Chapter 100: Chapter 68: Your Daughter Is Really Cute

After the Little Fatty investigator left, only Su Xiao remained in the underground passage.

The sound of hurried footsteps grew closer, and Su Xiao also prepared for battle.

The dim corridor seemed to conceal a vast army, and cold sweat gradually appeared on Su Xiao’s forehead.

Judging by the footsteps, the number of ghouls was undoubtedly large, even a few hundred was a conservative estimate.

Although Su Xiao was an investigator, he wouldn’t risk his life for the CCG; he only joined to complete his mission.

Loyalty to an organization with unclear intentions was undoubtedly a foolish act.

Su Xiao hesitated, wondering if he should make a strategic retreat, a strategic retreat, or perhaps a strategic retreat~.

At that moment, the thundering footsteps moved into the distance, and the ghouls did not appear.

Su Xiao exhaled in relief; if there were too many ghouls, he would have no choice but to temporarily retreat.

Something significant must have occurred in the 24th District for the ghouls to be so frenzied.

Currently, Arima Kishou was deep within the 24th District, and on the phone, Arima Kishou mentioned dealing with the ’Root.’

Is ’Root’ the cause of the upheaval? It’s impossible to determine based on speculation alone.

”Here, be cautious; those ’beasts’ have moved away.”

”Husband, can we still return to Central City?”

A conversation between a man and a woman echoed from deeper in the passage.

”Sigh~, we can’t return for now; we can only take shelter on the surface. How did those ’beasts’ break through such a strong blockade?”

”Dad, I’m scared.”

”Rika, don’t be afraid, Dad will get us out.”

In the passage, Su Xiao raised an eyebrow. Listening to the voices, it seemed to be a family of three, a couple with their daughter.

From their brief words, Su Xiao gathered a lot of information.

There might be a large number of ghouls living in the depths of the 24th District, and the ’Central City’ the ghoul couple mentioned might be the deepest part of the 24th District.

The couple also mentioned ’beasts.’

How could there be beasts underground? If ’beasts’ were a metaphor, then Su Xiao thought of a possibility. Those wearing grass skirts might well be called ’beasts.’

Footsteps grew closer, and the ghoul couple, with their daughter, approached the entrance.

What they saw was a figure clad in a white windbreaker, holding a sharp blade. The sunlight at the entrance obscured the figure’s face, revealing only a pair of cold eyes.

”Zero Squad.”

The husband in the ghoul couple spoke, his voice a bit hoarse, his eyes expressing helplessness.

”Husband, it seems we have no choice but to fight.”

The ghoul couple shielded their daughter. She was a short-haired girl with big, bright eyes, particularly endearing.

”Can you let us pass? If we fight to the death, you won’t fare well either, Zero Squad member.”

The male ghoul activated his Heko; it was an Armor Heko. He appeared to have at least two Hekous, one on each shoulder.

Two gray-white Heko great swords formed, wrapping around the male ghoul’s arms.

A Ghoul Speaker! This ghoul must be a Ghoul Speaker, with strength around the SS level. From his stance alone, he wasn’t a pushover, having likely received professional training.

After the male ghoul revealed his Heko, the female ghoul’s Heko also appeared.

She was a Feather Heko, with a pair of massive crimson wings unfurling behind her, at least three meters in diameter.

The larger the Heko, the higher the Rc cell concentration in the ghoul, and the stronger the ghoul’s power.

This ghoul couple were both SS-level ghouls, and judging by their coordination, they seemed to have great synergy.

Sleeping together every day, it’s no surprise they’d be in sync.

”Please, we have never harmed a human, only consuming ghouls who died accidentally.”

The female ghoul’s tone was almost pleading.

”What do I get for letting you pass?”

The couple exchanged glances.

”We just want to leave the 24th District. Besides, are you sure you can kill both of us? I’ve never seen you in Zero Squad.”

The male ghoul’s temper was not good, hostility swelling in his eyes.

”Oh? Are you sure?”

Su Xiao’s mouth turned into a smile as he gripped the Dragon Slash tightly, and it emitted a clear resonant sound.

For some reason, Su Xiao recently felt as if something inside the Dragon Slash had come alive, making it increasingly easier to wield.

When guarding the back gate of the Bronze Tree Base in the 11th District before, he almost felt that the Dragon Slash was assisting him in battle.

Su Xiao chuckled wryly and shook his head. A blade helping him in battle? It’s merely an inanimate object.

Even if weapons could gain consciousness, it wouldn’t be possible for a weapon of Dragon Slash’s grade.

Su Xiao’s smile and the Dragon Slash’s resonant sound gave the ghoul couple a feeling as if their scalp was tingling. The little girl hid behind her mother, as if Su Xiao were a terrifying beast.

A ghoul’s instinct is even sharper than that of a wild beast. The ghoul couple could sense that this human might have slaughtered their kind in large numbers, far beyond imagination.

The couple shivered with fear, not because they feared battle or death, as they were both SS-level ghouls.

But with their daughter right behind them, fighting a too-dangerous foe would endanger her, since blades and swords have no eyes.

Su Xiao gave the couple the impression of being not ’too dangerous’ but exceedingly perilous.

”Aren’t investigators fond of ghoul Kakuhous? Let my wife and daughter go, and I’ll offer you a Kakuhou.”

This man was indeed a ghoul, yet he bore the responsibilities a man should have.

”Husband....”

The female ghoul began to speak but was silenced by a glare from her husband, and she dared not continue.

”Daddy.”

The little ghoul girl clutched her father’s coat corner, tearfully shaking her head.

Su Xiao felt a bit speechless; the family of three before him now needed a lighting director and a camera.

”What happened in the depths of the 24th District?”

Su Xiao suddenly opened his mouth, which delighted the female ghoul. As long as communication was possible, there would be a chance.

”No information....”

The male ghoul began to speak, but his wife hurriedly pulled him back.

”Husband, the previous ’King’ abandoned us, and the current ’King’ is inadequate to lead us two. Now we are Free Men, no longer loyal to anyone.”

After hearing his wife’s words, the male ghoul painfully closed his eyes.

”Go ahead, talk.”

The female ghoul showed guilt in her eyes, sometimes a woman could give up many things for her child.

”Investigator sir, the ’beasts’ have been unleashed from deep in the 24th District. Have you ever seen a primitive-looking ghoul? Now the ’Central City’ is occupied by those ’beasts.’

They’re different from us; aside from eating people, we behave entirely like humans.”

Although the ghoul couple consented to answer Su Xiao’s questions, their answers were brief and to the point.

”Where do the ’beasts’ come from, and who exactly are the two ’Kings’ you mentioned?”

Su Xiao’s two questions seemed to stump the couple.

”Those beasts hail from deep underground; I’m not exactly sure, and as for the two ’Kings,’ it’s a long story.

The ’King’ is the leader of us ghouls; the previous ’King’ abandoned us, and the current ’King’ is a person called Yoshimura....”

”Slap.”

A crisp slap sounded.

The male ghoul slapped his wife.

”Have you forgotten who saved our lives? Remember when Rika was gravely ill? Who specially brought us medicine? It was her father. Without that person, Rika might have died young. If not for the ’King’ baring enmity towards her father, we’d have long since sworn allegiance to her.”

The male ghoul’s face was full of anguish, as if he spent all his strength with that slap.

The female ghoul lowered her head, remaining silent, full of guilt on her face.

”Pfft....”

Blood spattered as a bloody Kakuhou was tossed towards Su Xiao.

”Take the Kakuhou and let my wife and daughter pass.”

Su Xiao received the Kakuhou but did not step aside.

”It seems that you know many secrets. I can let you all pass and offer a safe haven, but in exchange, I need some information.

Don’t underestimate the outside world; SS-level ghouls like you without major protection soon end up as Kuingke.”

The male ghoul was about to refuse but noticed an increasingly dangerous glint in Su Xiao’s eyes.

”Your daughter is very cute; it’d be such a waste if she died, wouldn’t it be?”

The male ghoul’s expression twisted, wishing he could swallow Su Xiao whole. After several seconds, he sighed, opting to compromise.
