Kai held the envelope in both hands, afraid that if he gripped it too tightly, it would crumble into dust.

The paper was yellowed with age, its corners softened from years of sitting behind the bookshelf. A faint layer of dust coated the back, confirming what his instincts had already told him.

It hadn’t appeared overnight.

It had been hidden there for a long time.

Maybe two years.

Maybe longer.

And somehow, that realization unsettled him more than if it had appeared out of nowhere.

Because something appearing suddenly could be explained.

A trick.

A mistake.

A coincidence.

But something hidden?

Something carefully placed somewhere only he would think to look?

That meant someone had planned for this moment.

Someone had known that eventually, Kai Mercer would find it.

Daniel looked over his shoulder but didn’t crowd him.

”You recognize it?”

Kai slowly nodded.

”...That’s my handwriting.”

His own name stared back at him in thick black marker.

Kai Mercer.

Nothing else.

No date.

No return address.

No explanation.

Just his name.

His stomach twisted.

He stared at those two words longer than he should have, almost expecting them to change into something else.

They didn’t.

It was his handwriting.

His envelope.

His secret.

But he had no memory of making it.

His heart was beating so hard he could feel it in his fingertips.

”Luna.”

”I’m here.”

”I found something.”

”I know.”

Her voice was almost trembling.

Kai looked toward the monitor.

”You know?”

A brief silence followed.

Then she answered quietly.

”I’ve been hoping you would.”

Kai frowned.

”What do you mean?”

”I...”

She stopped herself.

For a moment, all he heard was her breathing.

”I don’t know.”

A shaky laugh escaped her.

”I just... I always had a feeling there was something you managed to hide.”

Kai looked down at the envelope again.

His own handwriting.

His own hiding place.

If Past Kai had gone through all the trouble of concealing this...

It had to matter.

Very carefully, he slid a finger beneath the seal.

The paper peeled apart with a dry crackle.

The sound felt strangely loud in the quiet apartment.

Like opening something that was never meant to be opened.

Inside...

There wasn’t just one page.

There were three.

A small silver key.

And an old Polaroid photograph.

For a few seconds, Kai didn’t move.

He just stared at the contents.

The key reflected the morning light coming through the window.

The photograph looked ancient, the edges worn and faded from years of being handled.

The photograph slipped out first.

Kai caught it before it hit the floor.

The image had faded around the edges, but the center remained clear enough to make out.

A rooftop.

Nighttime.

The city lights stretched endlessly behind two people sitting on the ledge.

One was unmistakably Kai.

He looked younger.

Healthier.

His hair was slightly longer, and there was an easy smile on his face that felt foreign compared to the exhausted expression he’d worn for months.

That was the part that bothered him most.

The smile.

It wasn’t the fake one he used for streams.

It wasn’t the forced grin he gave viewers when everything behind the scenes was falling apart.

It was real.

Comfortable.

Happy.

A version of himself he barely recognized.

Beside him sat a young woman wrapped in an oversized hoodie.

Her face...

Had been scratched away.

Kai froze.

Not faded.

Not damaged by time.

Scratched.

Someone had deliberately destroyed that part of the photograph.

The rest remained untouched.

The city.

The rooftop.

Kai.

Only her face was gone.

His thumb slowly traced the jagged marks over the missing image.

Whoever had scratched it out hadn’t been trying to ruin the picture.

They had been trying to erase a person.

The back of the Polaroid contained only four handwritten words.

We were happy here.

Kai felt his throat tighten.

”Luna...”

Silence.

Then—

”...The rooftop.”

Her voice was barely audible.

Kai looked at the headset.

”What?”

”I remember stars.”

He frowned.

”Luna?”

”I don’t remember your face.”

Her voice shook.

”I don’t remember mine.”

A small laugh escaped her, but there was no happiness behind it.

”But...”

She paused.

”I remember complaining it was cold.”

Kai stared at the photograph.

Then, without realizing it, he smiled.

”You hate the cold?”

”I always have.”

For some reason, that tiny detail hurt more than anything else.

Because it sounded normal.

Like something two people who had known each other forever would say.

He looked back at the picture.

Past Kai had been smiling.

Really smiling.

Daniel quietly spoke.

”Is that your girlfriend?”

Kai opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because he didn’t know.

The answer should have been simple.

Yes.

Or no.

But nothing about this was simple anymore.

Finally...

”I...”

He looked at the scratched-out figure.

”...I don’t know.”

The apartment remained silent.

Kai carefully placed the photograph on the coffee table and unfolded the first page.

The paper was filled with his own handwriting.

Messy.

Rushed.

Like he’d been writing against a deadline.

At the top of the page, one sentence had been underlined three separate times.

If you found this, it means I finally beat it.

Kai’s pulse quickened.

He continued reading.

I know you’re confused.

You’re probably exhausted.

You’ve probably already met Luna again.

If that’s true...

Then it worked.

His breathing caught.

Worked?

The letter continued.

I’m writing this before I forget.

Every day it takes something.

A face.

A conversation.

A year.

A promise.

Kai swallowed.

You don’t notice it happening because it never steals enough at once.

It just keeps trimming pieces away until your life feels smaller than you remember.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

A face.

A conversation.

A year.

A promise.

The words felt impossible.

Yet somehow...

They felt familiar.

Kai slowly lowered the page.

”...God.”

Nobody interrupted.

He kept reading.

I spent months trying to fight it.

I wrote journals.

It erased them.

I recorded videos.

It corrupted them.

I uploaded backups.

They disappeared.

So I stopped trying to remember everything.

Kai frowned.

Stopped?

He turned the page.

The handwriting became steadier.

Cleaner.

Like Past Kai had finally accepted something.

Memory isn’t what matters.

Choice does.

Every morning I wake up without pieces of my life.

Every morning...

I choose her again.

Kai felt his chest tighten.

The next lines nearly made him stop breathing.

That’s how I know what love is.

Not because I remember falling in love.

Because even after everything is taken...

I always find my way back to her.

The room disappeared.

Not literally.

Just...

For one impossible second, everything else faded.

The apartment.

The noise outside.

The world.

All of it disappeared beneath a wave of emotion so overwhelming that Kai forgot to breathe.

His eyes burned.

He didn’t understand why.

He didn’t remember loving Luna.

He didn’t remember meeting her.

He didn’t remember the rooftop.

Yet reading those words didn’t feel like discovering someone else’s letter.

It felt like remembering a promise he had made in another life.

A tiny sound came through the headset.

Luna had started crying again.

Not loudly.

Just quietly enough that she probably hoped nobody would notice.

Kai closed his eyes.

”Luna.”

She answered almost immediately.

”...Yeah?”

Without thinking.

Without planning.

Without understanding why.

Kai smiled.

”I think...”

He laughed softly through the lump in his throat.

”...I really missed you.”

The call went completely silent.

Daniel looked away, suddenly feeling like he was intruding on something deeply personal.

For nearly a minute, nobody spoke.

Then Luna whispered six words that broke whatever composure she still had.

”...I missed you every single day.”

Kai looked back down at the letter.

There was still one page left unread.

Beside it, the small silver key gleamed in the morning light.

Tied to it with faded blue string was a tiny paper tag.

On it, in Kai’s own handwriting, were three words.

For Apartment 7C.
