Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 154: Volume 3 Chapter 45: An Unsolvable Deadlock?

Since childhood, Tian Xingjian had been fascinated by mechanical things, whether it was Mechas or flying cars. This passion was the main reason why he switched from the reconnaissance training camp to the mechanical repair camp, more so than the fear of death. When he saw a uniquely customized Private Mecha, Fatty was absolutely captivated. Although he was very familiar with Military Mechas and had seen many classic blueprints of Private Mechas, he had limited hands-on experience. Despite its imperfections, the [Caelo] Beast-shaped Mecha had several modification ideas worth learning from.

Christina had been observing the mechanic who came to apply for the job for a long time. She carefully noted the places where his focused gaze lingered, and finally couldn’t help but smile. She turned her head and nodded at the HR manager.

When the manager walked over to Fatty, he was taken aback. This chubby fellow was peeking around the hind legs of the Beast-shaped Mecha, seemingly looking for something. Damn, what could be installed there, could it be...? The manager couldn’t help but cough to remind the unabashed chubby guy that someone was standing beside him.

Fatty was trying to figure out whether this Mecha had an energy shield probe installed. In his mind, if the energy shield probe was installed in that position, it would be quite a brilliant idea. It would effectively protect the vulnerable abdomen, and the probe hidden between the legs would be a blind spot during combat.

He just didn’t know if this Beast-shaped Mecha was male or female. If it were female, installing a row of probes on the abdomen would also be aesthetically pleasing, though perhaps a bit revealing.

Upon hearing the cough, Fatty turned his head and saw a middle-aged man standing beside him, looking somewhat awkward. Fatty glanced questioningly at the reception desk where Christina was, only to find that she was busy with something, with a faint smile on her face, without any intention of looking up.

Seeing Fatty sheepishly scratching his head, the manager finally broke the silence and extended his hand, ”Hello, I am Jose, the HR manager of the Repair Department. I heard you are applying for the Mechanic position, correct?” Fatty finally understood, quickly putting on a smile, and shook the man’s outstretched hand, ”Yes, yes, that’s me.”

Jose glanced at Christina and smiled, ”Please follow me, let’s go to the office to talk.” Fatty nodded and followed him into the hallway behind the lobby, took the elevator to the fifth floor, and entered a room with a sign for the Repair Department HR section.

After they were seated, Jose took Fatty’s paperwork and read it carefully. The old wall clock ticked quietly, making the office feel very peaceful, with only the occasional sound of Jose flipping through the papers. Through the office’s floor-to-ceiling windows, one could see the busy repair workshop behind. Sitting on the sofa, Fatty looked at the workshop, feeling a bit lost. How did a slacker like him end up joining the military and participating in wars, and now end up here under the identity of Zhang Yuan? Life is unpredictable; you never know where you’ll be thrown next.

Jose quickly finished reading the paperwork. He checked the ID on the computer and then handed the papers back to Tian Xingjian, smiling as he said, ”The documentation is very detailed, very impressive.” He got up, poured a cup of tea for Tian Xingjian, placed it on the coffee table, and casually remarked, ”I noticed earlier that you seemed particularly interested in that [Caelo]?”

Fatty shyly accepted the tea and smiled, ”The modifications on that Mecha are quite impressive, I really like it.” Jose was surprised, ”Oh? Among all those Mechas, [Caelo] isn’t the most outstanding. And this type of Mecha is already outdated. Your taste is quite unique, indeed.”

Fatty smiled sheepishly, ”From a performance perspective, it might not be the best, but in my opinion, the modification concepts of this Mecha are better than those of the others.”

Jose, sitting at his desk, asked with great interest, ”Really? Why do you think so?”

”If you’re going to test me, just say so, no need to beat around the bush. These corporate types are just idle,” Fatty thought to himself, feeling a bit annoyed. Nonetheless, he put on a simple smile and said, ”The choice of engine is very reasonable. Although it conflicts with the electronic balancing system, using a mechanical oscillating system can actually better exploit the running capabilities of this Beast-shaped Mecha.”

Jose clapped and laughed, ”Very succinct and insightful. It’s rare to see such a perceptive junior mechanic. Just based on these few words, you can skip the subsequent exams.” He took a contract from the drawer and handed it to Fatty, ”Although you don’t need to take the exam, there is still a probation period. Take a look at this contract, and if there are no issues, sign it, and we’ll be colleagues.”

Although Tian Xingjian knew it would be easy for him to get into this company given his skills, he didn’t expect it to happen so quickly and was a bit taken aback. Jose, seeing Fatty’s expression, thought, ”You naive chubby, if Miss Christina hadn’t taken a liking to you and I was trying to please her, you think getting into the company would be this simple?” He placed the contract in front of Fatty and smiled, ”Take your time to read through it, and sign it once you’re sure.”

Fatty picked up the contract and quickly skimmed through it. Finding no indentured servitude clauses, he signed Zhang Yuan’s name immediately. He thought, ”It’s actually unnecessary to check. Even if it’s indentured servitude, it’s Zhang Yuan who’s being sold, not me. It doesn’t really concern me.”

Jose took the signed contract, asked a few more casual questions, made a call to the administrative department, and enthusiastically arranged a dorm room for Fatty. He also explained some basic rules, mentioning that as long as his work met the standards, he could become a formal employee after a month of probation, with his salary and benefits increasing nearly tenfold.
