Yandere Stream

Kai’s first instinct was to look up.

The apartment ceiling stared back at him.

White.

Cracked near one corner.

A yellowed smoke detector hung crookedly above the living room, surrounded by water stains that looked almost like branching veins. Nothing moved. Nothing crawled. There wasn’t a camera tucked into the corners, no hidden lens glinting beneath the light fixture.

Nothing.

Yet the laptop continued displaying a live feed from somewhere above him.

The camera drifted forward with slow, deliberate movements.

It wasn’t gliding.

It wasn’t floating.

It lurched.

Tiny adjustments.

Tiny pauses.

Like something with too many joints was carefully crawling across the ceiling, stopping every few feet to readjust its grip before continuing.

Kai felt his pulse hammer in his ears.

”Luna.”

”I’m here.”

”...It’s moving.”

”I know.”

”You can see it?”

”I can see the recording.”

She inhaled quietly.

”But I can’t see what’s holding the camera.”

Kai looked up again.

Nothing.

His eyes dropped back to the laptop.

The feed had reached the center of the apartment.

Its angle lowered almost imperceptibly.

Now it was looking directly at him.

Not generally.

Not approximately.

At him.

The sensation washed over him in a wave so intense he nearly looked away.

It wasn’t the feeling of being watched.

It was the feeling that something had been watching him for weeks... months... maybe longer.

Patiently.

Quietly.

Learning.

”Kai.”

Derek’s voice cut through the silence.

”Yeah?”

”Walk.”

”What?”

”Just move.”

Kai frowned.

”...That’s your plan?”

”I want to test something.”

Kai took a cautious step to the left.

On the laptop...

The camera hesitated.

Then adjusted.

Following him.

He took another step.

Again, it followed.

Not predicting.

Tracking.

Every shift of his weight.

Every slight movement.

Real time.

His stomach twisted.

”It’s live.”

”It has to be.”

Derek didn’t answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice had become much quieter.

”...I think you’re right.”

Daniel came over the speakerphone.

”Mr. Mercer?”

”Yeah?”

”If you’re uncomfortable being alone, I can have one of the officers come inside.”

Kai opened his mouth.

Then closed it again.

The reflectionless officer.

The smiling man.

The hallway.

The peephole.

Every encounter replayed itself inside his head.

Everything had wanted permission.

Everything had wanted him to invite it closer.

”...No.”

Daniel didn’t hesitate.

”Alright.”

”We’ll stay out here.”

”If you need us, we’re not going anywhere.”

Kai let out a breath.

”Thanks.”

The simple acceptance grounded him more than any reassurance could have.

Nobody argued.

Nobody insisted.

Nobody told him he was imagining things.

After everything that had happened tonight, even being trusted felt unfamiliar.

The laptop chimed.

A notification appeared over the live feed.

Motion Detected

Kai stared.

”...Seriously?”

The notification vanished before anyone could comment.

The camera continued creeping forward.

Closer.

Closer.

The image became increasingly unstable.

Not blurry.

Too close.

As though whatever carried the camera had lowered itself until the lens hovered only inches above his head.

Every hair on the back of Kai’s neck stood up.

His instincts screamed.

Move.

Now.

He threw himself sideways.

His shoulder slammed into the couch hard enough to send a cushion tumbling onto the floor.

The laptop erupted in sharp bursts of static.

The live feed jerked violently.

For less than a second—

Something crossed in front of the camera.

Not clearly.

Not long enough for his eyes to understand.

Just pale shapes.

Too many of them.

Long.

Jointed.

Folding over one another with impossible flexibility before vanishing beyond the edge of the frame.

Then the picture stabilized.

The camera was aimed at the exact place where Kai had been standing moments earlier.

Silence settled over the apartment.

Kai remained crouched beside the couch, breathing hard.

”...That felt personal.”

Luna let out a shaky laugh.

”I was literally about to say that.”

Kai pushed himself upright, rubbing his bruised shoulder.

”Fantastic.”

”My coping mechanism is making jokes while invisible ceiling monsters try to stalk me.”

”You’ve had worse.”

”I have?”

”You once spent almost three hundred dollars on mechanical keyboards because you lost a ranked match.”

Kai blinked.

”...Did I tell you that?”

”You ranted for twenty-three minutes.”

”I timed it.”

Despite everything...

Kai laughed.

Not the nervous laugh he’d forced all night.

A real one.

Brief.

Exhausted.

Human.

For just a moment, the apartment didn’t feel quite so oppressive.

The silence afterward wasn’t empty.

Luna was still there.

Derek was still listening.

Daniel was still outside.

He wasn’t completely alone.

The realization mattered more than he wanted to admit.

His eyes drifted back toward the laptop.

The live feed had frozen.

A loading circle spun lazily in the center of the display.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Then the camera angle changed.

Not the living room.

His bedroom.

The hidden wall.

The peeling wallpaper.

The faded handwriting beneath layers of chipped paint.

The camera approached slowly until the words filled the screen.

Messages he’d already uncovered.

Warnings he’d already memorized.

Then it continued moving.

Farther along the wall.

Toward a section he had never peeled open.

The wallpaper there remained intact.

On the laptop, however, it had already been removed.

The handwriting underneath looked rushed.

Uneven.

As though whoever wrote it had been running out of time.

Kai leaned closer.

The words sharpened.

Rule Two: It cannot imitate someone who is genuinely loved.

Nobody spoke.

Kai read the sentence again.

Then a third time.

His heartbeat stumbled.

”...What?”

Luna whispered before anyone else could.

”...No.”

Her voice trembled.

Not with fear.

With something else.

Hope.

Tiny.

Fragile.

Almost unbelievable.

Kai couldn’t take his eyes off the screen.

”What does that mean?”

”I...”

She stopped.

”I don’t know.”

But he could hear her thinking.

Fast.

Very fast.

Kai looked back at the words.

His mind raced through every encounter.

The smiling man.

The anonymous messages.

The impossible phone calls.

His own voice speaking from the stream.

Luna’s copied voice.

The reflectionless officer.

Every imitation.

Every borrowed face.

Every lie.

Then...

He froze.

”Luna.”

”...Yeah?”

”It copied me.”

”Yes.”

”It copied your voice.”

”...Yes.”

”It copied messages from Milo.”

”Yes.”

”It copied stream alerts.”

”Yes.”

Kai looked toward the front door.

”...It never copied Daniel.”

Silence.

Then Luna answered quietly.

”No.”

Kai frowned.

”Not once.”

”It spoke as him.”

”It answered like him.”

”But it never pretended to be him.”

His thoughts accelerated.

She was right.

Every imitation had been someone emotionally connected to Kai.

Someone whose voice he would instinctively trust.

Daniel had remained... Daniel.

Never replaced.

Never worn like a mask.

”...Why?”

Nobody answered.

The laptop did.

Beneath Rule Two, new words appeared.

Not all at once.

One letter at a time.

As though something invisible were typing.

Because no one was waiting for Daniel to come home.

Kai felt his stomach drop.

The apartment fell silent.

Then, before anyone could process the sentence, another line appeared.

Love is remembered.

Loneliness is easier to rewrite.

The webcam light flickered.

The screen darkened.

One final sentence slowly faded into view.

Rule Two learned.

The laptop shut itself with a loud, deliberate click.

At that exact moment—

Someone knocked gently on Kai’s apartment door.

Three soft knocks.

Not urgent.

Not threatening.

Just enough to be heard.

Daniel’s voice never followed.

Neither did the officers’.

Only silence waited on the other side.
