When She Stops Being Dramatic

Chapter 411: Chapter 148: The Green Tea Female Supporting Character in a Period Novel (35)

”Besides, if you’re happy with a delicate little miss who can’t even wash clothes as your daughter-in-law, then you’d better be prepared to suffer in your old age!”

”What can I say? Life isn’t all about romance and the fine arts; it’s mostly about the daily grind. Can your son really wait on Chi Yun’er hand and foot?”

”After all, even someone as good-natured and considerate toward Chi Yun’er as Jiang Zishi eventually gave up.”

’How much sincerity can there really be between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law?’

Seeing the crowd of onlookers grow, Fang Yuying smiled, lifted her chin, and twisted the knife in the two women’s hearts.

With just a few words, she had stirred up trouble for both of them and dragged out the messy entanglement between Chi Yun’er and the two Jiang brothers.

Mrs. Jiang put an arm around Chi Yun’er’s shoulder, stopping her from speaking.

This wasn’t something for a bride-to-be like Chi Yun’er to get involved in. All she had to do was watch from the sidelines.

’How dare she set her sights on my son? Heh!’

Mrs. Jiang coolly looked Fang Yuying up and down:

”Do you really like Yihua for who he is? It seems you’re more in love with the ’outstanding Yihua’ that everyone talks about.”

”He’s like a beautiful piece of clothing to you, isn’t he? Something you see, you like, and you’ll do anything to get your hands on?”

”Did you think I don’t know what you’re scheming?”

Catching sight of Father and Mother Fang squeezing through the crowd toward them, Mrs. Jiang sneered, ”Your family has quite a burden, doesn’t it? Even though you’re their only daughter, your parents favor sons over daughters. They don’t value you at all.”

”You live in a world of your own lies, and to make them seem real, you just keep weaving more lies. For instance, pretending you have a non-existent, incredibly impressive boyfriend, and that you need a respectable job to be worthy of him.”

”And so your parents pooled all the family’s resources, money, and ration tickets to make your wish come true, all in the hope that after you successfully climbed the social ladder, you’d pull them up with you.”

”Let me guess what empty promises you made to your family.”

”Was it that once your job became permanent and you married into the Jiang Family, you’d arrange for your brother and sister-in-law to be transferred to jobs in the city? Or maybe that you’d hand over the entire generous betrothal gift?”

With every word she spoke, Fang Yuying’s expression grew more and more humiliated.

Every single one of Mrs. Jiang’s words had hit the nail right on the head, exposing Fang Yuying’s schemes.

Father and Mother Fang were still lost in their beautiful dream of becoming in-laws with the Jiang Family and hadn’t snapped out of it yet. Now, they just stared blankly at the trio in the crowd.

Mrs. Jiang didn’t give Fang Yuying a chance to interrupt, continuing bluntly, ”And another thing, you should take a good look in the mirror. What gives you the right to be picky about others?”

”You’ve got a weaselly face, flat as a board from front to back, and you use what little cunning you have to scheme against others for your own benefit.”

”Do you really think the whole world revolves around you?”

”My Yunyun is beautiful inside and out. So what if she can’t do housework? In the Jiang Family, the men are the ones who come home to do chores and take care of their wives.”

”This is a new society, with equality between men and women. Besides, our family isn’t burdened financially. After the young couple gets married, we’ll buy them a washing machine. There’s no need to waste time and effort washing by hand.”

”With your hands freed up and time saved, what couldn’t you do?”

”On weekdays, they’re busy with work and eat at the cafeteria. They can clean the house together. There’s no heavy, tiring labor. So how is it that, in your words, marriage is such a miserable affair?”

At first, the crowd was enjoying the satisfying sight of Mrs. Jiang scolding Fang Yuying. But gradually, they started to feel a bit uncomfortable. There’s a huge gap between reality and ideals, just like the distance between being in love and being married.

Who among them hadn’t struggled through the same thing? The initial passion and affection, worn down by time and trivial matters, leaving only exhaustion and resentment.

But the life Mrs. Jiang described was truly enviable.

No burdensome housework, no worries about shortages of money and ration tickets, no tense, endless battles with a mother-in-law... It seemed like life could actually have warmth and beauty...

’Such a humblebrag!’

Listening to this, Fang Yuying’s heart burned with jealousy. Why did Chi Yun’er get to have everything she ever wanted handed to her on a silver platter without having to do a thing?

But as for her... She suddenly saw her parents’ ashen faces, and her heart filled with despair. ’All my efforts, all my schemes... they might all end up being for nothing...’

”So that’s it, you wretched girl! I knew it! I always wondered how, out of all the girls, the top scholar would take a fancy to you when you’re not even that good-looking.”

”It turns out you were just trying to bleed your parents dry so you could live a comfortable life, without a care for whether your brother, sister-in-law, nephew, and niece lived or died!”

After listening for a while, Mother Fang finally understood what was going on. Her joy had been for nothing. It turned out this girl had been playing the entire family for fools.

She was so furious she nearly fainted. With a wild howl, she lunged forward, grabbed Fang Yuying’s hair without the slightest hesitation or mercy, and started tearing at it!

Fang Yuying shrieked in pain. Her previous look of aloof pride was gone, replaced by a grimace of agony. Her face, contorted and savage, made her already plain features look even uglier.

The crowd watched with great interest, but not a single person stepped forward to intervene.

Even a few well-meaning passersby who didn’t know what was going on were stopped and filled in on the situation:

”Why would a big man like you get involved? That’s a mother and her daughter, and the girl’s father and the woman’s husband is standing right there. Who are you going to help?”

”There’s this outstanding young man who was just kind enough to give the young woman a ride, and she ended up latching onto him. Her mother even went around our hospital spreading rumors that their two families were about to become in-laws.”

”The rumor reached the man’s parents, and they were furious. They came here with the real fiancée to set the record straight.”

”And what happened? This young woman wanted her family to pull strings to get her a job, and she wanted a good man on top of that. Where in the world do you find a deal that good? Her lies got exposed, and now the mother and daughter are at each other’s throats.”

”Yeah, if you go up there, are you prepared for the young one to cling to you and demand you take responsibility, or for the old one to follow you home?”

Hearing all this, the passersby got scared off and simply joined the crowd of spectators, silently becoming part of the background.

Security personnel arrived, but they were all men and didn’t dare step in to break up the fight.

But women weren’t strong enough; they might fail to stop the fight and just get dragged into it...

At first, Fang Yuying was getting beaten down by Mother Fang. Back in their town, Mother Fang was a local tyrant, undefeated in brawls against man, woman, young, or old. She was an expert at hitting people where it hurt the most.

Fang Yuying had been beaten by her mother plenty of times as a child. The worst incident was when her mother had hit her so hard she snapped a bamboo pole.

She glared viciously at the crowd of onlookers, none of whom stepped forward to help her, and was reminded of her miserable childhood.

Moreover, she was the one who had gone to the countryside in her brother’s place, and her family had promised they would be responsible for finding her a job. But once she was there, they acted like they couldn’t wait to cut all ties with her!

Otherwise, she wouldn’t have suffered so much in the countryside. Having done so much farm work, Fang Yuying was much stronger now.

Just then, Mother Fang lost control of her strength and ripped out a chunk of her hair. Blood began to trickle out.

Enraged, Fang Yuying abruptly flipped over, pinning Mother Fang beneath her. She began to lash out mercilessly, snarling:

”What right do you have to hit me? From the time I was a child until now, why have you never laid a hand on your sons?”

”*!@#%...! I went to the countryside in place of your son! You promised to find me a job! If I hadn’t lied about being Jiang Yihua’s girlfriend, I’d still be stuck tilling fields in the village...”

”...It’s because you’re both as dumb as a box of rocks! You’re the stupid ones who couldn’t resist the temptation and found me the job...”

”...Who would ever want in-laws like you...”

The crowd was stunned by her ferocious actions and foul mouth. They had never seen such an unfilial daughter, one who would dare to physically attack her own mother in public.

Even Father Fang hadn’t expected this turn of events. He stood frozen for a long moment until someone behind him gave him a push, prompting him to rush forward and pull the two apart.

By now, Mother Fang was dazed from the beating, her whole body aching terribly. Ever since she had started ruling the roost, when had she ever suffered like this?

But looking at Fang Yuying’s savage expression, she actually shivered in fear for the first time and shrank behind Father Fang.

Father Fang said with a cold face, ”Fang Yuying, go back to your dorm and pack your things. You’re coming home with me right now!”
