundamentally different. Verstappen’s out-of-nowhere debut had forced the FIA to panic and hastily rewrite the super license regulations to plug the loophole. Kai’s dazzling, supernova entrance had completely shattered the entire paddock’s established concepts and rules. This so-called ’younger generation’ were no longer just participants or quiet observers; they were aggressively, forcefully seizing power and taking total control.

Add to that the official retirement of Fernando Alonso, the ”Living Fossil of the Paddock.”

Heading into 2019, the historical significance of the clash between the old guard and the new blood was going to reach an unprecedented, monumental peak. Millions upon millions of spotlights were focusing entirely on the Three Musketeers—

It was, in the truest sense of the word, a global spectacle.

A simple comparison instantly revealed the stark contrast. Wolff’s deep-seated conservatism became glaringly obvious. Even with ”Kai Mania” completely sweeping the paddock, proving the terrifying value of raw youth, Russell still hadn’t secured a seat at Mercedes-Benz. Instead, he was shipped off to Williams for a trial by fire. Meanwhile, Norris and Albon were directly promoted into their respective parent teams, instantly stepping onto the main stage.

Especially Albon.

Horner had displayed immense courage and audacity, breaking all precedent by directly promoting Albon straight into the main Red Bull Racing seat.

The differing styles and characteristics of the Team Principals were on full display. It wasn’t just Wolff and Horner; Zak Brown was also quietly, stubbornly sticking to his own unique philosophy in a corner away from the spotlight.

However, was the situation truly that simple?

Did Horner genuinely believe in Albon that deeply? Did he truly choose to place a massive, rule-breaking gamble specifically on Albon? Why didn’t he follow the Verstappen model and force Albon to grind through a year at Toro Rosso first? After agonizingly missing out on both Kai and Vettel, he just turned around and casually handed this once-in-a-lifetime, golden opportunity to... Albon?

So, did that mean Albon was a generational super-genius on par with Verstappen and Kai, perhaps even superior to them?

No. That was absolutely not the case.

Alexander Albon was of mixed British and Thai descent. His father was British, and his mother was Thai.

Compared to his peers like Leclerc and Verstappen, he hadn’t displayed top-tier, transcendental talent during his karting or lower formula days. Despite being a product of the Red Bull junior system, his journey had been rocky—he had been dropped from the program and brought back. His performances were generally considered mediocre. Marko had placed high hopes on Albon, only to be repeatedly disappointed, leading to Marko treating him with exceptional, brutal strictness.

In the 2018 F2 season, despite holding the initiative early on, he was ultimately overtaken by Norris, finishing a disappointing third in the final championship standings.

It was, once again, underwhelming.

After the season ended, it was essentially a foregone conclusion that Albon had missed his window for F1. Consequently, he had officially signed a contract to race in Formula E. He was fully prepared to embark on a brand new journey, explore different possibilities, and launch an entirely different professional career.

From every conceivable angle, Albon was not a generational genius. He was barely considered good enough to secure a permanent seat in the F1 paddock.

Rather than choosing Albon, choosing Gasly made infinitely more sense. At the very least, the French driver had already survived a grueling year of experience at Toro Rosso; he wouldn’t be going in completely blind.

More accurately, even though Gasly’s performance in the 2018 season hadn’t met expectations, he was still, objectively, a vastly more logical and suitable choice than Albon.

And then, the turning point arrived—

Marko had aggressively pushed for Vettel. Horner had aggressively pushed for Kai. Ultimately, both Red Bull titans had the door slammed in their faces. In the midst of their vicious, blood-soaked, smoke-filled internal power struggle, it was incredibly rare for both of them to suffer massive defeats simultaneously. This completely shattered the internal balance of power. Under these highly volatile circumstances, whoever could react the fastest and pivot the hardest would seize the ultimate high ground.

Exactly as expected, Marko immediately pivoted and selected Gasly, moving aggressively to seize the initiative.

Without a doubt, Gasly was objectively the most suitable choice available at that exact moment. If Horner couldn’t counter-attack quickly and present a more compelling candidate, he would once again suffer a massive, humiliating defeat in this brutal power struggle. Even worse, if his rebellion failed, the next few seasons were going to be agonizingly difficult for him.

Verstappen. Gasly. Both drivers were fiercely loyal to Marko. Horner’s position within Red Bull would become increasingly isolated, leaving him stretched incredibly thin and lacking any real authority.

Trapped in an absolute corner, Horner proved exactly why he was a brilliant survivor. He managed to locate a massive, hidden opportunity within the crisis. Armed with Albon’s resume, he personally flew out to aggressively lobby the Thai faction of Red Bull.

In truth, during the initial pursuit of Kai, the Thai faction had already been highly tempted. After all, the golden opportunity to forcefully crack open the massive Asian market and dig significantly deeper into its profits was staring them right in the face. However, the cost of supporting Kai was an open, total declaration of war against the Austrian faction, dragging them fully into a vicious, all-out power struggle. The slightest misstep could fundamentally destabilize the entire racing organization.

Because of this fear, they had been incredibly eager, yet perpetually paralyzed by indecision.

Ultimately, they had agonizingly missed their window of opportunity.

Human psychology is often bizarre. When you’re still weighing your options, you might be slightly interested, but not entirely committed. But suddenly, when that opportunity is snatched away right in front of your eyes, the stinging regret and deep frustration instantly amplifies your desire a hundredfold. It’s exactly like shopping: the words ”Limited Edition,” ”Last One in Stock,” or ”Sold Out” possess a unique, terrifying psychological magic. The distance between ”mildly interested” and ”violently scrambling to buy” is separated by a single, razor-thin line.

And the exact same dynamic was playing out right now.

Horner ruthlessly exploited this exact psychological vulnerability to shatter the deadlock. Furthermore, he held one absolutely critical, ultimate trump card: Albon was Thai. That connection went significantly deeper than Kai’s mere ’Asian market’ appeal.

And just like that, it happened. Albon was parachuted directly into Red Bull Racing. He wasn’t sent to Toro Rosso; he bypassed the entire proving ground and claimed the highly coveted main Red Bull seat in one massive, unprecedented leap—

Once again, Kai had guessed correctly. Horner, who had been lurking in the shadows waiting for an opening, couldn’t possibly have acted without a meticulously prepared contingency plan.

Undoubtedly, Horner fully understood Marko’s ruthless methods and capabilities. The moment Horner made his move, he knew he would have to face the full, unbridled fury of Marko’s subsequent retaliation. Therefore, he absolutely had to guarantee he didn’t return empty-handed and trap himself in an unwinnable situation. He executed a comprehensive, masterful strategy. Not only was he preparing to violently contest the internal power structure of the team, but he was simultaneously hammering a massive, immovable nail directly into the youth academy system, aggressively asserting his own authority from the top of the organization all the way down to the bottom.

Perhaps—and this was purely a hypothetical possibility, a wild guess—during his negotiations with Kai, Horner had already meticulously planned out this entire future trajectory. Kai was merely intended to be the vanguard; Albon was always meant to be the ultimate focal point for the subsequent succession of power.

Clearly, the original master plans had violently derailed. This was true for Mercedes-Benz, and it was equally true for Red Bull.

But just like Wolff, Horner displayed incredible audacity and razor-sharp intellect amidst a catastrophic crisis. He skipped several intermediate steps, bypassed the standard protocols, and violently shoved Albon into the spotlight in one massive, breathless surge.

The times produce their heroes.

History always repeats itself with terrifying accuracy. When Kai parachuted into Ferrari, he fiercely seized the opportunity, completely upended the paddock, and transformed himself into the epicenter of the storm that dictated the entire balance of power. Now, that exact same opportunity had been violently thrust into Albon’s hands. He had parachuted directly into Red Bull, and crucially, he had convinced the Thai faction to mobilize their full, terrifying corporate might to back him. The next chapter of history was waiting to be written by Albon’s own hands.

From this point forward, everything rested entirely on Albon’s shoulders. The winner becomes king; the loser becomes ash. Whether he authors a legend or is ground into dust depends entirely on his own ability.

The stories unfolding behind the scenes were sufficiently convoluted and wildly sensational. It seemed Red Bull was actively trying to follow in Ferrari’s footsteps—

Or, more accurately, they were following in Sergio Marchionne’s footsteps, desperately trying to replicate Ferrari’s miraculous 2018 achievement and completely upend the established hierarchy of the paddock.

The Asian market. The youth movement. Violent seizures of power. The brutal, naked pursuit of corporate interests. These factors were rapidly solidifying as the core, defining keywords of the entire paddock. But absolutely no one could predict exactly where the torrential currents of this new era were heading. Time was the only force capable of revealing the final answers.

But even if you were entirely blind to these covert, behind-the-scenes machinations... even if you couldn’t accurately trace the chaotic, invisible currents surging beneath the paddock’s surface... simply looking at the massive, publicly visible bombshells was enough. For the second consecutive year, a completely untested rookie had parachuted directly into a highly coveted seat at one of the ’Big Three’ teams. That fact alone was enough to make everyone feel the violent, surging winds sweeping across the sport. A truly massive, spectacular drama was about to raise its curtains.

Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Red Bull—absolutely none of them were exempt from the coming storm.

Furthermore, it wasn’t just limited to the ’Big Three.’ Within the incredibly small, claustrophobic world of the F1 paddock, every other team was feeling the exact same tremors.

Pull one single hair, and the entire body moves.
