100 Chapter 100: The First Morning 2026-10-14

Kai couldn’t hear anything.

Not the groaning building.

Not Daniel shouting his name.

Not even his own breathing.

The memory had torn through him like lightning, leaving behind fragments that refused to disappear this time.

Rain.

The rooftop.

The black door.

Luna crying.

His own voice.

”Then take my name instead of hers.”

His stomach twisted violently.

”No...”

The word escaped as little more than a breath.

The older Kai was already beside him, gripping both of his shoulders tightly enough to keep him grounded.

”Stay with me.”

Kai barely heard him.

His head throbbed with memories that no longer felt like broken pieces. They fit together now, each one locking into place until there were no gaps left to hide inside.

”I remember...”

His hands shook uncontrollably.

”I made the deal.”

The older Kai closed his eyes.

”...Yes.”

Kai stared at him in disbelief.

”You lied.”

”I did.”

Pain flashed across Kai’s face before anger swallowed it whole.

”You let me believe Luna sacrificed herself.”

”I needed you to.”

Kai shoved him backward with all the strength he had left.

”You let me hate myself!”

The older Kai stumbled but didn’t resist.

”I know.”

”You let her carry that guilt!”

”I know.”

”You—”

The words died in Kai’s throat.

The older Kai wasn’t arguing.

He wasn’t defending himself.

He wasn’t even trying to explain.

He simply accepted every accusation.

That somehow hurt more than any excuse could have.

”You had every right to hate me.”

He slowly stood, brushing shattered glass from his sleeve.

”But if I’d told you the truth...”

He met Kai’s eyes.

”...you would’ve made the same choice again.”

Kai wanted to deny it.

He wanted to scream that he wouldn’t.

That there had to be another way.

But the answer was already sitting in his chest.

He would.

Without hesitation.

If it meant Luna lived...

He would make the deal again.

The realization hollowed him out.

”You idiot...”

Luna’s voice trembled through the speakers.

Not angry.

Heartbroken.

”You absolute idiot...”

Kai slowly turned toward the monitor.

She was crying openly now, her shoulders shaking as she struggled to breathe.

”You promised me.”

”I...”

”You promised...”

Her voice cracked.

”...that we’d always make decisions together.”

Another memory surfaced.

Not a fragment.

A real memory.

Rain hammered the rooftop.

Luna stood in front of him, soaked from head to toe, her hair plastered against her face. Despite everything, she held out her little finger with complete seriousness.

”If one of us ever does something stupid without telling the other...”

She sniffled.

”...I’m haunting you.”

Kai had laughed.

”I’ll be dead.”

”You’ll still deserve it.”

He hooked his little finger around hers.

They both laughed.

Then sealed the childish promise with smiles neither of them believed would ever fade.

The memory disappeared.

Kai covered his face with both hands.

”...I’m sorry.”

Luna let out a bitter laugh.

”You always apologize after.”

”I know.”

”You never apologize before.”

”...I know.”

Silence settled over the apartment.

The older Kai walked toward the shattered window overlooking the city. Broken glass crunched beneath his shoes as he rested one hand against the cracked frame.

For a long moment...

Nobody spoke.

Finally—

”It wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Kai looked up.

”What wasn’t?”

”You remembering.”

The older Kai kept his eyes on the skyline.

”I’ve spent two years making sure you never reached this point.”

Kai frowned.

”You wanted me to forget?”

”I wanted you to live.”

The answer came instantly.

”You think remembering saves people.”

He slowly shook his head.

”It doesn’t.”

”It only gives it another chance.”

Kai’s gaze drifted toward Apartment 7C.

The pale hands still gripped the doorway.

Waiting.

Listening.

Watching.

”It remembers now.”

The older Kai’s voice had become quiet.

”It knows who made the first bargain.”

Kai swallowed.

”So what?”

A sad smile crossed the older Kai’s face.

”So...”

He turned back toward Kai.

”...it finally knows your real name.”

The temperature in the apartment plummeted.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

Their breath fogged in front of them.

Every light flickered once.

Then died.

The television shut off.

The old laptop went black.

Kai’s phone lost power in his hand.

Only the impossible golden light spilling from Apartment 7C continued shining through the darkness.

Then...

A voice echoed from beyond the black doorway.

Not his mother’s.

Not Luna’s.

Not one of the borrowed voices.

This voice felt older than language itself.

It wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

It sounded inevitable.

It spoke only two words.

”Kai Mercer.”

The instant his full name echoed through the apartment...

Everything returned.

Not fragments.

Not flashes.

Everything.

The rooftop.

Their first meeting.

Their first argument.

Late-night streams that turned into sunrise conversations.

Falling asleep together on the couch after promising they’d only watch one episode.

Ordering too much takeout.

Laughing over broken furniture.

Her stealing his hoodie because it ”smelled like home.”

The first time she said, ”I love you.”

The first bargain.

The second bargain.

Every forgotten morning.

Every erased year.

Every endless loop.

The older Kai.

Every sacrifice.

Every goodbye.

Everything.

Kai staggered backward beneath the weight of memories stolen from him for years.

Tears streamed freely down his face.

He remembered Luna completely.

Not as LunaLove.

Not as a username.

Not as a voice behind a headset.

He remembered the woman who had laughed until she cried over burnt pancakes.

The woman who fell asleep halfway through movies.

The woman who insisted she wasn’t competitive while celebrating every tiny victory like she’d won the lottery.

The woman he loved.

Across the room, Luna suddenly gasped.

”...Kai?”

Her voice broke into a trembling smile.

”You remembered.”

Kai laughed through his tears.

”I remember.”

For the first time in years...

He remembered her face.

Her eyes.

The tiny scar near her left eyebrow from falling off her bike when she was thirteen.

The way she wrinkled her nose whenever she laughed too hard.

The way she’d unconsciously reach for his hand whenever they walked together.

Every tiny detail came rushing back.

His heart felt whole again.

Complete.

Across the room...

The older Kai didn’t smile.

His expression filled with quiet despair.

”...We ran out of time.”

Kai looked toward him.

”What?”

The older Kai took one slow step backward.

His body...

Began fading.

Not dramatically.

Not in a burst of light.

Quietly.

Like morning mist disappearing beneath the rising sun.

Kai’s eyes widened.

”No.”

The older Kai smiled gently.

”You finally remembered.”

He looked... relieved.

”And now...”

His gaze drifted toward the black doorway.

”...I’m no longer needed.”

His outline became transparent.

Daniel stepped forward instinctively.

”Wait!”

The older Kai looked at each of them one last time.

His eyes lingered on Kai.

”You only get one chance.”

Kai reached toward him.

”What chance?”

The older Kai’s smile softened.

”To end it.”

Before Kai could ask another question...

The older Kai disappeared.

No flash.

No sound.

No final words.

He was simply...

Gone.

Silence filled the apartment.

Then something struck the hardwood floor with a soft metallic clink.

Kai slowly looked down.

Resting where the older Kai had been standing...

Was a small silver ring.

He picked it up with trembling fingers.

The inside of the band had been engraved.

Five simple words.

Until you remember me again.
