My Infinite System.

Lucian walked north because there was nothing left to wait for.

The capital fell behind him in quiet stages. First the outer walls, then the scattered farms, then the open plains where the wind carried the faint metallic scent of unstable magic. He didn’t run. He didn’t need to. The ground seemed to shorten itself beneath his feet, carrying him forward at the exact pace his body remembered from years of long marches and longer regrets. His hands stayed loose at his sides. His breathing stayed even. The night air felt cool against his skin, carrying the distant smell of rain that would never quite reach the rift.

He thought about the garden. About the bench where he had sat for months, chasing echoes that always slipped away. About Lucy’s tired smile when she finally believed he wouldn’t disappear again. About Althea’s careful way of watching everyone, still learning what family meant. About Alistair, who had spent a lifetime breaking things and was now trying, in his clumsy way, to hold them together.

He thought about Evelyn.

The memory wasn’t dramatic. Just her voice in the old days, teasing him about burning dinner again. The way she used to look at him when she thought he wasn’t paying attention. The promise he had made, over and over, that he would find her.

The rift appeared on the horizon like a wound that refused to close. Veridian soldiers had cleared a wide circle around it. They saw him coming and stepped aside without a word. Some bowed. Others simply stared, the kind of stare people give to storms they know they cannot stop.

Lucian didn’t acknowledge them. He walked straight to the edge of the crater and looked down into the tear.

The unstable energies swirled and pulsed. Shadows moved inside it, patient and hungry. The air tasted of ozone and forgotten things.

He stepped in.

The grey swallowed him whole.

It pressed against him immediately, trying to crush, to erase, to pull him apart into nothing. Lucian kept walking. The pressure broke against him like waves against rock. He felt the dimension’s confusion, its hesitation. It had been built to contain anomalies, not to face the one who refused to be contained.

The first guardians rose from the grey floor. Tall, faceless things of liquid crystal and void. They moved with eerie coordination, tendrils whipping forward like living spears.

Lucian raised one hand.

Not dramatically. Just enough.

The nearest guardian froze mid-strike. Then it unraveled, threads of its existence coming apart like old rope. The others attacked faster. Lucian stepped through them. One tendril grazed his shoulder, drawing a thin line of blood. He didn’t flinch. He simply reached out, found the connection anchoring the creature to the dimension, and pulled.

The guardian dissolved into harmless mist.

More came. Dozens. Then hundreds. The grey filled with them, a tide of liquid horror and void maws. Lucian walked through the storm. His movements were economical, almost gentle. A palm strike here. A twist of space there. A quiet pulse of power that made the fabric of the dimension tear and reform around him. He left a trail of dissolving guardians behind him, the grey cracking in his wake like ice under too much weight.

The Warden appeared ahead of him, her ethereal form shimmering between realities. Those vast starlit eyes narrowed.

”You came,” she said. Her voice carried the weight of erased worlds. ”Alone.”

Lucian stopped. The distance between them felt both infinite and nonexistent.

”Where are they?” he asked. Simple. Quiet.

The Warden smiled that small, elegant smile. ”Confined. Safe. For now. You should have stayed away, Lucian. This fracture you created—it ends here.”

She raised her hand.

The pressure returned, heavier than before. The entire dimension seemed to lean in, trying to crush him into nothing. The grey tightened like chains. Shadows poured from every direction, hungry for his existence.

Lucian breathed out slowly.

Then he stepped forward.

The pressure shattered.

Not with a roar or explosion. Just a quiet, inevitable breaking. The grey around him fractured in clean lines, like glass hit with a hammer. The shadows dissolved before they could touch him. The Warden’s eyes widened, just a fraction.

”You don’t understand what you’re—”

Lucian moved.

He didn’t charge. He simply closed the distance in one unhurried step, space folding around him. His hand rose. Not to strike, but to touch. He pressed his palm against the air between them and pulled.

The Warden gasped. Her form flickered violently. For a moment, the ancient indifference cracked, revealing something almost human underneath—surprise, maybe even fear.

She retaliated.

The dimension convulsed. Chains of pure erasure erupted from the grey, wrapping around Lucian’s arms and torso. They burned where they touched, trying to pull him apart thread by thread. The Warden poured her power into them, ancient and vast, the weight of countless erased realities pressing down.

Lucian stood there, chained, and looked at her.

Then he broke them.

Not by force. By refusal. The chains simply stopped existing where they touched him. The dimension screamed. The Warden staggered back, her ethereal form rippling like water disturbed by a stone.

”You cannot win this,” she said. Her voice had lost some of its calm. ”The Aethel will not allow it.”

Lucian took another step. ”I’m not here to win.”

He reached out again. This time the pull was stronger. The grey around the Warden fractured more deeply. She tried to retreat, to fade, but Lucian held the connection. For a moment, their powers clashed—Infinite against Erasure, anomaly against order. The dimension shook violently. Cracks spread across the nothing like lightning.

The Warden tore herself free with a sharp, pained sound. Her form flickered and stabilized, but she looked diminished.

”He will tear the world apart for them,” she whispered, almost to herself. ”I wonder if they’re worth it.”

Then she vanished.

Lucian stood alone in the fracturing grey. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. His shoulder burned where the guardian had cut him earlier. He wiped it away with the back of his hand and kept walking.

The chamber waited ahead.

He could feel them now. The kids. Evelyn. The chains trying to hold them.

His steps didn’t quicken. They didn’t need to.

The grey cracked wider with every step he took.

Somewhere in the distance, a door waited.

Lucian walked toward it.
