F1: The Speed Legend

What was Toto Wolff’s ultimate weapon in the paddock?

Mathematics.

To outsiders, Wolff’s background as a pure businessman was a glaring weakness. In reality, it was exactly his greatest strength. Because he wasn’t blinded by the romanticized, emotional history of the sport, he could step back, analyze the situation with cold, objective detachment, and use pure, unadulterated mathematics to calculate the optimal decision.

The current crisis was exactly that kind of situation.

Mercedes-Benz’s hesitation and wavering essentially boiled down to Wolff desperately wanting a flawless, undisputed, totally dominant victory to serve as their season-opening manifesto. But now, Wolff instantly recognized the brutal reality and adjusted his expectations. He knew the ”Grand Slam” and the ”Total Slam” were officially dead. They needed to pivot. The sole, absolute priority was ensuring Hamilton won the race.

If absolutely necessary, Wolff would issue team orders, explicitly instructing Bottas to surrender his position on the track. He would ’persuade’ Bottas to be a good soldier and comply with the team’s overarching tactical objectives.

Therefore, Bottas wasn’t their primary problem. Kai was.

Once his priorities were realigned, Wolff immediately displayed his ruthless, decisive executive ability. He issued the orders without a second of hesitation. The Mercedes-Benz pit box instantly snapped into methodical, hyper-efficient action. Within ten seconds, everyone was perfectly in position.

Eyes narrowed into slits, Wolff stared intently at the Number 22 car on the track monitor.

Just as expected. He was pushing—

Choosing to pit on Lap 12 was clearly a meticulously calculated window selected by Kai and the Ferrari pit wall. Rejoining the track, Kai emerged directly into the gap between Verstappen and Leclerc, perfectly dropping into a pocket of clean air.

Thanks to the blistering pace Kai had set during his aggressive pursuit of Hamilton, the top four drivers had pulled massively ahead of the rest of the field. The gap between Verstappen and Leclerc had ballooned to nearly fifteen seconds. Therefore, when Kai exited the pits, he found himself roughly six seconds behind Verstappen and just under ten seconds ahead of Leclerc. A completely unobstructed, pristine operational window.

He had temporarily dropped to fourth, losing only a single position.

More importantly, this meant Kai now had the clean air necessary to unleash the car and sprint flat out.

Clearly, Kai wasn’t going to waste this golden opportunity. Without a microsecond of hesitation, he instantly shifted into maximum attack mode. Even though the newly fitted yellow Medium tires required time to reach their optimal operating temperature window, he aggressively cycled through his engine push modes.

This was exactly how Kai operated. When he had optimal grip, he wrung the absolute limit out of the car. When he lacked grip, he simply found entirely different, unorthodox methods to keep pushing.

Sprinting! Charging!

Even a layman like Wolff didn’t need to look at the telemetry data. Simply watching the aggressive, razor-sharp lines the red Ferrari was carving across the asphalt was enough to see the difference. Kai’s fangs were fully bared. He was holding absolutely nothing back, putting his transcendental talent on full, glorious display.

Pressure!

Crushing, overwhelming, suffocating pressure. That arrogant, unbridled, aggressive youth burned brilliantly under the golden Melbourne sun, projecting a terrifying aura that crashed down squarely onto the Mercedes-Benz pit wall. The rhythmic beating of their hearts was violently disrupted.

Wolff couldn’t help but look out toward the pit box, staring at the empty patch of concrete where the tire changes occurred—

Lap 13. Hamilton dives into the pits!

The entire venue erupted in a massive gasp of shock, because Hamilton was the only driver to pit on Lap 13. This meant the proxy war between Hamilton and Kai was officially escalating to its absolute climax, instantly reducing every other team and driver on the grid to mere background extras.

However, Wolff remained entirely unmoved. He kept his eyes locked firmly on the Number 44 car until it completed the stop and accelerated away. Then, he smoothly shifted his gaze to the television monitors, tracking the silver machine as it rocketed down the pit exit lane, preparing to rejoin the track.

At the very end of the main straight, that brilliant splash of red appeared, charging forward with terrifying, earth-shattering momentum.

Standing at the apex of Turn 1, the Jones Chicane, and looking back up the straight: silver on the left, red on the right. Despite their different positions and differing speeds, in this specific, frozen microsecond, it created the breathtaking illusion of two streaks of light hurtling toward a violent collision, radiating a rolling heatwave of pure, unadulterated aggression.

Closer—rapidly closing—

The red car was slightly faster. You could viscerally feel Kai physically pushing the absolute boundaries of the machine’s limits.

The silver car remained steady, icy, and completely composed. Even though it was trailing by a microscopic fraction, the gap was almost imperceptible to the naked eye.

And then! Both cars entered Turn 1 side-by-side, absolutely neck and neck!

No braking. Still no braking.

”My God!”

”Extreme late braking! Kai is braking at the absolute limit, and Hamilton is matching him exactly!”

”Both cars are on brand new, cold Medium tires! They clearly haven’t reached their optimal operating temperature, yet both drivers are engaging in brutal, close-quarters combat at Turn 1 without a shred of hesitation!”

”Neither is giving an inch!”

”Lock up!”

”Kai locks up slightly! Hamilton locks up slightly! Both cars lock up simultaneously!”

The screams and gasps of shock caught painfully in everyone’s throats!

Yet, Hamilton, occupying the inside line, hugged the apex. He utilized his extreme late-braking maneuver to firmly choke off the racing line. Relying entirely on his profound, unparalleled understanding of the W10’s tire operating window, he managed to extract a microscopic fraction of extra grip from the cold tires. Even while locking up, he utilized his superior track positioning to seize the absolute initiative.

In a fleeting fraction of a second, with a slight stagger in their trajectories, Hamilton exited Turn 1 first.

AH!

Wolff clenched his fists and let out a guttural, ferocious roar. Unable to control himself any longer, he bellowed like a wild animal.

AHHHHHHHHHH!

It was an incredibly rare sight! Wolff was pumping his fists and screaming in triumph over a single, opening-stint defensive maneuver, celebrating as if Hamilton had just won the entire Grand Prix.

The suffocating suppression, the agonizing frustration... the entire race had felt like being trapped in a chaotic, murky swamp. Now, he had finally found a release valve. Having successfully repelled Kai’s brutal frontal assault, Wolff lost control—or more accurately, he refused to exercise control. He joyously, cathartically released all his pent-up, suppressed emotion.

In an instant, the entire Mercedes-Benz garage erupted in wild celebration.

Borreipaire glanced sideways at the monitor, his face completely expressionless, but deep down, he secretly clenched his fist—

So far, everything was proceeding exactly according to plan.

If Kai’s undercut had actually succeeded, that would have been absolutely perfect. But from the very beginning, they had formulated their master plan based on the assumption that the undercut would fail. After all, on brand new, cold Medium tires, the SF90 simply couldn’t generate the necessary traction. Even with Kai wringing every ounce of speed out of the chassis, they still couldn’t match the mechanical grip of the Mercedes-Benz.

The W10 had once again showcased its terrifyingly massive margin for error, even on cold rubber.

The undercut failing was the statistically normal, expected outcome. But the suffocating pressure they had just buried deep within the Mercedes-Benz psyche was the true focal point. Because, as the chaser, the metronome of the race was now firmly gripped in Kai’s hands.

Conventional racing logic dictates that the race leader controls the rhythm. They can speed up when they want to, and slow down when they want to. Exactly like a marathon, if the leader’s pace advantage is absolute and crushing, they can use rhythmic fluctuations to completely destroy their competitors’ pacing and morale.

However, if the leader’s advantage is not absolutely crushing—if they are being tightly hunted by a chaser, and despite constantly altering their rhythm, they cannot shake the pursuit... then the roles reverse. The mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind. The chaser ultimately seizes total control of the race narrative.

The W10’s absolute performance advantage was undeniably crushing. If Ferrari allowed them to dictate the rhythm, this race could be declared over before it even began. Every other team on the grid would be fighting a bloody war just for the privilege of finishing third.

Therefore, from the very moment the lights went out today, Kai had been meticulously laying out a trap—

The aggressive start and overtake. The relentless, high-pressure pursuit. The shockingly early pit stop. The violent undercut attempt.

The ultimate objective behind every single one of these actions was identical: to violently shatter Mercedes-Benz’s operational rhythm.

Perhaps the only genuine surprise was Ferrari’s own tires. Honestly, Kai had actually been actively managing his pace while in aggressive pursuit. He originally believed he could easily stretch the Soft tires until at least Lap 15. But on Lap 11, without any prior warning, the degradation curve showed terrifying signs of a sheer, vertical cliff-drop, forcing him to pit prematurely on Lap 12.

Fortunately, while Ferrari experienced unexpected variables, so did Mercedes-Benz—

Bottas.

Bottas’s sudden, aggressive surge had injected a massive, unpredictable variable into the equation. It severely disrupted the judgment and decision-making process of the Mercedes-Benz strategy team. The resulting chaos prevented them from immediately seeing through Ferrari’s overarching strategy, which was an absolute godsend for Kai.

A massive, incredibly lucky break.

Step by step, Kai was systematically forcing Mercedes-Benz to feel the pressure. He was making them genuinely, viscerally feel the suffocating sensation of a noose tightening around their throats.

Now, they could officially enter Phase Two—

Continue the pursuit.

Hamilton: ???

”Oh, come on, man. What the hell is he doing?!”

”Everyone keeps calling him a baby, but does he actually think he is an infant? Even Verstappen wouldn’t make such amateurish, boneheaded mistakes on the track.”

Irritated. Profoundly, deeply irritated. Absolutely everything unfolding before him was incredibly annoying. Hamilton couldn’t hold it back; he finally snapped and started complaining over the radio.

Bottas. Kai. And the Grand Slam dream that had been completely obliterated on Lap 1. Even more absurdly, he still hadn’t managed to lead a single, complete lap of the race.

Clearly, this was absolutely not how Hamilton had envisioned the start of the Grand Prix.

The season opener was completely derailing. It violently resurrected the agonizing, traumatic memories of last season. Even a seasoned, icy veteran like Hamilton couldn’t help but feel his composure fraying at the edges.

And Kai—was back again.

Like a vengeful spirit refusing to pass on, relentless, unending... It was like an irritating fly constantly buzzing in his ear; no matter how aggressively he swatted at it, he couldn’t get rid of it.

Just a moment ago, Hamilton had decisively crushed Kai’s undercut attempt.

And immediately afterward, Kai was right back on his gearbox, posturing aggressively for yet another attack.

The race was only on Lap 14. There were over forty laps remaining. Furthermore, only Hamilton and Kai inside the points-paying positions had pitted. Every other driver was playing the long game, waiting it out. This meant that when their competitors eventually pitted for fresh rubber, they would possess vastly superior tire life in the closing stages of the race. If Hamilton and Kai weren’t incredibly careful, they could easily destroy their own races right here and now.

Therefore, right now, the absolute priority was controlling the pace and protecting the tires.

Hot-blooded aggression and blindly charging forward—those were the foolish, romanticized notions of amateurs. Experiencing this level of baffling, logic-defying recklessness firsthand on a Formula 1 circuit pushed Hamilton’s frustration to the absolute breaking point. He finally lost control of his emotions.

Furthermore—

From Free Practice to Qualifying, Ferrari’s single-lap pace had consistently lagged behind Mercedes-Benz. In Q3, even when Kai had wrung absolutely every ounce of potential out of the car, the massive performance gap between their machines remained crystal clear for everyone to see.

Of course, right now Hamilton wasn’t pushing flat out. He needed to maintain a sustainable rhythm and protect his tires, so his current lap times couldn’t be compared directly to Qualifying pace.

But even so, it shouldn’t be this easy for Ferrari to match Mercedes-Benz’s pace.

If they were running similar lap times, it meant the Ferrari was inevitably suffering significantly harsher degradation in other critical areas. ERS deployment? Tires?

Despite his irritation, Hamilton’s brain remained relatively clear. Operating at maximum capacity, his sharp instincts detected a hidden, lurking crisis amidst the chaos.

One possibility was that, exactly like last season, Ferrari’s long-run race pace was genuinely significantly stronger than their Qualifying pace. The other possibility was—

”Bono, are they setting up for a two-stop strategy?”

As the various hypotheses and possibilities surfaced, Hamilton instantly grasped the underlying inspiration.

Bono stared intently at the telemetry data cascading across his screens. ”It’s certainly a possibility. We can’t entirely rule it out.” He paused. ”But based on current projections, the probability is relatively low.”

Partially because Kai wasn’t pushing absolutely flat-out across the entire lap.

And partially because Leclerc had still not pitted.

The conclusion reached by the Mercedes-Benz strategy team behind the scenes was this: they believed Ferrari was confident in their long-run pace, and that Kai was also committing to a one-stop strategy. The reason Kai wasn’t recklessly, violently attacking right now was because he was actively protecting his tires. He was biding his time, acting like a coiled snake, waiting for the perfect, flawless opportunity to strike.

Therefore, Hamilton needed to calm down. His primary objective was to successfully defend his track position. After that, they would formulate a comprehensive plan for Hamilton based on Bottas’s track position—

They needed to ensure Hamilton could exploit the upcoming pit windows of Bottas and Verstappen to seamlessly reclaim the race lead.

It wasn’t going to be easy, and it required absolute, flawless synchronization between the pit wall and Hamilton. But they still had a massive opportunity to wrench this race back onto its intended, correct trajectory.

Over on the neighboring pit wall, if Borreipaire knew what the Mercedes-Benz strategy team was thinking, he would have bowed deeply and thanked them profusely for their misplaced trust.

If they believed that, then absolutely perfect.

Unfortunately, Borreipaire didn’t have the luxury of time to eavesdrop. His attention was entirely, 100% focused on Kai.

After the initial launch, Kai had maintained a suffocating pursuit without launching a genuine attack. The goal then was to apply relentless pressure, deploy smokescreens, and intentionally scramble the judgment of the Mercedes-Benz strategy team.

And now? Now, Kai was maintaining a suffocating pursuit without launching a genuine attack for two entirely different reasons. First, his new tires hadn’t fully reached their optimal operating temperature, rendering a true attack physically impossible. Second, they had to execute their overarching master plan. The moment he launched a genuine attack, their true strategy would be instantly exposed. It was only a matter of time before Mercedes-Benz and Wolff figured it out. Right now, the absolute, critical focus was maximizing the number of laps Kai could extract from this specific set of tires while maintaining an aggressive pace.

Therefore, Kai was waiting. Waiting for the perfect moment.

The first time, it was because he didn’t want to attack. This time, it was because he couldn’t attack.

Gradually, car after car began diving into the pit lane. Pirelli’s officially recommended pit window had arrived. The pit lane descended into a massive, frantic surge of activity.

Haas, Renault, Racing Point, Alfa Romeo, and the rest.

However, it was primarily the midfield teams. The leading pack remained entirely unmoved. Aside from Kai and Hamilton, the rest of the ’Big Three’ drivers held their ground, silently brewing a massive storm. It was particularly noteworthy that Ferrari’s Leclerc and Red Bull’s Albon appeared to be running entirely divergent strategies from their teammates—

In the broadcast booth, Croft and Brundle were intensely debating the differing strategies employed by the teams, and whether these young, inexperienced drivers could handle the crushing pressure.

”...I really don’t want to be that guy, constantly comparing every single young driver on the grid to Kai. After all, the reason a miracle is called a miracle is precisely because it’s so incredibly rare.”

”But.”

”I truly believe the Team Principals should draw massive inspiration from Kai. Perhaps they should start taking radically different, unorthodox strategic gambles with their young drivers. This fresh, aggressive, hot-blooded new generation is entirely capable of delivering massive, unexpected surprises.”

”And speaking of Kai—”

”Good God! Kai is right inside Hamilton’s DRS window!”

Completely engrossed in analyzing the broader race narrative, they had entirely failed to notice the passage of time. It felt like they had only looked away for a split second, but when the live feed cut back, they found the Number 22 and Number 44 cars violently tangled together in close-quarters combat.

Everything was playing out exactly as the world had hoped. In the season opener, the heavyweight, titanic clash between Kai and Hamilton was radiating a blinding, magnificent light, effortlessly stealing the show and illuminating all of Albert Park.

Lap 21. Just as the pit lane was descending into absolute, chaotic madness due to the mass influx of midfield cars pitting, Kai finally received the highly anticipated message over the radio.

”Green light. Push. Kai, push.” Borreipaire’s eyes were practically glued to his monitors, entirely consumed by the data, looking as if he wanted to physically dive into the screen.

”Copy,” Kai replied. Crisp, clean, and entirely devoid of unnecessary chatter.

However, Kai didn’t just blindly charge in.

Kai intimately understood Hamilton’s caliber. Even though Hamilton had been operating under immense, continuous pressure, that pressure also meant he was operating at a state of absolute, hyper-vigilance. Furthermore, Kai was certain Hamilton was actively attempting to overcut Bottas, meaning Hamilton’s single-lap pace remained highly aggressive.

If Kai acted recklessly and alerted Hamilton prematurely, executing the overtake would require a massive expenditure of energy. He might unnecessarily destroy his tires in the process, ultimately plunging himself into a severe strategic disadvantage.

If he doesn’t strike, he remains still. But the moment he strikes, it must be a lethal, one-hit kill.

By operating this way, amidst the incredibly complex, chaotic scenario where Hamilton couldn’t be certain if Kai was actually on a two-stop strategy, and the Mercedes-Benz strategy team couldn’t confirm if Hamilton should pivot to a two-stop strategy... Kai bought himself incredibly precious, vital breathing room.

Calm. Patient. Meticulous. Hyper-focused.

These were the keys.

Even though Borreipaire had given the green light, Kai didn’t launch a frantic, desperate assault.

Through Sector 1 (Ferrari’s strongest sector) and Sector 2 (Ferrari’s slightly less strong sector), he quietly, almost invisibly, closed the gap. He methodically chewed away the distance while remaining seemingly docile in Hamilton’s rearview mirrors. He didn’t make any aggressive, lunging moves. He maintained this precise, calculated approach all the way into Turn 10, relying on a beautiful, flawless corner exit and perfect throttle application.

In a flash, he closed the gap. He was firmly inside the DRS activation zone.

Buzz, buzz—buzz, buzz—

Hamilton instantly sensed the danger. He immediately prepared to accelerate, attempting to break the slipstream and shake off the pursuit. But he realized instantly: this was Turn 10. A massive, sweeping parabolic curve. It was also Albert Park’s most demanding high-speed corner, testing both aerodynamic grip and raw engine power. It was taken flat-out. And through high-speed corners, Mercedes-Benz could not shake Ferrari.

A trap!

Hamilton’s heart violently contracted, a sickening feeling gripping his throat. By the time he realized the true danger of the situation, the cold steel of Ferrari’s blade was already pressed firmly against his spine.

The air froze.

Brundle nearly screamed, jumping out of his chair.

Overt conspiracies. Covert plots. Strategy. Master planning.

And, of course, raw, psychological warfare.

A million details and disjointed images flashed rapidly through Brundle’s mind like a zoetrope spinning out of control. The truth, hidden behind layers of thick fog, finally revealed the tip of its iceberg. The sheer, staggering brilliance of Kai and Ferrari’s master plan was becoming blindingly obvious, yet it was still tangled with massive confusion and uncertainty, churning violently in his thoughts.

If ’virtue is one foot tall, but the devil is ten feet high,’ then in this specific scenario... who was virtue, and who was the devil?

Subconsciously, people always assumed that Ferrari, the orthodox, traditional king, represented ’virtue,’ while the slippery, Machiavellian Mercedes-Benz and the fiercely unorthodox Red Bull represented the ’devil.’

Therefore, on a purely strategic level, Ferrari had never been able to escape the suffocating shadow of Mercedes-Benz and Red Bull, repeatedly finding themselves outmaneuvered and forced into defensive, passive postures.

However, witnessing the scene unfolding right now, that assumption was entirely shattered.

Brundle slowly rose to his feet, his eyes glued unblinkingly to the live broadcast feed. From the initial brewing, to the meticulous layout, to the final, lethal strike... Kai’s offensive maneuver was a masterpiece of fluid execution—

Step One: Breach the DRS window and lock onto the slipstream.

Turn 10, the absolute fastest high-speed corner on the entire circuit. Kai fully, ruthlessly weaponized Ferrari’s overwhelming engine advantage. It was the singular, devastating weapon they possessed that could completely suppress both Mercedes-Benz and Red Bull. Based on everything they had seen throughout the entire weekend, Ferrari’s advantage on straights and high-speed corners was even more pronounced than last season. After seven agonizing laps of patient, meticulous setup, Kai finally ripped off his mask and bared his fangs. Before Hamilton could even process the threat, Kai took a vicious, massive bite.

Even a seasoned, elite veteran like Hamilton—whose immediate instinct was to aggressively accelerate, snap the slipstream tow, and shake the pursuit—couldn’t do it. Through Turn 10, Mercedes-Benz simply couldn’t outrun them.

On Lap 1 of the race, Hamilton had utilized the W10’s massive grip advantage to brutally overtake Kai around the outside of a corner.

Now, their positions were violently reversed.

Step Two: Pull out, overlap, run side-by-side.

Smooth as flowing water, without a single microsecond of hesitation or stutter. Kai sliced to the right. Facing the impending Turn 11 left-hander, he didn’t stupidly try to fight Hamilton for the inside apex. Instead, he brilliantly exploited the massive momentum generated by the slipstream and chose to launch a blistering assault around the absolute outside. The Number 22 and Number 44 cars entered Turn 11 practically bolted together, side-by-side.

Even though the Number 44 car still technically held a half-car-length advantage, Hamilton knew instantly: the momentum had irreversibly shifted.

Clearly, Kai was intimately aware of Mercedes-Benz’s massive advantage in mid-corner rhythm. Therefore, he deliberately abandoned the optimal racing line, choosing instead to prioritize sheer physical track position. Using the physical mass of his car to aggressively claim space, he blasted through the high-speed Turn 11 around the outside. As they approached the subsequent Turn 12 right-hander—also a high-speed sweeper—he had successfully converted his outside line into a crucial, inside-line advantage.

You can’t eat hot tofu if you’re too impatient. Facing down Hamilton, Kai had not only executed a brilliantly meticulous, airtight strategic layout, but he was executing it with terrifying, icy calm. Once he unsheathed his blade, his only objective was a lethal, one-hit kill. He refused to leave Hamilton a single millimeter of breathing room to mount a counter-attack.

Through two consecutive high-speed corners, the W10’s mid-corner rhythm and the SF90’s raw power were deadlocked in a brutal, equal standoff. The silver and red machines exited Turn 12 perfectly shoulder-to-shoulder, locked in a desperate wheel-to-wheel dogfight.

Step Three: DRS activated. Overtake. Block the line.

The Number 22 car now possessed both the track position and the optimal racing line. Facing the impending Turn 13 right-hander, he already controlled the crucial inside line heading toward the apex.

Extreme late braking! Hug the apex violently!

Even though Turn 13 was a sharp, 90-degree corner, Hamilton desperately tried to leverage his car’s superior mechanical grip. He attempted to maintain his rhythm around the outside line, staying glued to Kai’s sidepod. But Kai had been meticulously setting this exact trap since Turn 10. He had calculated the track, the cars, and his opponent with absolutely flawless, airtight precision. How could he possibly make a mistake now?

Simultaneously delaying his braking point to the absolute, terrifying limit, the exact millisecond his front tires crossed the apex, his steering input followed with violent precision.

Kai completely abandoned any attempt to compete with Hamilton on mid-corner rhythm. He radically altered his approach to navigating this low-speed corner. With a wide, aggressive, violently decisive maneuver, he cleanly sliced through the 90-degree turn!

Amidst the violent bouncing and chaotic turbulence, relying purely on the miraculous, instinctual synchronization of throttle and steering, he instantly corrected the car’s trajectory, rocketing dead straight toward the upcoming short straightaway.

In a single, breathless sequence, he violently shoved Hamilton into his rearview mirrors. And then, he instantly reverted to ”normal” operation. He morphed back into the textbook-perfect ’good boy,’ driving like a PSA ambassador for road safety. Utilizing a flawless, standard ”Out-In-Out” racing line, he stabilized the car and smoothly, effortlessly glided through the Turn 14 right-hander.

Hamilton watched it happen. ”...Sweet Jesus!”

The expletive nearly ripped itself out of his throat.

Because directly in front of him, the Number 22 car, having hugged the right side of the track through Turn 13, was now driving a dead-straight diagonal line entirely across the track to the far left side to set up for Turn 14. This specific racing line was completely legal, entirely legitimate, and violently bisected the track, instantly forcing the Number 44 car into an agonizingly awkward, impossible dilemma.

If Hamilton continued to hold the outside line, he would be forced to helplessly eat Kai’s turbulent wake.

If Hamilton took a massive gamble and dove for the inside line, Kai would immediately cut back to the inside to navigate Turn 14. If Hamilton was even slightly too aggressive, a catastrophic collision was virtually guaranteed.

From Hamilton’s perspective, Kai had aggressively changed his defensive line mid-corner—Illegal! But from Kai’s perspective, Hamilton had already lost the position and was attempting an incredibly dangerous, desperate re-overtake—Illegal!

Regardless of who was technically right or wrong according to the stewards, the brutal reality was undeniable: Hamilton had lost the position. If he forced the issue, he risked catastrophic front wing damage, which would completely destroy his entire race.

Fuck!

In that fleeting, lightning-fast microsecond, a stampede of ten thousand furious horses trampled through Hamilton’s mind. And clearly, they weren’t reciting positive affirmations.

Ultimately, Hamilton lifted off the throttle. He didn’t take the massive risk. He didn’t gamble. He maintained the outside line, shifting his entire focus onto securing a superior corner exit angle. He desperately needed to maximize his exit speed to ensure he didn’t lose any further track position to the cars behind him.

And thus—

Step Four: Corner exit. Take the lead. A lethal, one-hit kill. A strike directly to the throat!

”Kai! Hamilton!”

”Hamilton! Kai!”

”God— Oh my God— Kai... KAI! Ladies and gentlemen, Kai has arrived!”

The anticipation had climbed inch by agonizing inch, burning fiercely amidst the boiling blood and raw passion. Before anyone even realized it, their hearts were lodged firmly in their throats.

Brundle was completely unaware that he had slowly risen from his chair. His eyes were locked unblinkingly on the live broadcast monitor; his entire being felt like it was soaring through the clouds.

And then, it detonated. It exploded!

”Wheel-to-wheel! Shoulder-to-shoulder! The two World Champions engage in brutal, close-quarters combat right on the asphalt! Kai displays absolutely unbelievable courage and audacity, coupled with unparalleled, transcendental driving skill! He seizes absolute control of the initiative, offering Hamilton absolutely zero opportunity to counter-attack, and executes the overtake with flawless, ruthless precision!”

”WOW! Unbelievable! I honestly cannot remember the last time Lewis Hamilton was forced to surrender a position defensively without even a sliver of an opportunity to fight back. He looked completely, utterly powerless to defend or counter-attack.”

”It wasn’t that Hamilton drove poorly. It was that Kai drove with absolute, terrifying perfection. Meticulously laying the groundwork, constantly brewing the trap... Kai wove an inescapable net, completely enveloping Hamilton within it. He left Hamilton with absolutely zero space to mount a counter-offensive, executing the overtake cleanly and decisively.”

”Inconceivable! An absolute masterclass!”

The awe and astonishment erupted completely—

Brundle clutched his head, a profound, electrifying tingle shooting across his scalp. The roaring, surging emotions deep within his eyes silently painted the picture of his current mental state—it was overwhelming, like a collapsing mountain or a raging tsunami.

The more professional you were, the more profoundly you marveled at it. Because they intimately understood the sheer intellect and staggering technical skill required to execute that maneuver. It was infinitely more complex than a standard, everyday overtake.

Beside him, Croft watched his usually composed, analytical broadcast partner completely lose his mind. A massive smile broke across Croft’s face, and he seamlessly took over the commentary. As he shouted, the surging, boiling passion finally exploded outward. His entire body tingled; his blood was on fire.

”Ladies! And gentlemen!”

”Kai has successfully overtaken Lewis Hamilton and moved up into P3! Even though the undercut failed, Kai still successfully utilized pure, unadulterated on-track brilliance to execute the overtake!”

”It all feels so incredibly familiar. We lived through the 2018 season, witnessing scenes exactly like this time and time again. And now, in the 2019 season, we are treated to this spectacular, magnificent display once more!”

”BUT!”

”How on earth did this actually happen?!”

”After Mercedes-Benz established absolute, terrifying, tyrannical dominance over Free Practice and Qualifying, the impossible has happened again! God! What exactly are we witnessing right now?! What are we witnessing?!”

VROOM— VROOM-VROOM-VROOM—

The engines roared, the air vibrated violently. The acrid scent of vaporized racing fuel and melting rubber violently intertwined, crashing over the crowd in waves. The tremors rising from the asphalt shook every single cell and every drop of blood in their bodies. In a moment of pure delirium, it created the terrifying illusion that the entire world was physically shaking. Every single spectator in the venue was violently sucked into the hurricane.

Li Lingyu was naturally no exception. Her eyes were glued unblinkingly to the track. Her wildly hammering heart felt like it was actively trying to synchronize with the pulsing rhythm of the high-speed turbochargers.

And then—

The silver Number 77 car flashed past her field of vision.

The blue Number 33 car flashed past her field of vision.

Everything was exactly as expected. The two cars that still hadn’t pitted were massively far ahead, having completely dropped the rest of the pack. They were running a lonely race at the very front.

The crowd grew slightly quieter. The breeze carried the chaotic noise from further up the track—cheers, screams, gasps of awe—all tangled together with the roar of engines, surging closer and closer like an approaching tidal wave.

Involuntarily, Li Lingyu stood on her tiptoes, craning her neck as far as it would go, staring intently down the track. A moment later, she realized that every single person around her was doing the exact same thing. The collective image of thousands of people mimicking curious giraffes was incredibly comical. For a brief second, it was genuinely difficult to distinguish which side of the catch fencing was the actual zoo.

The thought lingered for a tiny, fleeting fraction of a second. The very next moment, Li Lingyu’s eyes went wide. Without any warning, she was violently yanked into the raging torrent approaching from ahead.

The roar of the crowd cascaded like a tidal wave, layer upon layer, rolling forward in perfect synchronization with the blinding speed of the approaching race cars—

Leading the charge was unmistakably a brilliant flash of Ferrari red.

The golden sunlight reflected off the streamlined chassis, shimmering brilliantly. The Number 22 logo struck like a bolt of lightning, violently cleaving through the chaos and carving a bloody path forward.

Trailing closely behind was that iconic, menacing silver.

Li Lingyu’s brain simply didn’t have the time to process what was happening. She reacted purely on primal instinct. The sound violently ripped through her throat and exploded outward, instantly becoming part of the deafening, rolling wall of noise. She stared unblinkingly as the red and silver afterimages tore past her with earth-shattering momentum.

Her head whipped from right to left.

Her rational mind still hadn’t fully recovered, yet Li Lingyu found herself seamlessly integrating into the massive, stadium-wide red ocean. In an instant, she unleashed an energy capable of toppling mountains and emptying seas.

Ah... AH! AHHHHHHHHH— AH...

Starting low, crescendoing to a deafening peak, then fading back down as the cars rocketed into the distance. The monstrous, towering wave of sound rolled magnificently along the Albert Park circuit, chasing the two streaks of light.

Wait, just now—

Kai... actually overtook him?

Consciousness finally, briefly returned to her brain. Li Lingyu’s eyes were wide as saucers, refusing to believe her own judgment. She instinctively turned her head and saw the exact same stunned, awe-struck expressions mirrored on her friends’ faces. No words were necessary. The Tifosi’s reaction erupted instantly, providing the definitive answer through their explosive, unhinged actions.

Logic shattered completely once again.

Kai did it. Kai actually did it again. Using an unbelievable, reality-breaking performance, he carved a bloody path through the thorns on the asphalt, forging endlessly forward, transforming the impossible into the possible.

A violent shiver surged up from the ground, drilling through the soles of her feet, racing through her bloodstream, electrifying her body. It shot through her heart, pierced her brain, and was finally released as a deafening scream.

”AHHHHHHH!”

It was fiercer, more ferocious, and infinitely more fanatical than before. Li Lingyu didn’t even know she was capable of producing a sound like that.

Now, Li Lingyu finally understood why people always said competitive sports had to be experienced live. Being there in person versus watching a broadcast were fundamentally, entirely different experiences.

Even though being at the track meant you lacked the comprehensive, multi-angle coverage of the broadcast cameras, and couldn’t see every corner of the race... the sheer atmosphere, the boiling adrenaline, the sensory overload of sight, sound, smell, and touch created memories that were profoundly, irreversibly different.

In this specific moment, Li Lingyu felt as though the golden, afternoon Melbourne sun was literally going to melt her into a puddle. But she didn’t care. She just kept screaming.

Screaming with absolute, uninhibited, reckless abandon.

The rolling heatwave crashed down with apocalyptic force, exactly like the relentless, world-ending tsunami in the movie 2012, baring its fangs and furiously chasing their every footstep.

Even encased within the deafening roar of the engine, Kai could clearly feel the immense power of that heatwave. He even found the time to crack a joke over the radio.

”Looks like the show has officially started.”

The casual, teasing remark brought a genuine smile to Borreipaire’s lips. ”Epic! Absolutely epic! Keep pushing, Kai. Toto Wolff is definitely watching you right now.”

Forget about Kai; even Binotto standing nearby couldn’t suppress his grin—

The overarching problem hadn’t been solved, and the race was far from over.

Mercedes-Benz remained terrifyingly dominant. Kai’s ability to overtake Hamilton was entirely reliant on flawless strategic layout, supreme technical skill, and sheer, unwavering courage.

But simultaneously!

Do not forget: Hamilton hadn’t pushed his car to the absolute, bleeding limit through Turn 13. He hadn’t attempted a desperate, do-or-die counter-attack on the spot. The fundamental reason for his restraint was that Mercedes-Benz hadn’t yet deciphered the true strategy Kai and Ferrari were running.

Hamilton was still strictly adhering to a one-stop strategy. He absolutely had to protect his tires. He couldn’t afford to incinerate his rubber over a momentary, emotionally driven dogfight, which would inevitably leave him completely defenseless in the critical closing stages of the race.

Given Wolff’s hallmark ’defensive offense’ methodology, until they fully understood Ferrari’s master plan, Mercedes-Benz absolutely refused to be led around by the nose. They refused to allow their opponents’ erratic strategies to plunge their own perfectly ordered plans into chaos.

Therefore, exactly as Borreipaire had said, Wolff was paying extremely close attention. His eyes were locked unblinkingly on Kai, desperately trying to unravel the true nature of Ferrari’s strategy.

And this time, Kai held absolutely nothing back. The moment he launched his attack on Hamilton, it meant Ferrari’s strategy was completely, entirely exposed to the world. It was only a matter of time before Mercedes-Benz and Wolff figured out exactly what was going on. Right now, he absolutely had to capitalize on this brief, fleeting window while his opponents were still confused. He had to hold absolutely nothing back, and give it everything he had—

Push.

While all of Albert Park was boiling over in ecstasy because Kai had overtaken Hamilton, the Mercedes-Benz pit wall didn’t have a single microsecond to spare for frustration or regret.

Their immediate, absolute top priority was confirming the tactical reality. Was Ferrari genuinely displaying the same unbelievable, long-run race pace advantage they had shown last season, allowing Kai to fully leverage his individual brilliance to overturn a massive car deficit? Or had Ferrari’s notoriously incompetent strategy group finally experienced a miraculous awakening, devising an incredibly complex, highly secretive master plan?

”Kai! Purple sector!”

Without a moment’s pause, the Mercedes-Benz pit wall instantly felt the suffocating pressure crashing down upon them.

Immediately, the pit wall issued a frantic command. ”Valtteri, it’s James. Push. Push immediately.”

Bottas was startled. ”What? What happened?”

However, Vowles didn’t have time to explain. ”Please push. Maximum push.”

Just moments ago, Hamilton had pitted significantly earlier than anticipated. Mercedes-Benz had immediately formulated a counter-strategy: they instructed Bottas to manage his pace, extending his stint on the track to delay his pit stop.

Ostensibly, this was to have Bottas cover off Verstappen, guarding against any aggressive Red Bull strategies, and doing everything possible to secure Bottas’s track position to ensure he didn’t fall victim to an undercut.

In reality, they were instructing Hamilton to gradually elevate his pace, attempting a stealthy overcut. When Bottas finally pitted, they would execute a quiet, seamless position swap.

Of course, covering Red Bull was genuinely part of the equation.

But then, Kai’s explosive emergence violently shattered those plans once again. Hamilton lost track position. The Mercedes-Benz strategy team had barely managed to untangle their thoughts, only for the chessboard to be violently kicked over and plunged back into absolute chaos.

Now, Mercedes-Benz realized the terrifying truth. Kai was launching a full-scale, maximum-attack pursuit. Having cleared Hamilton, he had a massive, unobstructed window of clean air to sprint flat-out. The window they had meticulously engineered for Hamilton to overcut Bottas... was rapidly transforming into a window for Kai to overcut Bottas.

The situation was critical!

Therefore, Mercedes-Benz’s immediate, instinctual reaction was to order Bottas into maximum attack mode. They needed to break the equilibrium and completely destroy Kai’s overcut attempt.

However, something was wrong. Something was very, very wrong. Wolff’s internal alarm bells began screaming at maximum volume—

Lap 22: Kai sets another purple sector!

But this time, Kai was truly showing his hand. This wasn’t the incremental, cautious pace elevation they had seen earlier. On this lap, he cranked the rhythm up to an entirely different, terrifying dimension.

While every other car on the grid was generally lapping in the mid-1:28s or low-1:29s, Kai became the very first driver in the entire race to smash through the 1:28 barrier.

On Lap 22, his single-lap pace was nearly 0.8 seconds faster than Bottas!
