My Infinite System.

The next morning, Lucian cleared his desk.

Not literally. The notes remained. The vials. The books. But he pushed them to one side, creating space. Then he pulled two chairs into the center of the room and sat in one.

”Sit,” he said.

Finn sat. Mira sat. They looked at each other, then at Lucian.

”Things change,” Lucian said. ”You’re not just learning spirit affinity anymore, Mira. You’re learning everything. And you’re not just learning separately. You’re learning together.”

Finn frowned. ”Together?”

”Together means you train together, eat together, study together. You learn each other’s rhythms. You learn to trust each other’s instincts.” Lucian leaned back. ”When magic fails—and it will fail—you’ll have each other. That’s worth more than any spell.”

Mira’s eyes were wide. ”You’re really going to teach us? Both of us?”

”I’m going to teach you to survive. What you do after that is your choice.”

---

The days blurred into a routine.

Mornings began before sunrise. Lucian took them to a hidden courtyard behind the alchemy wing, where no one went. They ran. They stretched. They threw punches at bags Lucian had created from nothing, bags that repaired themselves after each strike.

Finn taught Mira the basics. How to make a fist. How to shift her weight. How to fall without breaking herself. He was patient in a way he hadn’t expected. Maybe because he saw himself in her—the desperation, the hunger, the fear of being sent back to nothing.

”Good,” he said, after she landed a solid kick on the bag. ”Again.”

She kicked again. Harder.

Lucian watched from the edge of the courtyard, arms crossed. He didn’t interrupt. He didn’t correct. He let them find their own rhythm.

Afternoons were for magic.

Lucian had created new exercises, ones tailored to both of them. Finn worked on combining his affinities—fire and water, earth and air, space and time. The combinations were unstable at first. He almost set his sleeve on fire twice. He flooded the courtyard once. Mira laughed at him. He splashed her back.

”Focus,” Lucian said.

”Hard to focus when I’m wet.”

”Then dry yourself.”

Finn hadn’t thought of that. He reached for fire, but gently, warmth without flame. Steam rose from his clothes. The water evaporated. Mira stared.

”You can do that?”

”I didn’t know I could.”

”Now you do.” Lucian turned to Mira. ”Your turn. Find the hum. Not with your chest. With your hands.”

Mira closed her eyes. Her fingers twitched. The air between her palms shimmered—not heat, not light, something else. A distortion. A connection.

”Good,” Lucian said. ”Hold it.”

She held it for three seconds. Then the shimmer collapsed. She opened her eyes, breathing hard.

”How was that?”

”You lasted longer than yesterday.”

”That’s not a compliment.”

”It’s progress.” Lucian looked at both of them. ”Progress is all that matters.”

---

Evenings were for theory and combat.

Lucian taught them to fight without magic. His methods were brutal. He showed them how to disable an opponent with a finger to the throat, a knee to the groin, a palm strike to the nose. He made them practice on each other until their bodies ached.

”When magic fails, your body is all you have,” he said. ”Make it a weapon.”

Finn’s knuckles were raw. Mira’s wrists were bruised. But they kept going.

---

The news spread.

It always did.

Mira, the null who couldn’t light a candle, was now making crystals glow. Mira, the orphan with no future, was now keeping pace with Finn, the seven-affinity prodigy. Students whispered. Instructors fumed. The council convened another closed session.

Requests started coming.

Third-years. Fourth-years. Even a few instructors, too proud to ask directly but too curious to stay away. They wanted Lucian to teach them. They wanted his methods, his potions, his secrets.

Lucian turned them all down.

”No,” he said to the first student who knocked.

”No,” he said to the second.

”No,” he said to Professor Thorn, who came personally, who stood in the doorway with his sharp beard and sharper pride.

”I’m not asking for myself,” Thorn said. ”I’m asking for the Academy. Your methods could revolutionize—”

”I’m not interested in revolutionizing anything.”

”Then what are you interested in?”

Lucian looked at him. ”Teaching two students. That’s all.”

Thorn left. The requests stopped. The whispers continued.

---

One night, the three of them sat on the roof of the Academy’s east tower.

Finn had discovered the spot weeks ago, a flat expanse of slate hidden behind a decorative chimney. No one came up here. No one knew it existed. They brought blankets and bread and water, and they sat in a row, looking up at the moon.

It was full. Bright. The kind of moon that made you feel small.

Mira broke the silence.

”I was seven when my mother died,” she said. ”Fever. There was no healer. No money for medicine. I watched her fade over three days.”

Finn didn’t speak. Neither did Lucian.

”After that, I was alone. The orphanage took me in, but I wasn’t there long. Too many children. Not enough food. I ran away when I was nine.”

”Where did you go?” Finn asked.

”Everywhere. Nowhere. I slept in doorways. Stole what I needed. Ran from guards.” Mira’s voice was calm, like she was reciting someone else’s story. ”I had a friend, though. For a while.”

Lucian turned his head. Just slightly.

”His name was Caleb,” Mira continued. ”He was older. Twelve, maybe. He found me behind a bakery, shivering, half-starved. He gave me his bread. His whole bread. I asked why. He said because no one should be alone.”

Mira pulled her knees to her chest.

”We stayed together for two years. We had a system. He stole food. I kept watch. We slept in the same alley, shared the same blanket, told each other stories to pass the nights. He wanted to be a mage. Said he could feel something inside him, something waiting to wake up. I thought he was crazy.”

”Was he?” Finn asked.

”I don’t know. One day, he was gone. Just... gone. No note. No warning. His blanket was still there. His shoes were still there. But he wasn’t.”

Lucian’s breathing changed. Finn noticed. Mira didn’t.

”I looked for him,” Mira said. ”For weeks. Months. I asked everyone. The bakers. The beggars. The guards. No one remembered him. It was like he’d never existed.”

The moon hung overhead. Bright. Cold.

”I thought I was going mad,” Mira continued. ”I started to doubt myself. Maybe I’d imagined him. Maybe I’d been alone the whole time. But I remembered his face. His voice. The way he laughed when I told a bad joke. I couldn’t have made that up.”

Lucian spoke. His voice was quiet. ”What happened to him?”

”I don’t know. That’s the worst part. He just... stopped being there.” Mira wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. ”I stopped looking after a while. What was the point? No one else remembered. It was like he’d been erased.”

The word hung in the air.

Erased.

Finn felt the shift before he saw it. Lucian went very still. Not the stillness of calm—the stillness of a predator recognizing prey. Of a hunter finding a trail.

”Mira,” Lucian said. ”When did Caleb disappear?”

”Five years ago. Maybe six. I don’t remember exactly.”

”And before he disappeared—did he ever talk about seeing things? Things that weren’t there?”

Mira frowned. ”How did you know?”

”Because the same thing happened to me.”

Lucian stood up. He walked to the edge of the roof, looked out at the city, at the moon, at the stars.

”I came to this world looking for someone,” he said. ”Someone who was erased. Someone no one remembers but me.” He turned back to face them. ”Her name is Evelyn. And she disappeared the same way your friend did.”

Mira’s eyes widened. ”You think... you think they’re connected?”

”I think something is taking people. Erasing them. Leaving no trace but the memories of a few who can’t be fooled.” Lucian’s jaw tightened. ”I think I just found my next lead.”

Finn stood up. ”What do we do?”

”We find out who Caleb was. Where he came from. What he could do.” Lucian looked at Mira. ”You’re going to help us.”

Mira nodded. Her hands were shaking, but her voice was steady. ”Anything. I’ll do anything.”

”Good.” Lucian sat back down. ”Tomorrow, we start searching. Tonight, we rest.”

They sat in silence, looking at the moon.

The weight of the night pressed down on them—loss and hope and the possibility of answers.

Finn reached over and squeezed Mira’s hand. She squeezed back.

Lucian stared at the stars.

Somewhere out there, Evelyn was waiting.

And for the first time in months, he had a direction.
