Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 1572 -9 Volume 47: Massacre (Part 2)_4

They truly no longer have the courage to attack any mountain peak.

The low mountain line of Sunset Mountain has already become their nightmare. These mountains in the western part of the basin are even taller than Sunset Mountain, and the terrain is more treacherous.

Moreover, there is an advantage in taking this D88 numbered interstate highway, which is to meet the reinforcements led by Bellif as quickly as possible, forming a certain military thickness. If they can gather some troops and, before the pursuing enemies catch up, cooperate with the reinforcements to open a passage, there might still be a glimmer of hope!

A platoon of Suss Mecha opened the highway mode and thundered westward along the road.

Seven regiments, plus scattered troops that have gathered, amount to over ten thousand Combat Mecha, more than two thousand Transport Mecha, Command Mecha, electronic mecha, forming an overwhelming procession. However, this seemingly invincible steel torrent lacks any momentum. Despite the ground shaking and engines roaring which scare the beasts away and send birds flying, its weak and waning state is hard to conceal.

With two divisions at the back helping to fend off, the advance of the troops was relatively smooth. After all, it’s a central command group, having the right to let others cover their prioritized retreat, even if the two divisions ordered to intercept the pursuing forces were to surrender at first sight, they could ultimately buy some time. After leaving the town, the sounds of gunfire and cannonade behind gradually became distant, almost inaudible.

Langman sat on the top-grade rhino leather-covered command seat in the Command Mecha, his stiff body akin to a lifeless puppet.

The Langman Family is not considered a major noble family in Suss Empire, and their relationship with the Royal Family is limited to receiving the lowest class of invitation during hunts or balls, purely for bolstering the atmosphere and adding to the headcount. If not favored by Bellif, and following this renowned indomitable figure of Suss Empire rising steadily, the Langman family would still be unable to cultivate a heavy-handed Admiral in fifty years.

Langman has always been very satisfied. In terms of talent, he is considered slightly above average; in terms of battle achievements, he doesn’t stand out among peers, and even in striving for upward mobility which many small figures attempt to do diligently, he falls short. However, he has luck and insight!

In Suss Empire, many wish to challenge Marshal Bellif for the top seat in the Military Department, yet these individuals either continue to bide their time or have acted only to meet defeat.

Langman doesn’t desire to be the number one, nor even the second in the Military Department. He only wishes to stand quietly behind Bellif in an inconspicuous position. When Bellif rises steadily, he rides the crest; when Bellif meets defeat, he quietly distances himself. It’s very pragmatic, but for his family, it turns out to be the best choice.

He has always cautiously handled the discretion. Because he knows Bellif will eventually step down, and he requires a proper discretion for Bellif to regard him as an intimate during tenure, also a suitable discretion to ensure his name isn’t on the list of cleansing after Bellif’s era.

The offensive against Sunset Mountain was the first time he actively sought Bellif’s favor. Obtaining command of this battle from Bellif almost equated to having Bellif’s direct lineage label affixed to his forehead.

But he doesn’t care; previously he needed to manage discretion because he didn’t have enough opportunity to advance. While the merits of capturing Sunset Mountain are enough for him to remain unwavering regardless of the winds that blow after Bellif’s departure.

It was a battle plan he couldn’t believe would fail at any cost; therefore, he couldn’t comprehend how this battle was lost.

He has been sitting on the seat, dazed for a long time. It’s not that his psychological endurance is too weak, but rather he has one foot already stepping into the grave. 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

Bellif’s downfall is already an inevitable conclusion. Frenso, that small town by the Dorai River, has become the Waterloo for this Imperial Marshal. He probably still doesn’t know that even if he breaks through the passage, of the eighteen of Suss’s elite armored divisions and two Jiepeng Armored Divisions deployed at Sunset Mountain, fewer than three will make it back!

At the mere thought of the Royal Family’s anger, he feels a chilling sensation rising from within. For reasons unknown, on this journey, he also has a vague sense of an even more ominous premonition.

It seems now is not yet the worst outcome.

Even worse events are waiting for him up ahead.
