Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 1547: Chapter 40: Xiushui River Town_4

And in this era of war, everything has changed its appearance.

The curtain walls of the Space City in the city center are pitch-black with large holes, collapsed floors exposing broken slabs and chaotic rooms. The streets on both sides of the city are piled with rubble and ruins.

On the ground of the airport, waist-high wild grass has grown from the cracks, and the battered terminal hall stands silently, facing the half-collapsed repair workshop in desolate contrast.

The nearby industrial district factories and warehouses have long been abandoned. The steel frameworks are covered with brown rust. Once shiny signs and advertisements have become ragged, swaying in the wind and occasionally hitting the iron frames with a clanging sound.

If not for the trenches interwoven across the city’s outskirts and the fortresses built from factory buildings, if not for the dense Suss Mecha and the sporadic fierce fighting sounds from afar, people might think these are dead cities.

Corporal Doumi crouched low, squeezed through the gap between two concrete slabs, and cautiously glanced at the southern end of the street before quickly darting across with a portable energy machine gun.

Only when he ran to the corner of a considerably collapsed gray building did he sit down against the wall, gasping heavily.

Beside him, several Chuckna Soldiers who had been following behind also stopped, sitting in a row, panting heavily while warily observing the surroundings with their still distinct eyes on dirty faces.

Two warriors blocked the two ends of the corner, guns resting on the ruins, scanning for potential enemy routes.

This is the East District of Xiushui River Town.

Since the Suss’s lightning invasion of Sunset Mountain, the garrison at Xiushui River Town has been resisting using the still stable outer defense and the still sufficient supplies at the base.

From highway battles to city outskirts, then from outskirts to bustling city areas, finally, it’s endless dark alley battles.

The West and Southern Districts of Xiushui River Town have already fallen into the hands of the Suss people.

Doumi heard that last night, Suss people from the units entering from the West District joined forces with the flanking troops to attack the Northern District’s allied lines. The whole night was a bloody battle, and many streets in the Northern District have fallen into enemy hands.

This news is obviously true. Because when he got up from the basement of an abandoned building at the Will Industrial District this morning, he saw many wounded and medical staff at the temporary camp.

Most of the wounded were warriors stationed at the Northern District Second Regiment.

A morning downpour turned the whole sky gray. On open ground between ruins, gray-black dirty water foamed, overflowing the ankles. Temporary medical tents set up among the ruins made crackling sounds in the rain.

Workshops with broken roofs and ceilings became interim hospitals. Hundreds of soldiers lay on stretchers, looking dully at the high ceiling, where rain blew through holes.

Medical staff were busily working. Some civilian girls serving as nurses turned pale at the horrific wounds or the protruding white-red bones. Those with frail nerves either vomited continuously or cried until they became limp.

When so many soldiers gathered together, the scene was indeed spectacular.

Doumi believed those girls would get through it. At least before he led his team away, he saw a few girls with still pale faces starting to help bravely.

Among these girls, one with long, smooth black hair and gracefully curved eyebrows looked very pretty.

Doumi naturally thought of her and naturally felt that even if he needed to lie in a hospital bed to know her, it wouldn’t matter.

Just unsure if he still has the chance.

He spat fiercely and checked the time.

One more block to the destination, with twenty minutes left. This means his action is ahead of schedule, and he still has enough time to daze a bit.

Breathing heavily, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his chest.

This city is filled with Suss people, filled with their ugly Mecha. If the Northern District falls, the troops will only have the East District as the last stronghold. If today’s counterattack doesn’t yield some effect, perhaps before evening, the enemy might rush into the East District.

Then where could that girl hide?

This might be his last battle, possibly her last day.

When he falls before the enemy’s Mecha, what would she be doing?

Bandaging wounds or strenuously tucking her black hair under the nurse hat? When time passes and war ends, if she survives, would she know that on this morning, a corporal so filthy looked at her dazedly for ten minutes?

Doumi shook his head, amused by his sudden whimsical thoughts.

His Armored Camp belongs to the Chuckna 352 Armored Division. Their main force has retreated to the Sunset Mountain Satellite City. Only this camp remained at Xiushui River Town to cover the rear.

After long fierce battles, the camp’s Mecha have dwindled to less than a hundred. Those who lost Mecha picked up infantry weapons, not to mention those around him, less than hours ago were Mechanic Soldiers or cooks wielding ladles.

Thinking of this, Doumi glanced at the big-bearded Allen following him.

Allen looked cluelessly wide-eyed at Doumi.

Doumi smiled, showing teeth bright against his filthy face.

Allen, the black-hearted cook, really cut down two Suss Soldiers with a kitchen knife yesterday.

At that time, amidst changing winds and clouds, his blood-soaked intimidating figure standing on the ruins shattered the evil image of him sniffing while frying, startling the warriors as if seeing a celestial being, and he was praised the whole night.

Sadly, there are too few cooks like Allen.

This is the last counterattack by the Xiushui River Town defenders. The 352 Division, 1913 Division, and other Chuckna Soldiers who retreated from the frontlines further west all emerged from different corners of the city today, gathering to fight.

Though there are less than a thousand Mecha, the rest all being infantry, the headquarters still hoped to launch an offensive southward at the last moment, slowing the Suss people’s advance a bit.

Doumi checked the time again and stood up, quickly darting to the warriors guarding, whispering about their observations.

The warrior’s head-shaking response puzzled Doumi.

Though the Suss people haven’t attacked the East District yet, their assault outside the East District defense lines has been relentless.

And along this route, having crossed two blocks where Suss people normally wouldn’t rush through, he found no Suss, nor heard any sound of fighting.

Everything seemed unusually abnormal.

Yet, this is good for Doumi. Once through the next block, he can reach the designated position, launching the counterattack against the enemy in fifteen minutes.

That time, many Chuckna people from all corners of city ruins will swarm forth, charging at the enemy without hesitation.

He gestured, ready to order the advance, when suddenly distant artillery sounds erupted.

The sound seemed to suddenly enter audible range from afar, at first faint and distant, gradually growing louder, until finally, like rolling thunder, sweeping towards him.

Doumi checked his watch for the third time and waved at the bewildered warriors, then darted out first.

The troops must have launched ahead of schedule!

Thinking this, he frantically sprinted down the empty street.
