My Infinite System.

Lucian did not take the long road.

He took one step off the edge of the younger void, and forced distance to be meaningless. Infinity handled the rest. Routes, gates, layered prohibitions, and all the careful architecture designed to keep lesser things out of older ground folded away from him like they had been built to meaning.

When his foot landed again, the world had been reshuffled in rank.

The Primordial Expanse did not greeter itself with skies and soils, in any honest sense. It was a region of first principles, laid bare. Vast shelves of living law, and drifting continents of compressed origin-fire. Black rivers that ran without water and remembered every name ever spoken over them. In the far distance, structures rose like thoughts too large to be held by bodies: thrones without seats, towers without doors, plains where cause and command still walked openly. All of it felt older than conflict and still engineered for it.

Lucian exhaled once, and steadied.

This was the place Cael had come from. The place that had waited through three hundred and seventy-two cycles of absence with a seat left untouched. It didn’t feel welcoming. It felt exact.

Cael appeared to his left as some sort of hard-edged projection, denser than the hologram form he had taken on the field, less like a system ghost and more like a man-shaped continuity forced into visibility.

”You chose the direct route,” Cael said.

”I was done walking.”

”Good. Walking would have gotten you killed by scenery.” Cael looked out over the Expanse with an expression that was almost homesickness and failed. ”From here on infinities stop being dangerous in ways you recognize.”

Lucian scanned the nearest layers of the region. There was presence out there, some open, some veiled, some so large it was more climate. ”Explain.”

”Your flare wasn’t subtle,” Cael said. ”You unbound infinity in the younger strata and tore through opposition that should have taken councils, hosts, and decades. That kind of signal doesn’t only wake hunters.” It woke appraisers. Claimants. Old rivals. Debt-holders. And worse than all of them, it woke the polite ones.

”The Lords.”

Cael’s mouth twitched. ”Especially the Lords.”

They stood on a ridge of dark mineral overlooking a gulf covered in slow lightning. Each bolt left writing etched into the air that faded before Lucian could fully read it. Far across the gulf, a procession of veiled figures moved along a bridge that only existed when they stepped on it.

”My enemies are numerous.” Cael continued. ”Some hated me before I vanished. Some only learned to hate me after my absence made room for their ambition. The Fractured Choir will want your power dissected. The Pale Inheritance will want your existence turned into a precedent. There are lesser courts who will try to bind you as a recovered asset of my house, and greater ones who will argue you are an unauthorized continuation and should be erased before becoming doctrine.”

Lucian listened, without interrupting.

Cael glanced at him. ”You’re not only my vessel, or my successor, or my mistake. In this place those words become legal states. If the wrong mouth successfully names you, half the Expanse will act as though the name had always been true.”

”And the Lords?” Lucian asked.

”Are not your allies by default.” Cael’s voice hardened. ”Don’t romanticize rank. We were never a family in the soft sense. We were a construct. Direction over administration. Will over maintenance. When I was present that structure held one shape. With me gone, it held another by force of habit and fear. Now, with my infinity again moving through you, each Lord still sitting will ask the same question: does this restore the balance, or does this threaten the balance they built in my absence?”

Lucian’s eye traced a distant column of fire that had no fuel and no smoke. ”You’re telling me not to trust them.”

”I’m telling you to trust their interests, nothing else.” Cael folded his hands behind his back. ”Some will smile. Some will offer guidance. Some will call you necessary. Listen if you must. Don’t kneel. Don’t swear. Don’t accept a seat, a title, or a protection pact without assuming it comes with a collar.”

There was a low resonance underneath the ridge, as if something immense had noticed the foreign weight on old ground. Lucian felt attention brush him and slide off, not yet committed.

”They already know I’m here,” he said.

”They knew when you arrived.” Cael replied. ”Arrival in the Expanse without invitation is a declaration in itself. You didn’t come as a petitioner. You came as unbound infinity wearing a man. That will offend as many as it impresses.”

Lucian began to descend the ridge. Whatever roads the Expanse had, it did not provide. Each step required choice, and which parts counted as solid. He learned fast. Infinity helped, but he had not yet learned how to use that place. This one didn’t yield to power alone. It required orientation. Claim. Continuity of self under pressure from older definitions of existing.

Cael matched his stride.

”There are three immediate dangers.” Cael began. ”First, Authority detachments already deployed into the younger layers may reverse-trace your entry and follow. They’re beneath Lord rank, but they’re disciplined and numerous. Second, rival primordial houses will send speakers and killers before they send answers. Third, the Lords themselves may test you through intermediaries so that any resulting disaster is deniable.”

”And you?” Lucian asked. ”Where do you sit in that list?”

Cael was silent for a few steps. ”I sit in the reason you can enter this place at all. That doesn’t make me safe. It makes me responsible. If I push you in the wrong way, I may finish what my absence began.”

Lucian accepted that. ”Then guide. Don’t sanctify.”I wasn’t planning to.”

They crossed a stretch of ground where shadows fell upwards. In the distance, a city of white blades turned slowly, each engraved with laws that hurt to look at for too long. Closer, a market of mute beings traded bottled moments and sealed permissions under banners that were rewriting themselves every minute. The Expanse didn’t have empty wilderness. It had civilizations at a depth that made ordinary empires look like local habits.

A figure on the distant platform stopped and watched Lucian pass. Another did the same from a floating stair. Neither intervened. First measure. Then violence, if measurement failed.

Cael noticed Lucian noticing. ”You will be observed constantly. Assume every courtesy is a probe. Assume every challenge is a negotiation with witnesses.”I’ve had worse welcomes.”No,” Cael said. ”You have had louder ones. Not worse.”

They reached a broad plateau where the air became denser with rank pressure. Lucian felt his own infinity answer automatically to it, refusing compression. The plateau accepted him after a moment, as if reluctantly updating a record.

Cael stopped there and looked at him fully.

”This is where your next journey begins,” he said. ”Not as a man searching for missing family among younger ruins. As an unbound phenomenon carrying a Lord’s signature into a realm of deep memory of what that signature used to mean. Your enemies are numerous. The Authorities will want control. The rival houses will want leverage. The Lords will want a determination. Some will want you elevated. Some want you archived. Only a few want you gone before you can become a center.”

Lucian met his gaze. ”And what do you want?”

Cael’s response had no adornment. ”I want you to survive long enough to choose what infinity becomes in your hands. Not what they decide it must be.”

Another pulse of distant attention passed over the plateau. Stronger. More deliberate.

Lucian turned to it.

”Then we start,” he said.

Cael’s projection flickered once, steadying. ”Stay sharp. From here on out, every step is politics, or war, or both.”

Lucian walked into the Primordial Expanse with open eyes, with unsealed infinity, and with a warning from an absent Lord still echoing.

The older world opened around him like a gate waiting for the wrong name to come home.
