Gene Unlocking: I Evolve Every Day

Chapter 38: Chapter 36: Major Breakthrough

The car wasn’t moving fast.

During the ride, Lu Li rolled down the window.

He continuously used his superhuman sense of smell to search for the scent of Zhai Million’s blood along the way.

Unfortunately, he hadn’t discovered anything yet.

They drove for about four or five kilometers.

Lu Li suddenly stopped the car.

He pointed to a luxurious house on the north side of the road and asked, ”Is this Zhai Million’s house?”

Sitting in the passenger seat, Wang Yu looked surprised, ”How did you know?”

Lu Li couldn’t very well say that he smelled the scent of Zhai Million’s blood here, right?

It’s just that the scent of Zhai Million’s blood in that house was extremely rancid.

He had just used his x-ray vision to look inside and found that the scent was coming from the wastebasket next to the toilet on the second floor.

There was no need to guess; it was evident that Zhai Million probably had a condition like hemorrhoids, leaving traces when he used the bathroom.

Lu Li was almost nauseated by the stench.

But for the two hundred thousand reward, he endured it as much as he could.

Originally, upon discovering that the scent of blood was coming from the wastebasket, he was about to continue driving to other places.

Suddenly, Lu Li thought of something.

He carefully identified the scent of each person in the house.

Finally, in some dirty clothes in the washing machine, he confirmed what Zhai Million’s scent was like when he was alive.

Immediately after, he started the car again.

He searched around for a while longer.

Yet he still didn’t find any clues.

Reluctantly, Lu Li drove back the way they came.

Heading straight towards the south side of the bridge.

This time, although they didn’t find anything, because of the earlier incident of finding a drop of blood, Wang Yu surprisingly didn’t make a fuss.

...

They arrived in town.

Near the town health clinic.

Lu Li stopped the car by the roadside with some doubt, sniffing uncertainly.

Wang Yu looked puzzled, ”What’s wrong?”

The smell of disinfectant was too strong.

Although Lu Li faintly sensed that Zhai Million’s scent seemed to be here when he was alive, he couldn’t be completely sure.

He directly turned off the car and pushed open the door, ”Let’s check out the clinic.”

Wang Yu looked pleasantly surprised, ”A new discovery?”

”Hard to say.”

Lu Li closed the car door properly.

He walked straight into the clinic.

Following the scent upstairs.

Soon, the two arrived on the second floor of the inpatient ward.

Because there’s a formal hospital in the neighboring town.

This health clinic was now practically unused, with no patients at all.

Two nurses in their thirties at the nurses’ station were chatting idly, not even noticing Lu Li and Wang Yu.

Lu Li made a ”shh” gesture to Wang Yu.

They tiptoed to the west end of the corridor where the storeroom was.

Wang Yu was equally quiet, not making a sound.

The storeroom door was shut tight.

Airtight.

Seeing this, Wang Yu whispered, ”The door’s closed, should we go inside?”

”No need.”

Lu Li lowered his voice.

Using his superhuman sense of smell, he detected various different scents inside.

Perhaps no one had been to this storeroom in a long time.

Or very few people come here.

There was a musty smell inside.

Anyway, it was quite pungent.

However, even with Lu Li’s superhuman sense of smell, he still detected a trace of Zhai Million’s scent from when he was alive inside.

Very faint.

If the door had been open, it likely would have dissipated long ago.

Lu Li thought to himself: ”Zhai Million had been here, luckily the door was always closed, so the scent remained. Otherwise, even with my superhuman sense of smell, I might not have discovered it.”

Not only did he smell Zhai Million’s scent.

But he also caught a faint whiff of a rather unique perfume.

This perfume scent is very subtle.

Lu Li suddenly turned his head to look.

His gaze locked onto the nurse on the left among the two at the nurse’s station.

Wang Yu seemed to notice something, ”Did you find a new clue?”

Lu Li pointed to the nurse on the left, ”Go and ask what her relationship with Zhai Million is exactly.”

Wang Yu hesitated, ”Are you sure there’s a connection between her and Zhai Million?”

Lu Li replied, ”I’m certain, and there’s a very high possibility she’s the key to solving the case.”

”Alright, let’s go ask her.”

Wang Yu took the lead and walked towards the nurse’s station.

Lu Li followed closely behind.

They arrived at the nurse’s station.

Only then did the two nurses realize someone had arrived on the floor.

The round-faced nurse on the right looked up and asked, ”Is there something you need?”

Lu Li gave Wang Yu a meaningful look.

Wang Yu took out his credentials and said, ”I’m Officer Wang Yu from the town police station, and I’d like to ask you a few questions.”

Perhaps it was because Wang Yu identified himself.

Lu Li clearly saw a flicker of panic in the eyes of the silent nurse on the left.

The round-faced nurse didn’t think much of it, ”Feel free to ask whatever you need.”

Wang Yu nodded and looked at the beautiful nurse on the left, ”Do you know Zhai Qiang?”

The nurse’s pupils dilated, and she flatly denied, ”I don’t know him!”

The round-faced nurse hesitated to speak but eventually remained silent.

Wang Yu frowned, ”You really don’t know Zhai Qiang?”

The nurse with the oval face became more assertive, impatiently saying, ”I said I don’t know him, so I don’t. Why are you so annoying?”

Seeing her deny it, Wang Yu was unsure how to continue questioning and looked to the side.

Lu Li smiled faintly, ”Alright, then we’ll have our superiors at the station get a warrant to access your organization’s surveillance footage.”

At these words, the oval-faced nurse’s expression changed drastically.

Lu Li didn’t press further, just quietly watched her.

After a moment, the oval-faced nurse sighed deeply and admitted, ”I do know Zhai Qiang, but I truly don’t know who killed him.”

Wang Yu’s eyes lit up, and he gave a thumbs-up to Lu Li under the nurse’s station.

Lu Li’s gaze was penetrating, ”What is your relationship with him?”

The oval-faced nurse forced a smile, ”Just ordinary friends, we message each other when we’re bored.”

Lu Li chuckled softly, ”Is that so? I heard from others that before he was killed last night... he came to the health clinic to find you?”

The oval-faced nurse’s face turned pale, she trembled with her lips several times, but still resolutely said, ”He did come to see me, but I truly don’t know who killed him.”

Lu Li asked again, ”Why did he come to find you?”

The oval-faced nurse’s attitude suddenly changed, spiritedly saying, ”How is it your business? If you want to check the surveillance footage, go ahead, but he was lively and well when he left here, and I was working here all night. My colleagues can testify. Now, we’re going back to work, please don’t bother us anymore, okay?”

Lu Li and Wang Yu exchanged a glance, knowing they couldn’t get more information.

They said nothing more.

They turned and walked towards the staircase.

...

Outside.

After holding back for a while, Wang Yu immediately said, ”Old Lu, that woman is definitely connected to Zhai Million’s murder!”

Lu Li responded, ”Judging by how strongly she reacted, there’s a high chance she’s involved in this murder case in some way.”

”You’re amazing!” Wang Yu gave another thumbs-up, ”You found a trace of Zhai Million’s blood at the bridge, then led me around a bit and discovered that this nurse might be connected to this murder case. Old Lu, you’re incredible!”

Before Lu Li could respond, Wang Yu’s expression turned sour again, ”It’s just that she’s unwilling to talk about Zhai Million, and without solid evidence, we can’t summon her. Even if we suspect her involvement in Zhai Million’s murder, there’s nothing we can do.”

Lu Li said, ”I have a plan.”

Wang Yu, who had been wearing a bitter expression, suddenly looked hopeful, ”Really? What’s the plan?”

Lu Li didn’t respond directly to his question but said, ”Can you get all her information for me? Ideally, details about her family, names, and occupations, everything.”

Wang Yu immediately said, ”I took a sneak peek at the nurse’s station earlier. Her name is Du Yujun. As for her family information, I’ll have to make a call, but I should be able to get it soon. Hey, don’t keep me in suspense, tell me, what’s your plan?”

Lu Li replied mysteriously, ”I’ll tell you once you get her information!”

By now, Wang Yu no longer harbored any of his initial teasing and distrust.

He resolutely and spiritedly said, ”Alright, I’ll definitely complete the task given by the boss!”

Indeed, after the recent events, Wang Yu had started to believe that Lu Li could solve the case.

After all, there was no evidence at first.

Now, they not only found a drop of what could be Zhai Million’s blood.

They also found that the nurse seemed to have a tangled relationship with Zhai Million, and continuously tried to cover it up.

This isn’t just a simple matter of a major breakthrough in the case.

If they could break through the defenses of the oval-faced nurse, they might be able to crack this sensational case!

Naturally, how could Wang Yu still have any doubts about Lu Li?
