Gene Unlocking: I Evolve Every Day

Chapter 41: Chapter 39: About to Become Famous

The Zhai brothers, after giving the money, expressed their gratitude a few times before leaving shortly.

Lu Li had a pretty good impression of them, as they offered a reward of two hundred thousand for clues to solve the case, and indeed, they fulfilled their promise by coming to his door after the case was solved.

People who keep their word like that are quite rare in today’s society.

He couldn’t quite understand how Zhai Million, being such a scoundrel, could have two sons so well-mannered.

Just as he was thinking, his mom said in surprise, ”Son, what’s going on?”

His dad, staring at the two bundles of thick hundred-yuan bills on the table, was also dumbfounded, ”Did you help solve a case?”

Seeing the shocked expressions on his parents’ faces, Lu Li knew that they wouldn’t be at ease without a clear explanation.

He obviously couldn’t tell them that he unlocked his gene lock, evolved a super sense of smell and x-ray vision, and then used these abilities to solve the case, right?

They definitely wouldn’t believe him if he said that.

They might even think he was possessed and look for a spiritual healer to exorcise him.

Even if his parents believed he had unlocked his gene lock and evolved,

once they accidentally let it slip and outsiders found out, wouldn’t he be taken away for dissection?

So telling the truth was obviously not an option.

In other words, at this stage, the fewer people who knew his secret, the better.

After a little thought, Lu Li roughly knew what to say.

He smiled and said, ”Didn’t I meet up with Wang Yu for dinner after not seeing each other for a long time yesterday?”

”Yes,” his mom nodded, ”I remember that.”

His dad asked suspiciously, ”How does dinner have anything to do with solving a case?”

”Listen to what I have to say,” Lu Li said half-truthfully, ”During dinner, Wang Yu told me about Zhai Million being dismembered and his body dumped. Although the case was taken over by the city criminal investigation team, he still felt there were many suspicious points, so he dragged me back to the crime scene to take a look. And guess what, we actually found some clues and eventually solved the case by following the leads.”

”Huh?” His mom was a bit dumbfounded, ”That easy?”

Lu Li shrugged, ”What else did you think? Your son isn’t Sherlock Holmes.”

Although his dad and mom were still a bit puzzled, upon further thought, their son’s words made sense.

His mom laughed and stood up, ”You really got lucky, unintentionally stumbled upon clues to solve the case and earned an extra two hundred thousand!”

His dad sighed, ”That’s exceptionally good luck; certainly our ancestors’ blessings. I have to go buy some offerings and pay respect at the ancestral grave tomorrow to thank them for their protection.”

Lu Li broke into a sweat, thinking to himself how superstitious his dad really was.

Fearing his parents would keep asking questions, he quickly changed the topic, ”Mom, Dad, since I’ve earned an extra two hundred thousand, let me give you some to spend.”

His mom loudly exclaimed, ”What do I need your money for? Save it up for getting married! Your dad and I have some money at hand.”

His dad acknowledged with a nod, ”Although we didn’t earn much, we’ve saved up a bit over the years. We don’t need you to give us money.”

Lu Li genuinely wanted to give some money to his parents.

He even took out several thousand to forcefully try and give them.

However, his dad and mom were determined and refused to accept it no matter what.

In the end, having no other option, Lu Li had to put the money away himself.

Just after finishing the conversation about the money,

Lu Li pointed to the kitchen, ”Mom, Dad, you guys rest a bit while I go make dinner for you.”

His mom, who had earlier scolded him upon returning home, suddenly changed her attitude.

She grabbed Lu Li and said, ”Hey, you seldom come home, how could I let you cook?”

His dad nodded in agreement, ”Exactly.”

His mom turned her head, ”Old Lu, you go make dinner.”

His dad was dumbstruck: ”...”

Lu Li almost fainted, initially thinking his mom was going to cook, only to realize in the end she meant for his dad to cook?

...

The next day, in the morning.

Lu Li arrived early at the town police station.

As soon as he entered, he was warmly welcomed by all the leading figures, and a five-thousand reward was even issued to him.

The leaders were extraordinarily enthusiastic, showering Lu Li with compliments.

Lu Li roughly understood why; the ”clues” he provided allowed the town police station to solve the dismemberment case before the city criminal investigation team did.

They must have received praise from higher-ups, hence the warmth.

He wasn’t the type who would not appreciate good favor and didn’t get cocky because of it; on the contrary, he acted very humble.

Subsequently, under the arrangement of the leadership, Lu Li and Wang Yu were interviewed by reporters in the reception room.

In the reception room.

Lu Li and Wang Yu stood by the long sofa.

Opposite them, a female reporter wearing glasses and a male cameraman stood by a single sofa.

The female reporter seemed to be about twenty-five or six years old and quite pretty, resembling Yang Mi to a degree, with the only regret being that she was a bit short, estimated to be less than 1.6 meters tall.

She shook hands with both Lu Li and Wang Yu before introducing herself, ”I am Reporter Jiang Lili from the provincial TV station’s Channel One. It’s a pleasure to interview you, and this is my colleague, Cao Yun.”

”Hello, Reporter Jiang, Mr. Cao.”

”Please, have a seat, Reporter Jiang, Mr. Cao.”

Lu Li and Wang Yu each responded.

The three of them sat down in turn.

The cameraman, after greeting, remained standing behind the camera.

They chitchatted briefly.

Once the cameraman adjusted the equipment, the female reporter began the interview officially, ”The disembodiment case that happened here yesterday was very heinous, causing a strong social reaction. However, when the city’s criminal police team arrived, they didn’t find much substantial evidence on the scene. I interviewed Captain Feng of the city’s criminal police team, and he mentioned that solving this case might be very challenging. Yet, unexpectedly, you two solved the case overnight.”

Lu Li smiled slightly but didn’t speak.

Wang Yu, on the other hand, looked at her earnestly.

The female reporter continued, ”I’m very curious how you two managed to find so much evidence overnight and solve the case in such a short time?”

Lu Li wasn’t keen on gaining fame, and he knew Wang Yu needed this opportunity to ”show face,” so he glanced sideways.

Wang Yu gave a grateful look and then turned to the female reporter, ”Here’s how it happened: Lu Li and I hadn’t seen each other for a long time. He happened to come to our station to handle his passport yesterday, and we met. So, I invited him for dinner, and while catching up, we discussed the disembodiment case. We felt there were many doubts, like why there were no footprints of the body disposer at the scene...”

He spoke eloquently on that side.

It wasn’t much different from working with Lu Li to gather clues last night.

They just omitted the critical info, such as Lu Li’s ”supernatural ability.”

Of course, Wang Yu also added some ”made-up” parts.

Originally, it was Lu Li who used his super smell to uncover the link between Du Yujun and Zhai Million bit by bit.

In Wang Yu’s words, Lu Li had once seen Du Yujun and Zhai Million walking closely arm in arm, which led to imagination and finally gathering critical evidence of human tissue near the slaughterhouse owned by Du Yujun’s husband.

The female reporter inquired in detail about many aspects during this.

Lu Li and Wang Yu answered fluently without any hesitation.

After all, they just slightly adapted the events of last night, not making up lies out of thin air.

The interview lasted about an hour.

At the end, the female reporter couldn’t help but praise, ”Your analytical and observational abilities are really strong.”

Lu Li modestly said, ”Just lucky.”

Wang Yu also followed up with a few humble words.

”Alright.” The female reporter stood up, ”Since the interview is over, I have to go back and write the article. The provincial TV station is expected to broadcast it tonight, make sure to watch it.”

With that said, she left with the cameraman.

Lu Li and Wang Yu saw them off to the door of the reception room.

After seeing the interview car depart, Wang Yu gave Lu Li a hard pat on the shoulder, ”Brother, you really got it!”

Lu Li thought he was talking about solving the case last night and immediately made a ”shh” gesture, ”Didn’t we agree? The credit goes to you, and I take the reward. Don’t be so loud and let everyone know.”

”You were interviewed; it’s impossible for everyone not to know. Besides, I’m not excited about that.”

Wang Yu looked at Lu Li with admiration, ”When you called me this morning, didn’t you mention that Du Yujun’s husband might be a habitual offender?”

Lu Li nodded, ”Yes.”

Wang Yu leaned closer and whispered, ”We re-interrogated him, and guess what? His psychological quality is poor, and he actually confessed to a previous unsolved case. You, my friend, are brilliant. Your analytical skills are unmatched. It’s a waste not to apply to become a police officer with such case-solving talent.”

Huh?

Did I really guess that right?

Lu Li thought to himself that he indeed had a knack for solving cases.

Of course, he wouldn’t apply to become a police officer, as the job is too exhausting.

At this moment, Wang Yu blinked, ”Do you know how valuable it is to be featured on the provincial TV station?”

Lu Li hesitated, ”Not really, what do you mean by that?”

Wang Yu invoked excitement with a loud voice, ”The two of us, once the TV station reports tonight, are almost certain to become famous!”
