Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 157: Volume 3, Chapter 46: The Flaws of the Nation_2

Fatty laughed and said: ”As long as there’s payment, I don’t care who’s in charge.”

Ax shook his head and said: ”Honestly, I was supposed to enter the Mecha Manufacturing Company three months after coming here, but I’ve been here for almost a year now. Why?” Fatty chuckled mischievously and said: ”Not skilled enough, perhaps!”

Ax blushed and said: ”I can’t compare to you, but to get into the Mecha Manufacturing Company, my Level 4 mechanic skills are sufficient. To be frank, I find it comfortable here with the Holy Knights.” He lowered his voice and said: ”If the Military Department took over, would we still have such good times? They’d set quotas for tasks every day, and if we couldn’t meet them, we’d be accused of negligence. That’s no fun at all. Moreover, if we’re repairing high-security mechas, we’d probably be confined to prevent secret leaks.”

Fatty laughed: ”I reckon that even if we were taken over, we wouldn’t be the ones fixing those high-security mechas. Think about it, if the Empire took over, they’d target the mecha companies first, and we’d be the last resort. We’d probably just repair the standard mechas.”

As they spoke, the automatic food cart had moved in front of them, and they began serving themselves. Ax opened a bottle of beer and poured it for Tian Xingjian. As he turned his head, he saw Christina walking into the restaurant, rendered momentarily dumb, still pouring beer until it overflowed Fatty’s glass, spilling all over the table. Fatty jumped up, startled: ”It’s full, it’s full, stop, stop.” Ax finally snapped out of it, nervously putting down the beer bottle and tried to help Fatty clean up, but in his panic, knocked the beer bottle over again, and then another plate fell to the ground.

Fatty turned to look where Ax had been staring, saw the beautiful receptionist, and sighed: ”Beauty brings trouble...” He pointed at Ax and said: ”If you want to pursue her, just go for it, stop dithering around and wasting food.”

Ax looked embarrassed, ordered another dish, and laughed awkwardly: ”She’s the goddess in the hearts of every unmarried man in the whole company... Not just me, there’s nobody in all of Tanville qualified to chase her.”

Fatty looked back carefully, puzzled: ”I don’t see what’s so special. Even if she’s pretty, it’s not worth such a big reaction.”

Ax lowered his voice mysteriously and said: ”You don’t know, even Prince George is pursuing Christina. Someone saw him giving her flowers.”

Upon hearing this, Fatty was intrigued and asked sneakily: ”Really?”

Ax nodded seriously, and said secretly: ”The most baffling part is, Christina hasn’t shown any sign of accepting him. Do you think she really doesn’t want to be the future Empress?”

Fatty turned to look at Christina’s graceful smile, unsure: ”From receptionist to Imperial Empress, she probably doesn’t have much choice, right?” Upon hearing that the future Emperor was pursuing her, Fatty found her even more beautiful than before. Knowing she even ignored the future Emperor, he suddenly thought she looked like a fairy.

Then he laughed inwardly, men always have this mentality: someone else’s wife seems better, one’s own child is the cutest, always wanting to have another man’s wife give birth to their own child. That’s just how it is with women; as long as a big shot is pursuing her, even if she’s ugly, you can imagine a flower blooming on her.

Christina was originally very beautiful, though not surpassing Ann Lei, but still a top-tier beauty. Most importantly, she had an elegant demeanor, always serene and composed, with a gentle smile on her face, like a graceful orchid, standing tall and noble.

”How could a receptionist possibly know an Imperial Prince? Would the Imperial Family, focused on noble alliances, accept an ordinary girl as the future Empress? This woman, she’s probably not as simple as she looks on the surface.” Fatty pondered, looking at Christina.

The day’s work ended quickly, Fatty walked around the city, bought some daily supplies, and stood at the intersection of Road 871 on Highway 16. A Jaguar flying car stopped in front of him. Fatty didn’t hesitate, opened the door, and got in. Today was the official meeting day with the Freedom Front.

Driving the car was a middle-aged man Fatty didn’t recognize. Seeing him get in, the man smiled slightly and activated the flying car’s auto-navigation system. The two sat silently, not speaking until the flying car, after countless twists and turns, arrived at a warehouse next to a power plant. The middle-aged man then spoke gravely: ”Mr. Tian, please follow me.”

Tian Xingjian followed the middle-aged man into the warehouse. The warehouse was large and empty, littered with debris. One corner of the roof had collapsed for unknown reasons, allowing a view of the towering steel structures of the power plant. Passing through the warehouse, they entered a dilapidated door, walked through several alleys, and the man opened one of the numerous doors, leading Fatty inside.

The room was empty except for a cabinet. The man pressed a button on his remote, and the cabinet moved aside, revealing an elevator. They stepped into the elevator, and as the cabinet returned to its original position, the elevator descended for an unknown distance before stopping.

The elevator doors opened to reveal a vast underground military base before Tian Xingjian. There was no need to ask; this base was certainly below the power plant. The surface-level power plant’s radiation sources, thermal energy, electronic equipment, and personnel effectively masked everything in this military base.

According to Russell’s information, the Freedom Front owned four such bases in total, spread across three different cities, with one each in the east and west districts of Tanville. Observing the bustling activity in the base, even Tian Xingjian, aware of the base’s population and structure, was surprised. This was practically a small underground city.

Russell had poured a lot of effort into these bases. This was the core of the Freedom Front. The supply channels for the thousands of people in each base couldn’t have been perfected without painstaking management. The warriors here were different from the dispersed Freedom Front soldiers on other planets. They had completely given up their identities, committing themselves to this sunless base, waiting for the moment when brilliance and splendor would erupt.

Each person here had undergone rigorous scrutiny and was the most iron-blooded, loyal national warriors. In their families, these warriors were already considered dead. Russell had gathered these elite soldiers bit by bit from the army during various wars; they were the lifeblood and soul of the Freedom Front.

Using Russell’s words, they had been preparing for this for years, a lifetime dedicated to one thing: sacrificing in struggle. The awakening of a nation must go through such sacrifices.

Tian Xingjian quietly followed the middle-aged man through halls, corridors, and training fields of the military base, looking at unfriendly faces, seeing some warriors training. Russell’s words echoed in Fatty’s mind again.

”I’m entrusting them to you. Your task is to prevent these warriors from making meaningless sacrifices. They are the strongest warriors, but also the most pitiful people. Despite being part of this nation, I never deny our nation’s flaws. This nation has lost its dignity for too long; inferiority has seeped into my brothers’ and sisters’ bones. Even these warriors carry deep-seated inferiority, deeper than average people. Extreme inferiority leads to arrogance, a distorted sense of pride. Understand them, then lead them to victory and survival.”
