Gene Unlocking: I Evolve Every Day

Chapter 138: Chapter 129: Is There No Rule of Law Anymore?

The next day, early morning.

In the living room, Lu Li and Liu Kexin were sitting at the dining table having breakfast.

Today they were eating a Western breakfast, with tuna mousse, charcoal-grilled octopus, fruit salad, and French toast on the table, among other things.

There’s no denying, Aunt Huang’s cooking skills are impressive, she can make dishes from almost any cuisine.

Lu Li wasn’t focused on the food; he looked at Liu Kexin, who was eating toast across from him, and blinked as he asked, ”Have you thought about what we talked about last night?”

Liu Kexin returned to her usual rigid demeanor, expressionless she said, ”I haven’t been resting well lately, my mental state isn’t great, and I don’t remember anything from last night.”

Lu Li: ”...”

He never expected the boomerang to return so quickly.

Last night, he implanted an illusion in her mind.

Using her lack of rest causing hallucinations as a cover.

Today she used it as an excuse to play dumb with him.

Thinking back to last night, he couldn’t help but feel secretly delighted.

He finally kissed Liu Kexin, although she was extremely uncooperative, and pushed him away almost immediately, at least she didn’t reject his kiss right away.

What does this mean?

It means if he tries harder, there’s really hope of breaking down her psychological defenses and winning her over.

That’s why, after kissing her last night, he seized the opportunity to ask Liu Kexin if she could be his girlfriend.

She might have been a bit flustered at the time, saying she would go back to her room and think about it.

Who would have thought that when he asked again today, she would deny it!

Lu Li looked speechless and said, ”Liu Kexin, you can’t do this.”

Liu Kexin continued to play dumb, ”What did I do?”

Lu Li wanted to say something else.

Suddenly, Liu Kexin’s phone on the table rang.

She put down the piece of toast in her hand and wiped her hands with a napkin.

Liu Kexin picked up the phone and answered, ”Hello, this is Liu Kexin.”

Lu Li didn’t intentionally eavesdrop, but his keen hearing allowed him to hear the voice on the other end.

It was still Sun Demin calling.

His tone was full of anger, ”President Liu, those Burmese people are unreliable. They’ve taken the money but haven’t released the person. They demand another 10 million in ransom. I don’t think we should give it. Even if we pay, they might still not release the person, so I’m calling to ask if you have any other ways to rescue them.”

Liu Kexin frowned, ”Hmm, got it. Don’t worry, I’ll think of a way.”

Sun Demin quickly thanked her, ”Thank you, thank you, Miss Liu.”

Liu Kexin asked, ”Where are you now?”

Sun Demin replied, ”I’m in Mandalay, but the kidnappers are over in Monywa.”

Liu Kexin asked again, ”How many people do those kidnappers have, and what’s their equipment like?”

Sun Demin recalled the information, ”They have about thirty to forty people, almost all of them are armed.”

Liu Kexin acknowledged, hanging up the phone, and then began searching for a number in her phone book.

Lu Li blinked and asked, ”Those kidnappers won’t release the person after taking the money?”

Perhaps Liu Kexin was too worried about Chen Man Ni’s safety to pay attention to why Lu Li knew the phone’s content.

She absent-mindedly replied, ”Hmm, just paying the ransom doesn’t seem to work. I plan to hire some mercenaries from Ugly Country to go rescue them.”

Lu Li knew a bit about the Myanmar kidnappers, knowing that kidnappings were rampant there.

Let alone kidnapping foreign business tycoons; even their own country’s business tycoons and celebrities get kidnapped often.

As for hiring mercenaries from Ugly Country.

To be honest, Lu Li felt the hope of rescuing her wasn’t high.

He had read a news report before.

A boss in Myanmar, for the sake of personal safety.

Spent a big sum to hire twelve top mercenaries from the Ugly Country’s Shadow Defense Company.

But those twelve mercenaries lost contact shortly after arriving, and there has been no information about them since.

It’s not that the Shadow Defense Company’s mercenaries weren’t professional.

In fact, the company is quite strong, providing mercenaries specifically for the Ugly Country’s Marine Corps.

Lu Li thought those twelve mercenaries from the Shadow Defense Company went missing likely because they weren’t familiar with Myanmar’s mountainous terrain, leading to an ambush or they were simply killed.

You have to know that Shadow Defense Company’s mercenaries are top-notch in Ugly Country, yet they couldn’t operate in Myanmar.

Therefore, even if Liu Kexin spends a big amount to hire some powerful mercenaries, they might not rescue the person.

Whether they can rescue them is one thing.

Another thing is, the kidnappers are ruthless.

They might kill the hostage if they see someone coming to rescue them.

After a brief contemplation, Lu Li said, ”Don’t call anyone else; I’ll go to Myanmar and see.”

Liu Kexin paused, looked up, and said with a frown, ”Lu Li, I know you’re great at fighting, and you can face more than a dozen armed thugs fearlessly, but this time there are a lot more kidnappers, and they’re reportedly armed. I won’t let you take such a risk.”

Lu Li initially wanted to explain, but seeing Liu Kexin’s firm eyes, he knew it was no use saying anything.

He understood why Liu Kexin didn’t agree to let him go and rescue her.

On one hand, as Liu Kexin said, she didn’t want him to risk his life.

On the other hand, Liu Kexin’s understanding of him was still limited to knowing he’s good at martial arts; she didn’t know his true strength.

Ultimately, she’s reluctant to let him take the risk.

Lu Li decided not to explain any further.

Just head straight to Myanmar.

Consider it a favor repaid to Chen Man Ni.

Also, it’s a chance to test how much his own abilities have improved.

As for finding Sun Demin once he arrives, that’s the easiest part.

Last night, he memorized Sun Demin’s phone number in Myanmar.

Call him once I get to Mandalay.

Luckily, his passport was ready beforehand.

Now Myanmar has resumed visa-on-arrival.

Otherwise, there would really be no way to go.

Later, while having breakfast, Lu Li checked flight information and what he needed for a visa-on-arrival.

After figuring everything out, he pretended to be full and drove off from Su City in a hurry.

...

On the other side.

Zhang Guocheng was holding a special meeting with several leaders from the East China Region.

Eight people in total.

Among them, Ma Yangming, Zhang Guocheng’s superior and the highest authority in the East China Region, also personally came to the site to chair the meeting due to the special nature of the matter.

”Wha... What?”

”This guy called Lu Li is actually a superpower wielder?”

”And he can explode with power comparable to a small nuclear bomb?”

The leaders were all stunned, their faces filled with disbelief.

Ma Yangming was also initially shocked, but then he gave a wry smile, ”Old Zhang, are you kidding?”

Zhang Guocheng hesitated, ”Boss, why would I be joking?”

Ma Yangming was somewhat skeptical, ”You said before he runs as fast as a car, can lift two or three tons with his arms, which I can barely believe, and even that he can cause explosions akin to small bombs with flames and ice spikes, I can still somewhat accept. But saying he can explode with the power comparable to a small nuclear bomb, isn’t that too exaggerated?”

”Yeah, that’s too exaggerated.”

”I also find it hard to believe.”

The other six whispered among themselves.

Zhang Guocheng said helplessly, ”I’ve seen it with Xiaolin and the others, why would I lie about something like this?”

Ma Yangming asked, ”Do you have a video?”

Zhang Guocheng shook his head, ”At the time, Lu Li used his superpower so suddenly that we didn’t have time to record a video.”

Ma Yangming and the other six exchanged smiles, thinking Zhang Guocheng had encountered a ”magic master.”

Of course, as colleagues, they wouldn’t accuse Zhang Guocheng of being deceived; it would ruin the camaraderie.

Ma Yangming acknowledged, ”Alright, I understand the situation. Have someone keep an eye on him. If he does anything excessive, we’ll take action immediately to prevent him from jeopardizing society.”

Zhang Guocheng replied with mixed feelings, ”I called you all here for this meeting because Lu Li found out we were tailing him and sat down with me for a straightforward talk, saying he doesn’t want people following him around all day. If there’s any issue, just call him. So, I wanted to ask you, boss...”

”He’s being ridiculous!” Ma Yangming said bluntly, ”Does he think he can do whatever he wants? Is there no law anymore? Old Zhang, don’t mind me saying, he might be young and naive, but at your age, you should know better. Keep tracking his whereabouts, I’ll take responsibility for any consequences!”

Zhang Guocheng tried to explain further.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.

Shortly after, Xiaolin’s voice came from outside, ”Director Zhang, I have something urgent to report.”

Zhang Guocheng glanced at Ma Yangming and saw him nod; then he called out, ”What is it? Come in and talk.”

The next moment, the door to the small conference room creaked open.

Xiaolin came in hurriedly, ”Director, I just received news that Lu Li went to Myanmar.”

...

Because there are no direct flights from Shanghai to Myanmar.

Lu Li took a flight to Kunming first.

Then bought a ticket in Kunming and landed directly in Yangon.

Afterwards, he processed the visa-on-arrival in Yangon and bought a flight ticket to Mandalay.

When he arrived in Mandalay, it was around six in the evening.

It could be said that Lu Li spent almost the entire day on planes and at airports.

Mandalay is a city nestled between mountains and water, with countless pagodas of varying sizes, and the scenery is quite nice.

But Lu Li wasn’t interested in sightseeing.

He called Sun Demin immediately to arrange a meeting place.

He waited for about thirteen or fourteen minutes at the entrance of a small theatre.

Lu Li saw Sun Demin getting off a taxi.

He approached and greeted, ”President Sun.”

Sun Demin looked excited, ”Mr. Lu, you personally came, did Miss Liu send you to bring people over for a rescue?”

He thought Liu Kexin took quick action by hiring mercenaries for the rescue immediately.

Little did he know that Lu Li’s next sentence would completely dumbfound him.

Lu Li said plainly, ”I came to rescue, but I didn’t bring anyone else.”

Sun Demin: ”...”
