My Infinite System.

Lucian stood alone in the garden long after the others had gone inside. The moon hung low and heavy, silver light spilling across the stone paths like spilled milk. He hadn’t moved in what felt like hours. Just stood there, hands loose at his sides, staring north toward the distant rift that had swallowed his students and the woman he had crossed realities to find.

The night air smelled of damp earth and night-blooming flowers. Somewhere behind him, faint voices drifted from the keep—Lucy’s laugh mixing with Althea’s quieter one, Marc arguing with Silas about something trivial. Normal sounds. Family sounds. They had fought so hard to have this again, and now it felt fragile, like glass held too tightly.

He closed his eyes.

The pull was still there, steady and insistent. Not some grand cosmic flare or system alert. Just the same quiet certainty he had felt since the day he woke up in this second chance. Evelyn was alive. The kids were with her. And something vast and old had decided they all needed to disappear.

Enough waiting.

Lucian turned and walked back toward the keep. His steps were measured, unhurried, the way they used to be before everything became war and regression and endless searching. He passed the bench where he had sat for months, chasing ghosts across realities. He didn’t look at it.

Inside, the main hall was dimly lit. Alistair sat alone at the long table, nursing a cup of something strong. The man looked up as Lucian entered, old eyes sharpening with recognition.

”You felt it too,” Alistair said. No greeting. No questions.

Lucian nodded once. ”They’re in the rift. All of them.”

Alistair set the cup down. His hand was steady, but the lines on his face had deepened since the uneasy alliance began. ”The Warden. She doesn’t play games. If she took them, it’s because she wants you to come.”

”I know.”

”You’re going alone?”

Lucian almost smiled. It didn’t reach his eyes. ”Would you try to stop me?”

Alistair leaned back. ”No. But I’ll tell the others. Lucy won’t like it. Marc will want to follow. Althea... she’s still learning what family means.”

”Tell them to hold the line here.” Lucian’s voice was quiet, final. ”If the Erasors come while I’m gone, the keep needs to stand. The family needs to stand.”

Alistair studied him for a long moment. Then he nodded. ”Bring them back.”

Lucian didn’t answer. He simply turned and walked deeper into the keep, toward the old training rooms where he had first begun teaching Finn all those months ago. The space was empty now, the mats worn from use, the air still carrying the faint scent of sweat and determination.

He stood in the center and closed his eyes again.

No grand declarations. No system windows flaring to life. Just him, alone with the weight of everything he had carried since the regression. He breathed in slowly, then out. The power inside him didn’t surge or blaze. It simply woke up, steady and vast, like an ocean remembering it had tides.

When he opened his eyes, the air around him had changed. Not dramatically. Just enough. A faint shimmer at the edges of his vision. The kind of presence that made the world feel smaller.

He walked to the far wall and pressed his palm against the stone. A ripple spread outward. The training room folded away, replaced by open night air and the distant glow of the Veridian rift on the horizon. No ceremony. No portal with flashing lights. Just a step between one place and another.

Lucian started walking.

The capital fell behind him quickly. He didn’t run. Didn’t need to. The ground seemed to move beneath his feet, carrying him north at a steady, relentless pace. Villages passed in blurs. Forests thinned into open plains scarred by old battles. The air grew colder, sharper, carrying the metallic tang of unstable magic.

By the time he reached the rift site, the Veridian soldiers had already cleared a wide perimeter. They recognized him immediately. Some bowed. Others simply stepped aside, eyes wide with something between awe and fear. Lucian didn’t acknowledge them. His gaze was fixed on the tear in reality at the center of the crater.

It pulsed like a wound. Colors that shouldn’t exist bled into the night. Shadows moved within it, hungry and patient.

He stopped at the edge.

For a long moment, he just stood there. The soldiers watched in silence. The wind tugged at his simple clothes. Somewhere behind him, a bird called out and went quiet, as if even nature knew better than to interrupt.

Lucian raised one hand.

Not dramatically. Just enough.

The rift shuddered. The shadows inside recoiled. For the first time since it had opened, the tear in reality seemed to hesitate.

Then Lucian stepped forward.

The soldiers later swore the ground trembled. Not from force or explosion, but from the simple weight of his intention. He walked straight into the rift without slowing. The unstable energies washed over him like water over stone. They tried to pull him apart, to erase him, to drag him into the grey nothing beyond.

They failed.

Inside, the pocket dimension stretched endlessly. Grey. Empty. Chains of light beginning to form in the distance, reaching toward where he knew the kids and Evelyn waited.

Lucian kept walking.

The Warden’s presence manifested ahead of him—not fully, just a projection, those vast starlit eyes narrowing in something like surprise.

”You came,” she said. Her voice echoed through the grey. ”Alone.”

Lucian didn’t stop. ”Where are they?”

The Warden smiled that small, elegant smile. ”Confined. Safe. For now. You should have stayed away, Lucian. This fracture you created—it ends here.”

He kept walking. The distance between them shrank without effort.

The Warden raised a hand. Pressure slammed down, the same crushing weight that had dropped the kids to their knees. The grey tightened around him like a fist.

Lucian walked through it.

The pressure broke against him like waves against a cliff. No dramatic explosion. No shouted defiance. He simply kept moving, eyes steady, face calm.

The Warden’s smile faltered for the first time.

”You don’t understand what you’re—”

Lucian lifted his hand.

The grey dimension cracked. Not dramatically. Just a single, clean fracture running through the nothing like lightning through cloud. The chains of light in the distance rattled violently.

The Warden vanished.

Lucian kept walking.

Somewhere ahead, in the heart of the prison, three battered students and one exhausted woman felt the shift. The draining pressure eased, just a fraction. Evelyn’s eyes opened fully for the first time in what felt like years.

”He’s here,” she whispered.

Finn pushed himself up, blood still drying on his side. Mira gripped her staff. Dorian managed a tired grin despite the pain.

The real fight had finally begun.
