Chapter 81: Chapter 49: Arima, You Scammer

Su Xiao carefully lifted his left foot, avoiding a ghoul’s Heko that swept unconsciously.

The wind blew against Su Xiao’s pant leg, and the tip of the Eyeless Eater Heko slightly touched his pant leg.

”Rip~.”

The pant leg tore open, and Su Xiao frowned. These creatures were very strong, and their Heko was exceptionally sharp.

Su Xiao continued to move forward unassumingly. With his mental endurance, he would remain calm even in more perilous situations.

As Su Xiao moved halfway through, Yuna passed through the dangerous area, weaving through the gaps among the numerous Eyeless Eaters.

Arima Kishou and Yuna stood in front of the opposite passage, their thumbs on the activation button of their Quinque, ready to support Su Xiao at any moment.

From the previous battle, Su Xiao knew that the two were definitely not incompetent teammates, or he wouldn’t be covering the rear.

Yuna crouched low, her long black hair hanging down her shoulders, carefully observing the movements of the Eyeless Eaters for Su Xiao.

Suddenly, Yuna raised one hand and brought her index and middle fingers of the other hand together, pointing at her palm.

The gesture meant ”stop.”

Su Xiao immediately noticed Yuna’s action.

Yuna pointed at the two Eyeless Eaters in front of Su Xiao, who had their backs to him, making it difficult for him to see their movements.

Yuna pointed to the side, indicating that Su Xiao should change his path.

Without much hesitation, Su Xiao chose another route. Now, all three were in the same boat. Judging by the distance at which Arima Kishou and Yuna stood, it was clear that they wouldn’t leave Su Xiao behind.

After a few steps, Su Xiao noticed that the two Eyeless Eaters Yuna pointed out were actually in an awakened state, their heads moving left and right as if they vaguely sensed something.

Su Xiao continued forward, successfully progressing over 180 meters under the cover of Arima Kishou and Yuna, with victory in sight.

”Boom, boom~~.”

A dense sound of footsteps came from behind.

The three’s expressions dramatically changed—those diverted Eyeless Eaters were coming back.

Su Xiao couldn’t afford to hide anymore and quickened his pace under the cover of the running sound.

A few seconds later, Su Xiao successfully crossed the dangerous area, and the three regrouped.

Due to the thunderous footsteps, the ghouls in the clearing all became active.

Yuna made a victory gesture, but at that moment, a ghoul suddenly appeared behind her.

It was a normal ghoul, a woman about thirty years old.

Ghouls suddenly appearing in the 24th District was quite common; the three had encountered such situations several times, but the timing of this ghoul’s appearance left them somewhat helpless.

Su Xiao and the other two immediately locked their gazes on the female ghoul, exuding a killing aura.

”White Death!”

The female ghoul gritted her teeth and said upon seeing Arima Kishou.

Su Xiao sensed trouble and brought out the Dragon Slash, fully prepared to throw it with all his strength.

The female ghoul showed a crazed smile as she spotted the Eyeless Eaters.

She lived in the 24th District, so she recognized these ’beasts’.

”Ah!!!!”

A piercing scream echoed through the passage.

”Splat.”

”Boom.”

Su Xiao’s sword and Arima Kishou’s golden electric ball arrived simultaneously.

The female ghoul was first pierced by the Dragon Slash, then electrocuted into char, falling to the ground, dead.

But it was too late—the scream had alerted the Eyeless Eaters. With those returning from the depths, the number was at least over five hundred.

Pairs of eyes encased in grayish hard shells stared intently at the three.

All sounds around Su Xiao vanished in an instant.

Su Xiao turned his head stiffly, feeling a chill creeping up from his soles, through his spine, to the top of his head as he saw the Eyeless Eaters all standing up.

Facing so many Eyeless Eaters was guaranteed to be a dead end!

”Roar~!...”

The roars merged into one, and the Eyeless Eaters sped toward the three on all fours.

Prior to this, the three had already begun sprinting forward desperately. As they passed the female ghoul’s corpse, Su Xiao grabbed the hilt of the Dragon Slash single-handedly.

”Boom, boom...”

A large cloud of dust rose behind them as the Eyeless Eaters rushed toward the three on all fours, like wild beasts.

The speed of these Eyeless Eaters was astonishing; they ran on all fours, using their Tail Heko for balance.

Even in battle, ordinary ghouls walked upright, but these Eyeless Eaters were complete beasts, with their Tail Heko perfectly replacing a tail.

Su Xiao and the others were no longer paying attention to what was behind them, running wildly forward for their lives.

Su Xiao’s agility attribute was at 13 points, already fast, yet even so, those Eyeless Eaters were slowly closing in on them.

”This won’t work; we’ll be caught sooner or later.”

Even at a high speed, Arima Kishou was remarkably calm.

After passing through a straight passage, two forks appeared ahead.

”Bai Ye, you left, I right. You take Yuna first; I’ll cover the rear.”

Previously, Su Xiao was covering the rear, and now Arima Kishou took the initiative to do it.

”I hope you live.”

Su Xiao nodded at Arima Kishou; he wasn’t one to waver.

Arima Kishou’s steps came to a halt, stopping at one of the forks.

Su Xiao and Yuna charged directly into the other fork. Before entering, Yuna shouted.

”Arima, survive no matter what.”

After shouting, Yuna rushed into the fork.

”Boom.”

A crash sounded from behind, and Su Xiao turned to see the entrance securely sealed.

It was Arima Kishou’s Quinque ’IXA’, a Quinque that could change forms at will.

”Bang, bang...”

Repeated crashes echoed, presumably from Eyeless Eaters hitting the wall formed by ’IXA’.

’IXA’ was indeed sturdy but couldn’t withstand such an assault for long.

After Su Xiao had run a bit further, there was a rumbling sound from behind as the wall formed by ’IXA’ was breached.

About fifty or sixty Eyeless Eaters rushed into the passage, ferociously chasing the two.

Su Xiao ignored the Eyeless Eaters and continued advancing.

After running for several minutes, Su Xiao abruptly stopped, causing Yuna to bump into his back.

”Why~are~we~stopping?”

Yuna was breathless; the previous battle plus the current desperate flight was anything but easy.

If their speed were recorded, the two would have utterly smashed world sprint records.

”If we keep running, we’ll lose stamina and won’t outrun these beasts.”

Su Xiao stood with his sword at the ready as those dozens of Eyeless Eaters rapidly closed in.

”I’ll cover you~, use this Quinque first.”

Yuna tossed a Quinque to Su Xiao, who pondered briefly before pressing the button on the Quinque.

This was his first time using a Quinque.

”Click~.”

The silver-white metal box popped open, and the Quinque inside began to expand rapidly, clinging to his upper body upon contact with the air.

This was not a weapon-type Quinque but an armor-type Quinque, something Su Xiao had seen before.

In the original work, Yukinori Shinohara used this type of armor Quinque, known as ’Xin’, recently developed by the CCG.

The dark cyan Quinque armor enveloped Su Xiao’s upper body. The armor was somewhat heavy, but its defensive power was substantial.

After Su Xiao put on the ’Xin’, Reincarnation Paradise provided a prompt.

[You have equipped the Quinque ’Xin’, Strength +3, Agility -3, Defensive Power +2, Moving Speed reduced by 30%. (Temporary state, gain or reduction status will disappear after removing ’Xin’.)]

This Quinque ’Xin’ enhanced Su Xiao’s positional warfare capability by at least double when paired with his Sword Technique.
