My Infinite System.

The last stretch of the tower was no longer stairs.

It was a gauntlet of living memory.

The corridor narrowed into a spiraling ascent that defied geometry—walls folding inward, then outward, forcing them to climb at angles that should have been impossible. The grey light had turned sickly, veined with black. Every breath tasted of dust and forgotten things.

Finn led, ribs burning from the gash across his side. Blood soaked his dark blue tunic, but he ignored it. Space folded around him in short, jagged bursts, letting him cover ground while his clones—four of them now—flanked the group. Each clone carried a different affinity, rotating through fire, water, earth, and air in a ceaseless defensive weave.

Behind him, Mira moved with grim determination. Her staff never stopped humming. Silver threads of spirit energy lashed out constantly, severing the tower’s connections to the entities that kept spawning from the walls. Her nose had stopped bleeding, but her eyes were bloodshot, her perception pushed to its limit.

Dorian brought up the rear, one arm hanging limp, the other wreathed in unsteady flame. His breathing was ragged, but his jaw was set. Every few steps he unleashed a burst of superheated air that scorched the corridor behind them, buying precious seconds.

”They’re adapting faster,” Mira warned. ”The tower is learning how we fight.”

As if to prove her point, the next wave came differently.

No longer simple liquid masses or void spheres. These were amalgamations—taller, more solid, their bodies woven from condensed forgetting and jagged crystal. They moved with eerie intelligence, coordinating like a pack. One feinted high while another struck low, barbed tendrils aiming to ensnare and erase.

Finn met the first with a devastating uppercut reinforced by earth and fire. The construct shattered, but its fragments reformed into two smaller guardians that immediately flanked him. A clone intercepted one. The real Finn spun, space twisting, and drove a knee through the second.

Mira’s threads flashed. She bound three constructs at once, yanking their anchors free. They collapsed into harmless mist, but the effort made her stagger. Dorian caught her elbow, steadying her while unleashing a roaring cyclone of flame and wind that cleared the corridor ahead.

”Keep moving!” Finn shouted.

They climbed.

The tower retaliated with malice.

Sections of the corridor inverted—gravity flipping without warning. Finn adapted instantly, using space affinity to reorient himself mid-fall. Mira anchored herself with spirit threads to the ”floor.” Dorian cursed as he slammed into what had been the ceiling, flames flaring to cushion the impact.

A new type of entity emerged from the inverted sections—elongated, serpentine things made of swirling void and liquid crystal. They moved like living whips, striking with precision that targeted joints and weak points. One lashed across Finn’s already injured side, reopening the gash deeper. Pain flared, hot and bright.

He roared and retaliated. Six clones now—each a perfect mirror—unleashed a coordinated barrage. Firestorms. Earthen spikes. Spatial tears that ripped the serpents apart. The corridor shook violently.

Mira was breathing hard, but her voice stayed steady. ”The top is close. I can feel the concentration of threads—thousands of them, all converging.”

Dorian’s flames flickered dangerously low. ”Then let’s not keep it waiting.”

They pushed through the pain.

The final ascent became a blur of violence.

Constructs poured from every surface. The tower no longer hid its intent—it threw wave after wave, each more desperate than the last. Liquid horrors mixed with void amalgamations. Crystal serpents coiled around inverted pillars. The air itself seemed to fight them, thickening, trying to smother their movements.

Finn fought like a force of nature. His clones blurred in perfect synchronization, a small army of himself wielding the full spectrum of his affinities. He punched through one guardian, teleported behind another, anchored a third with earth before shattering it with fire. Blood loss made his vision tunnel, but he refused to slow.

Mira’s spirit perception had become a weapon of surgical precision. She no longer just severed threads—she predicted them, cutting the tower’s reinforcements before the entities could fully form. Her staff moved in elegant, deadly arcs, silver light carving through the darkness.

Dorian, despite his injuries, refused to fall behind. He channeled everything into devastating area denial—tornadoes of flame that cleared entire sections, buying the others time to advance. When a serpent nearly took Mira’s leg, he burned it to ash with a scream of defiance.

Step by agonizing step, they climbed.

The corridor began to change. The grey light brightened, tinged with gold at the edges. The entities grew fewer but stronger—each one a towering sentinel of condensed forgetting, their forms shifting rapidly between liquid, crystal, and void.

One final guardian blocked the last landing.

It was massive, easily twice Finn’s height, its body a swirling nightmare of every previous foe they had faced. Tendrils of liquid crystal lashed out. Voids opened across its torso like hungry mouths. It moved with terrible purpose, guarding a simple, unassuming door at the top of the stairs.

The door to Evelyn.

”This is it,” Finn said, voice hoarse.

They attacked as one.

Finn and his clones struck the front, a whirlwind of fists, space tears, and elemental fury. Mira circled to the side, her spirit threads weaving a cage that slowed the guardian’s regeneration. Dorian poured everything into a single, concentrated lance of white-hot flame, driving it straight into the creature’s core.

The guardian roared—a sound that wasn’t sound, but the absence of it. The tower trembled. Cracks spiderwebbed across the walls.

Finn saw the opening. He dismissed his clones, gathering every ounce of power. Space folded violently around him. Time slowed to a crawl in his perception. He drove forward, a single, perfect strike—earth to anchor, fire to burn, air to propel, water to flow through defenses, space and time to deliver the blow exactly where it needed to land.

His fist connected with the guardian’s core.

The creature shattered.

Shards exploded outward, dissolving into harmless light before they could reform. The corridor fell silent except for their ragged breathing.

The door stood before them—simple wood, unadorned, yet radiating power.

Finn reached for the handle.

Behind them, the tower groaned one final time, as if in defeat.

Far away, in the capital...

Lucian stood alone in the garden where it had all begun.

The sun was setting, painting the sky in hues of violet and gold. Lucy was somewhere with Althea. Marc and the others were resting. Alistair had retreated to brood in silence.

But Lucian felt it.

A shift.

A pull.

He turned slowly toward the northern horizon, eyes narrowing. Power stirred within him—the Infinite System flaring in response to something vast and distant.

His lips moved, almost soundless.

”Evelyn.”

The wind carried the name away.

He took one step forward, then stopped. Not yet. Not until they returned.

But for the first time in months, something like hope—sharp, painful, real—ignited in his chest.

He looked toward the horizon a moment longer.

Then he turned back toward the keep, already moving to prepare.

They were coming.

And the real fight was only beginning.
