F1: The Speed Legend

The air momentarily thickened. The only sound remaining was the sea breeze rustling loudly.

The ambient noise vanished completely in the blink of an eye. Everything went silent. They could clearly hear the faint, muffled sounds of the party drifting through the glass balcony doors, and the distant hum of traffic from the streets below. But the words that had just fallen against her eardrums slowly rippled outward, sending layer after layer of waves across the tranquil lake of her mind.

Anya’s swinging legs slowly came to a halt.

But the pause lasted for merely a fraction of a second before her legs resumed their rhythmic swinging. ”Of course.” The answer was not only affirmative, but entirely unapologetic. Anya turned her head, looking at Kai with open, bold confidence.

”Otherwise, what do you think? Do you honestly believe I’m unemployed? That I flew all the way to Monaco simply to passively observe a car race?”

”My dear Mr. Kai, I am absolutely not Brad Pitt. I have a very demanding job. I do not possess that level of luxurious free time.”

The deliberately serious, almost clinical tone of her voice seemed explicitly designed to mask the frantic, violently erratic hammering of her heart against her ribs.

The smile deep within Kai’s eyes slowly, steadily surfaced. ”Actually, a simple phone call would have sufficed. Or even a text message.”

”Haha! In this modern era, who actually sends text messages anymore?” Anya laughed out loud.

Kai silently raised his right hand.

Anya froze, then laughed even harder, involuntarily leaning backward. ”Classic Kai. You consistently refuse to operate like a normal human being.”

She laughed so hard that her upper body leaned back too far. She completely lost her balance. Kai instinctively shot his hand out, grabbing Anya’s left arm, and yanked her violently forward.

Anya stumbled back toward him. Catching the fleeting, genuine panic flashing in Kai’s eyes, she couldn’t help but grin. ”The man who is preparing to physically dance with the Grim Reaper at 300 km/h this weekend actually experiences moments of intense panic. Please, relax. There’s an extended terrace platform directly below us, and the swimming pool is right past that. We are perfectly safe.”

Kai let out a soft sigh of relief and seamlessly fired back a joke. ”I am highly proficient in speed; that is a documented fact. However, I have not yet mastered the skill of independent flight. If a catastrophic situation arose, I absolutely cannot guarantee I’d be able to execute a flawless ’You jump, I jump’ routine.”

”Hahaha!” Anya burst into laughter again.

Looking at Kai now, Anya finally felt the lingering tension in her chest completely evaporate. She knew with absolute certainty that Kai hadn’t been psychologically shaken.

”You know exactly how the internet operates. If you read the comments on social media, they make it sound exactly like the literal end of the world. And even if it isn’t the apocalypse, they’ll aggressively manufacture a narrative claiming it is. From the outside, the situation appears catastrophically dire. Everything looks like it’s teetering on the edge of total collapse. The newly crowned World Champion is currently absorbing an unimaginably insane, toxic amount of pressure.”

”A phone call or a text message simply wouldn’t carry enough weight.”

In just a few brief sentences, Anya didn’t bother offering a long, emotional monologue detailing her exact thought process. Yet, the profound, genuine concern radiating from her words was undeniable.

As an outsider, Anya couldn’t truly, viscerally comprehend the suffocating pressure of the Formula 1 paddock. But she fully understood that entering the 2019 season, the astronomical expectations and the blinding global spotlight focused entirely on Kai were fundamentally different. It was an explosive, tenfold, or even hundredfold amplification. Everything had violently shifted. After finally clawing out a miraculous, momentum-shifting victory in Shanghai, they had immediately been plunged right back into the agonizing, familiar nightmare in Baku and Barcelona. The aggressive, relentless onslaught from both Mercedes-Benz and Red Bull was completely suffocating.

Even as a mere spectator, Anya felt like she could barely breathe.

Kai tilted his chin up slightly. ”It appears a certain young lady hasn’t been neglecting her daily dose of motorsport news this year.”

Anya was left momentarily speechless, but she ultimately failed to suppress her smile. The corners of her mouth curved upward. ”I even formally subscribed to Sky Sports and ESPN.”

Kai tilted his head, adopting an expression of profound, serious contemplation. ”I could be misremembering this, but I’m fairly certain ESPN doesn’t even possess the broadcasting rights for Formula 1.”

Anya: ... ”Well, that explains a lot! My timeline has been completely overwhelmed by American football!”

”Hahaha!” Kai completely lost control, clapping his hands together and roaring with laughter. After finally managing to rein in his amusement, he looked at Anya, attempting to maintain a serious, diplomatic posture. ”So, now that you’ve officially arrived in person, exactly what kind of mystical power are you planning to transmit to me?”

Anya froze. It took her a half-second to process the joke. Her immediate, instinctual reaction was to punch Kai solidly in the shoulder, but she ultimately couldn’t suppress a loud, genuine laugh.

”Kai!”

It was exactly like a string of firecrackers detonating. It took her a long moment to finally regain her composure.

Anya looked back at Kai. During the entire flight to Monaco, her brain had been completely chaotic. Even before making the sudden, decisive choice to embark on this trip, her head had been swamped with conflicting thoughts. Exactly like motorsport, Hollywood was a vicious, cutthroat industry completely saturated with toxic rumors and crushing pressure. The stress was omnipresent. She found herself constantly, involuntarily thinking of the wildly arrogant figure who dared to aggressively pilot a yacht, fully embracing the ocean and the sky. She desperately, singularly wanted to be physically present by his side.

However, now that she was actually standing here, looking directly at Kai, all the complex, emotionally heavy monologues she had prepared simply evaporated into the night breeze.

”Just be yourself,” Anya said simply.

A thousand complex emotions and countless words had been ultimately condensed into that single, profoundly simple sentence. Kai was Kai. The singular, completely unique, and fundamentally irreplaceable Kai. He absolutely did not need to allow the chaotic, toxic noise of the outside world to shake his resolve.

Kai looked mildly surprised. ”Is that it?” He deliberately manufactured an expression of profound, tragic disappointment.

Anya attempted to maintain a stern face, but her lips betrayed her, curving into a wide smile. She threw her hands in the air. ”Alright, fine. I confess. My actual, unfiltered internal monologue was significantly less elegant.”

”Tell all those [BEEP]ing [BEEP]s on the internet to go [BEEP] themselves. I want to [BEEP]ing grab them by the [BEEP] and violently [BEEP] their [BEEP]ing [BEEP]...”

Beep. Beep. Beep. An absolute barrage of wildly creative, obscenely graphic profanities exploded from her mouth exactly like rapid-fire artillery. Miraculously, she delivered the massive, blistering tirade without repeating a single curse word. The truly breathtaking element wasn’t the sheer vulgarity; it was the stunningly diverse, incredibly specific methods of physical and psychological humiliation she invented. She ruthlessly verbally eviscerated the toxic internet trolls from every conceivable angle.

The sheer, unrestrained ferocity of the outburst was genuinely jaw-dropping.

Furthermore, she wasn’t finished. ”Kai! You just keep being your [BEEP]ing self! And let all those [BEEP]ing miserable haters rot in absolute hell!”

Anya threw her head back, staring straight up at the night sky, and roared exactly like a werewolf howling at a full moon.

Finally, she was finished.

Anya turned her attention back to Kai. Having successfully vented her frustrations in a single, explosive breath, her cheeks were slightly flushed. Her eyes were blindingly bright as she stared at Kai. He could practically hear the blood boiling in her veins.

Then, moving in total, absolute silence, Kai took a single, deliberate step to the side, carefully creating a safe physical distance between them.

A single, microscopic movement. It required zero verbal response, but the comedic timing was absolutely flawless. Anya completely lost her battle for composure. She burst into wild, uninhibited laughter, doubling over and rocking back and forth.

Only then did Kai step back into his original position. He nodded, his expression one of profound, serious evaluation. ”Maximum power output. I firmly believe you should immediately register to compete in the World’s Strongest Man Guinness World Record challenge.”

Anya flawlessly mirrored his serious expression, resting her chin on her hand in deep contemplation. ”Right? I’ve been thinking the exact same thing. I firmly believe I possess the raw talent to rewrite the entire Guinness record book.”

After the massive explosion of laughter finally subsided, they fell into silence. Neither of them spoke. They simply stood side-by-side, staring quietly out over the horizon.

The night sky was exactly like a massive expanse of deep-blue velvet. The Mediterranean Sea, shimmering under the soft moonlight, rippled with a tranquil, gentle rhythm. The faint, rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the shoreline drifted toward them. In the distance, they could clearly see the massive, brilliantly illuminated superyacht docked in the harbor. It seemed to aggressively monopolize the entire visual splendor of the city of Monaco.

Even though the chaotic, suffocating noise of the party continued to churn all around them, in this specific, microscopic moment, the world felt profoundly peaceful. The massive, infinite universe seemed to have shrunk until it contained only the two of them. They stood quietly, listening to the relentless passage of time echoing in the rhythm of the waves. Standing before the sheer magnitude of the universe, humanity felt so incredibly small, inspiring an involuntary sense of profound humility. Yet, simultaneously, they felt capable of spreading their arms wide and freely navigating that infinite expanse.

Prosperity. Chaos. Surging tides. Boiling passion.

The collective, blinding spotlight of the entire globe was currently focused entirely on this tiny, palm-sized city of Monaco. The annual, absolute pinnacle event of the Formula 1 calendar was about to officially commence. Even though Monaco was always incredibly chaotic and completely saturated with global celebrities during this specific weekend, this year somehow managed to elevate the spectacle to an entirely new, unprecedented stratosphere. If you weren’t physically present in Monaco right now, it genuinely felt as though you had been completely, violently expelled from elite global high society.

And even if, due to unavoidable professional or personal obligations, you couldn’t physically attend... regardless of which isolated corner of the globe you were currently occupying, the topic of Monaco dominated every conversation.

Because of Mercedes-Benz’s terrifying dominance. Because of Red Bull’s violent resurgence. Because of the brutal, bayonets-drawn, three-way bloodbath currently defining the battle for the World Championship. Even though Kai and Ferrari currently appeared to be severely trapped on the back foot, facing a massive disadvantage... this time, absolutely no one with a genuine understanding of the sport dared to ignore Kai’s terrifying presence.

”Have you seriously forgotten what happened here in Monaco last year?”

If there was a single driver on the entire grid capable of orchestrating an impossible miracle and violently overturning the board in Monaco... it was absolutely, undeniably Kai!

...

”...Everything is perfectly in position! Every single car has officially formed up on the starting grid! The drivers are securely strapped into their cockpits!”

”According to the official meteorological radar, there is a staggering 90% probability of rain during the race. Monaco is already a circuit fundamentally defined by chaos and catastrophe. Today, it is highly likely we will face a massive influx of terrifying, entirely unpredictable variables.”

The 2019 Monaco Grand Prix was seconds away from officially commencing—

Zhou Guanyu cast a brief, anxious glance toward the sky. It was completely overcast, a dense, suffocating blanket of dark, heavy gray. The entire world seemed to be viewed through a murky, oppressive filter. Not a single ray of sunlight pierced the gloom. The air was practically stagnant; there wasn’t even a whisper of a breeze. The heavy, rolling heatwaves continuously stacked upon each other, creating an intensely frustrating, suffocating atmosphere. It felt exactly like a massive pressure cooker preparing to detonate.

A profound, gnawing sense of unease continuously writhed in the pit of his stomach.

Standing next to him, Hubert noticed the anxiety. He gently bumped his shoulder against Zhou Guanyu’s. ”Relax. If the race devolves into absolute, unpredictable chaos, that actually heavily favors Kai’s driving style.”

”Don’t forget, during our GP3 days, he consistently demonstrated an absolute, terrifying mastery of navigating through pure chaos to violently carve out a path to victory.”

Zhou Guanyu shot Hubert a long, analyzing look, but ultimately chose to remain silent.

Hubert instantly decoded the silence and quickly added an addendum. ”Even here in Monaco.” He paused, carefully considering his words. ”Or perhaps it’s vastly more accurate to say... especially in Monaco. After all, out of the twenty drivers currently sitting on that grid, he is the only one who genuinely, literally forged his racing skills on the public streets.”

That tiny, lighthearted joke finally successfully broke Zhou Guanyu’s tension. He couldn’t help but crack a smile.

Before the Formula 1 event officially commenced, the F2 support races in Monaco had successfully concluded. In the recently finished Sprint Race, Hubert had secured the ultimate victory, claiming his very first F2 championship trophy.

Zhou Guanyu had delivered an equally phenomenal performance, crossing the finish line right behind Hubert to secure P2. During the off-season, he had been terrifyingly close to missing out on an F2 seat for the second consecutive year. But now, the young Chinese driver was fiercely gripping this opportunity. He was brilliantly showcasing his talent on the F2 stage, utilizing concrete, undeniable results to silence his critics and definitively prove his ultimate value.

With the F2 weekend concluded, they didn’t leave the paddock. Both Zhou Guanyu and Hubert were currently standing inside the Ferrari pit garage, enjoying an exclusive, front-row seat to the absolute main event of the weekend.

Clearly, the weather gods were not in a cooperative mood. The massive probability of rain injected a terrifying layer of unpredictable volatility into the Monaco Grand Prix.

Furthermore, Ferrari had suffered a disastrous opening to the weekend. They had encountered massive, catastrophic struggles during Qualifying. Looking at the current atmospheric conditions, it didn’t appear as though the weather was preparing to offer them a miraculous lifeline.

”Now, let us briefly review the official starting grid for today’s Grand Prix.”

”Lewis Hamilton starts from Pole Position. Valtteri Bottas lines up alongside him in P2. Mercedes-Benz once again ruthlessly monopolizes the front row of the grid.”

”Max Verstappen secures P3. Kai lines up in P4. For the second consecutive race, the Number 33 Red Bull driver has successfully defeated the reigning World Champion in Qualifying.”

”Alex Albon claims P5, securing his absolute best Qualifying result of the season. Kevin Magnussen starts in P6, as Haas once again aggressively asserts themselves at the absolute front of the midfield battle.”

For the die-hard racing fans and the casual observers who had been desperately praying to witness another impossible miracle in Monaco, Qualifying had been... profoundly, bitterly disappointing.

To be brutally accurate, Ferrari had looked incredibly sluggish and off the pace starting entirely from Free Practice. This was especially true for Kai.

During the previous round in Barcelona, following the introduction of Ferrari’s massive aerodynamic upgrade package, their absolute top-speed advantage on the straights had been severely compromised. Originally, they had possessed a massive, undeniable advantage in Qualifying; in Bahrain, they had even completely monopolized the front row. But now, that advantage had been entirely vaporized. Consequently, Mercedes-Benz—a team historically considered relatively vulnerable in Qualifying—was now enjoying a massive, dominant lead.

Once upon a time, everyone in the paddock knew that Kai loved to aggressively ’sandbag’ during Free Practice, deliberately running heavier fuel loads and conservative engine modes to mask his true pace, before quietly unleashing a terrifying surprise in Qualifying. But now, the paddock was slowly coming to a grim realization: Kai was no longer deploying tactical smokescreens. His agonizing struggles in Free Practice... were entirely genuine.

Everything was exactly as the elite technical analysts had predicted. The fundamental direction of the SF90’s aerodynamic upgrades was completely flawed. Ferrari had actively crippled their own ultimate weapon.

Historically, in Monaco, Qualifying pace was prioritized above absolutely everything else. If a driver could successfully secure Pole Position, the statistical probability of converting that into a race victory was incredibly, overwhelmingly high. This specific circuit profile should have presented Ferrari with a massive, golden opportunity.

However, what was the brutal, agonizing reality?

First: The fundamental DNA of the SF90 was highly incompatible with street circuits. On the abrasive, uneven asphalt of city streets, the catastrophic tire degradation issues were massively amplified.

Second: The SF90’s fatal lack of mechanical grip in low-to-medium-speed corners had been a massive, glaring vulnerability since the season opener. Consequently, Monaco was arguably the absolute worst possible circuit layout on the entire calendar for this specific chassis.

Third: The fundamentally flawed aerodynamic upgrade path had violently sacrificed their single-lap Qualifying advantage. This acted as the ultimate, fatal blow, aggressively shattering whatever lingering competitive edge Ferrari possessed.

A massive wave of vicious criticism instantly erupted. ”The glaring, undeniable question currently demanding an answer is this: Why on Earth did Ferrari actively choose Barcelona to introduce these massive upgrades? Only to subsequently suffer back-to-back, catastrophic disasters in both Barcelona and Monaco? Did their engineering department genuinely fail to consider the highly specific characteristics of these circuits before blindly, recklessly throwing untested components onto the car?”

Criticism upon criticism. Attack upon attack.

Strictly speaking, Kai’s agonizing struggles during Free Practice weren’t genuinely surprising. If the core mechanical foundation of the chassis is fundamentally flawed, it’s flawed. Even if Ayrton Senna were miraculously resurrected and put behind the wheel, the car would still be a disaster.

The only slight surprise was that Leclerc actually delivered a highly impressive performance during Free Practice. Exactly as he had done in Baku, the young prodigy once again put his phenomenal, raw single-lap speed on full display. His ability to violently push the absolute limits of a flawed chassis during Qualifying simulations was undeniably breathtaking. But ’impressive’ in this highly specific context was entirely relative to Kai’s struggles. Ferrari’s absolute fastest lap was still completely, hopelessly incapable of challenging Mercedes-Benz for Pole Position.

Qualifying... was an absolute disaster.

Perhaps not a total, apocalyptic catastrophe, but undeniably a disaster completely saturated in chaos and failure.

Leclerc was shockingly eliminated in Q1. It was an even more humiliating, catastrophic failure than his Q2 crash in Baku. However, this time, the blame didn’t rest on Leclerc’s shoulders. The culprit was a catastrophic mechanical failure.

During Q1, Leclerc only managed to complete a single flying lap before the chassis suffered a terminal issue. He limped back into the pit garage and never returned to the track. He was officially eliminated.

For Leclerc, competing at his ultimate home race, this was a complete, agonizing disaster. This was the very first time in his professional career he had tackled the streets of Monaco wearing the iconic red firesuit of Ferrari. The gentle, white lie he had whispered to his father on his deathbed had finally manifested into reality. His burning desire and absolute motivation to deliver a spectacular performance were stronger than they had ever been in his entire life. Yet, the brutal reality was that he hadn’t even been granted the opportunity to complete a second flying lap. Out in Q1.

Everyone in the paddock knew the brutal truth: overtaking in Monaco was practically a mathematical impossibility. A catastrophic Qualifying result essentially guaranteed a hopelessly compromised, agonizing race on Sunday.

Following the highly anticipated introduction of their massive upgrade package in Barcelona, Ferrari hadn’t miraculously overturned the board. Instead, they had plunged even deeper into the abyss. The terrifying performance gap separating them from their rivals was rapidly expanding.

Obviously, this was catastrophically bad news.

The crushing weight of the entire organization’s expectations now rested entirely on Kai’s shoulders.

During the critical, high-pressure final moments of Q3, Kai once again displayed the aura of a true hero. He absorbed the massive, suffocating pressure and successfully extracted a flawless, limit-shattering flying lap. He ultimately secured P4, lining up on the second row of the grid.

P4 was absolutely not an outstanding result. For an organization like Ferrari, whose sole, singular objective was securing the World Championship, it was undeniably, bitterly disappointing. Absolutely no one in Maranello was going to pop champagne and celebrate a P4 finish.

But at the very least, it prevented the team from sliding completely off the cliff into total irrelevance.

The true, terrifying crisis staring them in the face wasn’t the fact that Verstappen had successfully secured P3. The genuine nightmare was the terrifying speed at which the performance gap between Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz was expanding.

The W10 was operating in an entirely different, vastly superior stratosphere. They were completely, mockingly untouchable.

If the Monaco Qualifying session was a bitter, agonizing pill for the Tifosi to swallow, for the Mercedes-Benz fanbase, it was an absolute, unhinged carnival.

The entirety of Q3 was basically an exclusive, private duel entirely between Hamilton and Bottas. Whether it was Ferrari or Red Bull, the raw pace of the challengers simply did not exist in the same universe as Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz—the team that supposedly ”struggled” in Qualifying this season—had utterly, violently monopolized the Qualifying session for the Monaco Grand Prix.

The only genuine suspense regarding P1 and P2 revolved entirely around which specific Mercedes-Benz driver would claim the prize—

The ultimate Pole Position lap time was 0.475 seconds faster than Verstappen, and a massive 0.781 seconds faster than Kai.

Yes, those numbers were entirely accurate. The timing screens were not malfunctioning. In the hyper-competitive world of Formula 1, where the performance delta between teams is typically measured in thousandths of a second, Mercedes-Benz was currently mockingly, terrifyingly out of reach. They were utilizing a performance of absolute, overwhelming dominance to violently defend the ’alien-tier’ status of their chassis. The 2019 season increasingly looked as though it was going to be an exclusive, uninterrupted Mercedes-Benz monologue.

It wasn’t just Pole Position. The P2 lap time was 0.389 seconds faster than Verstappen, and 0.695 seconds faster than Kai.

Equally operating in a completely different, untouchable realm. In other words, whether it was Red Bull or Ferrari, Verstappen or Kai... from the green light in Q1 to the checkered flag in Q3, they had never even entered Mercedes-Benz’s peripheral vision. The Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying session was entirely an internal sparring match. Mercedes-Benz was simply entertaining themselves.

Despite the massive, undeniable performance advantage, when Hamilton successfully defeated Bottas to claim Pole Position, he uncharacteristically erupted into a massive, aggressive celebration. He clenched his fists and screamed, reacting exactly as if he had just secured the ultimate World Championship crown.

1:10.166. Hamilton absolutely obliterated the all-time Monaco lap record to secure Pole Position!

”AHHH!”

Returning to the pit lane and climbing out of the cockpit, Hamilton tightly clenched both fists, leaped high into the air, and let out a raw, passionate, roaring scream.

”AHHHHHHH!”

However, it seemed as though a single scream wasn’t nearly enough to vent the massive, suffocating pressure that had been building inside his chest. Hamilton actually scaled the massive catch fencing, climbing high above the pit wall to violently celebrate alongside the completely unhinged Mercedes-Benz fans packing the grandstands. The fencing shook violently under his weight, looking terrifyingly close to collapsing. The track security personnel completely panicked. They swarmed the area in a massive, chaotic rush, forming a human cushion directly beneath him, absolutely terrified that the iconic celebration was about to end in a catastrophic disaster.

The entire paddock stared in profound, absolute shock.

Seeing Hamilton lose his composure to this extreme degree, acting with such raw, unhinged fanaticism and completely ignoring his carefully cultivated, ultra-professional public image, was genuinely jarring. Back in his younger days, when he was still the fiery, unpredictable ’Young Hamilton,’ this type of explosive emotional display was relatively common. But as he matured into the seasoned, calculating ’Veteran Hamilton,’ that specific, highly volatile persona had been meticulously suppressed. This was especially true following Rosberg’s retirement; this level of raw emotion was almost never seen.

But today?

In Monaco, the performance gap between Mercedes-Benz and their competitors was astronomically massive. They weren’t even engaged in a genuine battle. It was no exaggeration to say they were standing at the absolute summit, desperately searching for a worthy opponent. Hamilton possessed one, and only one, genuine rival: Valtteri Bottas. Therefore, the underlying reason for Hamilton’s massive, unhinged loss of composure was glaringly obvious.

Shanghai, Baku, Barcelona. Bottas had secured a brutal, devastating three-race Qualifying streak. He had successfully defeated Hamilton to claim Pole Position three consecutive times. Combine that with his dominant victory at the season opener in Melbourne, and it was undeniable: the completely reinvented, highly aggressive 2019 iteration of Valtteri Bottas was launching a massive, full-scale assault on Hamilton’s throne. His claim that he was actively hunting for the World Championship wasn’t merely an empty PR slogan.

Since the season began, Hamilton had maintained a polished, professional facade. But the crushing, suffocating pressure and the relentless barrage of attacks had been continuously accumulating. Dealing with the terrifying, unpredictable threat of Kai was already causing him massive headaches. But now, Bottas—who had historically been a compliant, obedient wingman—was actively, aggressively challenging his absolute authority within the team. Trapped between a relentless external threat and a vicious internal rebellion, Hamilton was besieged on all sides.

It felt exactly like being violently transported back to the nightmare of the 2007 season. That was undeniably a season Hamilton absolutely refused to recall, and was utterly terrified of repeating.

Finally!

Here in Monaco, for the very first time since Melbourne, Hamilton had successfully secured Pole Position. The complex, highly volatile mixture of profound relief and explosive adrenaline currently surging through his veins was something probably only he could truly comprehend.

Furthermore, there was another, vastly more profound layer to the emotion.

Just days before the Monaco Grand Prix officially commenced, the legendary Formula 1 icon, Niki Lauda, passed away peacefully in the hospital at the age of seventy.

Within the realm of Formula 1, Lauda was an absolute titan. He was a driver whose name had been permanently etched into the Hall of Fame decades ago. His legacy extended far beyond his three World Championship titles. Born into a wealthy Austrian family, he defied their aggressive opposition, abandoning the luxurious safety of his heritage. Relying entirely on his sheer, unadulterated racing talent and his phenomenal technical understanding of the machinery, he violently conquered the elite engineering teams, carving out his own legendary space within the paddock and launching a career that would permanently alter the history of the sport.

The most universally revered, genuinely awe-inspiring chapter of Lauda’s legendary career undoubtedly occurred in 1976. He suffered a massive, catastrophic accident at the Nürburgring, sustaining horrific burns and multiple severe bone fractures. He was permanently, heavily scarred, and he teetered terrifyingly close to the edge of death. Yet, miraculously, he only missed two Grand Prix before violently forcing his way back into the cockpit. He ultimately lost the championship that year by a single, agonizing point.

For the general public, the Hollywood blockbuster film ’Rush’ provided the most visceral, accessible window into the life of this legendary driver.

Naturally, Lauda’s legendary exploits extended far beyond the cockpit. He even founded an entire commercial airline bearing his own name, fueled by his lifelong, burning passion for aviation.

During his active driving career, Lauda’s legacy was inextricably linked to Ferrari. Two of his three World Championship titles were won while driving for the Prancing Horse—the third was secured with McLaren. In 1993, he returned to Maranello to serve as a high-level consultant, playing a massively critical role in successfully guiding Ferrari back to the absolute summit of the sport.

However, for the younger generation of Formula 1 fans, Lauda’s iconic image was firmly, inextricably bonded to Mercedes-Benz.

During his tenure as the Non-Executive Chairman and senior consultant for the Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 team, he played a massively critical role in convincing Hamilton to leave McLaren and join the Silver Arrows. His fingerprints were deeply embedded in the foundational design and development of the revolutionary turbo-hybrid era chassis. He was the vital, brilliant architect operating behind the scenes when Mercedes-Benz violently dethroned Red Bull to claim their very first Constructors’ World Championship.

This pragmatic, heavily wrinkled old man, always wearing his iconic red cap, possessed an intrinsic value to the Mercedes-Benz organization that was utterly impossible to quantify.

But this week, Lauda had permanently closed his eyes.

It was impossible not to instantly recall the tragic events at Hockenheim last year, when Ferrari’s powerful CEO, Sergio Marchionne, had suddenly passed away. However, Lauda’s passing felt profoundly different. He wasn’t a distant, corporate overlord issuing commands from a high-rise office. He was a purebred racer who had spent his life operating on the absolute frontlines of the sport. Even after retiring, he remained a vital, active presence in the pit lane, constantly engaged with the drivers and engineers. He was one of the absolute most iconic, foundational pillars of the entire sport. Mercedes-Benz had suffered an unimaginable, catastrophic loss.

To be brutally accurate, it wasn’t just Mercedes-Benz. The entire paddock, and the global motorsport community as a whole, had suffered a massive, irreplaceable loss.

Including Ferrari.

Just moments ago, right before the official start of the Grand Prix, every single driver—from both Formula 1 and Formula 2—had gathered on the starting grid. Team Principals and pit crew members stood in solemn silence. The entire paddock participated in a minute of absolute, unified silence to honor the memory of Niki Lauda. The already gloomy, heavily overcast atmosphere of Monaco was now saturated with a profound, suffocating layer of heavy grief.

This year’s Monaco Grand Prix felt undeniably, profoundly different.

Despite the collective grief, Mercedes-Benz felt the loss most acutely. Hamilton felt it most profoundly.

Hamilton had even explicitly requested that the phrase ”For Niki” be painted directly onto the HALO device of his W10 chassis.

For Hamilton, the massive, chaotic collision of the intense championship pressure carrying over from last season, the brutal internal warfare of the current campaign, and the profound grief of losing a mentor had all violently detonated this specific weekend.

And so, the unprecedented scene had occurred. Even though it was only Qualifying, even though it was only Pole Position, Hamilton completely lost control of his emotions, indulging in a massive, unhinged display of raw passion that he hadn’t allowed himself to exhibit in years.

No verbal explanation was required. Anyone with functioning eyes could clearly see the reality. Hamilton was aggressively sharpening his blades. A massive, infernal fire was burning in his chest. He absolutely had to vent that destructive energy on the asphalt. If God stood in his way, he would kill God. If Buddha blocked his path, he would slaughter Buddha.

”This is not directed at anyone specifically. Every single person on this grid is entirely equal in my eyes. Anyone who attempts to impede my path will be violently destroyed.”

In truth, this was simply the brutal, daily reality of the Formula 1 paddock. Massive, lethal tension constantly spreading. A perpetual, bayonets-drawn standoff. The cutthroat, life-or-death struggle for supremacy was a constant, underlying reality. Combine that baseline tension with the endless barrage of catastrophic variables and technical failures... the unpredictable chaos constantly threatened to act as the spark that ignited a massive explosion. Every single week presented a completely new, terrifyingly complex puzzle that had to be solved.

Despite possessing a profound understanding of these mechanics, Ferrari was still trapped in a massive crisis. The situation was rapidly slipping through their fingers. Their ability to assert control over the overarching championship narrative was growing weaker by the second.

As a direct consequence, John Elkann had personally arrived in Monaco. You didn’t even need a functioning brain to predict exactly what was going to happen if Ferrari failed to deliver a spectacular result today.

Simply standing near the Ferrari pit garage was enough to physically feel the dense, suffocating tension and the burning anxiety radiating from the team. The invisible, lethal pressure was sharp enough to physically sting the skin. It was absolutely no wonder the smile on Zhou Guanyu’s face had slowly frozen, eventually mutating into a rigid, highly awkward grimace.

”—So, Martin. What is your ultimate, definitive prediction for today’s race?”

”I am still maintaining a massive sense of anticipation. I still firmly believe that Kai is fully capable of delivering a spectacular surprise.”

”My dear Martin. Are you absolutely certain about that? We are currently in Monaco. Mercedes-Benz is currently projecting an aura of completely unbelievable, tyrannical dominance. This is an entirely different reality than the one we witnessed at Albert Park.”

”Obviously, I am fully aware of the context. I am absolutely not stating with absolute, mathematical certainty that Kai is guaranteed to achieve a specific result. My core argument is simply this: Kai will absolutely not meekly surrender and abandon the fight without attempting a massive, highly aggressive strategic gamble. And it isn’t just Kai; Max will inevitably do exactly the same thing. Even here in Monaco, both of these fiercely aggressive young drivers will undeniably possess the sheer courage to launch an attack. Do not forget: while overtaking on this circuit is mathematically improbable, it is absolutely not impossible. Furthermore, Monaco is globally infamous for one other, highly specific characteristic.”

”Catastrophic accidents! Ha! That is undeniably a factual statement. Although we miraculously avoided a Safety Car deployment here last year, statistically, Monaco remains one of the circuits with the absolute highest probability of triggering a Safety Car intervention across the entire calendar. Combine that historical data with the terrifying 90% probability of rain today... Exactly when will the rain start falling? Which specific sectors of the track will be hit the hardest? How long will the downpour last? Every single one of these catastrophic variables possesses the raw potential to completely, violently shatter the established order of the race.”

The back-and-forth banter was rapid, intense, and practically overflowing with hot-blooded excitement.

A vocal minority of cynical fans were already impatiently complaining online. ”Mercedes-Benz secures a flawless 1-2 finish. Williams continues to languish hopelessly in dead last. It’s the exact same, agonizingly predictable outcome. This is guaranteed to be the absolute most boring, tedious procession of the entire year.” But the commentators in the broadcast booth fundamentally disagreed. Their eager, burning anticipation continued to boil over.

Five. Four. Three. Two. One.

Amidst the massive, chaotic roar of the engines. The five red lights simultaneously illuminated.
