Chapter 96: Chapter 64: Plundering the Skies

”Bang.”

A loud noise resounded from the rooftop.

Su Xiao barely stood, using Dragon Slash to support his body; he was close to collapsing.

In the distance, a large dent appeared on an iron water tank, stained with glaring blood, with Kaneki Ken lying under it.

Kaneki Ken was in a miserable state, his body covered in knife wounds, legs twisted, apparently broken by Su Xiao.

Endlessly enduring attacks led Kaneki Ken to exhaustion, and eventually, Su Xiao won.

Su Xiao slowly walked towards Kaneki Ken, ready to cut down this main character.

But he had only taken two steps when he felt his trouser leg being pulled. Looking down, it was Dong Xiang gripping his trouser leg.

”I won’t let you succeed.”

Dong Xiang lay on the ground, her face previously masked by Kaneki Ken, staring at Su Xiao with hatred.

”You wasted three seconds of mine, but it seems you have some value.”

Su Xiao suddenly remembered that Dong Xiang could count as half a heroine, and the other half was Li Shi.

In Dong Xiang’s desperate gaze, Su Xiao raised the sharp blade in his hand.

But in the next moment, Su Xiao suddenly side-jumped, rolling once and half-kneeling on the ground.

”Ding, ding, ding...”

Dozens of sharp objects shaped like red crystals were nailed to the spot where he was just standing.

If Su Xiao had not rolled away in time, he would have been skewered like a porcupine.

A man wearing a black rabbit mask appeared not far off; it was Kirishima Ayato.

At this moment, Kirishima Ayato’s red eyes were filled with rage and maybe a hint of terror?

Kirishima Ayato quickly ran to Dong Xiang, silently shouldering her.

Dong Xiang grasped Ayato’s clothing, her pale hands trembling.

”New and old scores to be settled together. Last time, you almost killed me, but it seems you’re not in good shape now~.”

Kirishima Ayato spoke through gritted teeth, his own close brush with death, and his sister’s near demise, fuelling his deep hatred for Su Xiao.

But mostly his sister’s near death enraged him; Kirishima Ayato joined the Bronze Tree to strengthen his abilities to protect his sister.

Su Xiao stood up, smiling as he looked at Kirishima Ayato.

”You could give it a try.”

Kirishima Ayato’s sudden appearance gave Dong Xiang a way out.

However, Ayato wanting to kill Su Xiao was a pipe dream. Even though Su Xiao was in poor condition, he still had the ability to counterattack.

From the treasure chest dropped by Gecko, Su Xiao obtained the ”Evil Spirits Roar” ring, which came with a certain ability.

Roar (Active), activating this effect allows ignoring pain for 20 seconds. During this period, each attack received increases attack speed by 5%. (Maximum attack speed increase is 50%. Once the frenzy effect disappears, this bonus is void.)

...

As long as Su Xiao activated the Roar ability attached to Evil Spirits Roar, he could ignore pain and fight for 20 seconds.

While at his peak, Su Xiao nearly killed Kirishima Ayato.

Though heavy blood loss left Su Xiao somewhat weak, he might not be able to kill Ayato, but it was definitely possible to take a few parts off him.

Su Xiao’s calm demeanor made Kirishima Ayato hesitate.

However, slinking off without a fight was not an option for Ayato, so he began firing a barrage of red crystal-like Feather Heko at Su Xiao.

With a series of slashes, a large swath of Feather Heko was sliced into countless fragments.

Su Xiao placed his finger on his Bluetooth earpiece, speaking lightly.

”Marude, this is Bai Ye, the rooftop needs support.”

A simple sentence, yet it caused Kirishima Ayato’s expression to change drastically.

”Tch.”

With a look of bitter reluctance, Kirishima Ayato glanced at Su Xiao, then had no choice but to retreat temporarily.

Kaneki Ken was far from Ayato, with Su Xiao standing between them, so Ayato decided to leave Kaneki behind and escape with his sister.

”Support you within a minute, hang in there, Bai Ye.”

Su Xiao’s sudden call for help genuinely startled Marude Itsuki.

”The enemy was scared off, danger averted.”

In dangerous situations, Su Xiao would not face hardship alone; the reason he hadn’t called for help earlier was simply that he didn’t need it.

Moreover, he feared that if other investigators killed Kaneki Ken, no treasure chests would drop.

This wasn’t just conjecture; it was a painful lesson learned.

In the 24th District’s underground, due to Yuna and Arima Kishou, Su Xiao didn’t see a single treasure chest.

This led him to think that if plot characters joined the fight, it could affect the drop rate of treasure chests.

Not that treasure chests wouldn’t drop at all, but the drop rate would be depressingly low, and combined with Su Xiao’s ’Soul of the Great Chieftain,’ the drop rate would be even worse.

Earlier, Su Xiao had the chance to seize Kirishima Ayato and Dong Xiang, after activating the Roar ability, he might have held them.

But with Bronze Tree officers nearby, once the Roar effect ended, he would become helpless prey.

Risking his life for their treasure chests wasn’t worth it.

Su Xiao covered his abdomen with one hand and slowly walked towards Kaneki Ken.

”I will not be defeated here.”

Kaneki Ken struggled to prop himself up, but what awaited him was a flash of a blindingly bright blade, without hesitation.

”Pfft.”

A large spray of blood beads shot out, and a head full of shock flew up.

With Kaneki Ken’s death, a flood of notifications from Reincarnation Paradise appeared. ℯℯ𝑙.

...

After killing Kaneki Ken, Su Xiao realized that Kaneki Ken wasn’t the ’Son of the World’ type of protagonist, as Reincarnation Paradise had initially hinted.

To be precise, Kaneki Ken was only the nominal story protagonist.

Kaneki Ken could not be killed before he became a ghoul.

On the contrary, once Kaneki Ken became a ghoul, his life or death no longer mattered.

Kaneki Ken was unfortunate, as the protagonist, his fate seemed arbitrary once the plot began, unlike protagonists like Naruto or Luffy, who are treated as the favorite sons of the Derivative World.

Su Xiao was the only one left on the rooftop, the crisis resolved.

Su Xiao glanced at Kaneki Ken’s corpse; there wasn’t any enmity between them, they had merely become enemies, and whether the opponent was the protagonist of the Ghoul world was not the primary conflict. With Kaneki Ken’s mental state from before, if Su Xiao did not kill him, it would lead to endless trouble.

Su Xiao had already killed Nishio Jin, and since he was going to stay in the Ghoul world for a while, Su Xiao wouldn’t give Kaneki Ken the chance to grow up and take revenge. That would be the most foolish choice.

When cutting grass, one must remove the roots. If not for the high risk, Dong Xiang wouldn’t have escaped either.

As Su Xiao was about to leave the rooftop, Reincarnation Paradise’s notification appeared again.

[Detected Kaneki Ken’s death, Force of Fate is being redistributed.]

[Force of Fate has been redistributed, current story protagonists: Kira-Ko Fog-Island (1/2), Kamishiro Rize (1/2).]

This was a mass announcement, received by other Contractors too.

The faces of Han Yu and others, who had already retreated, changed, but they quickly returned to normal.

In Reincarnation Paradise, the death of story protagonists is not uncommon, the stronger the fate of the protagonist, the higher the death rate, because their treasure chest drops are a level or two, even three levels higher than their actual strength.

Upon receiving the notification, Su Xiao’s eyebrows twitched. As expected, Kaneki Ken was not a true protagonist. After his death, someone immediately replaced him.

”Team one has been cleared, designated area ghouls expelled.”

”Team two is clearing....”

Reports came in through his earpiece one after another, the opening of public channel permissions only meant one thing, the operation was over, and their side had achieved a great victory.

”We have won.”

Marude Itsuki’s tone was calm, but Su Xiao could hear the suppressed excitement in it.

In the struggle against ghouls, the CCG’s win rate wasn’t high, after all, compared to ghouls, human physical conditions are far inferior.

After Marude Itsuki announced victory, Su Xiao received a task completion notification

[Faction Task: Cover Operation. (Completed)]

Difficulty Level: Lv.4.

Task Brief: Assist the ’Special Countermeasures Class’ in fighting against the Bronze Tree, ensuring a victory for your side.

Task Information: CCG faction task, will not be included in the clearance evaluation.

Task Deadline: Until the end of the operation in the 11th District.

Task Reward: 10,000 Faction Contribution Points.

Failure Penalty: None.

...

Do you wish to complete the task, after completing the task you will receive 10,000 Faction Contribution Points.

Su Xiao chose to complete it, his CCG Contribution Points became: [First-Class Investigator, Contribution Value 17723/10000, Do you wish to promote your position?]

Of course, he chose to promote, as exchanging for that Blue quality potion requires the prerequisite of being a Quasi-Special Investigator.

Based on past experience, he would quickly be promoted to Quasi-Special Investigator, but Su Xiao noticed one thing.

Though he was promoted quickly, he held little actual power.

This was normal, his time in the CCG was too short, and rapid promotion was due to the influence of Reincarnation Paradise.

Su Xiao didn’t care about having actual power, he now only wanted to return to the temporary branch in the 24th District, to exchange for that Blue quality ”Human Gene Enhancement Liquid”.

After a +2 in Power and +4 in Stamina, Su Xiao’s combat strength would increase significantly, and then he would not face the same outcome when fighting the manager again.
