100 Chapter 100: The First Morning 2026-10-14

Sunlight spilled across the apartment.

Real sunlight.

Not the pale glow that accompanied memories.

Not the strange illumination of impossible places.

Not the cold white light of the room beyond reality.

Just sunlight.

Warm.

Ordinary.

Morning.

Kai stood motionless by the shattered window.

For a long time, he simply watched the city.

Cars rolled through intersections.

People crossed streets.

A dog chased a pigeon across the sidewalk.

Somewhere nearby, someone laughed.

The sound drifted upward through the morning air.

Life.

Normal life.

The kind he’d nearly forgotten existed.

The silver fountain pen rested comfortably in his hand.

It no longer felt heavy.

No longer felt dangerous.

No longer felt like the weight of countless stories.

It simply existed.

Like a pen.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Across the street, Luna was still standing where she’d been moments ago.

She smiled when she saw him.

A genuine smile.

The kind that reached her eyes.

For a brief moment, everything felt perfect.

Then her expression changed.

The smile vanished.

Her eyes widened.

Kai watched confusion flash across her face.

Then concern.

Then alarm.

Then outright panic.

Luna immediately reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.

A second later, Kai’s phone vibrated.

He glanced down.

Luna

Get downstairs.

Kai frowned.

Before he could respond, another message arrived.

Now.

His heartbeat quickened.

Then a third.

Don’t look behind you.

The warmth drained from his body.

Kai froze.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

Another vibration.

Kai.

I’m serious.

Don’t turn around.

For several seconds, he couldn’t hear anything except his own pulse.

Daniel was still asleep in his chair.

The grandfather clock continued ticking.

The apartment remained quiet.

Normal.

Yet Luna looked terrified.

Kai forced himself to keep staring through the window.

Luna hadn’t moved.

She wasn’t looking at him anymore.

She was looking beyond him.

Past him.

Into Apartment 7C.

Her face had become completely pale.

Slowly, she lifted a trembling finger.

Pointing.

Not at Kai.

At whatever stood behind him.

Kai closed his eyes.

Fear tried to return.

Old fear.

Familiar fear.

The fear that had followed him through every Chapter.

Every nightmare.

Every impossible truth.

But something felt different now.

He remembered Mrs. Ashcroft.

It remembers facts. It doesn’t understand people.

He remembered Elias.

Don’t save me first.

He remembered the Original Kai.

Choose your own ending.

And finally...

He remembered the unseen figure.

Now... live.

Kai exhaled.

Slowly.

Steadily.

His heartbeat calmed.

His shoulders relaxed.

Then he smiled.

His phone vibrated one last time.

Kai...?

Without turning around, he spoke.

”If you’re behind me...”

The apartment remained silent.

”...you can say hello yourself.”

Nothing happened.

For a moment, absolutely nothing happened.

Then—

A quiet chuckle echoed through the room.

Not sinister.

Not threatening.

Amused.

Almost relieved.

”So...”

The voice said.

”...you finally stopped running.”

Kai turned.

Standing in the middle of Apartment 7C was a young man.

Maybe twenty-five.

Black hair.

Gray hoodie.

Jeans.

Hands tucked casually into his pockets.

Kai recognized him immediately.

The man from across the street.

The one he’d seen watching him.

The one who had pointed toward his wrist.

Only now, he looked completely ordinary.

No impossible shadows.

No overwhelming presence.

No feeling of dread.

Just a guy.

Kai stared.

The stranger stared back.

Then smiled awkwardly.

”...Hi.”

Kai blinked.

”...Who are you?”

The stranger tilted his head.

”I’ve been called a lot of things.”

Kai immediately groaned.

The stranger paused.

”What?”

”No.”

Kai rubbed his forehead.

”Absolutely not.”

”What?”

”No cryptic answers.”

”No mysterious nonsense.”

”No riddles.”

”No destiny.”

”No hidden meanings.”

The stranger looked genuinely confused.

Kai pointed at him.

”I’m exhausted.”

For a second, neither spoke.

Then the stranger burst out laughing.

”Fair enough.”

He extended his hand.

”My name’s Noah.”

Kai looked at the hand suspiciously.

”...Just Noah?”

”For now.”

Kai sighed.

”That’s exactly the kind of answer I was talking about.”

”Sorry.”

Kai reluctantly shook his hand.

Warm.

Human.

Normal.

No visions.

No memories.

No hidden worlds.

Nothing.

Kai immediately narrowed his eyes.

”You’re really just a guy?”

Noah grinned.

”Mostly.”

”Mostly?”

”Mostly.”

Daniel suddenly stirred.

He blinked awake.

”...Kai?”

He yawned.

Then noticed Noah.

”Oh.”

A pause.

”You have company?”

Kai turned.

”You can see him?”

Daniel frowned.

”Why wouldn’t I?”

Kai stared.

Then slowly looked back at Noah.

Noah shrugged.

”Told you.”

Kai wasn’t sure whether to laugh or scream.

At that exact moment, Luna’s voice exploded from the phone.

”KAI!”

He pulled the phone away from his ear.

”I’m okay.”

”No!”

She sounded confused now.

Not frightened.

Confused.

”I...”

Across the street, Luna squinted.

”...who’s the guy standing next to you?”

Kai looked at Noah.

Then at Luna.

Then back at Noah.

The absurdity of the situation finally hit him.

After everything—

After loops.

After Authors.

After Witnesses.

After forgotten timelines.

After reality collapsing.

After meeting the thing behind the story itself—

He was standing in his apartment explaining a random man to his friends.

Kai laughed.

A real laugh.

The first one he’d had in a very long time.

Noah smiled.

”What?”

Kai shook his head.

”Nothing.”

He folded his arms.

”Actually, no.”

He pointed directly at Noah.

”Simple question.”

Noah nodded.

”Okay.”

”Simple answer.”

”Okay.”

”What do you want?”

The smile slowly faded from Noah’s face.

For the first time, he seemed completely serious.

He looked around Apartment 7C.

At the broken windows.

At the old photographs.

At the notebook.

At the dust that had once been the cassette player.

Then he looked back at Kai.

”I want to rent the apartment next door.”

Silence.

Kai stared.

”...What?”

Noah pointed toward the hallway.

”Apartment 7B.”

Another pause.

”The landlord finally called me back.”

Yet another pause.

”I wanted to see if it was still available.”

Daniel looked between them.

”...Seriously?”

Noah nodded.

”Seriously.”

Kai waited.

Nothing else came.

No dramatic reveal.

No hidden twist.

No impossible truth.

Just that.

A man looking for an apartment.

Kai stared for nearly half a minute.

Waiting.

Searching.

Expecting something.

Anything.

Nothing happened.

Finally, he laughed again.

Harder this time.

Noah laughed too.

Daniel joined them.

Across the street, Luna looked completely lost.

”What is happening?”

Kai shook his head.

”I have absolutely no idea.”

Then he grabbed his jacket.

”Come on.”

Noah blinked.

”Where?”

”I’ll introduce you to the landlord.”

Daniel immediately stood.

”And then coffee.”

Kai nodded.

”Definitely coffee.”

The three of them stepped into the hallway.

Ordinary footsteps echoed through the building.

Kai paused halfway down the corridor.

Something felt strange.

Not wrong.

Just different.

Then he realized why.

The pull was gone.

No whispers.

No black door.

No invisible force guiding him toward another mystery.

No feeling that another Chapter was waiting.

For the first time in years—

Nothing was calling him forward.

The future was empty.

Open.

Unknown.

And somehow...

That felt wonderful.

When they reached the stairwell, Kai glanced back one last time.

Apartment 7C stood open behind them.

Sunlight illuminated the photographs hanging on the wall.

His eyes settled on the final frame.

Elias.

Still smiling.

But something had changed.

The photograph looked different.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Before, Elias had seemed frozen in a farewell.

Now he seemed at peace.

His gaze was no longer directed toward the camera.

Instead, it seemed focused beyond it.

Toward the doorway.

Toward the hallway.

Toward the future.

Kai smiled.

Then turned away.

The stairs creaked beneath their feet.

Voices echoed.

Morning continued.

Life continued.

And for the first time since the story began—

The next Chapter wasn’t waiting to be written.

It was waiting to be lived.
