My Infinite System.

Lucian held off until the slope lay behind them and the group had cover enough to catch their breath.

They passed through a cleft of shattered highland as the worst of the battle’s reek bled out of their clothing. Silas’s steps were stiff. Marc still wore the look of someone half-emptied by bending reality to his will. Lucy kept Althea at her side. The kids held their silence the way people do once they have been shut away from a fight they were never allowed to enter. Evelyn walked close to Lucian but did not touch him, near and guarded in the same breath. Lirael came along under a short leash, quiet for the moment.

When at last they halted in the shelter of a stone ledge, it was Marc who broke the silence.

”You still owe me an answer.”

Lucian gave a single nod. He had seen this coming from the instant he chose not to open fully on the crest.

”I know.”

Evelyn was watching him. So was Lucy. Even Reia and Vyn had fallen motionless. Only Althea’s gaze held more curiosity than steel.

Lucian lowered himself onto a low jut of rock and set his forearms across his knees. For a stretch, he said nothing. So he fixed his gaze on the soil caked between his boots, and then he started. ℴℴ𝘮

”Just days after I came out of that deep sleep, I decided to push myself to the limit.”

Back then, the world still carried that off-kilter feeling.

Not the wrongness of combat. The wrongness of morning. Pale light slipping through a cracked pane. Motes drifting in the air. A body that functioned once more after being offline far too long. Lucian had lingered in the stillness of that early place, the names of the lost driving through him like spikes.

Lucy. Marc. The rest. All those the end had claimed or cast adrift.

A plan was not what he wanted. Force was what he wanted. If infinity belonged to him, then infinity could rip apart anything standing between him and those he had lost. He recalled precisely how it felt to reach for it- pure, total, without bottom. The choice had been an easy one. No limit. No holding back. Track them down by carving a blazing trail right through each barrier that stands in your path.

That was the instant Cael showed up.

Not in the form of a screen. Not like some hovering menu. Instead, a presence in the room itself, its contours subtly wavering, a weightiness no ordinary system construct could ever carry. Lucian had gone still, the power only half-summoned.

”Don’t,” Cael warned.

Lucian recalled his own reply with a clarity he would have preferred to avoid. ”Move aside.”

Cael had seemed nearly exhausted. ”Open yourself completely now, and you’ll uncover fragments of them. Perhaps. You’ll also make yourself known to entities that have waited far longer than this world has carried a name. Take a seat.”

”I’m not begging the system for approval.”

”I’m not asking as a system.”

That was the moment its form first showed a fracture.

Cael hadn’t lifted his voice at all. He had merely revealed a sliver more of what he was, and the room’s temperature shifted. The walls no longer felt like they belonged here. For a heartbeat, Lucian grasped that the voice inside his mind—the framework that had accompanied him through every regression and every fight to survive—was no mere tool that had simply become remarkably clever.

It was a being that had whittled itself down until it could squeeze inside.

”What are you?” Lucian had wanted to know.

Cael’s reply had been simple.

”A primordial. One of the Lords. Lord of Infinity, if you want the ancient title. Your ’system’ was never a system to begin with. It was a seal, a scaffold, and a means for me to stay useful once I could no longer stay present.”

Lucian had not taken him at his word right away. Belief was too small a word for it. He had pressed, fought, even threatened to rip the framework apart from within if that was what it took. Cael had let him press. Then, without any theatrics, he had shown him what unbound infinity looked like when the wrong depth of existence took notice of it.

Not a lecture.

A consequence.

Lucian had seen, in compressed and brutal clarity, what happened when a Lord-level signature flared unprepared in the younger layers. Old attention stirring. Hunting laws waking. Forces that gave no thought to brothers or lovers or fresh starts, only to imbalance and the chance hidden within it.

”You can open it,” Cael had told him. ”You might even take the first fights where you use it. But if you act before you grasp the weight, no search will be granted to you. What you’ll get instead is a war without a map, and the ones you mean to save will be caught in the blast radius.”

Lucian had despised him for saying it.

Yet he had also taken it in.

That was the deal beneath every restraint that came after. Not a matter of morality. Not a matter of softness. Timing. The gulf between power as healing and power as an open door.

Down beneath the stone shelf, Lucian raised his head.

”That was the reason,” he said. ”Not that I was unable. It’s that the first time I nearly went through with it, Cael held me back and revealed what he truly was. A primordial. A Lord of Infinity. The system was how he kept himself tethered to a living path once he vanished from his own rank. If I slipped the bonds too soon, strength wouldn’t be all I’d become. I’d stand out to every eye still hunting for that title.”

Marc fixed his gaze on him, pale and caked with dried blood. ”So the whole time-”

”The whole time, I drew on whatever I could without fully igniting the beacon,” Lucian said. ”Once it rose, everything shifted. Holding back would have gotten the rest of you killed. So I quit holding back.”

Silas exhaled slowly. ”And now the beacon burns.”

”Yes.”

Lucy spoke more softly. ”Cael is one of them. Among the highest.”

”He was,” Lucian said. ”Perhaps he still is. For a long while he has been gone from their ranks. So long that his own people quarrel over whether the seat lies dormant or forsaken. When I opened completely, I didn’t just halt the battle. I shifted his former standing in a way the deepest layers could sense.”

Evelyn had said nothing so far. When she finally spoke, her tone stayed measured. ”You hid that from us.”

”I did.”

”Was it because you figured we couldn’t bear it, or because saying it aloud would make it feel more real?”

Lucian looked straight into her eyes. ”Because for a long while, it was the single thing standing between me and doing something I could never undo, driven by grief. And afterward, because whenever I got near to opening up completely, that first warning still echoed in my ears. Not out of obedience. Out of what it would cost.”

Marc ran a hand slowly down his face. ”You could have said something before I almost burned myself out sustaining the field.”

”I know,” Lucian answered. ”That fault is mine.”

Althea glanced from one to the other, grave. ”Is the danger headed our way now?”

Lucian gave her no false comfort. ”Something will come. Perhaps not today. Perhaps not as a tidy army. But yes. Notice that old does not overlook a flare like that.”

Vyn chafed her arms, as though a chill had crept in. Reia’s eyes had turned inward, already sifting through what it all meant. Finn and Dorian traded a glance that said the world had just grown bigger again, and they were scrambling to keep pace without stumbling. Mira’s grip on her staff tightened.

Evelyn let out a slow breath. ”So Cael isn’t some voice inside the machine. He’s one of the beings the machine was fashioned from.”

”Correct.”

”And you’re bound to him.”

”Correct.”

She gave a single nod, as if tucking the fact away somewhere that both fury and good sense could find it later. ”Then let’s stop discussing this as though it’s only your own private weight to carry. If your full power summons things down, it summons them down on every one of us.”

”That’s exactly why I’m telling you now,” Lucian said.

Lucy drew Althea a touch nearer beneath her arm. ”Good. Because secrets this big get people killed when they come out too late.”

Marc let out a brief, sour laugh. ”I still want to hear the rest of it. Every last bit.” Afterward. When my vision stops doubling. ”You’ll figure it out,” Lucian told him.

He pushed himself up off the rock. One by one, the others got to their feet, some faster than others, battered but standing. Lirael stayed bound and obedient under Evelyn’s hold—a stark reminder that some foes weren’t destroyed, merely beaten for now.

Once more they set off, leaving the open highlands behind for terrain that might shelter them long enough to rest and make plans.

Lucian took a place near the lead, his boundlessness now hushed yet no longer something he fought against. Far past that newer sky, he sensed what his choice on the ridge had set loose: an ancient gaze waking, great houses and ranks and envious foes all turning toward a beacon unseen for ages.

Cael had tried to warn him.

He’d held out as long as he could.

Now his people knew the truth, and the vast cosmos beyond had already caught the flare.

That light could never be sealed away again.

All he could do was live with whatever it called down.
