100 Chapter 100: The First Morning 2026-10-14

The elevator didn’t make a sound.

No humming cables.

No grinding gears.

No vibration beneath their feet.

The floor indicator simply changed.

10. 11. 12.

Kai stared at the glowing numbers.

”We’re going down.”

Mrs. Ashcroft nodded.

”Yes.”

”But the numbers are getting bigger.”

”They always do.”

Daniel folded his arms.

”I officially hate this building.”

For the first time since stepping into the elevator, Mrs. Ashcroft laughed.

It wasn’t forced.

It wasn’t nervous.

It was the quiet laugh of someone who had heard that exact complaint dozens of times before.

”Elias used to say something similar.”

Kai looked at her.

”What did he say?”

Her smile widened.

”He said whoever designed this place deserved to step on a Lego every morning for eternity.”

Daniel snorted despite himself.

”...That actually sounds like someone in your family.”

Despite everything, Kai smiled.

”Yeah...”

He looked down.

”...It does.”

The smile faded almost immediately.

He couldn’t remember ever saying something like that.

Yet hearing it attached to Elias felt...

Right.

Comfortably familiar.

Like hearing a favorite song whose lyrics he’d forgotten.

The indicator changed again.

13.

Still no sensation of movement.

No acceleration.

No pressure in his ears.

Only another glowing number.

Kai frowned.

Something else had changed.

”The doors.”

Daniel glanced over.

”What about them?”

”They’re mirrored.”

Daniel blinked.

”Weren’t they always?”

Kai shook his head.

”No.”

He stepped closer.

The polished brass reflected the inside of the elevator with impossible clarity.

Kai.

Daniel.

Mrs. Ashcroft.

And...

Someone else.

His breath caught.

Luna.

She stood beside him in the reflection.

Gray hoodie.

Dark hair tied back carelessly.

One hand rested lightly against his arm.

She smiled.

Not at her reflection.

At him.

Kai slowly turned.

Nothing.

The space beside him was empty.

He looked back.

Reflection Luna was still there.

Still smiling.

Mrs. Ashcroft quietly spoke.

”So you’ve begun seeing both.”

Kai swallowed.

”What does that mean?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, Reflection Luna slowly lifted one finger.

Not toward Kai.

Toward the ceiling.

Kai followed her gesture instinctively.

The elevator ceiling looked ordinary.

Cream-colored paint.

An old brass light fixture.

Nothing unusual.

When he looked back...

Reflection Luna was gone.

Only three reflections remained.

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.

”What happened?”

Kai hesitated.

”I...”

He almost lied.

Instead—

”I saw Luna.”

Mrs. Ashcroft nodded approvingly.

”Good.”

Daniel looked between them.

”I’m getting really tired of being the only one who doesn’t understand anything.”

Mrs. Ashcroft placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.

”No.”

She smiled gently.

”You’re understanding exactly as much as you’re supposed to.”

Daniel frowned.

”I don’t know if that’s reassuring.”

”It wasn’t meant to be.”

The elevator chimed.

14.

The doors remained closed.

No one entered.

No one left.

Yet...

The air changed.

Kai smelled fresh coffee.

Warm bread.

Rain on pavement.

Old books.

A fireplace.

The scent shifted every few seconds.

Like memories drifting through the cabin.

Mrs. Ashcroft inhaled deeply.

”This floor always smells different.”

Kai looked at her.

”What floor is this?”

”The Memory Hall.”

Daniel blinked.

”I thought we were going to the eighth floor.”

”We are.”

She smiled.

”Eventually.”

Kai frowned.

”I don’t understand.”

Mrs. Ashcroft rested one hand against the brass wall.

”You still think this building is measured by distance.”

She tapped the metal gently.

”It isn’t.”

”It’s measured by truth.”

Nobody spoke.

Somehow...

That made perfect sense.

The elevator continued.

15.

Mrs. Ashcroft reached into her grocery bag again.

This time she removed an old cassette tape.

Its white paper label had almost completely faded.

Only one line remained readable.

Loop 944

Kai stared.

”There were...”

He swallowed.

”...that many?”

Mrs. Ashcroft slowly shook her head.

”No.”

”There were more.”

She turned the cassette over carefully.

”We only started counting after Elias realized the days were repeating.”

Daniel’s face lost what little color remained.

”How many before that?”

”I don’t know.”

Her answer came quietly.

”No one does.”

Kai looked at the cassette.

”What’s on it?”

She smiled sadly.

”You.”

Silence.

”You recorded one message after every failure.”

His heartbeat stumbled.

”...Why?”

”So the next you would know.”

She looked down at the cassette.

”It never worked.”

Kai frowned.

”Then why keep doing it?”

Mrs. Ashcroft’s eyes drifted somewhere far away.

”Hope.”

The word lingered in the air.

The elevator lights flickered.

Not because of faulty wiring.

Because something enormous had passed outside.

A shadow slid beneath the narrow crack beneath the doors.

Too large to belong to any person.

Too smooth to belong to any animal.

It moved slowly.

Deliberately.

Daniel noticed it first.

”...Did you see that?”

Nobody answered.

The shadow stopped.

Right outside.

Then...

Three knocks echoed through the cabin.

Soft.

Measured.

Almost polite.

Kai felt every muscle in his body tighten.

Mrs. Ashcroft didn’t even look toward the doors.

”Ignore it.”

Three more knocks.

A warm male voice followed.

”Eleanor?”

Mrs. Ashcroft’s expression hardened.

”It’s using Arthur today.”

Kai frowned.

”Arthur?”

”My husband.”

She answered without emotion.

”He died thirty-eight years ago.”

The voice outside chuckled warmly.

”You forgot your groceries again.”

Mrs. Ashcroft quietly closed her eyes.

For one heartbreaking second...

She looked impossibly old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Then she opened them again.

”You always hated onions.”

The voice laughed.

”I still do.”

Mrs. Ashcroft smiled sadly.

”No.”

She whispered almost affectionately.

”My Arthur never admitted that.”

Silence.

Then—

The voice changed.

Instantly.

Gone was the gentle husband.

In its place came something vast.

Cold.

Patient.

Without anger.

Without kindness.

Simply...

Certain.

”Memory verified.”

The shadow beneath the doors withdrew.

The knocking stopped.

Mrs. Ashcroft finally exhaled.

Kai stared at her.

”You knew it was lying.”

”I’ve had thirty-eight years to learn the difference.”

She met his eyes.

”It remembers facts.”

”It doesn’t understand people.”

Kai felt those words settle somewhere deep inside him.

The creature could imitate a voice.

A face.

A memory.

But love wasn’t made of facts.

Love lived inside contradictions.

Inside habits.

Inside stupid arguments.

Inside tiny flaws no monster would ever think to copy.

The elevator chimed once more.

This time...

The floor indicator didn’t display a number.

It displayed a word.

HOME

The doors slid open.

Beyond them...

Kai saw the Mercer family living room.

Exactly as it had been when he was six years old.

A Christmas tree glowed softly in the corner.

Snow drifted past the windows.

His mother laughed in the kitchen.

His father struggled to untangle a string of lights while muttering under his breath.

Wrapping paper covered the floor.

A little boy—Kai—sat cross-legged beside a pile of unopened presents, bouncing impatiently.

Across the room, a teenage Elias knelt beside the tree, carefully taping a gift shut.

For a long moment...

No one inside the room reacted.

It wasn’t a recording.

It wasn’t frozen.

It was simply...

Living.

Then Elias stopped.

The tape dispenser slipped from his fingers.

Slowly...

He turned toward the elevator.

Toward Kai.

Their eyes met.

Elias smiled.

Not with surprise.

Not with confusion.

With recognition.

Like someone who had been waiting for a promise to finally be kept.

Then, without saying a word...

He raised one finger to his lips.

A silent request.

Don’t let them know you’re here.

And before Kai could even process what that meant...

A child’s voice echoed from somewhere deeper inside the house.

”Eli!”

Little Kai laughed.

”Come help me!”

Elias looked over his shoulder.

Then back at the elevator.

His smile grew smaller.

Sadder.

As if he already knew exactly how that Christmas would end.
