Chapter 67: Chapter 35: Making a Name for Oneself 14

Edge of District 14.

This place has an excellent location and beautiful scenery, making it a great place to live.

But the rampant presence of ghouls has driven many humans away, leading to its gradual desolation.

Inside an unfinished building. Hundreds of ghouls are gathered here, sharing information, selling ’food,’ or looking for mates.

”Did you hear? The auction and the Shared Feed Area were both exterminated by the CCG. Those guys really have a death wish.”

”How could I not have heard? Every ghoul in District 14 knows. The CCG branch in District 14 brought in a madman. That guy’s name seems to be something White.”

”His name is Bai Ye. A friend of mine mentioned him. He was active in the Shared Feed Area before and saw that guy with his own eyes...”

A ghoul who looked like a student stopped speaking halfway.

Ghouls around him gathered closer.

”Tell us, don’t stop halfway. What does that lunatic named Bai Ye look like? We must avoid him in the future.”

The student-like ghoul, his hands in his pockets, looked at several ghouls with a half-smile.

”Sigh~, I’m starving. The CCG’s pressure has been increasing recently, and I’ve been hungry for half a month.”

Several ghouls exchanged glances, understanding the student ghoul’s meaning.

”Tagawa, don’t you still have some ’rations’? Share some with him.”

”Why should it be me? My ’rations’ are for emergencies. As for what that lunatic Bai Ye looks like, I have no interest in knowing.”

The gossip spirit of several ghouls burned as they looked unkindly at the student ghoul.

”You, spill it or not.”

”I, too, have the habit of shared eating.”

The student ghoul, young and somewhat timid, showed fear.

But to just submit like that would be disgraceful.

”I’ll tell you, but it’s not because I’m afraid of you. We’re all ghouls, and it’s not easy to survive.”

Several ghouls around exchanged smiles. They didn’t actually have the guts to fight. They were just scaring the student ghoul.

”Motoma, we understand how you feel, hurry up and tell us.”

The student ghoul coughed lightly, then began to recount the information he knew, while the ghouls around listened attentively.

...

In the waist-deep grass surrounding the unfinished building, many figures slowly approached.

”Team One, left flank; Team Two, right flank; Team Three, direct assault; Team Four, block the large exits at the rear.”

Su Xiao crouched in the grass, beginning to move towards the unfinished building.

This time, they had many ghouls to deal with. Thermal scanners detected at least 240 ghouls inside the building, perhaps even more.

If he charged alone, he wouldn’t stand a chance. But with the cooperation of other investigators, the situation was different.

He would lead the charge while those investigators provided cover. After a bloody battle, they would be able to annihilate all the ghouls here.

”Team One is ready.”

”Team Two is ready.”

”Team Three is ready.”

”Team Four has reached the designated position.”

Dragon Slash appeared in Su Xiao’s hand as he lightly pressed his fingers on the Bluetooth earpiece.

”Action.”

With Su Xiao’s order, the investigators of Teams One, Two, and Three simultaneously raised their grenade launchers.

”Bang, bang, bang...”

Dozens of iron cans resembling tear gas canisters were shot into the unfinished building.

Initially, Su Xiao wanted to bomb the ghouls directly with grenades, but strangely enough, the CCG’s armory didn’t provide a large supply of grenades.

The armory’s explanation was that grenades couldn’t effectively kill ghouls and might also impact civilians.

This left Su Xiao puzzled and a bit suspicious of the CCG. They were conducting an expulsion in the suburbs, far from civilians.

Perhaps the CCG headquarters was considering those extreme investigators, fearing they might use high-impact weapons in the city?

It’s possible, though this reason seemed flimsy.

Su Xiao didn’t want to delve into this intrigue. His priority was to complete the main mission.

An in-depth investigation into the CCG now might anger the higher-ups, leading to an uncontrollable situation and potential mission failure.

”Clap, clap...”

Muffled explosions echoed within the unfinished building, and a white mist spread out.

This white mist wasn’t tear gas but CRc gas.

Once the CRc gas reached a certain concentration, it would significantly affect ghouls, lowering the activity of the Rc cells in their bodies, causing their Kakuhou to shrink and prevent them from releasing their Heko.

The time was right. Su Xiao charged towards the unfinished building, followed by dozens of investigators.

Dense gunfire, weapon clashes, and screams continuously rang out inside the unfinished building.

The battle started directly in a white-hot state.

”C, the CCG is here, run!”

The ghouls were in chaos. The sudden appearance of the CRc gas made it impossible for them to even release their Heko.

However, since the unfinished building wasn’t a closed structure, the CRc gas was quickly dissipating.

Su Xiao led the charge with his blade, slashing through several ghouls, carving a bloody path, while those investigators provided rear defense.

With this cover, Su Xiao was significantly more composed in the crowd battle, ghouls falling one after another under his blade.

....

Two hours later, Su Xiao, covered in blood, sat on the ground.

Tearing a strip of cloth from a nearby ghoul’s corpse, he began wiping Dragon Slash.

This battle lasted for a full two hours and was extremely fierce. During it, the ghouls tried to escape, but were intercepted by those Su Xiao had positioned outside.

By then, the CRc gas had been dispersed by the wind, leaving the ghouls completely crazed, fighting desperately.

Tossing the cloth coated with blood and flesh aside, Su Xiao sheathed Dragon Slash.

Looking around, he saw a field of ghoul corpses before him but not a single treasure chest.

Perhaps the previous flash of luck had exhausted his fortune.

After slaughtering these ghouls, Su Xiao earned a total of 367 CCG Contribution Points.

His mission completion rate had become, [First-grade Investigator, Contribution Points 1264/2000.]

Though they had expelled over 200 ghouls this time, not all were killed by him. A large portion was taken down by other investigators, so he could only earn a small number of contribution points.

With the goal of completing the main mission drawing nearer, Su Xiao had an idea. If he could realize that idea, he would gain a lot of free time.

”Xiao, report casualties.”

The death of Shimohira Washitsu had a significant impact on Maniwa Haruo.

But Maniwa Haruo did not choose to take time off following today’s mission. This woman was very strong-willed and stubborn.

”A total of 128 deployed, 78 lightly injured, 15 severely injured, 23 dead, and the remaining 12 only sustained minor scratches.”

After reporting, Maniwa Haruo stood in place. She too had sustained a minor injury.

Hearing this casualty report didn’t surprise Su Xiao.

Expelling ghouls isn’t a simple task; it requires paying with lives. To only lose 23 people was already a complete victory.

If Su Xiao hadn’t led the charge, the number of deaths might have been more than half.

It sounds exaggerated, but that’s the reality.

”Reorganize the troops, the dead to be sent to headquarters, and the severely and lightly injured to the hospital.

How many are still battle-ready approximately?”

Su Xiao was preparing to clean up the next ghoul gathering point; time was running out.

”About fifty people can still continue fighting.”

”Specific number.”

In the slaughter and battle, Su Xiao gradually developed a unique aura.

”Fifty-three people.”

Maniwa Haruo straightened unconsciously.

”Fifty-three people~, not enough. Contact Special Class Shinohara, tell him we’re short on manpower.”

Yukinori Shinohara had previously discussed with Su Xiao that to clean up District 14, the maximum acceptable casualties for Yukinori Shinohara were under a hundred people. Exceeding this death toll would result in Yukinori Shinohara forcibly halting the District 14 cleanup plan.

Wanting to expel a large number of ghouls, there will inevitably be deaths on their side. Battles without any deaths only exist in heroic stories. Su Xiao wasn’t that naive, nor was Yukinori Shinohara. Both clearly understood this in their hearts.

Murderers must have the resolve to be killed.
