My Infinite System.

Marc’s hands were numb from the wrists, and he kept them there.

Reality on the right half of the rise maintained the shape he’d forced into place, continuities reduced and escape routes narrowed, with Outer God tricks taking longer to become what they wanted to be. Every second of holding this shape felt like trying to haul a mountain by the teeth, and the blood ran from his nose in a steady stream. His vision pulsed at the edges, and somewhere deep in his eyes a hot wire of pain was always tightening.

He held.

”Still up,” he rasped, mostly to himself, ”still up.”

Around him Team Zero was using every inch he’d bought.

Lucy’s hellflame slashed through a manifestation that could no longer simply rewrite its own burning away, and the fire took it in layers. Vyn seized the cleaner local laws and drove them in like wedges into hostile pressure, carving brief corridors of workable magic. Reia flooded the disrupted enemy net with cascading errors until specialists fired on their own support constructs. Silas, battered and grinning through red teeth, smashed anything that came near the left crest. Evelyn kept her line with hard, efficient violence, never looking to Lucian for anything beyond battlefield geometry.

Lucian was in the center with Lirael.

Their clash was continuous, a brutal back-and-forth of containment light and raw force leaving the stone under them fractured and smoking. He was still the most dangerous thing on the rise, and also still capped, fighting within a limit Marc could feel through the haze. Every time Lucian’s power surged it hit an invisible ceiling and rolled back down into merely devastating rather than final.

Marc spat blood and pushed the rewrite harder as an Outer God form tried to shoulder through his enforced constants.

”No,” he growled, ”you don’t get to ignore me.”

The constants held, barely, and the manifestation screamed as continuity was forced onto it long enough for Lucy to burn a tunnel through its core. The victory cost Marc another lurch toward black out, his left knee hitting the stone as he kept one hand planted and one hand raised, will pouring out in raw structural commands.

Lirael felt the strain in the field and tried to exploit it.

She disengaged from Lucian for a fraction and sent a pale light lancing toward one of Marc’s primary anchors in the rewrite, but Lucian caught her before the strike fully formed and drove her back into the center with a shoulder check that cracked air. The two of them went down the slope a few steps in a snarl of force and erasure commands before Lucian stopped the retreat and shoved her upward again.

”Focus,” Lucian snapped across the fight.

”I am focusing,” Marc forced out, ”you’re the one still fighting like you’ve got a leash on.”

An Outer God pressure front rolled over the lower rise and punched three separate holes in Marc’s structure at once. Reality stuttered, and for a sick instant the enforced constants flickered and a construct phasing through the right flank nearly reached Vyn. She snarled, snapped a dead zone around it, and Marc slammed the rewrite closed again with a sound that existed more in the bones than the air.

His ears rang, and he was pretty sure something in his left eye had burst. The world on that side looked red and wrong.

Silas shouted something from the left, warning or encouragement, hard to tell. Reia’s telepathic presence brushed Marc once, tight with concern, then snapped away to cripple another command chain. Lucy planted herself near the interior and turned a whole section of the slope into a furnace. Evelyn killed a specialist who got too close to Marc’s exposed side and moved on without a word.

The rewrite began to slip in earnest.

Not all at once. In ugly patches. An Outer God form forced a local continuity break and kept it open with sheer mass of presence. Another manifestation adapted, learning the edges of Marc’s authority and pressing exactly there. Lirael’s remaining specialists shifted their formulas to work around the failing zones instead of through them.

Marc’s breath came in ragged pulls. ”I’m losing it.”

Lucian heard him. Everyone near the center did. There was no clean answer left in the geometry, no fresh angle that did not require something more than what Team Zero was already spending.

Marc tried to tighten the rewrite one last time and felt it tear along the right edge like wet cloth.

”Lucian-”

A new voice cut across the crest, calm and close enough that several of them flinched.

”Enough.”

Cael stood at the fractured interior line as if he’d been there for some time, and they’d only just noticed. No dramatic arrival. No flare. Just presence, steady eyed and unmoved by Outer God pressure that made the stone groan. He looked at Lucian first, then at the failing battlefield, then back at Lucian again.

”You’re still holding back,” Cael said.

Lucian’s jaw tightened as he met another of Lirael’s strikes. ”This isn’t the time.”

”It is the only time.” Cael’s tone didn’t rise. Didn’t need to. ”Stop rationing it. Show them the power of infinity. If we draw attention, we deal with it after.”

Marc stared, half-conscious and still trying to keep a corner of reality nailed down. ”Who the hell-”

”Later,” Cael said, not unkindly, not looking away from Lucian. ”Right now he stops pretending the ceiling is a law.”

Lirael’s attention snapped toward the new voice, pale light flaring. The Outer God pressure thickened hard in response, as if something vast had just registered a familiar and unwelcome variable. Manifestations along the lower slope grew agitated, and less measured.

Lucian stood in the center of it with blood on his temple and that same locked restraint still sitting behind his power.

Marc forced a broken laugh through the blood in his mouth. ”He’s right. Whatever ’can’t’ was supposed to mean, we’re past it.”

Cael took one step closer to Lucian, eyes hard.

”No more holding back,” he said, ”show them. Now.”

The rise shook under another Outer God surge. Lirael gathered light along both arms. Lucy’s fire roared. Vyn shouted as a section of law collapsed. Evelyn cut down another specialist and finally looked full toward the center, anger and alarm tangled together.

Lucian faced Cael for a fraction of a second across the chaos.

The limit he had refused to cross all fight sat there between them, visible to anyone with sense enough to feel power.

Cael did not blink.

”Show them the power of infinity,” he repeated. ”We’ll deal with the consequences after.”

Lucian’s hands curled at his sides.

The battle did not pause for the decision.

It simply leaned harder into the crest, waiting to see whether the fixed point at the center finally stopped holding himself in check.
