Kai read the message three times.

Now you know you can see me.

The words refused to change.

No second message appeared beneath them.

No image loaded.

No smug emoji.

No taunting follow-up.

Just six simple words sitting in the middle of his screen with an almost unbearable patience, as though whoever had sent them knew there was no need to rush. They could wait forever.

Kai stared for another long second before locking the phone and shoving it deep into his pocket.

”I’m done reading messages.”

The declaration sounded more like a promise to himself than anyone else.

Luna released a quiet breath through her headset.

”I think that’s the smartest decision you’ve made tonight.”

Kai rubbed both hands over his face.

”I probably should’ve started with that six hours ago.”

Despite everything that had happened, she laughed.

It wasn’t loud.

It wasn’t even really a laugh.

Just a tiny, exhausted sound that reminded him she was still there.

Still listening.

Still awake.

Still refusing to leave him alone.

Somehow, that tiny sound grounded him more than anything else had.

Silence slowly settled over the apartment.

Not the suffocating silence from before.

An ordinary one.

Outside, voices drifted through the hallway.

Daniel spoke quietly to the officers.

Someone answered.

A police radio crackled with static before another officer acknowledged a call somewhere else in the building.

Someone coughed.

Boots shifted against the tile.

A door opened farther down the hallway.

Another apartment.

Another life continuing as if the world hadn’t spent the last several hours unraveling.

Real sounds.

Human sounds.

Kai hadn’t realized how desperately he’d missed them.

He leaned against the kitchen counter and finally noticed how violently his hands were trembling.

The adrenaline was wearing off.

His entire body suddenly remembered everything it had been ignoring.

His shoulders burned from sitting tense for hours.

His neck felt stiff enough that turning his head hurt.

His eyes ached from staring at monitors and phone screens until everything blurred together.

His throat was painfully dry.

His stomach growled, reminding him he hadn’t eaten since before the stream.

Even breathing felt strangely exhausting.

”I need water.”

Luna answered immediately.

”Please.”

He walked to the sink, half expecting something impossible to happen the moment he turned on the faucet.

Nothing did.

Water poured into the glass with an ordinary, almost beautiful sound.

He filled it to the top and took a long drink.

Cold.

Clean.

Real.

He emptied half the glass without stopping.

Only then did he realize just how thirsty he’d become.

”It’s kind of amazing,” he muttered, setting the glass down. ”Apparently surviving supernatural nightmares doesn’t cancel dehydration.”

The joke fell flat.

Not because it wasn’t funny.

Because there was nobody left to hear it.

No chat.

No flood of laughing emotes.

No sarcastic donations telling him to hydrate.

The silence afterward felt...

Lonely.

Kai frowned.

That realization caught him completely off guard.

He missed the chat.

Not because they’d been helpful.

Most of them absolutely hadn’t.

Half of them had been making terrible jokes while his sanity unraveled.

But they’d been there.

A constant wall of voices.

Thousands of strangers witnessing the same nightmare.

Now...

The apartment felt emptier than it had all night.

”You miss streaming.”

Luna said it so casually that Kai nearly choked on another sip of water.

”...Was it really that obvious?”

”You looked at your second monitor three times.”

”I wasn’t.”

”You were.”

Kai sighed.

”I hate that you’re always right.”

”I know.”

”You sound way too happy about that.”

”...Maybe a little.”

He smiled despite himself.

”You enjoy winning arguments that don’t exist.”

”I do.”

”You should probably work on that.”

”I probably won’t.”

The conversation lasted less than a minute.

It shouldn’t have mattered.

Yet somehow those sixty seconds reminded Kai what normal people sounded like.

What ordinary conversations felt like.

Then Derek cleared his throat.

”Kai.”

The warmth vanished.

”Yeah?”

”I’ve been going back through everything that’s happened tonight.”

”And?”

”I think we’ve all overlooked something.”

Kai pushed himself away from the counter.

”What?”

Derek hesitated.

Then spoke with the same careful tone he used during speedrun analyses.

”Nothing actually attacked you.”

Kai blinked.

”...That’s your conclusion?”

”I’m serious.”

Kai leaned against the kitchen island.

”The texts.”

”The stream.”

”The apartment.”

”The hallway.”

”The wall.”

”They terrified you.”

”They manipulated you.”

”They followed you.”

”But physically...”

Another pause.

”When did anything actually hurt you?”

Kai frowned.

He searched backward through the night.

The smiling man behind the officers.

Never approached.

The reflectionless officer.

Stayed outside.

The stream.

Never reached through the screen.

The knocking.

Never broke the walls.

The anonymous messages.

Only appeared when he looked.

Even the impossible apartment.

It had waited.

Always waited.

His stomach tightened.

”...Nothing.”

”Exactly.”

Derek sounded almost relieved that Kai had reached the same conclusion.

”Everything reacts.”

”It observes.”

”It manipulates.”

”But it never crosses the line.”

Luna spoke quietly.

”I noticed that too.”

Kai looked toward his headset.

”You did?”

”I wasn’t sure if it mattered.”

”It does now.”

Silence filled the apartment again.

Then Luna whispered something that changed everything.

”I think there are rules.”

The words settled heavily between them.

Rules.

Not randomness.

Not chaos.

Rules.

Kai slowly rubbed his temples.

”If that’s true...”

He glanced toward the bedroom.

”...Then why does it keep trying to get me to do things?”

Luna answered almost immediately.

”Because...”

She hesitated.

”...maybe it can’t.”

Kai looked up.

The implication struck him so hard he almost laughed.

”It needs me.”

Nobody answered.

Nobody had to.

His mind raced backward through every impossible encounter.

Open the door.

Look through the peephole.

Answer the phone.

Read the text.

Watch the stream.

Touch the wall.

Every single encounter shared one thing.

A choice.

It never forced him.

It suggested.

It tempted.

It waited.

It asked.

His pulse quickened.

”It keeps asking.”

”Yes.”

”And every time I refuse...”

”It finds another way.”

Kai slowly sat down in his desk chair.

His thoughts felt clearer than they had in hours.

Not because he finally understood what was happening.

Because he understood something even more important.

Limits.

Rules meant limits.

Limits meant weaknesses.

Whatever this thing was...

It wasn’t unstoppable.

It needed cooperation.

Permission.

Curiosity.

Attention.

His phone buzzed inside his pocket.

He ignored it.

Another vibration.

Longer this time.

Still he refused.

Buzz.

The phone trembled continuously against his leg.

Every instinct screamed at him to check it.

What if it was Daniel?

What if it was Milo?

What if someone actually needed him?

He clenched his fists.

”No.”

Nobody responded.

He wasn’t talking to Luna.

Or Derek.

He was talking to himself.

The vibrations continued.

Twenty seconds.

Thirty.

Forty.

His breathing grew heavier.

He’d never realized how addictive notifications were until every buzz felt like a hook pulling at his attention.

Finally...

Silence.

The phone stopped.

Kai let out a slow breath.

His shoulders relaxed.

For the first time that entire night...

He had ignored it completely.

No glance.

No curiosity.

Nothing.

”I think...”

He smiled weakly.

”...I just won.”

”You did.”

Luna sounded genuinely proud.

”I’m proud of you.”

The words hit him far harder than they should have.

His smile slowly disappeared.

Nobody had said that to him in...

He couldn’t remember.

Months?

Years?

He stared down at his hands.

”...Thanks.”

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

Outside the apartment, the darkness had begun to fade.

A pale gray light seeped through the blinds.

Not sunlight yet.

Just the promise of it.

The city beyond his window slowly emerged from the night.

Buildings regained their shape.

The rain had stopped.

Cars began moving again.

Somewhere below, a garbage truck rumbled through the street.

Life.

Normal life.

Morning.

Daniel knocked gently.

Not urgently.

Not fearfully.

Just a polite knock.

”Mr. Mercer?”

Kai walked toward the door, stopping well short of touching it.

”Yeah?”

”The building manager called.”

”What about?”

”He’s sending a locksmith.”

Kai blinked.

”...A locksmith?”

”Given everything that’s happened tonight...”

Daniel sighed.

”...everyone agreed replacing your locks is probably a good idea.”

Kai actually laughed.

The sound surprised him.

For the first time all night...

Something made sense.

”Fair enough.”

”You don’t need to open the door.”

”We’ll replace everything from out here.”

Kai looked toward Luna’s Discord icon.

”What do you think?”

She answered without hesitation.

”I think daylight changes things.”

”So do I.”

Metal clinked outside.

A drill whirred briefly.

Someone removed the deadbolt.

The sound of screws hitting a small plastic tray echoed faintly through the hallway.

Five quiet minutes passed.

No whispers.

No anonymous messages.

No impossible footsteps.

No smiling figures.

Just workers doing their jobs.

Eventually Daniel knocked again.

”Done.”

Kai waited.

One minute.

Then another.

Nothing happened.

No vibrations.

No texts.

No hidden laughter inside the walls.

The apartment felt...

Still.

Not safe.

Not yet.

But quieter.

As though something had retreated with the coming dawn.

Kai closed his eyes.

Maybe...

Just maybe...

The night was finally over.

A soft electronic chime interrupted the thought.

Not his streaming PC.

Not his phone.

The sound came from somewhere behind him.

Kai slowly turned.

His old laptop sat on the bookshelf.

The one he’d stopped using years ago.

The battery had died months earlier.

He’d never bothered replacing it.

The lid lifted by itself.

Slowly.

Silently.

Like invisible hands were opening it with deliberate care.

The dead screen flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then glowed pale white.

A tiny green webcam light blinked on.

Kai felt every muscle in his body tense.

The operating system never loaded.

No desktop appeared.

No login screen.

Only a black display.

Then...

White letters slowly typed themselves across the center of the screen.

One character at a time.

Rule One learned.

The sentence vanished.

Another replaced it.

Forty-six remain.

Nothing else happened.

No cursor.

No sound.

Just those three words lingering on the screen.

Kai stared at them.

His exhaustion disappeared in an instant.

He had spent the entire night believing he was surviving random horrors.

But this wasn’t random.

Someone...

Or something...

Was teaching him.
