Gene Unlocking: I Evolve Every Day

Chapter 35: Chapter 34: Bounty

After getting familiar over the past few days, Lu Li’s driving skills have greatly improved, haven’t they? He drove at a speed of sixty kilometers for dozens of kilometers, much faster than the previous days.

Around eight o’clock in the evening.

Back in the countryside, at the entrance of the building.

”Son, why have you become so thin?”

”Mom, I’ve been on a diet for more than a month after going out, so I’ve lost weight.”

”I didn’t expect my son to look so handsome after losing weight.”

”Hehe, Dad, that’s because of your good genes. Isn’t this because I take after you? Otherwise, how could I be so handsome?”

”You cheeky thing!”

”Hey, by the way, son, where did you get the car?”

After a brief shock at their son’s weight loss, Mom and Dad quickly shifted their attention to the Camry.

Even though the appearance had changed significantly, how could parents not recognize their own son?

Besides, Lu Li’s behavior and voice couldn’t change, so of course, the parents recognized him.

Mom looked at the car in confusion.

Dad was also slightly in disbelief, his gaze continually shifting between Lu Li and the car.

No wonder they were so surprised; after all, their son had just started working this year, having joined only a month ago, how could he afford a car?

Both were extremely puzzled, not understanding where their son’s car came from.

Lu Li took the gifts he bought for his parents out of the car trunk and shouted heartily, ”Didn’t I tell you on the phone this morning, I’ve been promoted to assistant supervisor of the department, and this car was provided by the company.”

”Ah?” Mom said in surprise, ”You weren’t pulling my leg this morning?”

Lu Li, both crying and laughing, said, ”Mom, why would I lie to you?”

Saying this, he lifted up the tea leaves and new clothes he held, ”Dad, Mom, I was in such a rush coming back that I didn’t have time to buy you guys much.”

”Yo, you even brought me Longjing tea?” Dad was extremely happy, stretching out his hand to take it while glancing at Mom teasingly, ”I said all along our son wouldn’t exaggerate, and you didn’t believe me. How about now?”

No one knows a son better than his father!

Mom didn’t believe what I said.

Luckily, Dad did!

Lu Li couldn’t help but feel touched.

”Hey!” Mom rolled her eyes, ”Weren’t you just saying during dinner that our son might be fired and that you were intending to wander to Director Xu’s house to get Xiaoli a job?”

Having been called out, Dad retorted angrily, ”Stop it! You expose me all day long, can’t you let me have a bit of face for even one day?”

Lu Li: ”...”

You were going to find me a new job?

So this is how much you trust me?

Lu Li was almost exasperated by his dad.

”Quickly bring the stuff inside.” Mom couldn’t be bothered with Dad, turning affectionately to her son, ”Xiaoli, coming home so late, you must be hungry? We saved some dinner for you and even slaughtered a chicken. Dad will cook it for you.”

With that, she didn’t go into the house but walked towards the direction of the neighbors.

”Have Dad cook it for me?” Lu Li asked, puzzled, ”Where are you going?”

Close to the door, Dad said irritably, ”Where would she go? She found out you’ve made something of yourself and is off to boast!”

Mom rolled her eyes at Dad, ”What do you know? I’m going to make our son look good and find him a wife, humph!”

Listening to his parents’ bickering, Lu Li couldn’t help but smile. Working away for over a month, he hadn’t seen this heartwarming scene for a long time.

With this thought, he went inside.

As soon as he sat down, Dad brought out all the dishes, ”Xiaoli, your mom made chicken soup. It tastes great. Eat it while it’s hot.”

”Okay.”

Although due to recently discovering a super sense of smell was useless and stopping evolution, theoretically, he wouldn’t get hungry as easily as during active evolution. However, after work, Lu Li went shopping directly, drove home, and didn’t eat anything, so he was starving.

He picked up his chopsticks and started eating.

Dad sat beside him, concerned, ”Why did you think of coming back? Isn’t being promoted to assistant supervisor making you busy?”

Lu Li picked up a piece of braised pork, sweet-talking to make Dad happy, ”Busy, but I missed you guys, so I came back specially to see you.”

Dad chuckled, ”Who else could know your quirks if not me as your dad? Tell me the truth!”

Lu Li had to tell the truth, ”I’m going to the Ugly Country for a competition in a month or two, so I need to get a passport and a visa, so I came back to handle it first.”

”Wow, you’re going to the Ugly Country?” Dad praised repeatedly, ”You’ve really made something of yourself. My Xiaoli is impressive.”

Continuing, as if recalling something, ”I remember your classmate Wang Yu, he’s working at the town police station. You could find him for help; maybe you can get your passport done quicker.”

Lu Li was surprised, ”Wang Yu actually became a police officer? His grades weren’t that great during school.”

”He improved as time went on. He worked hard in high school and later got into the police academy.”

Dad said, then stood up, ”You keep eating, and take care of the cleanup afterward.”

Lu Li said helplessly, ”Where are you going now?”

Dad, full of excitement, said, ”Oh, where am I going? I’m off to visit Aunt San’s place, hasn’t she been bragging about her grandson getting into a prestigious company? I’ll go brag a bit too.”

Didn’t you just say Mom likes to boast? Turns out you’re the same, huh?

Lu Li almost keeled over.

...

The next day, eight in the morning.

Lu Li drove to the town’s police station.

After asking the guard for directions, he was just about to go to the immigration office to apply for a passport.

Suddenly, he saw a group of police officers rushing out from inside.

To his surprise, among them was his old classmate, Wang Yu.

Lu Li quickly waved to greet him, ”Wang Yu.”

There seemed to be an emergency.

Wang Yu didn’t even have time to properly put on his uniform.

Hearing the shout, he was buttoning his shirt while glancing over.

Wang Yu, a bit puzzled, asked, ”Who are you?”

Lu Li slapped his forehead, thinking to himself that he had changed a lot in appearance since school, so how could the other recognize him?

He quickly introduced himself, ”It’s me, Lu Li.”

”Ah? Lu Li?” Wang Yu was full of surprise, ”Wow, I really didn’t recognize you, I didn’t expect you to become so handsome after all these years.”

”I didn’t expect it myself.” Lu Li chuckled and asked, ”What’s the rush, something happened?”

Wang Yu glanced at his colleagues getting into the police car and quickly said, ”Something came up, I’ll catch up with you after I’m done, I’ll send you a WeChat message later.”

Lu Li quickly responded, ”Alright, focus on your work first.”

Wang Yu waved and said nothing more, getting into the police car and leaving.

Lu Li watched the police car drive away.

He then turned and entered the police station.

Upon inquiry, he found out, much to his dismay, that passports had to be handled at the city-level Public Security Bureau’s immigration office.

With no choice, Lu Li had to reapply for his ID card, and he opted for the expedited service.

After all, if the passport and ID card don’t match, it could be very troublesome.

Then, too lazy to go in person, Lu Li simply applied for the passport online.

...

After six in the evening.

Originally, Lu Li was at home preparing to have dinner, but he received a WeChat message from Wang Yu and drove to the town again.

In a small restaurant, a large spread of food and drinks was laid out in front of Wang Yu.

He waved to Lu Li, who had just parked his car by the roadside, and shouted, ”Lu Li, over here.”

Lu Li approached the small restaurant, smiling, ”You’ve already ordered all the food?”

”After a busy day, I’m starving.” Wang Yu pointed to the seat opposite him, ”Sit down, let’s chat slowly.”

Lu Li sat down, clicked his tongue, and said, ”I never realized, back in school, your grades weren’t great, and now you’re a cop.”

”You don’t know how hard I worked in high school.” Wang Yu couldn’t help but sigh with emotion, then somewhat enviously said, ”But still, I’m not doing as well as you, you’ve even bought a car, I remember this car costs around two hundred thousand, right?”

Perhaps seeing Lu Li drive over inspired him.

Wang Yu took the beer originally placed on the table down and fetched a bottle of orange juice with pulp from the fridge, pouring a glass for Lu Li.

Lu Li picked up the glass and took a sip, ”It’s a company car, I couldn’t afford such an expensive one myself.”

Wang Yu teased, ”The company gives you a car too? Are you a leader in the company now?”

Lu Li humbly replied, ”Just a minor manager, not really a leader.”

The two chatted as they ate.

Then, Lu Li, curious, asked, ”Hey, what had you rushing out so early in the morning?”

Mentioning this, Wang Yu suddenly frowned, ”Do you know Zhai Qiang, the first millionaire in our town?”

Lu Li was taken aback, ”My parents mentioned him. They said he made a million in the early ’90s. Although he didn’t keep up with the times later on, he’s still much richer than the average person, supposedly with assets worth tens of millions, right? Why are you asking?”

”He got murdered!” Wang Yu seemed a bit nauseous and couldn’t help but gag, ”Dismembered, the scene was terrifying, the city’s criminal investigation team later showed up.”

Lu Li was shocked, ”What the hell, a dismemberment case in our town?”

”Exactly.” Wang Yu sighed, feeling a bit frustrated, ”The worst part is it’s within our jurisdiction, so life at our station might be tough for a while.”

Lu Li pressed on, ”What’s exactly going on?”

Wang Yu took a bite of Kung Pao chicken, ”No leads yet, but Zhai Qiang’s two sons rushed back from out of town today, very angry, and publicly announced they’re offering two hundred thousand as a reward for any clues leading to the case being solved.”

Saying this, he nodded towards Lu Li and joked, ”So, tempted by the two hundred thousand?”

Lu Li couldn’t help but laugh nervously, ”What’s the point of being tempted, I don’t even know the first thing... ”Wait!Hold on!

I have x-ray vision, super hearing, and super smell.

Seems like I might have a chance to win that two hundred thousand reward.

Lu Li blinked, contemplating whether he could play detective and earn the two hundred thousand reward.
