F1: The Speed Legend

”So, you don’t like Toto?” Binotto looked at Kai, his eyes flashing with genuine curiosity. He studied the young driver carefully. He had genuinely assumed that, given Wolff’s persistent, high-profile recruitment efforts during the off-season, the two men maintained a relatively positive personal relationship.

Kai shook his head. ”No. The reality is the exact opposite. I possess a profound respect for Toto. Following the catastrophic derailment of his overarching strategic layout at the start of the season, his real-time strategic adjustments have been incredibly rapid and ruthlessly efficient. Furthermore, the intense, high-pressure dynamic he has actively cultivated between Bottas and Hamilton—forcing them to violently push each other to the absolute limit—is rapidly becoming the critical factor allowing Mercedes-Benz to widen the performance gap.”

”It is precisely because I respect him so profoundly that I am forced to give absolutely everything I have to fight him.”

”After all, successfully defeating an elite opponent like Toto is vastly more entertaining than simply lapping the Williams cars on repeat.”

The corners of Binotto’s mouth twitched. ”George Russell probably just woke up in a cold sweat in his hotel room.”

Kai froze for a microsecond before bursting into loud, uninhibited laughter.

Binotto, conversely, maintained a perfectly calm, deadpan expression, as if he genuinely couldn’t comprehend why his statement was funny. He waited patiently for Kai to regain his composure before tilting his chin back toward the bank of telemetry monitors. ”We’ve fully analyzed all the necessary core data points. Is there anything specific we’ve overlooked?”

The most profound, fundamental difference between this season and last year at Spa was that Kai and Leclerc were now completely, fundamentally integrated into the core tactical debriefs. They were active, vital participants in the decision-making process.

Naturally, the highly complex operational dynamic between the drivers and the engineering team still required continuous, meticulous refinement. Both sides were actively working to establish a flawless, perfectly synchronized rhythm. However, as the races ticked by, the engineering team had successfully navigated the initial, incredibly awkward transition period. They were undeniably, steadily assuming the exact operational posture Kai had envisioned.

Once upon a time, the Maranello technical department firmly, arrogantly believed that allowing a driver to dictate the chassis development path would trigger the apocalypse. It would be the absolute, catastrophic end of Ferrari.

Now, having actually sat across the table from Kai and engaged in brutal, transparent debates... they realized the sky hadn’t fallen. The Earth was not currently showing any signs of imminent destruction.

Therefore, exactly as Binotto stated, the technical debriefs were now comprehensive, all-inclusive discussions. Kai no longer needed to pull brutal, isolated all-nighters obsessively dissecting telemetry alone.

Kai waved his hand dismissively. ”No. After the official meeting concluded, I had a brief chat with Laurent and Jock. The conversation sparked a few interesting concepts in my head. I simply wanted to review the raw data one last time to confirm my theories before we finalize our overarching strategic layout for Monaco.”

Every single Grand Prix was a brutal, self-contained war. But simultaneously, it was also an absolutely critical data-gathering exercise required to optimize the setup for the next battle.

Baku laid the crucial foundation for Barcelona. Naturally, Barcelona laid the foundation for Monaco. Playing the championship game required maintaining absolute oversight of the entire board. You had to calculate three moves ahead; you couldn’t afford to be blindly fixated on the immediate present.

Sensing the shift in focus, Binotto sat down in the chair next to Kai.

”Ignore the ultimate lap times for a moment,” Kai instructed. ”Focus entirely on the physical feedback generated during the driving phases.”

Binotto’s eyes were already locked onto the primary monitor.

The graphs displaying steering input amplitude, front-axle load distribution, and the throttle application curves were sequentially magnified.

”Following the Barcelona upgrades, the front axle is undeniably significantly more stable,” Kai stated, pointing directly at the telemetry curves. ”During the critical corner-entry phase, I no longer require secondary, microscopic steering corrections to maintain the trajectory.”

This was a massively, critically important aerodynamic evolution.

On a circuit like Barcelona, which is characterized by a relentless sequence of high-speed and medium-speed corners, this specific ”stability” didn’t seamlessly translate into a massive increase in raw lap time. But on a brutally slow, claustrophobic street circuit defined by zero margin for error—where the barriers are inches from the wheels—that stability could easily dictate the difference between life and death.

”The catastrophic flaw still resides entirely in the final phase of the corner,” Kai continued.

He pulled up the tire temperature curve.

”It’s no longer suffering an instantaneous, catastrophic cliff-drop. The degradation is now a slow, agonizing slide. Obviously, we’ve successfully dragged ourselves slightly back from the absolute edge of the abyss. We aren’t immediately entering a state of terminal free-fall. However, it’s still a terrifying dance on the edge of a razor blade. The rear of the chassis isn’t violently losing control... but the raw mechanical traction required for a rapid exit is still catastrophically lacking.”

Binotto remained silent. His fingertips tapped a light, rhythmic cadence against his arm.

The underlying physics weren’t difficult to comprehend. But the engineers were restricted to analyzing raw numbers on a screen; they fundamentally lacked the visceral, hyper-sensitive physical feedback the drivers experienced in the cockpit. Kai was clearly, meticulously laying out the exact physical sensations.

”Conversely, look at Red Bull. Verstappen’s raw traction exiting the low-speed corners is glaringly, vastly superior to ours. That isn’t a byproduct of aerodynamic efficiency; that is pure, raw mechanical grip. Their developmental progress is absolutely phenomenal.”

To be brutally accurate, Ferrari’s aerodynamic upgrade path wasn’t fundamentally incorrect. The true issue was that Red Bull’s massive upgrade package—which had spectacularly failed in Baku—had finally been fully optimized in Barcelona. Red Bull, who had been silently sharpening their blades in the dark, had finally unleashed their lethal potential.

Since the season opener, although Kai had consistently managed to suppress Verstappen, Ferrari’s actual, tangible performance advantage over Red Bull had never been massive. They had always been operating within the exact same performance window. Therefore, when Red Bull’s upgrades finally functioned as intended, it was entirely logical that the two teams would begin trading blows. There was absolutely no need for frantic panic.

The fatal flaw exposed following the Barcelona upgrades wasn’t a lack of ultimate speed; it was a catastrophic failure in energy management.

On the surface, the SF90 had undeniably crashed back down to Earth in Barcelona. The performance was massively below projections. Their terrifying Qualifying advantage had been completely eradicated, and their long-run race pace had been violently overtaken by Red Bull. Kai wasn’t surprised in the slightest by the brutal assessments of the industry analysts. The vicious criticism and widespread panic were entirely anticipated. They had explicitly modeled these exact scenarios before greenlighting the specific upgrade path.

In reality, the fundamental problem with the SF90 was that the optimal operating window had subtly shifted. The window was arguably slightly wider than it had been previously, but its location had moved. Consequently, the drivers were forced to radically alter their inputs, and their fundamental approach to tackling different circuit layouts had to be completely deconstructed and rebuilt from scratch.

The current iteration of the SF90 possessed a significantly more stable front axle, but its absolute mechanical grip during the mid-corner rotation phase had decreased. The aerodynamic airflow underneath the floorboard had been successfully linearized, which resulted in a slight reduction in absolute peak velocity on the straights, but the airflow no longer suffered violent, catastrophic stalls under heavy load. The increased stability of the rear axle allowed the tires to survive significantly longer during a race stint, but the inevitable trade-off was a severe reduction in explosive, single-lap pace. This also caused unpredictable fluctuations in grip during corner exit, resulting in sluggish, unresponsive traction. This specific characteristic demanded a vastly higher degree of throttle control from the driver.

To summarize it simply: they had explicitly sacrificed their explosive, single-lap Qualifying pace to secure long-run stability for the Race.

Rhythm. Rhythm was now the absolute, critical factor.

On a highly aerodynamic-dependent circuit like Barcelona, Mercedes-Benz’s inherent superiority was undeniably massive. It was entirely logical that Ferrari couldn’t catch them. However, on a circuit like Monaco—which prioritized absolute driver confidence and flawless rhythm above all else—or even on upcoming circuits like Silverstone and Suzuka, Ferrari possessed a genuine, highly competitive advantage.

Kai’s comprehensive, sweeping analysis was incredibly detailed and vividly descriptive. It wasn’t just a dry recitation of raw telemetry; it was a visceral, profound interpretation of the circuit through the eyes of an elite driver.

Binotto stared at Kai. He could clearly see the brilliant, unshakeable confidence radiating from that young face. At this exact moment, absolutely no one would dare question Kai’s age. The absolute, unyielding conviction bleeding through his every word and gesture commanded total respect. Binotto could almost physically see the concept of ’rhythm’ flowing back and forth between Kai’s fingers as he absentmindedly spun a pencil across his knuckles.

”Monaco?” Binotto asked smoothly, prompting the next phase of the discussion.

Kai nodded slightly. ”We absolutely cannot touch the front-axle setup. Even if it requires sacrificing a degree of initial turn-in agility, we must prioritize absolute, rock-solid stability.”

”The rear suspension needs to be incredibly soft. Raw mechanical traction must be prioritized above all else, even if it severely compromises the chassis’s responsiveness. The differential lock angle on corner exit needs to be extremely conservative. I would vastly prefer to lose a fraction of a second on the exit than risk the rear tire temperatures violently spiraling out of control.”

”Because, ultimately, Monaco is a circuit where track position is vastly, exponentially more critical than tire life.”

Once they hit the asphalt on Sunday, their sole objective was to fiercely defend their track position. They absolutely, definitively could not allow the tires to suffer another catastrophic cliff-drop.

Binotto listened with absolute, laser-focused intensity. Kai’s analysis triggered a massive surge of inspiration. A torrent of tactical possibilities flooded his brain. His fingertips, which had been rhythmically tapping his arm, suddenly stopped. ”Oof. Qualifying is still going to be a massive, terrifying headache.”

Clearly, executing this strategy required taking a massive gamble.

On one hand, Monaco was a circuit where track position was everything. The starting grid order on Sunday was almost always the exact same order at the checkered flag. Overtaking was practically impossible.

On the other hand, during the actual race, the chassis required absolute stability. They had to mitigate any violent fluctuations or unpredictable behavior, because the car needed to remain securely planted on the asphalt to defend that crucial track position.

The former demanded explosive, limit-shattering performance. The latter demanded conservative, rock-solid stability.

Historically, Red Bull always aggressively pursued the former, adopting a reckless, ’do-or-die’ approach to Qualifying. Mercedes-Benz generally favored the latter, ensuring they maintained absolute, composed control over the entire Grand Prix.

In a perfect world, Kai would obviously prefer the Red Bull approach, utilizing a devastating Qualifying lap to secure the foundational victory. The fatal problem was that the SF90’s long-run race pace issues were simply too severe. If they pushed the setup too aggressively, the tires would inevitably collapse. Forget about defending track position; they would likely bin it into the wall and DNF. Therefore, the only logical, pragmatic option was to adopt the Mercedes-Benz approach.

Consequently, Qualifying was going to be a brutal, agonizing crucible.

Binotto looked at Kai and let out a helpless chuckle. It appeared the massive barrage of toxic criticism from the media and the industry ’experts’ was going to continue mercilessly besieging the Ferrari garage.

Kai raised his hand, mimicking holding a phone to his ear. He adopted a highly exaggerated, dramatic voice. ”Mattia! It’s John!”

Pfft—

Binotto was caught completely off guard. He completely failed to suppress his amusement, bursting into a loud laugh. It was classic Kai. Even in the face of a massive crisis, he never missed an opportunity for sarcasm.

Binotto accepted a tissue from Kai, wiped the corner of his mouth, and shook his head in helpless amusement. ”If you genuinely aren’t bothered by the pressure, then please don’t waste time worrying about me.”

As the undisputed new face of Ferrari, the crushing weight of the public relations nightmare rested almost entirely on Kai’s shoulders. The toxic vitriol on social media was vastly more terrifying than anything Elkann could dish out.

Kai’s expression remained perfectly serene. ”The Monaco Grand Prix doesn’t actually begin when the red lights go out on Sunday. The true race begins the exact second the very first car dives into the pit lane. We need to maintain absolute oversight of the entire board.”

After all, the people actually risking their lives driving the cars on the asphalt weren’t the toxic keyboard warriors, and it certainly wasn’t John Elkann.

Binotto instantly understood Kai’s underlying strategy. This was an elaborate, overarching tactical layout entirely dedicated to rhythm control. They needed to utilize the foundation they had built in Shanghai and push it to the next level.

”So, regarding Barcelona—”

”I actually felt incredibly positive about the car,” Kai stated, delivering a highly unexpected answer. He finally possessed a chassis he could genuinely control and implicitly trust. The aerodynamic upgrade path was undeniably proceeding in the correct direction. The next phase required continuous, meticulous refinement and adaptation to unlock its true, consistent competitive potential.

Naturally, further massive upgrades were still absolutely essential.

He paused for a beat. The corners of his mouth curved upward. ”This specific upgrade package definitely aligns vastly more closely with my personal driving style.”

It absolutely did not suit Charles.

The Number One driver was ultimately the Number One driver. The developmental focus was inevitably skewed.

Binotto, however, fundamentally disagreed. ”If the team required you to drive with Charles’s aggressive, hyper-erratic style, you would adapt flawlessly. The rest of the paddock might genuinely believe your primary strength is smooth rhythm control, but I still vividly remember the completely unstoppable, violently aggressive Kai during the GP3 Sprint Races. You are simply utilizing your phenomenal talent to continuously adapt your driving inputs to maximize the specific characteristics of the chassis.”

Unfortunately, Leclerc was currently incapable of executing that level of adaptation.

Obviously, Binotto firmly believed in Leclerc’s massive raw talent. If given enough time, Leclerc would eventually bridge the gap. But at this specific moment in his career, he simply lacked the necessary experience.

The SF90’s developmental trajectory was undeniably influenced by Kai’s preferences, but the primary driving factor was that the chassis’s foundational design was already terrifyingly extreme. They couldn’t push it any further in that specific direction without hitting a massive, impenetrable brick wall. After meticulously analyzing every conceivable variable, this was the only viable path forward.

Observing Binotto’s expression, Kai realized the Team Principal hadn’t fully grasped his underlying point. He turned back to the computer and pulled up the telemetry from Lap 27.

The tire temperature curve.

”Look right here. I had not initiated a push phase. Yet, the tire temperatures began to fluctuate wildly. This wasn’t caused by my steering inputs; it was entirely due to the unpredictable manner in which the mechanical traction was delivered.”

”Charles’s specific driving style requires the chassis to deliver an instantaneous, violently sharp response on corner entry. The current iteration of the car simply cannot provide that. Therefore, when he initiates a push phase, he is guaranteed to encounter massive instability.”

”The critical issue is that this highly specific instability will be massively, catastrophically amplified on the streets of Monaco.”

Obviously, absolutely no one wanted a repeat of the catastrophic disaster in Q2 at Baku, where Leclerc binned the car into the wall at Turn 8. Ferrari was still operating from a position of massive disadvantage. If they wanted to utilize complex, multi-car strategic maneuvers to violently break the deadlock, they absolutely required both cars to survive the race and secure positions at the very front of the grid.

Furthermore, setting aside Kai’s miraculous victories in Melbourne and Shanghai, Mercedes-Benz had ruthlessly monopolized the top two steps of the podium in every single other race. Their advantage in the Constructors’ Championship was expanding at a terrifying rate. If Leclerc remained trapped in P5, it was a massive, catastrophic problem for Ferrari’s overall campaign.

Currently, Leclerc’s driving style was wildly aggressive and heavily reliant on sheer reflexes. He demanded a hyper-aggressive front axle, willingly accepting massive instability at the rear. He didn’t prioritize smooth exit speed. He utilized violent steering inputs and aggressive throttle application to brutally wrestle the chassis right to the absolute limit. He was heavily dependent on instantaneous, peak mechanical grip to deliver explosive lap times in extremely short, violent bursts.

There was a very good reason Leclerc had completely dominated all three Free Practice sessions in Barcelona. His raw, explosive talent was always put on full, terrifying display during Qualifying simulations.

Unfortunately, the current iteration of the SF90 was fundamentally incapable of providing the stable platform Leclerc required to fully unleash that talent.

Binotto looked up. ”What exactly are you proposing?”

Kai replied smoothly, ”Perhaps we could utilize two entirely different setup philosophies. We could run vastly different steering geometries, a significantly sharper, more aggressive front axle, and a much looser rear wing configuration for his car. It would grant Charles vastly more operational freedom to extract raw pace within the claustrophobic confines of Monaco.”

Looking up, Binotto saw the brilliant, mischievous light dancing in Kai’s eyes. A faint smile touched his lips. That terrifyingly fast brain was clearly formulating another massive, devious trap.

Binotto’s eyes also lit up with intense interest. ”It appears someone is about to suffer a catastrophic disaster.”

Kai adopted an expression of profound, offended innocence. ”How can you possibly call it a disaster? It’s simply a friendly sparring match. A fair, highly honorable duel. Inside the Formula 1 paddock, a brilliant tactical maneuver and a malicious trap are absolutely not the same thing.”

”I was simply hypothesizing... during Qualifying, we unleash Charles and allow him to brutally push the absolute limits of the chassis. We’ve already demonstrated our terrifying Qualifying pace in Bahrain. If we can successfully replicate that explosive speed on the streets of Monaco, it will act as a massive, brilliant smokescreen. It will force our rivals to make catastrophic misjudgments regarding our true capabilities.”

”Then, dynamically adapting to the final Qualifying order, we deploy two entirely divergent Race strategies to orchestrate a massive, multi-pronged assault.”

”Charles will obviously push with absolutely everything he has. Naturally, I will do exactly the same. I will utilize 100% of my capability to secure the optimal grid position. I am absolutely not going to simply step aside and allow Charles to defeat me. However, executing this dual-pronged strategy will ultimately provide us with vastly more compelling, undeniable telemetry to justify our future developmental paths.”

”To execute this flawlessly, we must implement the divergent strategies starting from Free Practice 1. We will both naturally complete the mandatory testing programs, but Charles’s setup will be heavily skewed toward maximizing Qualifying pace, while mine will be entirely focused on long-run Race stability. By blending truth and deception, we will make it mathematically impossible for our rivals to accurately decode our true operational baseline.”

In Barcelona, despite the results falling slightly below projections, Kai had projected an aura of absolute, unshakeable confidence during his post-race interviews. He could easily maintain that exact posture heading into Monaco.

However—

Kai explicitly claimed it was merely a ’performance.’ But no matter how closely Binotto scrutinized him, it absolutely didn’t look like an act. The brilliant, resolute confidence radiating from Kai was incredibly pure and utterly unshakeable. Where was the slightest trace of deception?

It was no wonder the technical department—who were constantly vacillating and buckling under the crushing pressure—took one look into Kai’s eyes, saw his unwavering trust and encouragement, and immediately swallowed all their bitter complaints. They willingly, obediently lowered their heads and threw themselves back into the grueling work, utterly terrified of betraying Kai’s absolute faith in them.

He was genuinely, terrifyingly brilliant.

In truth, forget about the engineers. Even Binotto himself was momentarily incapable of distinguishing between Kai’s carefully crafted illusions and his genuine reality. He just... fundamentally, instinctively wanted to place his absolute trust in Kai.

A few minutes ago, Kai had suggested that when facing Elkann’s wrath, Binotto could simply dump all the blame onto him and let him act as the sole scapegoat. Binotto now fully realized Kai absolutely had not been joking. Even when facing a terrifying corporate titan like Elkann, Kai would undoubtedly maintain absolute control over the situation, entirely dictating the terms of the engagement.

After a brief pause, Binotto looked at Kai. A sudden, profound curiosity flared in his chest. ”Aren’t you terrified that Charles might eventually evolve into another Valtteri Bottas?”

Or perhaps, another Sebastian Vettel, perfectly mirroring the toxic, destructive rivalry they had endured last season.

Kai’s expression turned deadly serious. He shook his head firmly. ”No. That is a fundamentally flawed comparison. Charles is undeniably vastly more talented than Valtteri. That isn’t a speculative hypothesis; it is an absolute, undeniable fact.”

”I firmly, unshakeably believe that Charles will eventually massively surpass Valtteri. Simultaneously, I also know with absolute certainty that as Charles continues to evolve and improve, I will absolutely not remain stagnant. The true test will be determining exactly where our absolute, ultimate limits lie. We will see who is capable of touching the higher ceiling. Because I know I will never stop pushing, I genuinely, desperately hope Charles never stops challenging me.”

True, unshakeable confidence is not derived from preying on weak, pathetic opponents. Quite the opposite. It is forged entirely by facing genuinely terrifying, elite rivals, and maintaining the absolute conviction that you will ultimately stand victorious.

Yet, the man delivering this incredibly arrogant, world-shaking declaration didn’t strike a dramatic, boastful pose. He delivered the statement casually, entirely matter-of-factly, as if he were simply confirming that one plus one equals two.

Before Binotto could even attempt to process the profound implications of the statement, Kai had already shifted his focus entirely back to the telemetry on the monitors.

Binotto was left momentarily stunned. All his lingering anxieties, his hyper-vigilant paranoia, his suffocating stress... it all instantly evaporated, replaced entirely by a massive surge of eager, burning anticipation. His fighting spirit had been quietly, flawlessly resurrected.

Monaco had initially loomed on the calendar as a massive, terrifying headache for Ferrari. But now, Binotto found himself genuinely, eagerly looking forward to the challenge.

...

May. Early summer. The crisp, refreshing heat shimmered beneath the golden sunlight. The jewel-toned waters of the Mediterranean Sea sparkled with a gentle, hypnotic luminescence. It was exactly like a dream.

It felt as though the 2019 season had only just begun a microsecond ago. Yet, in the blink of an eye, the most chaotic, glamorous, and spectacularly vibrant phase of the European summer had officially arrived.

The Monaco Grand Prix took center stage.

In recent years, the controversy surrounding the Monaco Grand Prix had grown exponentially louder. A massive consensus was forming both inside and outside the paddock: while street circuits offered undeniable danger and visceral thrills, they fundamentally lacked genuine racing spectacle. Due to the inherent, claustrophobic limitations of the city streets, combined with the massive dimensions and complex aerodynamics of the turbo-hybrid era cars, executing a genuine overtake on the track was becoming practically impossible.

In a desperate bid to manufacture viral hype and artificial drama, F1 management had continuously attempted to shoehorn more street circuits onto the calendar, forcing the massive cars onto narrow city roads. But what was the actual result?

Because overtaking on street circuits was practically nonexistent, the order established during Qualifying was almost always the exact order at the checkered flag. The races were agonizingly tedious and sleep-inducing. Furthermore, the claustrophobic confines inevitably triggered a massive cascade of chaotic accidents. The Safety Car was constantly deployed, violently shattering the flow of the race. What was already a boring procession devolved into a fragmented, frustrating disaster.

Monaco was the absolute worst offender.

It was undeniably the most historically significant, culturally influential event on the entire Formula 1 calendar. But the glaring, unavoidable reality was that year after year, the Monaco Grand Prix was rapidly losing its suspense and its fundamental racing allure. It was becoming increasingly tedious and sterile. The visceral, terrifying thrill of watching drivers dance on the absolute edge of a razor wire had completely vanished. For the millions of fans watching on television, the actual racing product on the asphalt was vastly less compelling than watching the chaotic, glamorous spectacle unfolding in the grandstands and on the yachts.

The logical, progressive path forward for Formula 1 was to aggressively cull the street circuits and prioritize purpose-built, high-performance racing tracks.

However, the reality of the situation was never that simple.

Although a multitude of complex factors were actively neutering the once-terrifying ’Demon Circuit,’ making it appear docile and completely devoid of raw speed and passion... the historical, monumental status of the Monaco Grand Prix remained absolutely unshakeable. It was the undisputed, crowning jewel of Formula 1. Not even legendary, historic circuits like Silverstone, Monza, or Interlagos could rival its cultural footprint. To the general public who knew absolutely nothing about motorsport, Monaco was the definitive face of Formula 1. It had long since transcended racing to become a massive, global brand identity.

Cancel the Monaco Grand Prix?

That was absolutely, mathematically impossible. Absolutely no one inside or outside the paddock would ever commit such an unfathomably stupid act. In fact, the reality was the exact opposite. F1 management was doubling down, aggressively promoting the Monaco Grand Prix. They were determined to elevate this historic circuit—which carried the weight of countless legendary moments—into the ultimate, definitive landmark of Formula 1. They wanted it to be a global pilgrimage site that every single racing fan on Earth desperately dreamed of visiting.

It was exactly the same as the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium for Real Madrid fanatics, or the Staples Center for Los Angeles Lakers loyalists.

The intrinsic, cultural value of a monumentally significant landmark was utterly impossible to accurately quantify in simple financial terms.

This year was absolutely no exception—

Or, to be vastly more accurate, this year pushed the spectacle to an entirely new, unprecedented stratosphere.

Building upon the massive momentum of Kai’s legendary, miraculous overcut victory last season, and the spectacular, star-studded season finale in Abu Dhabi... F1 management had partnered directly with Netflix. Long before the new season even officially kicked off, following the explosive debut of ’Drive to Survive,’ a massive, highly coordinated global marketing campaign entirely focused on the Monaco Grand Prix had been aggressively launched.

They were frantically rubbing their hands together, desperately attempting to exponentially expand Formula 1’s global cultural footprint and market share. Monaco was, without a shadow of a doubt, the undisputed crown jewel of that entire strategy:

Every single motorsport enthusiast on the planet absolutely must experience the Monaco Grand Prix in person. The sheer, visceral impact of experiencing it live guarantees you will fall profoundly, irreversibly in love with the sport. Speed, unadulterated passion, obscene luxury, absolute exclusivity, and towering glory... it possesses absolutely everything. It is exactly like the most romantic, spectacular dream imaginable. Absolutely no one should miss it.

The fact that the actual Sunday race was an agonizingly boring procession was entirely irrelevant. The sheer density of A-list celebrities and global billionaires successfully transformed the Monaco Grand Prix into a totally different breed of elite spectacle. In an era completely dominated by superficial entertainment, it acted as a massive, natural magnet for the global spotlight.

Consequently, every single massive corporate sponsor in the paddock was fully mobilized.

Following the conclusion of the Barcelona Grand Prix, a full ten days before the Monaco Grand Prix officially began, the tiny principality had already shifted entirely into party mode.

A massive, glaringly obvious signal: the undisputed titans of the paddock—Marlboro, Petronas, Hewlett-Packard, Santander, Emirates, Harman Kardon, Puma, Adidas, Oracle, and the rest—had universally descended upon Monaco. They were hosting an endless barrage of massive, ultra-exclusive VIP parties across the city.

Global billionaires, A-list celebrities, and powerful political figures were all in attendance. Amidst the clinking of crystal champagne flutes and the rustle of haute couture, the casual topics of conversation frequently involved astronomical, world-altering sums of money. Even if a specific business deal wasn’t finalized, the sheer networking value of establishing these elite connections was a massive, invaluable asset for future leverage. It was the ultimate, undisputed pinnacle of global high society.

Absolutely no one wanted to miss it—

To be brutally accurate, people were desperately, frantically trying to bribe, beg, and scheme their way onto the exclusive guest lists. Even if they simply stood in the corner holding a glass of champagne, doing a single lap of the room just to show their face... it was considered a once-in-a-lifetime, monumental experience.

However, compared to other elite, global parties, these specific gatherings were fundamentally unique. The Formula 1 drivers were the true, undisputed stars standing in the absolute center of the spotlight. Even the billionaires were ultimately there as fans, eager to bask in the aura of the racing gods. The men who commanded those terrifying machines were viewed with genuine awe.

A party that successfully secured Ricciardo’s attendance was fundamentally, astronomically superior to a party that only managed to book Magnussen. The massive disparity in prestige and status was instantly, glaringly obvious.

Without a shadow of a doubt, in previous years, Hamilton had always been the undisputed, absolute top-tier guest for all of these elite gatherings. This wasn’t merely due to his four World Championship titles. It was heavily attributed to the massive, sprawling network of connections he had meticulously cultivated across the fashion, film, and philanthropic industries. The highly charismatic, relentlessly social driver was undeniably the definitive face of Formula 1.

However, this year, the undisputed crown jewel of the party circuit had violently changed hands. It was no longer Hamilton. It was Kai.

The newly crowned World Champion had become the ultimate, most intensely coveted prize for every single luxury brand in the city. Every single billionaire and celebrity was desperate for a brief, close-quarters interaction. This frenzy was heavily fueled by the events following last season’s Abu Dhabi finale. Kai had attended Will Smith’s ultra-exclusive after-party. Smith had been absolutely effusive in his praise, loudly broadcasting his immense admiration for Kai across his massive, elite social circles. This triggered an unprecedented wave of intense curiosity—

Exactly what kind of terrifying, charismatic aura did this kid possess to completely captivate a seasoned, cynical Hollywood titan like Will Smith?

Massive rumors were swirling that the LVMH conglomerate had established an incredibly deep, intimate relationship with Kai. Not only was Frédéric Arnault known to be close, personal friends with Kai—personally gifting him a custom TAG Heuer timepiece after every single Grand Prix victory—but the terrifying patriarch of the empire, Bernard Arnault himself, had personally witnessed Kai’s legendary performance in Abu Dhabi. He had been so profoundly impressed that he had taken the incredibly rare, almost unprecedented step of seeking Kai out for a private meeting.

For the past year, massive rumors had been circulating non-stop that LVMH was preparing to launch a massive, full-scale invasion of the Formula 1 ecosystem. A highly credible theory was gaining massive traction: they firmly believed Kai was going to be their primary, definitive entry point.

Following the massive, historic contract extension Ferrari had offered Kai during the off-season, his commercial valuation had astronomically skyrocketed. The general consensus was that only a terrifying, global super-conglomerate like LVMH possessed the massive financial firepower required to match Kai’s current, terrifying global influence.

Naturally, everyone implicitly assumed that Kai would make his grand, highly anticipated appearance at the massive VIP party hosted by LVMH—

If he showed up, it would be viewed as massive, undeniable confirmation that the rumors were rapidly approaching reality.

The result? ...A complete, agonizing no-show.

Guests frantically scoured every single inch of the massive superyacht, but they completely failed to spot that handsome, fiercely arrogant young face.

The crowd was plunged into profound shock. If LVMH couldn’t successfully command Kai’s attendance, who on Earth could?

Perhaps Kai wasn’t flatly refusing to attend. Was he simply employing the classic ’fashionably late’ strategy?

After all, the guests had already spotted Vettel, Hamilton, and Ricciardo at the LVMH party. The drivers were universally thrilled and deeply honored to receive the exclusive invitations, all arriving early, dressed in immaculate, custom-tailored suits. If Kai had arrived early like the rest of the grid, it wouldn’t have sufficiently highlighted his newly elevated, elite status.

He was clearly aiming for the dramatic, show-stopping final entrance. A calculated power move designed specifically to suppress Hamilton’s aura.

They waited. And waited. But Kai’s silhouette never materialized. Even more bizarre, a shocking rumor began rapidly circulating through the party via hushed, frantic whispers:

Frédéric Arnault, the official host of the massive event, had completely vanished. He had essentially abandoned Hamilton, Vettel, and a massive crowd of ultra-VIPs, disappearing without a single trace.

Was this normal?

Generally speaking, it wasn’t particularly bizarre. As the host, Arnault wasn’t required to physically entertain every single guest for the entire duration of the event. A brief disappearance was no cause for panic. But combining his sudden vanishing act with Kai’s glaring absence... the guests began exchanging wild, highly speculative glances. Countless theories began to rapidly germinate.

Could it be—

Had Arnault actually left the yacht to personally, physically escort Kai to the party? Surely that was impossible, right?

...

Lucien Lebasque straightened his spine slightly, projecting an aura of flawless, refined European gentility. He was exerting every ounce of his energy to act as the perfect, gracious host, personally accompanying the undisputed, absolute epicenter of tonight’s massive media circus—

Kai.

It wasn’t just the Richard Mille party. It was highly likely that across the entire principality of Monaco, this elegant, fiercely charismatic young man was the undisputed, absolute center of the universe.

Lebasque knew perfectly well that he wasn’t the protagonist of this story. But simply standing adjacent to Kai caused the massive, suffocating wave of intense scrutiny radiating from every corner of the room to inadvertently wash over him. His skin felt physically hot. He strongly suspected that absolutely no one in the entire paddock had ever commanded this level of terrifying, absolute attention. Not now, and arguably not ever.

Holding his sentence on his tongue, Lebasque subtly nodded toward a specific figure who had been anxiously hovering nearby. He offered a slight, encouraging gesture with his eyes.

Exactly as anticipated, the figure flashed a brilliant smile of profound gratitude. She offered a polite, lady-like nod to express her thanks, seizing the brief lull in the conversation to quickly step forward.

”...I am so incredibly sorry to interrupt, but—if it isn’t too much trouble, would it be possible to get a quick photo with you?”

A pair of strikingly beautiful eyes meticulously studied Kai. Despite her highly refined, exceptionally polite posture, she couldn’t completely mask the genuine, bubbling excitement shining in her eyes.

She stared unblinkingly.

A microsecond later, she seemed to realize she was staring slightly too intensely. She offered a quick, somewhat embarrassed smile and lowered her head slightly to mask her gaze.

But it only lasted for a fleeting moment. She immediately raised her eyes again, looking at Kai with graceful, open confidence.

”My name is Emma Watson. Your performance at Monza last season was genuinely, absolutely breathtaking.”

The corners of Kai’s mouth curved upward, revealing a look of mild, genuine surprise. ”Monza? That is highly unexpected. Literally everyone else always mentions Monaco. I honestly assumed that non-racing fans only ever watched the Monaco Grand Prix.”

Watson’s eyes instantly lit up. Her smile threatened to overflow entirely. ”That is precisely why I mentioned it. I needed to say something specific to ensure I left a memorable impression. So, tell me, was my highly calculated strategy successful?”

She maintained her elegant posture, but a brilliant flash of cunning mischief danced in her smile.

Kai laughed out loud. ”Incredibly successful. I’m going to have to go back to my hotel tonight and immediately re-watch the Monza broadcast.”

Watson froze. She clearly hadn’t anticipated Kai firing back with that specific response. A microsecond later, she caught the faint, undeniable glimmer of teasing mischief dancing in Kai’s eyes. She finally realized Kai was actively mocking her. She completely lost her refined composure, bursting into bright, genuine laughter. Her smile bloomed completely.

Lebasque had been standing quietly off to the side the entire time, more than happy to play the role of the invisible spectator. He wasn’t bothered in the slightest that Watson hadn’t acknowledged his existence even once—

The iconic actress who had portrayed Hermione Granger in the ’Harry Potter’ franchise. Currently one of the absolute, undisputed A-list elites of Hollywood. Yet, standing in front of Kai, she possessed absolutely zero Hollywood arrogance. She was acting exactly like an ordinary, completely starstruck fan.

This was the terrifying reality of Kai’s current cultural footprint. Even in a hyper-exclusive, celebrity-saturated city like Monaco, he remained the absolute, inescapable center of the spotlight.

Over the past few months, Lebasque had remained profoundly, deeply grateful for Lorenzo’s initial introduction. He had fiercely gripped that opportunity, successfully securing Kai as a brand ambassador for Richard Mille. It was the absolute, definitive turning point for both his own career and the Richard Mille brand.

This weekend in Monaco, Richard Mille was preparing to officially unveil a brand-new, ultra-exclusive timepiece designed explicitly and exclusively for Kai. The special design had required a full year of meticulous, agonizing development. It was the very first massive, blockbuster collaboration between Richard Mille and Kai—

A single watch, carrying a staggering retail price of eight million US dollars.

It would absolutely not be made available for public retail. It was strictly limited to exclusive, private commissions.

In other words, Richard Mille wouldn’t even officially stock the watch in their boutiques. If a client desired to purchase one, they were required to contact Richard Mille directly to initiate a highly exclusive, private commissioning process.

When this specific sales strategy was initially leaked, it was heavily mocked as a cynical ”marketing gimmick.” Critics claimed it wasn’t designed to actually sell watches; it was purely a desperate stunt to manufacture viral hype and harvest engagement from the younger demographic. They dismissed it as a purely superficial promotional tactic.

However, what was the actual, brutal reality?

The exact second Richard Mille officially announced the project, they immediately received seven confirmed, fully funded private commissions. The clients were specifically, exclusively demanding the exact same model designed for Kai.

No further explanation was required. That raw, undeniable financial reality was infinitely more impactful than any viral marketing campaign.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Kai was the single most massive, crucial turning point in Lebasque’s entire professional career. And that didn’t even factor in the reality that Kai had literally, physically saved his life in the Alps.

That profound level of gratitude was impossible to accurately articulate with words.

He waited until Watson finally said her goodbyes and departed before turning back to Kai, a massive smile plastered across his face. ”Wow. Emma Watson?”

Kai looked at Lebasque, his eyes sparkling with amusement. ”I honestly had no idea you were such a massive ’Harry Potter’ fanatic.”

Lebasque froze, then burst out laughing. He completely abandoned the topic. ”Are you absolutely certain it’s okay for you to be spending the entire evening here?”

Kai shot him a look of profound, genuine confusion.

Lebasque chuckled helplessly. ”You know exactly what I’m talking about. The LVMH mega-party is happening tonight as well. Right down there in the harbor, on the single most massive superyacht in Monaco. Absolutely no one misses that event.”

In truth, Lebasque had seriously considered aggressively rescheduling his own event. Absolutely no one wanted to go head-to-head against LVMH. You didn’t need a degree in astrophysics to figure out which party the elite guests would choose if Richard Mille and LVMH hosted competing events on the exact same night.

Furthermore, TAG Heuer was constantly, aggressively lurking in the shadows, desperately waiting for an opportunity to poach Kai.

Simply visualizing the potential disaster made Lebasque’s skin crawl. He had absolutely zero desire to enter a brutal, head-to-head collision with LVMH and force Kai to make a definitive choice. He severely lacked the confidence to win that specific battle.

However, Monaco was exceptionally chaotic this year. There was a massive barrage of elite parties scheduled for every single night. If he actively avoided LVMH, the inevitable consequence was throwing himself directly into the crosshairs of several other massive luxury brands. The situation was equally treacherous and caused massive headaches.

He had absolutely never anticipated that Kai would proactively make the decision for him. Kai specifically selected this exact date, intentionally aligning it directly against LVMH, and informed him incredibly early on that he would be attending the Richard Mille party. He flawlessly eliminated a massive, agonizing crisis for Lebasque.

Kai had absolutely never forgotten, and would never forget, the immense gratitude he owed Richard Mille. They were the ones who had boldly taken a massive gamble on him back when he was a completely unknown nobody racing in GP3. Perhaps in the future, he would acquire countless other massive corporate sponsors, undoubtedly including some of the most terrifying, elite global conglomerates on the planet. But none of them would ever be the Richard Mille who had believed in him when he had absolutely nothing.

Commercial sponsorships were one thing. Business is business. But entirely separate from those cold, calculated corporate transactions... some things were fundamentally irreplaceable—

Worth their weight in gold.

From Kai’s perspective, this supposedly ”massive, agonizing crisis” wasn’t actually an issue at all.

Lebasque honestly struggled to find the words to accurately express his emotions.

Seeing Kai actually standing right here in front of him, Lebasque felt a massive wave of relief. Yet, deep down, a tiny, irrational sliver of anxiety refused to completely dissipate.

He looked up and caught the soft, reassuring smile playing in Kai’s eyes. Lebasque shook his head gently, offering a slightly helpless smile. ”Kai, you do realize... that is LVMH.”

Kai shrugged casually. ”Lucien, you are Richard Mille.”

A single, incredibly simple sentence. But it was more than enough to completely shatter Lebasque’s final reservations. He couldn’t hold it back any longer. A massive, brilliant smile completely consumed his face.

Before Lebasque could even formulate a response, a loud, vibrant, incredibly energetic voice boomed from right beside them. ”Oh... this is genuinely heartbreaking. To think our profound friendship carries such a pathetic, microscopic amount of weight.”

Lebasque snapped his head around and immediately spotted Frédéric Arnault. He momentarily froze, his brain scrambling. Had they really just been caught red-handed gossiping behind his back?

Kai, however, immediately broke into a massive smile. ”As expected from the heir to a multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate. You actually manage to quantify human friendship into exact financial metrics. I am profoundly, deeply honored.”

Watching the two men immediately launch into rapid-fire, sarcastic banter, Lebasque felt a surge of panic. The razor-sharp, underlying tension in their exchange made his skin crawl.

But a microsecond later, he saw Arnault’s smile bloom completely. He didn’t look offended in the slightest. ”Classic Kai. You absolutely refuse to surrender a single inch in a verbal spar, do you?”

Arnault proactively stepped forward. Following traditional French etiquette, he offered warm embraces to both Lebasque and Kai. He was wearing an immaculate, light-grey double-breasted suit that looked incredibly formal and breathtakingly expensive. He effortlessly radiated the elegant, refined aura of a true European aristocrat.

Kai carefully, meticulously looked Arnault up and down. He didn’t bother hiding the genuine surprise in his eyes. ”What exactly are you doing here? What about your massive superyacht party? A party without its host... are you absolutely certain that isn’t a catastrophic faux pas?”
