Chapter 69: Chapter 37: Human Forbidden Zone

Seeing the achievement task: (Cleaner), Su Xiao was quite surprised.

This is truly an unexpected delight. Whether it’s 1 attribute point or 7% of the World Source, it’s a very good reward.

In fact, completing this achievement task offers more generous rewards than his main storyline task.

Lighting a cigarette, the thin smoke rose up.

The conditions needed for the main storyline task (2) have now been met, and he doesn’t need to expel any more ghouls.

Although killing ghouls is a cruel thing, Su Xiao has his own purposes and will use any means to achieve them.

There are still 12 days left before the ultimate deadline given by the main storyline task (2), plenty of time.

”First-Class Bai Ye, what do we do next?”

Maniwa Haruo, who had been following Su Xiao in expelling ghouls these days, was also very tired.

”Return to the branch.”

...

The CCG convoy quickly returned to the branch. As soon as Su Xiao stepped in, he saw Yukinori Shinohara and Shuuzou Suzuya approaching him.

”First-Class Bai Ye, did you finish today’s expulsion?”

Su Xiao was well-known in the 14th Ward Subdivision, or rather, the entire CCG had heard of his name by now.

In just eight days, nearly the entire 14th District was cleaned up, a feat perhaps only ’that person’ could accomplish.

Not just within the CCG, even among ghouls, more or less, they’d heard of his name.

Some ghouls would call him Bai Ye, while others called him Black Death God, because Su Xiao’s black hair and eyes, along with his nature of leaving no survivors, led to the Black Death God moniker.

Among the ghouls, almost all S-level and above ghouls had heard of Su Xiao, and even those who hadn’t must have heard of the ’Black Death God of the 14th District’.

”It’s done; I’ve basically cleaned out the ghouls in the 14th District.”

Yukinori Shinohara smiled. This Special Investigator wasn’t greedy for achievements but was happy about another safe living space for humans.

”On behalf of all the humans in the 14th District, thank you, First-Class Bai Ye!”

Su Xiao was taken aback; Yukinori Shinohara actually knew about his promotion to First-Class Investigator.

”No need to be surprised; the news from headquarters will arrive soon. I am heading to the 20th District today to rendezvous with others; the situation in the 11th District is even more serious. The Bronze Tree has taken over the 11th District’s branch, and it has now become a ghoul territory.”

Hearing Yukinori Shinohara’s words, Su Xiao frowned.

The 11th District’s CCG subdivision was overrun already? How could it be so fast? If it weren’t for possible involvement of Contractors, Su Xiao wouldn’t believe it at all.

”It looks like a direct war with the Bronze Tree isn’t far off. Can you tell me the specific time?”

Su Xiao wanted to inquire about the CCG’s timeline for battle against the Bronze Tree, which would greatly benefit his plans.

”It’s not clear at this point, just that we’re going to the 20th District to form the ’Special Countermeasures Class’.

But Bai Ye, you also have to go with me this time.”

Su Xiao looked at Yukinori Shinohara in confusion, wondering if he was also a member of the ’Special Countermeasures Class’?

”Although you’re also going to the 20th District, you’re not joining the ’Special Countermeasures Class’. The higher-ups have assigned you a more important task, of course, it’s also extremely dangerous.”

Su Xiao became interested.

”What task?”

”Whack-A-Mole!”

Su Xiao was petrified.

”Whack-A-Mole?”

Yukinori Shinohara looked at Su Xiao amusingly, as if it were strange for Su Xiao to not know what ’Whack-A-Mole’ meant.

”Have you heard of the 24th District?”

Yukinori Shinohara’s expression turned serious.

Su Xiao had certainly heard of the 24th District. If Zones 1 to 4 were the dangerous areas filled with ghouls, then the 24th District was the Human Forbidden Zone.

A saying was common within the CCG: Quasi-Special Investigators don’t even qualify to enter the 24th District alone.

The 24th District wasn’t a specific area; it consisted of tunnels dug by ghouls throughout Tokyo’s underground.

These tunnels were labyrinthine, and the 24th District couldn’t be fully explored till now. Most ghoul investigators only dared to venture near its perimeter.

Within the CCG, only one squad dared to delve deep into the 24th District, known as the Zero Squad, led by Arima Kishou, the strongest investigator in CCG history, called the undefeated investigator.

Now, CCG Headquarters’ orders were for Su Xiao to go to the 24th District for ’Whack-A-Mole’.

The danger level of the 24th District could be summarized in a simple phrase.

That is, if Level A ghouls roam everywhere, S-level ghouls are as numerous as dogs, and only SS-level ghouls can barely make a stir.

However, this ’stir’ carries great risk, and they could be taken out at any moment.

Yes, that’s the 24th District, the Human Forbidden Zone.

Shared eating is considered natural there, as ghouls find it difficult to have access to human meat, given the absence of humans.

According to information obtained by the Zero Squad, the depths of the 24th District, essentially Tokyo’s underground deep zone, could potentially contain thousands, if not more ghouls.

”Interesting. Is it about ’Whack-A-Mole’ on the outskirts or deeper inside?”

Su Xiao’s question surprised Yukinori Shinohara; most people would feel inevitable fear when assigned to the 24th District.

”It’s with Arima’s squad, and with your strength, you’re certainly going deep for ’Whack-A-Mole’.”

Understanding the general situation, Su Xiao bid farewell to Yukinori Shinohara, who was heading to the 20th District.

His transfer orders hadn’t arrived yet, but he too would head to the 20th District later on to rendezvous with someone.

Later in the afternoon, Su Xiao received transfer orders from CCG Headquarters with new credentials.

[Promoted to First-Class Investigator, CCG Contribution Value 2053/10000.]

Being a First-Class Investigator wasn’t the end; above First-Class were Quasi-Special and Special Investigators.

However, the main storyline task (2) only required him to become a First-Class Investigator.

Su Xiao opened the task options.

[Main Storyline Task (2): First-Class Investigator. (Achieved)]

Task Difficulty: LV.3.

Task Summary: Quickly rise in rank within the CCG to prepare for subsequent tasks.

Task Information: Use any means to elevate status – eliminate ghouls, bribery, and so forth.

Task Rewards: 1 attribute point, 1500 Paradise coins.

Task Remaining Time: 12 days, 16 hours.

....

Su Xiao could complete the task at any time now, but just as he prepared to finish Main Storyline Task (2), he suddenly thought of something.

If he completed the task now, what would happen to the remaining 12 days and 13 hours?

Remember, the longer you stay in the Derivative World, the more opportunities for benefits you obtain.

The resources Su Xiao needed to become stronger were acquired within the Derivative World; once returned to Reincarnation Paradise, he had no way to access resources.

After consulting with Reincarnation Paradise, Su Xiao found that if he finished the main task now, the remaining time to stay would be cleared.

Su Xiao pondered for a moment and decided not to complete the main task for now.

Currently, within the CCG Camp, it’s just him. If he doesn’t complete Main Storyline Task (2), it won’t matter much if Contractors from the Ghoul Camp finish their Main Storyline Task (2).

Judging from the shape of the main tasks now, Main Storyline Task (3) is highly likely to be a confrontational task. If he doesn’t complete Main Storyline Task (2), Contractors from the Ghoul Camp can only wait.

He could complete tasks anywhere, anytime, which is a huge advantage.

Without reaching the time limit, Main Storyline Task (2) for Su Xiao will not fail, meaning he gained an additional 12 days of free action.

Currently, CCG Headquarters ordered him to go to the 24th District with Arima Kishou for ’Whack-A-Mole’, which is undoubtedly an opportunity to gain some benefits.

The more ghouls there are, the higher the chance of treasure chests dropping.

Su Xiao’s luck with treasure chests has been bad indeed, but he doesn’t believe that ghouls will continuously not drop chests.
