Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 180: Volume 3, Chapter 56, Raid Rules_3

The land-based air force launched their missions one after another, handling both air and ground tasks that filled their assignment schedule. They could only mechanically take off time and again, attack, be shot down, or return alive to prepare for the next mission.

The defensive line of the Gazalin Empire had already contracted by one-third. Out of more than 30 cities, ten had fallen into the hands of the Leray Federation, primarily distributed in the Western Hemisphere. The successful simultaneous landings by the Federation in both hemispheres had put the Gazalin Empire Army in a predicament of fighting on two fronts. However, given the relatively solid and complete defensive constructions, although the situation was tense, it was far from collapsing. Apart from unceasing resistance, most of the Imperial Army engaged in constant contraction and retreat. Many places were evacuated proactively.

In such a tug-of-war, contraction was merely a way to buy time. Sooner or later, these forces would be exhausted by the endless battles. However, judging from the morale of the lower-ranking officers, it seemed much higher than before. Liebgoet’s frequent telephonic meetings and document issuance provided the officers with guided insights into their objectives and the situation. Meanwhile, the influence of Russell and Gordon was gradually diminishing. Gazalin Empire soldiers were slowly embracing new tactical ideas and combat spirits.

For the motherland, for Gazalin’s honor! Lucerne would be the final point of the Leray Federation’s offensive. Here, they planned to drag the Federation into a prolonged war of attrition, using all the resources of this originally Federation-owned planet to deplete their strength and prepare for a major counteroffensive from the rear. This was the new concept that all officers and soldiers began to accept. Despite the Federation’s fierce offensive, all Gazalin soldiers did not feel a fatal threat, as if the battles were happening in distant skies. This situation also instilled great confidence in everyone. Liebgoet, after all, was a great general, and with him around, the Empire’s forces would not be wasted in vain.

Both sides sought each other’s weaknesses through various breakthroughs, airdrops, and flanks. While the Leray Federation’s offensive was indeed strong, the Gazalin Empire Army resembled an impenetrable octopus, contracting, spraying out thick ink, then expanding again, using its tentacles to counterattack. Their resilience was formidable.

The Mecha Research Lab of the Mythical Army was finally established, and Fatty became one of the first researchers. Five people from the Holy Knight Company passed the assessment and inspection to enter the lab, including Christina, Dell, and two Level 7 Mechanics from the Holy Knight Company. Level 7 Mechanics were already the highest caliber talent that private mecha companies could possess. Ordinary companies, without significant resources and talent cultivation mechanisms, found it difficult to have even one Level 7 Mechanic.

Although nominally under the Mythical Army, Tian Xingjian and his team’s workplace did not change; they remained at the Holy Knight Company. However, the technical department was requisitioned and turned into a branch of the Mecha lab, responsible for some non-critical designs. The small building where the technical department was located now had security levels established according to relevant ranks, with all security measures undertaken by the Mythical Army’s security forces. The Holy Knight Company was fully taken over by the Military Department, responsible for maintaining military mechas. The maintenance costs were settled by the Military Department, not unpaid labor, and working hours and other conditions remained the same, with relatively high freedom.

Christina felt somewhat disappointed. She hadn’t expected that after passing the mecha modification assessment, she still couldn’t enter the core lab established in the north Building 2 of the Mythical Army. Instead, she became the supervisor of a peripheral experimental point. She was unsure how significant this position would be when it came to future purges by the Military Department, feeling quite uneasy. Fortunately, on the day the lab was established, Reinhardt personally visited the Holy Knight Company, indicating their importance to this experimental point. This gave Christina some hope. At least, nominally, she had become the second female in the history of the Mythical Army, spanning hundreds of years.

Fatty was the most disappointed. This was vastly different from what he had envisioned. People in a peripheral lab had little contact with the high echelons of the Military Department and the Royal Family. The only way now was to produce notable work and once again garner attention, gaining a chance to mingle with the upper ranks. Russell’s instructions were clear; this was one of his tasks. Although Fatty was annoyed by such a task, Russell was adamant and refused to reveal the purpose behind making Fatty approach Reinhardt and the Royal Family, and getting involved in the inheritance battle among the three princes.

”If they expect me to have a chance to kill James, I’ll just leave!” Fatty thought, ”This isn’t a task for a human!”
