My Infinite System.

Alistair felt the difference the moment Lucian left the younger layers.

It was nothing, not really. Not a message, not anything that he could parse through normal means. More like a pressure line going slack somewhere only blood and old rank could feel. One second the boy’s presence was still a press against the wider field, sharp and unbound and impossible to miss. The next, that press had moved off the map and on to routes most living things never learned to notice.

Alistair stood in the center of the ruined inheritance seat, chuckled under his breath.

”No goodbye to your old man,” he said to the empty dark. ”Polite as ever.”

Broken platforms drifted around him in slow, dead orbits. The false court was gone. What hung in pieces of the realm was latticed authority and broken light bleeding out of cracks that would not become doors again. He’d reclaimed the inheritance in the middle of that mess and it had taken him on with sullen obedience as a house recognizes it’s original key after too many counterfeit owners.

He rolled a shoulder, felt the deep swell of power settle in his bones. Stronger than before. Clearer. Less poisoned by the old hunger that had made every decision a prelude to disaster. It was the vital part. He’d meant what he’d said when Lucian found him here. Reclaimed inheritance was not reclaimed sickness.

But

a farewell would have been traditional.

Alistair moved towards the nearest viable exit line, one of the few that still had a weak tether to younger realities. He had no intention of chasing Lucian into the void like a lone ghost. He only meant to move, to test out the range of what he’d taken back, to see how far the inheritance now went when he bothered to stretch it. ℴ

The route refused him.

At first he thought he was misreading the lattice. The realm was damaged, connections were rotten. He adjusted, took another line, then another, until each met him with the same smooth, absolute denial. No wild resistance of hostile power. No clumsy barrier of a lesser jailer. This was clean, exact, and personal.

Alistair went still.

Then he tried harder.

Authority rolled out of him in a wide, patient wave, the kind of thing once made councils lower their eyes. He pressed it against the boundary of the ruined realm and felt the boundary answer him with Lucian’s mark all the way through. Infinite binding, quiet and complete, laid over every exit like a second sky. No theatrics, no warning note. Just the fact of it.

He could not leave.

For a moment Alistair only stood there, one hand suspended in the dead light, the truth arranging itself with insulting clarity.

Lucian had locked him in.

Not roughly, not in rage, but with the same practical finality the boy always used when deciding who walked into danger and who did not. At some point after their meeting, perhaps immediately after, perhaps while Alistair was still admiring his own recovered strength, Lucian had confined him neatly to the inheritance realm as cleanly as a man closes a gate behind a horse that he doesn’t trust on the open road.

Alistair’s mouth twitched.

Then he burst out laughing.

The sound cracked across the ruined seat, rough and real, echoing off broken pillars and hollow halls. He laughed hard enough that it pulled at old scars in his chest, hard enough that a nearby drifting platform shivered in reaction to his uncontrolled flare of amusement.

”Cheeky boy,” he said, wiping at one eye with the back of his hand. ”You absolute cheeky boy.”

He turned in a slow circle, now seeing the prison in what it was. The inheritance realm was still his in claim and power, that part Lucian had not stolen. But the exits were sealed with someone that had a good enough grip on infinity to make it hold even against a father who had just become dangerous again.

”You stood there,” Alistair told the empty air, ”listened to me talk about inheritance and good intentions, nodded like a respectful son, and then quietly caged the house around me before walking off to war.”

Another laugh rolled out of him, softer but no less real.

There was anger in it, of course. He was not so reformed that confining him amused him purely. No man of his rank and history enjoyed a boundary they hadn’t chosen. Though beneath the anger, there was something else, reluctant and almost proud. Lucian had not preached, had not threatened, had not asked him to swear oaths he might afterwards break. He’d simply taken away Alistair’s ability to become a sudden variable in a field that was already overfull of disasters.

Practical.

Cold.

Effective.

Family.

Alistair walked the perimeter of the central platform, testing the binding in smaller ways. He tried splitting his presence. He tried descending older authority channels beneath the realm. He tried the crude method of breaking the local structure hard enough to crack into somewhere else. All failed with the same clean refusal. Lucian’s work did not struggle against him, it ignored him, which was worse.

”You learned that from me,” Alistair murmured. ”Or all the people who had to survive me.”

He sat at last on a broken step where some pretender had once tried to look important. The dead realm moved around him in silence. Far beyond the sealed boundary, he could still faintly sense Lucian’s trajectory, an unbound line cutting towards older attention. The boy was going alone, of course, he always had. The same instinct for solitary burden had always been there, even before infinity, even before regression, second lives and the rest of the tragic machinery.

Alistair tipped his head back and closed his eyes.

”You could have asked,” he said to the distance. ”I might even have agreed.”

That was probably a lie, or half a lie. Agreement had depended on the hour, the threat, and whether he felt like being obedient to his own son. Lucian had clearly decided not to gamble on any of those variables.

Cheeky, and not wrong.

Alistair’s laughter returned again, quieter, worn down into something almost fond.

”All right,” he told the sealed realm. ”Have it your way. I’ll sit in my inheritance like a retired calamity while you go court the deep ranks. But when you come back- and you will come back- we are going to talk about boundaries, you little tyrant.”

No answer came from the void.

He’d not expected one.

Around him, the ruined seat of power continued its slow collapse and reconstitution under his claim. The inheritance was real, the strength was real, the confinement was also real. Somehow the combination made him feel more like a father than the free years.

Alistair rested his elbows on his knees and grinned into the dark.

”Cheeky boy,” he said again.

Then he began, patiently, methodically, to study the seal from the inside- not because he thought he’d break it today- but because Lucian had made a statement.

And Alistair, being what he was, always answered statements eventually.
