Chapter 93: The Day Before Chapter One

Nobody reached for the note.

It rested silently atop the coffee table beside the shattered cassette player, its brittle edges slowly curling inward as though decades had passed in the span of a heartbeat.

Kai couldn’t take his eyes off the six words.

Loop Zero has finally begun.

He read them again.

And again.

His heartbeat slowed—not because he had calmed down, but because something inside him had gone unnaturally still.

Every witness.

Every sacrifice.

Every loop.

Every impossible choice...

All of it had been leading here.

Loop Zero.

For the first time since this nightmare had begun, Kai wasn’t sure whether he had reached the end...

Or the true beginning.

Daniel was the first to break the silence.

”...What does that mean?”

Kai kept staring at the note.

His voice came out almost absent-minded.

”I don’t think...”

He swallowed.

”...I don’t think we’re in another loop anymore.”

Static crackled through his headset.

Then Luna spoke quietly.

”Then what are we in?”

Kai didn’t answer.

Because deep down...

He already knew.

Or at least...

He was terrified that he did.

The cassette player gave one final mechanical click.

Its ruined speaker crackled weakly, as though forcing out the last remnants of its voice.

”The story always starts...”

A burst of static interrupted it.

”...the day before you think it does.”

Silence followed.

The tape finally snapped.

The reels stopped spinning.

Whatever had been speaking to them...

Was gone.

Forever.

Nothing else had changed.

Mrs. Ashcroft’s grocery bag was still missing.

The Polaroids had vanished.

The walls remained covered in photographs.

The grandfather clock continued to stand proudly in the corner, its pendulum swinging with slow, unwavering rhythm.

Tick.

Tock.

Tick.

Tock.

Its hands remained fixed at exactly...

8:00.

Kai’s gaze drifted across the room.

Then he froze.

”Elias...”

Daniel looked up.

”What about him?”

Kai pointed toward the nearest photograph.

The smiling teenager inside the frame was...

Fading.

Not disappearing.

Not being erased.

Simply becoming... transparent.

Every few seconds, his outline grew fainter, as though the photograph itself was slowly forgetting who had once stood there.

Kai’s chest tightened.

”No...”

He crossed the room in two hurried steps and grabbed the frame.

The moment his fingertips touched the glass...

Warmth spread through his hand.

A familiar voice echoed softly inside his mind.

Don’t waste time trying to save ghosts.

Kai jerked his hand back.

The fading stopped.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then it resumed.

Even slower than before.

Luna’s frightened whisper reached him through the headset.

”Kai...”

”I know.”

”He...”

”I know.”

His voice barely held together.

He stood there helplessly, watching the image continue to fade.

For everything Elias had endured...

For every loop.

Every sacrifice.

Every impossible decision.

He still wasn’t allowed to stay.

Not because the Author was erasing him.

Because...

His role was finished.

Mrs. Ashcroft’s words surfaced in Kai’s memory.

”You only get one chance.”

He finally understood.

This wasn’t the ending.

It was a handoff.

Elias hadn’t survived long enough to be remembered.

He had survived long enough to pass the story on.

A loud bang echoed from somewhere below.

Not supernatural.

Just...

A front door slamming.

Someone shouting on the street.

A dog barking.

The rumble of a passing truck.

Normal sounds.

Real sounds.

Daniel frowned.

”...People.”

Kai slowly walked toward the shattered window.

Outside...

Life continued exactly as it always had.

A mail carrier stuffed envelopes into rusted mailboxes.

Two children chased each other across the sidewalk, laughing so loudly their parents shouted after them.

A couple argued over a parking space.

Someone carried groceries into the neighboring building.

Nobody looked afraid.

Nobody stared toward Apartment 7C.

Nobody had any idea that reality itself had nearly collapsed.

Then Kai noticed him.

Across the street.

A man stood perfectly still.

Gray hoodie.

Hands buried inside his pockets.

Watching the apartment.

Too far away to distinguish his face.

Yet Kai didn’t need to.

He knew.

Not guessed.

Knew.

”He can see me.”

Daniel stepped beside him.

”What?”

”There.”

Kai pointed.

”The man.”

Daniel squinted for several seconds.

”...Kai.”

”What?”

”...There’s nobody there.”

Kai looked again.

The stranger remained exactly where he’d been.

Then, almost lazily...

The man lifted one hand.

Tapped the inside of his wrist.

As though pointing toward a watch.

Kai instinctively lowered his gaze.

The silver ring.

The engraving had changed again.

The words—

Find the last witness

—had vanished.

In their place...

Only four characters remained.

09:00

His breath caught.

The grandfather clock.

Eight o’clock.

The ring.

Nine.

One hour.

One final countdown.

Kai looked back outside.

The man in the gray hoodie...

Was gone.

No footsteps.

No turning away.

Simply...

Gone.

”Kai.”

Luna’s voice sounded different.

Quieter.

More serious than he’d ever heard it.

”I just remembered something.”

His stomach tightened.

”What?”

”I...”

She hesitated.

”...I don’t think Chapter One was actually the beginning.”

Kai let out a hollow laugh.

”I don’t think so either.”

”No.”

Her voice sharpened.

”I mean...”

Another burst of static interrupted her.

When it cleared, she sounded shaken.

”I remember meeting you...”

A pause.

”...before we ever met.”

Kai’s blood turned cold.

”What?”

”I don’t know how to explain it.”

”It feels like...”

She struggled for words.

”...someone introduced us.”

The notebook in Kai’s hand suddenly became warm.

He looked down.

The pages were no longer blank.

Black ink slowly bled across the paper.

Not appearing instantly.

Writing itself.

Stroke by stroke.

As though an invisible hand held an invisible pen.

The first line formed.

Chapter Zero

Kai stared.

Another sentence appeared beneath it.

The day the Author found Kai Mercer.

His breathing stopped.

The notebook wasn’t recording history.

It wasn’t preserving memories.

It was...

Writing.

Beginning a new story.

Three ordinary knocks echoed through Apartment 7A.

Not the measured rhythm of the creature.

Not the impossible tapping from inside the cassette player.

Just...

A visitor.

Daniel frowned.

”Were you expecting someone?”

Kai slowly shook his head.

”No.”

The knocking came again.

This time accompanied by a young man’s cheerful voice.

”Package delivery!”

Daniel visibly relaxed.

”Oh.”

He started toward the front door.

”I’ll get it.”

Kai didn’t move.

Something felt wrong.

Not obviously supernatural.

Something subtler.

The voice.

It sounded...

Too practiced.

Too perfectly friendly.

Daniel unlocked the door and pulled it open.

A young delivery driver stood outside wearing a clean navy-blue uniform.

A medium-sized cardboard box rested comfortably in his arms.

He smiled politely.

”Delivery for...”

He looked down at the shipping label.

Then back up.

His smile vanished.

”...Kai Mercer.”

Kai stepped closer.

”I didn’t order anything.”

The delivery driver frowned.

”That’s strange.”

He turned the box over, reading the label again.

”It says...”

Confusion spread across his face.

”...deliver before the first Chapter.”

Silence swallowed the hallway.

The driver’s expression emptied.

His pupils slowly dilated until almost nothing remained but black.

Without another word...

He held the package out toward Kai.

Kai accepted it automatically.

The driver turned around.

Walked calmly down the hallway.

Reached the corner.

And disappeared from sight.

Not hurriedly.

Not unnaturally.

Just...

Like an ordinary employee finishing another ordinary delivery.

Kai lowered his gaze toward the package.

No company logo.

No shipping label.

No return address.

Only a single handwritten message across the top.

For the boy who thinks he’s the main character.

Daniel swallowed.

”...Are you going to open it?”

Kai didn’t answer.

He simply stared at the box.

Seconds passed.

Then he noticed something that made every hair on his body stand on end.

The cardboard flaps weren’t sealed.

There was no tape.

No glue.

No signs that anyone had opened it from the outside.

Because it hadn’t.

The box...

Had already been opened.

From the inside.
