Yandere Stream

The screen went black.

For a heartbeat, Kai thought the laptop had finally given up.

Its ancient fan fell silent, and the glow that had illuminated the apartment vanished, leaving him standing in complete darkness. He waited for another impossible image, another distorted photograph, another message that would tear apart whatever little certainty he still had.

Nothing came.

Then the apartment lights returned.

One by one.

The lamp beside the couch flickered to life first, followed by the dim kitchen light. The microwave clock blinked 6:01 AM in lazy green digits, resetting after the brief outage. His streaming PC hummed softly as the monitors woke from sleep, their familiar startup glow filling the apartment.

Ordinary sounds returned.

The refrigerator compressor kicked on.

Water dripped somewhere beneath the kitchen sink.

A car rolled past outside.

Then...

Birds began singing.

Kai hadn’t realized how desperately he’d needed to hear something so completely normal.

He stood motionless, coffee table at his knees, staring toward the window as the reality settled over him.

Morning.

Real morning.

Pale orange sunlight slipped through the blinds, painting narrow bars across the floor. After an entire night spent beneath monitor glow, static, and impossible darkness, the sunrise almost looked fake.

Like something his exhausted mind had invented.

Daniel knocked gently.

”Mr. Mercer?”

Kai answered without taking his eyes off the window.

”...Yeah?”

”The sun’s up.”

A tired smile tugged at the corner of Kai’s mouth.

”I noticed.”

A brief silence followed before Daniel asked,

”You want us to come back later?”

Kai slowly looked around the apartment.

The hidden writing on the walls.

The old laptop sitting innocently on the desk.

The shattered picture frame still lying near the doorway where he’d dropped it hours ago.

Everything looked...

Smaller.

Less overwhelming.

The daylight hadn’t erased what had happened.

But it had stolen some of the night’s power.

He let out a slow breath.

”...No.”

He rubbed a hand over his face.

”I think...”

”...I’d actually like to open the door.”

Silence.

Luna spoke almost immediately through the headset.

”Kai.”

”I’m not inviting anyone strange inside.”

”I know.”

”I’m inviting Daniel.”

Another pause.

Then Luna answered softly,

”...Okay.”

”I trust him too.”

Kai walked toward the entrance.

Each step felt strangely heavy.

His hand hovered over the new deadbolt.

Then stopped.

His pulse began to climb again.

Not because he expected another trick.

Because the last time he’d touched that lock...

Everything had spiraled into something impossible.

His fingers slowly wrapped around the handle.

”Luna?”

”I’m here.”

”If something goes wrong...”

”It won’t.”

”You don’t know that.”

”No.”

Her voice carried a quiet certainty.

”But if something does...”

He could almost hear the small smile behind her words.

”...you won’t be alone.”

Kai closed his eyes.

Just for a second.

Then he unlocked the deadbolt.

The new lock clicked smoothly.

No resistance.

No whisper.

No impossible knocking.

He pulled the door open.

Daniel stood exactly where Kai expected him to be.

Rumpled button-up shirt.

Coffee in one hand.

Dark circles beneath tired eyes.

The three officers remained several yards down the hallway, deliberately giving the two of them some privacy.

No reflectionless stranger.

No smiling figure in a hoodie.

Just exhausted people trying to survive an exhausting night.

Daniel held out the spare coffee.

”You look awful.”

Kai accepted it.

”So do you.”

Daniel snorted.

”I’ve had worse mornings.”

”I somehow doubt that.”

A laugh escaped Daniel before he could stop it.

For the first time since everything had begun...

Kai stood in his doorway without fear.

Fresh morning air drifted into the apartment.

It smelled like damp concrete after rain.

Fresh coffee.

Early summer.

It smelled...

Alive.

Daniel glanced around the apartment.

”You mind if I ask something?”

”Shoot.”

”...How much of tonight do you remember?”

Kai frowned.

”All of it.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

”Good.”

Kai raised an eyebrow.

”Why?”

The building manager glanced down both ends of the hallway before lowering his voice.

”Because...”

”...some tenants don’t.”

Kai’s stomach tightened.

”What do you mean?”

Daniel leaned against the wall and sighed.

”I’ve worked here for twelve years.”

”Every now and then...”

He searched for the right words.

”...someone reports strange things.”

”What kind of things?”

”They hear knocking.”

”They lose time.”

”They wake up with bruises they can’t explain.”

”They find notes inside their apartments they swear they never wrote.”

Kai’s grip tightened around the warm coffee cup.

”And then?”

”They move out.”

Daniel shrugged.

”They forget.”

”Life goes on.”

He gave a tired, self-deprecating smile.

”I always blamed stress.”

”Faulty wiring.”

”Old plumbing.”

He looked back toward Kai.

”I’m starting to think I owe the plumbing an apology.”

Kai laughed.

A real laugh.

Not nervous.

Not forced.

Just human.

Daniel laughed with him.

For a few precious seconds, the nightmare loosened its grip.

They were simply two exhausted men sharing bad coffee after a sleepless night.

It almost felt normal.

Then Daniel’s eyes drifted past Kai.

He frowned.

”That’s old.”

Kai turned.

”The laptop?”

”Yeah.”

Daniel pointed toward the desk.

”I thought you said it stopped working.”

”It did.”

Daniel frowned harder.

”I remember helping you carry that upstairs.”

Kai blinked.

”What?”

”When you moved in.”

”I helped you bring it up.”

Kai stared at him.

”No.”

He shook his head.

”I moved in by myself.”

Daniel’s smile slowly disappeared.

”No...”

His expression became uncertain.

”You didn’t.”

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

”You...”

His voice slowed.

”There was someone with you.”

Kai’s heartbeat quickened.

”...Who?”

”I...”

Daniel squeezed his eyes shut.

His breathing became uneven.

”I can’t...”

”I remember talking to them.”

”I remember making a joke about how many boxes the two of you brought.”

His face slowly lost its color.

”I remember...”

”...I don’t remember their face.”

Kai felt the warmth leave his own hands.

”Luna.”

”I’m here.”

”Did I move in alone?”

Silence answered him.

Long enough that he wondered whether she’d disconnected.

When she finally spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper.

”...I don’t know anymore.”

Nobody moved.

The warmth of the morning suddenly felt distant.

The sunlight pouring through the hallway no longer seemed comforting.

Behind Kai...

The old laptop quietly powered itself back on.

No fan.

No startup sound.

Just a faint glow spreading across the screen.

The display remained black.

No desktop.

No photograph.

No blueprint.

Only a single blinking cursor.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Neither Kai nor Daniel touched the keyboard.

Yet letters slowly began appearing.

One by one.

As though invisible fingers were pressing the keys.

You never lived here alone.
