The house disappeared.

Kai fell.

There was no floor beneath him.

No ceiling above him.

Only endless darkness filled with countless fragments of light drifting around him like shattered stained glass.

Each fragment held a memory.

A birthday.

A funeral.

A wedding.

A child’s first steps.

Someone’s final breath.

Millions of lives.

Millions of moments.

All suspended inside an impossible sea of silence.

Kai reached toward one without thinking.

The instant his fingers brushed its surface—

A little girl laughed as she chased butterflies through a field.

The memory wasn’t his.

He felt the warmth of sunlight against bare skin.

The soft grass beneath small feet.

The certainty that tomorrow would always come.

Then it vanished.

The fragment drifted away.

Another floated close.

An old man sat beside a hospital bed, gently holding his wife’s frail hand.

”I’ll see you again.”

His voice trembled.

She smiled.

”You’d better.”

Darkness swallowed them both.

Kai stared after the fading light.

”...Whose are these?”

Mrs. Ashcroft answered from somewhere nearby.

”Everyone’s.”

Kai turned.

She stood only a few steps away, despite there being nothing beneath her feet.

Daniel floated nearby as well, still clutching an invisible handrail from the elevator that no longer existed.

He looked completely lost.

The elevator itself had vanished.

Only the four of them remained suspended inside the endless void.

Mrs. Ashcroft looked around with quiet sadness.

”This is where forgotten memories come.”

Kai watched another fragment drift by.

A boy proudly showed his mother a crayon drawing.

She kissed his forehead.

His grin stretched from ear to ear.

Then the memory faded into darkness.

”They aren’t destroyed.”

Mrs. Ashcroft’s voice remained soft.

”They’re abandoned.”

Kai slowly looked around.

There were more fragments than stars.

Some glowed brightly.

Others barely flickered.

A few had gone completely dark.

”So...”

He whispered.

”...it’s been stealing memories for...”

”Centuries.”

She finished for him.

”Perhaps longer.”

A distant sound echoed through the void.

Not footsteps.

A heartbeat.

Slow.

Patient.

Ancient.

Kai instinctively looked toward it.

Far away...

Something enormous moved between the floating memories.

He couldn’t make out its shape.

Only its size.

It drifted through the endless sea without disturbing a single fragment.

Like an ocean current beneath leaves floating on still water.

Daniel saw it too.

”...Is that...”

Mrs. Ashcroft slowly shook her head.

”No.”

”What?”

”That’s only its shadow.”

Silence settled over them.

The implication was almost impossible to comprehend.

Kai remembered Elias’s last words.

Find the First Witness.

He looked back at Mrs. Ashcroft.

”You know where they are.”

She smiled sadly.

”I know where they were.”

”Is there a difference?”

”There always is.”

She reached into her grocery bag again.

Kai almost laughed.

The bag seemed to hold an impossible number of things.

This time...

She removed an old brass compass.

Its glass face was cracked.

Instead of pointing north...

The needle spun wildly.

Round and round.

Never settling.

She placed it carefully into Kai’s hand.

”It won’t point toward places.”

Kai looked down.

”What does it point toward?”

”Truth.”

The instant the compass touched his skin...

The needle stopped spinning.

Slowly...

Deliberately...

It turned.

Not toward the enormous shadow.

Not toward the drifting memories.

Toward...

A single fragment.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

Unlike every other memory...

This one wasn’t glowing.

It was dark.

As though someone had extinguished its light centuries ago.

Kai frowned.

”That’s it?”

Mrs. Ashcroft nodded.

”The oldest forgotten memory.”

Kai reached toward it.

The moment his fingertips brushed the fragment...

The void shattered.

Wind brushed across his face.

He stood in the middle of an endless field.

No buildings.

No roads.

No city.

Only tall grass rolling beneath a gray sky.

Rain lingered in the air but never fell.

Far ahead...

A lone oak tree stood atop a gentle hill.

Beneath it sat a little boy.

He couldn’t have been older than ten.

Suspenders.

Scuffed leather shoes.

A flat cap rested beside him in the grass.

He quietly sketched inside a worn notebook.

Kai approached slowly.

The boy looked up.

His eyes stopped Kai in his tracks.

Not because he recognized the child.

Because those eyes carried the same impossible exhaustion he’d seen in the older Kai.

The same quiet loneliness.

The same determination.

The boy smiled politely.

”Hello.”

Kai stopped a few feet away.

”...Hi.”

The child closed his notebook.

”I was wondering when someone would finally find me.”

Kai’s pulse quickened.

”Are you...”

”The First Witness?”

The boy nodded.

”I suppose I am.”

”You don’t seem surprised.”

”I’ve had a very long time to think.”

Kai glanced around the empty field.

”Where are we?”

”My first memory.”

The boy answered simply.

”It hasn’t ended yet.”

Kai frowned.

”What do you mean?”

The child looked toward the distant horizon.

”As long as someone remembers it...”

”...time never leaves.”

The answer somehow felt both impossible and perfectly logical.

Kai lowered himself into the grass opposite the boy.

For a while...

Neither of them spoke.

Only the wind whispered between them.

Finally...

The child asked quietly,

”Do you know my name?”

Kai shook his head.

”No.”

The boy smiled.

”Good.”

Kai frowned.

”...Good?”

”If you remembered it...”

He looked up at the gray sky.

”...it would’ve meant we failed again.”

Again.

Everything always returned to that word.

Again.

The little boy reopened his notebook.

Instead of drawings...

Every page contained names.

Thousands of them.

Each one carefully crossed out.

Kai’s stomach tightened.

”I’ve seen a notebook like that.”

”I know.”

The boy smiled sadly.

”I started it.”

Kai looked up.

”Elias...”

”...copied mine.”

Silence stretched between them.

The child slowly turned to the final page.

Only one name remained.

Unlike the others...

It wasn’t crossed out.

He rotated the notebook so Kai could read it.

Two words.

Written in careful handwriting.

The Author

Kai stared.

”The...”

He looked up.

”...Author?”

The little boy nodded.

”The one who wrote the first story.”

”The one who made the first bargain.”

”The one...”

His expression became solemn.

”...who became the first monster.”

The wind stopped.

Every blade of grass froze.

The gray clouds above became perfectly still.

The little boy closed the notebook.

Then he looked directly into Kai’s eyes.

”Tell me something.”

Kai nodded slowly.

”...Okay.”

The child tilted his head.

”When you stream...”

”...what do people call themselves?”

Kai blinked.

”My...”

He frowned.

”...my viewers.”

”And what do they do?”

”They watch.”

”They laugh.”

”They comment.”

”They react.”

The boy nodded.

”They witness.”

Kai’s breathing slowed.

”You think this is about streaming?”

The child smiled faintly.

”No.”

”I think streaming is only the newest name for something much older.”

He pointed toward the empty horizon.

”Every civilization tells stories.”

”Every story needs someone to witness it.”

”And every witness gives that story power.”

Kai felt something cold settle in his chest.

”The creature...”

The boy finished the thought for him.

”...was born from a story that no one was willing to let end.”

Silence.

”That’s why it collects memories.”

”It isn’t feeding.”

”It’s preserving.”

Kai frowned.

”But it’s hurting people.”

”Yes.”

The boy’s smile disappeared.

”Because it forgot the difference between remembering...”

”...and refusing to let go.”

He stood for the first time.

Though he was only a child...

The movement carried impossible age.

”You’ve been asking the wrong question.”

”It was never...”

”What is the monster?”

He met Kai’s gaze one last time.

”The real question is...”

”...who kept writing after the story should have ended?”

The first drop of rain finally fell.

It landed on the notebook.

Across the page...

The words The Author slowly began to bleed, the ink spreading until they were no longer words at all.

They became...

A name.

Kai’s eyes widened.

He leaned forward instinctively.

Just before he could read it...

The notebook slammed shut by itself.

The little boy sighed.

”...Not yet.”

Then, somewhere beyond the field...

A page turned.
