My Infinite System.

Lucian led them off the plain without looking back.

Marc followed close, one hand still pressed against his ribs. Silas trailed a step behind, arm bound tight against his chest with a strip of torn cloth. The local hunters watched from the broken gate platforms but made no move to stop them. A few raised hands in something like respect. Most just stared.

Silas glanced over his shoulder once. ”They’re going to turn us into campfire stories by nightfall.”

”Let them,” Marc said. His voice was rough. ”We’re not coming back.”

Lucian didn’t comment. He kept walking until the ruined outpost fell out of sight and the air began to thin with the residual pull of a fading rift. The crossing was rough. The space between worlds still carried scars from the Outer God’s presence, and every step left a faint pressure behind the eyes.

They emerged on a stretch of empty highland under a pale sky. Wind moved through dry grass. No gates. No hunters. Just distance.

Silas dropped onto a flat rock and exhaled hard. ”Next time we chase one of those things, I’m voting for a world with actual beds.”

Marc sat more carefully, testing his side. ”You always vote for that. We never get it.”

Lucian remained standing, scanning the horizon. ”How bad?”

”I’ve had worse,” Marc said.

Silas lifted his bound arm a little. ”This’ll keep. Reia’s going to kill me anyway when she sees it.”

Lucian glanced at him. ”She’ll be glad you’re alive.”

”Sure. After she finishes yelling.” Silas leaned back on his good hand. ”How is she?”

”Steady. With Evelyn and Lucy at the keep. They’ve been holding things together.”

Marc looked up. ”And Evelyn?”

”She’s free.” Lucian’s voice stayed even, but something quieter moved under it. ”The Warden had her. We got her out. She’s recovering.”

Silas gave a low whistle. ”About time. You’ve been chasing her ghost long enough.”

Marc studied Lucian for a moment. ”You good?”

”I’m functional.”

”That’s not what I asked.”

Lucian didn’t answer right away. The wind pulled at his coat. In the distance, the highland dropped toward a line of darker hills. ”She’s alive. That’s enough for now.”

They rested only long enough to bind the worst of the injuries properly. Marc used what little control he had left to ease the internal damage along his ribs. Silas sat still while Lucian tightened the makeshift sling, jaw clenched against the pain. No one spoke much during it. There was nothing useful to say.

When they started moving again, the pace was slower. The crossings between residual paths took more effort than they should have. Each transition left a faint ringing in the ears and a brief sense of wrongness, like the worlds themselves were still flinching from what had passed through them.

On the second crossing, the landscape on the other side looked too familiar.

Broken stone roads. The outline of an old hunter outpost long since abandoned. Residual talent energy clinging to the air in faint, tired currents. Lucian slowed without meaning to. Marc noticed.

”Feels like home,” Marc said quietly.

”Pieces of it,” Lucian answered.

Silas looked around, expression unreadable. ”I hate that. Every time we step into one of these places, it feels like the old world is still out there somewhere, just waiting for us to find the right door.”

”It’s not,” Marc said.

”I know. Still hate it.”

They kept walking. The nostalgia sat heavy but unspoken after that. Lucian had learned a long time ago that staring too long at the similarities only made the differences cut deeper. This world had its own dead. Its own broken gates. Its own people who had watched something impossible walk out of a rift and end a fight they couldn’t win. It wasn’t theirs. It only looked like it could have been.

By the time the final stretch came into view, the sky had begun to darken. The keep’s world settled around them with a familiar weight—cleaner air, steadier ground, the faint distant presence of people who knew their names. Marc’s shoulders eased a fraction. Silas muttered something about real food and a chair that didn’t feel like rock.

Lucian felt it first.

A thin, unnatural pressure at the edge of perception. Not the heavy presence of an Outer God. Something quieter. More deliberate. Like a held breath.

He stopped.

Marc noticed immediately. ”What?”

”Something’s off.”

Silas straightened, fatigue pushed aside for the moment. ”Here?”

Lucian’s eyes moved across the darkening hills that led toward the keep. The air felt too still. The usual background currents of the world were muted, as if something had pressed a hand over them.

”I don’t know yet,” he said. ”But it’s close.”

They moved faster after that, injuries ignored as much as possible. The final approach to the keep passed in tense silence. No one came out to meet them. No lights showed beyond the usual evening glow. The gates stood open the way they had left them, but the quiet felt wrong.

Lucian stepped through first.

The courtyard was empty.

No Lucy. No Althea. No sign of the kids or Evelyn. The keep itself stood dark in places it shouldn’t have been. A single door on the upper level hung slightly open, moving just enough in the wind to make a soft sound against the frame.

Marc’s voice was low. ”Lucian.”

”I see it.”

Silas flexed the fingers of his good hand, residual energy flickering weakly around them. ”Please tell me this is just everyone turning in early.”

Lucian didn’t answer.

He walked toward the main hall, senses stretched tight. The pressure he had felt outside was stronger here—thin, cold, and patient. Not an open attack. Something that had already arrived and made itself at home.

Behind him, Marc and Silas followed without needing to be told.

The quiet kept waiting.
