My Infinite System.

Finn took the first step onto the stairs, and the tower answered with silence.

The ascent was wrong from the beginning. Each riser felt alive—stone that breathed, faintly warm, pulsing like a vein beneath skin. Grey light seeped from the walls in slow, irregular heartbeats, casting shadows that lingered too long and moved when they shouldn’t. Mira’s staff emitted a constant low hum, vibrating against her palm. Dorian kept a small, controlled flame dancing between his fingers, the light pushing back against the gloom.

”Stay in formation,” Finn said quietly. ”Don’t trust what you see.”

They had climbed fewer than thirty steps when the first entity emerged.

It peeled itself from the wall—not a shadow, but something denser. A construct of liquid forgetting, translucent and shifting, like ink dropped into still water. No face. No limbs at first. Just a flowing mass that condensed into jagged, blade-like protrusions. It lunged without sound.

Finn met it head-on. His fist, backed by raw physical force and a thread of earth affinity, slammed into its center. The creature splattered, droplets scattering across the steps—only to reform instantly, now split into three smaller versions. Each one moved faster than the last.

Mira spun her staff in a wide arc. Spirit energy flared outward in a violet ring. ”They’re not solid! They’re anchored to the tower—cut the connection!”

Silver threads shot from her staff, invisible to normal eyes but blazing to her perception. She lashed them around the three entities, binding the flowing mass to the stairwell itself. The constructs thrashed, trying to pull free. Dorian followed with a focused jet of superheated air, flash-boiling the liquid core. Steam exploded outward, and the things dissolved into harmless mist.

They kept climbing.

The tower fought smarter the higher they went.

On the next landing, the walls sprouted dozens of the liquid entities at once. These ones had learned. They flowed across the ceiling, dripping down like living stalactites, forming barbed whips that cracked through the air. One caught Dorian across the shoulder, slicing through cloth and skin. He hissed, fire roaring up his arm to cauterize the wound even as he retaliated with a swirling vortex of flame and wind that incinerated three of the creatures mid-fall.

Finn blurred forward, space folding in short, violent bursts. He appeared above a cluster, drove a downward strike reinforced with earth and fire. The impact cratered the steps. Liquid exploded outward, but the tower drank it back in, reforming the entities stronger, their forms now edged with crystalline spikes.

Mira planted her staff. ”They’re feeding on the structure! I can see the threads—hundreds of them!”

She thrust outward. Spirit perception expanded in a dome. Thousands of faint silver lines became visible—connections binding the liquid horrors to the tower’s own memory. Mira severed them in sweeping cuts. Each broken thread caused an entity to collapse, screaming in frequencies that made the air ripple.

But more kept coming.

The stairs narrowed, forcing them single file. The entities adapted again—becoming thinner, faster, sliding through cracks in the stone to strike from behind. One grazed Finn’s side, a cold burn that made him momentarily forget the next step. He stumbled. Dorian caught his arm, pulling him forward while unleashing a wall of fire that scorched the entire stairwell behind them.

”Keep moving!” Dorian growled. ”They’re trying to wear us down.”

They pushed higher.

The tower grew crueler.

Halfway up, a new variant appeared. These were not liquid anymore. They were voids—perfect spheres of absolute absence that drifted down the stairs like dark lanterns. Where they passed, sound died. Color drained. Memories flickered and threatened to slip away.

Mira staggered as one brushed past her. For a heartbeat, she forgot her own name. Her staff clattered against the steps. Finn grabbed it, pressed it back into her hands.

”Hold on,” he said. ”Feel the threads. They’re still there.”

Mira nodded, teeth clenched. She reached deeper. Spirit affinity surged. The voids recoiled as she wove counter-threads—anchors of identity and purpose. One void shattered like glass when her perception pierced its center. The others fled upward, regrouping.

Dorian’s flames were smaller now, his breathing labored. ”How many more floors?”

”Too many,” Finn answered.

They climbed anyway.

The final stretch before the upper levels became a gauntlet.

The liquid entities returned in force, now hybridized with the voids—dark, flowing masses that erased whatever they touched. One wrapped around Dorian’s leg. The skin there went numb, memories of his father’s voice fading for precious seconds. He burned it off with a desperate burst, the pain clearing his head.

Mira fought like a storm of silver light. Her staff became an extension of her will, threads lashing out in intricate patterns that bound, severed, and unraveled. But the effort drained her. Blood trickled from her nose.

Finn was a force of nature. Clones split from him—four, then six—each wielding different affinities in perfect coordination. One clone anchored with earth, another struck with fire and air, a third folded space to redirect attacks. The real Finn moved at the center, a blur of calculated violence. A void-entity tried to engulf him. He punched straight through its core, space and time twisting around his fist until the thing imploded.

Still they climbed.

The stairwell shook. The grey light flared violently. The tower was throwing everything it had left at them.

A massive construct formed ahead—taller than any before, its body a swirling amalgamation of liquid forgetting and void. Dozens of barbed tendrils whipped forward. Its ”face” was a swirling maw that promised complete erasure.

Finn met it first. ”Together!”

Mira bound its core threads. Dorian unleashed a spiraling inferno. Finn charged through the flames, clones flanking him, and drove a fully reinforced strike—earth, fire, space, time—directly into the creature’s center.

The impact rang like a bell.

The construct shrieked, a sound that scraped the inside of their skulls. Tendrils lashed wildly. One caught Finn across the ribs, a deep gash opening. Another nearly engulfed Mira before Dorian pulled her clear.

But the creature broke.

It collapsed into harmless mist and shadow, the stairwell falling silent for the first time in what felt like hours.

Light—real, golden light—spilled from above.

They were close.

Finn leaned against the wall, breathing hard, blood dripping down his side. Mira wiped blood from her nose, staff trembling in her grip. Dorian clutched his burned arm, flames flickering weakly.

”We’re not done,” Finn said, pushing off the wall. ”But we’re close enough to taste it.”

Mira nodded. ”Whatever’s at the top... it knows we’re coming.”

Dorian forced a grin. ”Good. Let it.”
