Gene Unlocking: I Evolve Every Day

Chapter 34: Chapter 33: Super Olfaction

At night, after finishing the training.

Lu Li drove the Camry towards the rental apartment.

Since he got his driver’s license during the summer vacation in college, he had hardly touched a car since then.

Today, getting back behind the wheel, Lu Li felt as if he were facing a formidable enemy on the road.

”It’s too fast, I need to slow down a bit!”

Lu Li carefully reduced the speed from 40 km/h to 30 km/h...

Well, he really wasn’t very skilled, so he had to be cautious.

But on the other hand, having a car really was quite convenient.

At least, after finishing the training, Lu Li wouldn’t have to rush to the bus stop to catch the last bus.

Returning to the rental place.

Lu Li first took a hot shower, then lay comfortably on the bed, picking up his phone to find some drama to watch.

Recently, he had been too busy, but finally had some free time today, so of course, he wanted to enjoy the 25 yuan Youku membership he renewed.

Of course, he was looking for dramas not just for that 25 yuan, but because he knew too little about ”superpowers.” He wanted to see if he could find some inspiration in films and dramas to evolve more abilities.

Searching for dramas featuring superpowers.

Lu Li glanced at his rented single room and thought, ”I have some money on hand now, including the fifty thousand yuan bonus from the company today, currently, cash on hand is about eighty-two or three thousand. Is it time to move to a new place?”

Co-living was ultimately inconvenient; many private matters couldn’t be hidden.

And sometimes, when he wanted to use the toilet, it was occupied, and he’d have to wait.

Anyway, Lu Li was a bit fed up.

”But the way that girl next door chats on the phone with her best friend, it’s really explosive.”

Thinking of the conversation between the girl next door and her friend last night, Lu Li almost had his blood boiling.

Eh, better not think about these unhealthy things, and find something to watch.

He refocused on his phone, wanting to determine the next direction for his evolution through dramas.

There are indeed quite a few dramas about superpowers.

Lu Li was dazzled by the vast array of choices.

Too lazy to distinguish which one was suitable, he clicked on a drama called ”The Girl Who Sees Smells.”

He regretted it as soon as he clicked on it.

Because it was a Korean drama.

In his impression, Korean dramas were generally for girls.

How could a grown man like him watch such a drama?

Then...

Two hours later.

”Tut, this drama is really interesting.”

Lu Li stared at the extremely beautiful face of the female lead on the screen, pondering to himself, ”The heroine’s superpower is amazing, she can see smells with her eyes.”

He wondered if he could evolve a similar superpower like the heroine’s.

But then he thought, seeing smells doesn’t seem to help him make money.

Moreover, Lu Li wasn’t sure if evolving his eyes to see smells would affect his X-ray vision.

After much hesitation, he had a bold idea.

”The eyes can see smells, I’d best not try that for now, but I can change the direction, like evolving my nose to see odor images. Then my nose might be even more impressive than a police dog, who knows, maybe I could even apply to be a police dog trainer!”

Hmm, not joking around.

Alright, Lu Li was just bored and wanted to randomly develop another new superpower, he had no intention of becoming a police dog trainer.

Watched the drama for a while longer.

Seeing that it wasn’t too early anymore.

Lu Li put down his phone to charge.

He suggested to himself that his nose could develop the function of ”seeing smell images.”

Immediately, he fell into a deep sleep.

...

In the dream.

It wasn’t much different from entering a dream before.

Lu Li once again dreamed of the ”Little Golden Man” channeling energy light towards the brain area.

This time, the evolution was slightly different from before.

The energy didn’t gather in just one area.

Lu Li clearly saw the Little Golden Man split the energy light into two streams, most converging in the brain, with a small part lingering at the nose.

This puzzled him.

Wasn’t he trying to evolve a superpower that could see smell images?

Why didn’t the energy light just gather at the nose, but split to the brain as well?

...

Thursday, morning.

At the company’s e-commerce sales department.

Lu Li stood at the front of the crowd, looking at the twenty-four or twenty-five people standing upright.

He coughed lightly, ”Today Manager Wang is on leave, I’ll be hosting this morning meeting on his behalf.”

Brother Cheng, Xiaoqing, and Xiaomei exchanged knowing looks.

Several new colleagues appeared very serious.

This was Lu Li’s first time hosting a morning meeting, to be honest, he was a bit nervous, ”Our department has had a lot going on recently, which has had a bad impact in the company, and I hope you all can take it as a lesson.”

”Understood!”

”We will!”

Xiaozhao and Old Zhu responded loudly, showing their support.

Lu Li nodded and said, ”Today, a few new colleagues are joining us, so let’s take this opportunity to introduce them.”

Saying this, he reported the names of a few people who had newly joined and were under his supervision.

They were copywriter Chen Yingying, stage controller Qian Yu, operator Wu Chen, broadcast assistant Li Shishi, and traffic manager Guo Mingming, among others.

As for the hosts they were initially planning to collaborate with, there were some issues, and communication was still ongoing, so they weren’t included for now.

Anyway, it would take more than ten days for the live broadcast room to be set up, no rush.

After introducing the new colleagues, Lu Li also assigned the day’s tasks.

Finally, as the morning meeting was nearing the end.

Lu Li said, ”Tomorrow I will take a day off to go home, Manager Wang’s mother is ill and hospitalized, so he might not come either, Brother Cheng, please look after the newcomers.”

Brother Cheng immediately said, ”Okay.”

Meeting adjourned.

Everyone returned to their tasks.

Xiaoqing came over pretending to joke, ”Deputy Manager Lu, are you taking a day off tomorrow for a blind date?”

Ever since Lu Li became slimmer and more handsome.

I got promoted to Deputy Manager again this time.

Xiaoqing had been very envious and naturally didn’t want the fat meat to be taken away, so she came over to chat casually.

Lu Li didn’t overthink it and casually explained, ”No, I need to go home to handle my passport. The public security bureau’s entry and exit management department doesn’t work on weekends, so I have to take a day off and take care of it on Friday.”

Xiaoqing sighed in relief and sweetly smiled, ”Okay, take care on your way back. Oh, and I put breakfast in your office. Don’t forget to eat it.”

Saying this, she gave a flirtatious look and turned back to her work station.

Lu Li knew Xiaoqing had a crush on him.

Especially after his promotion to Deputy Manager, she brought him breakfast every morning.

Her enthusiasm couldn’t have been more apparent.

He did have some interest in Xiaoqing as well.

It’s just that work has been too busy lately, leaving no time for developing relationships.

Besides, even if Xiaoqing hadn’t mentioned bringing breakfast, Lu Li would have known.

”She brought me crab roe soup dumplings; she’s really willing to spend on me.”

Lu Li sniffed, catching the aroma of the crab roe soup dumplings wafting through the office door.

Ordinary people definitely wouldn’t be able to smell it.

In recent days, he’s been developing the ability for his nose to see scents.

As a result, for some reason, his nose didn’t gain sight of scents but his sense of smell improved significantly.

The benefits of greatly enhanced smell are yet to be seen, but the drawbacks are plenty.

For instance, if someone farts in the office.

Originally, hiding in his office, he would never smell it.

But with the super sense of smell, he suffers, overwhelmed by the stench.

Luckily, these superpowers can be turned on or off at will.

Otherwise, in this office, he wouldn’t be able to last a day.

However, the super sense of smell is indeed quite powerful.

To say nothing of smelling through a door to detect the crab roe soup dumplings.

With his memory, Lu Li can easily identify where even any crab roe soup dumplings come from.

”This smell, I remember, is from Crab Roe Pavilion’s crab roe soup dumplings. Hmm, their flavor is quite good.”

Lu Li couldn’t help but feel his appetite spike.

He turned and walked towards the office.

Back in the office.

He turned off the super smell.

Sitting down at the desk.

This was Deputy Manager Zhang’s previous office.

The guy was arrested recently.

Lu Li was promoted again to department deputy manager.

So the office naturally became his.

It’s a small office of just over ten square meters.

Besides basic facilities like a desk and water dispenser, there’s basically nothing else.

However, Lu Li was quite satisfied. After all, it’s a private office, and he finally had some personal space.

After finishing the crab roe soup dumplings.

He didn’t rush to throw out the trash.

Lu Li picked up the phone and dialed a number.

Ring.

Ring-ring.

After three or four rings, it got connected.

On the other end came his mom’s voice, ”Xiaoli, calling home this early, are you out of money? How much do you need? I’ll transfer it on WeChat.”

Listening to his mom’s concern, Lu Li felt warm inside.

He didn’t show it in his words, ”Mom, haven’t I told you many times? Don’t call me Xiaoli, if someone hears, they might think you’re calling me Xiaoli, and that’s just too girly.”

His mom scoffed, ”You can’t tell me what to call you. I’ll call you as I please. No more fuss, just tell me how much you need, I’ve got work to do.”

Lu Li really couldn’t do much about his mom, so he said, ”I don’t need money. I called to let you know I’ll be coming back tonight, could you make the bed for me?”

His mom was surprised, ”Oh dear, Xiaoli, why are you suddenly coming back? Did you get fired?”

Lu Li: ”... Couldn’t you think more positively about me? I didn’t just not get fired; I’ve been promoted to Deputy Manager.”

His mom sneered, ”Brag all you want. Just over a month in and you’re a Deputy Manager? Do you think I’m an ignorant rural woman? I may be a woman from the countryside, but at least I finished high school!”

Oh well.

There’s no clear way to explain it to you.

Lu Li couldn’t be bothered to explain further, he might as well show actions.

Like driving the company’s car back home, mom would definitely believe then.

After chatting a bit more, he hung up.

Lu Li sat in the office, propping his chin with his right hand, wondering, ”What can I actually use this super sense of smell for?”

Thinking about it, he activated the super sense of smell.

Wanting to figure out where it could be applied.

Then...

”Ugh!”

A stench wafted in from the office area.

Lu Li’s sense of smell was too sensitive, almost making him vomit up the crab roe soup dumplings he just ate.

Damn it!

Who the hell!

Farting in the office first thing in the morning?

This fart smell wasn’t noticed before; I have to see who it is.

Lu Li looked towards the group and quickly locked onto Xiaozhao.

Alright!

It’s you, kid!

Just wait and see how I deal with you later!

Lu Li thought viciously.

Then...

Hmm, Xiaozhao let out a series of consecutive farts...

Lu Li’s face turned green, and he quickly turned off the super smell.

Okay, he really felt this super sense of smell was truly useless.

It’s not like he actually wants to be a police dog; with such a freakish sense of smell, he really couldn’t think of any use for it.
