Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Veyrath brought the elite team’s captain to the core room before the restricted report finished transferring.

Neither man arrived armed. Sanctuary’s ordinary rules made weapons unnecessary outside the Arena, and the meeting concerned whether they would carry weapons somewhere else.

Max gave them the report without shortening it.

The missing attacker had belonged to a group that concentrated on damaging terrain rather than advancing quickly. His companions burned young trees, cut elevated roads, and drove metal spikes into exposed roots. Edrin’s defenders interpreted the destruction as an attempt to slow reinforcements.

The interpretation remained reasonable. It was no longer complete.

Merrit had examined the image of the broken clasp and sent a preliminary conclusion. The object inside the case had probably been designed to remain dormant while hostile power or observation surrounded it. Delayed activation allowed equipment to survive searches that detected active magic.

No record explained what the object did after waking.

”How many people are you willing to send?” Max asked Veyrath.

”Six from the elite team for the first entry.” Veyrath replied. ”The captain leads. Two defensive specialists, a route scout, a ranged fighter, and a combat healer complete the group. I will enter after the receiving area is proven secure.”

The captain did not object to Veyrath remaining behind during the first crossing. The choice placed command where it could respond if the gate became compromised.

”Volunteers?” Max asked.

”All six.”

”Did they receive the resurrection warning?”

”Yes. Their protection inside Sanctuary does not follow them into another dungeon. Edrin has not claimed any comparable authority.”

The members had still volunteered. Max respected the decision without pretending respect removed his responsibility for sending them well prepared.

The captain asked what would happen if Edrin attempted to retain the team after the mission began.

”He can close his side of the gate.” Max said. ”The agreement cannot physically prevent him from doing so.”

”Then the safe-conduct promise depends on his character.”

”Every promise eventually does.” Quin replied. ”The written terms make a violation visible. They do not make betrayal impossible.”

The captain accepted the distinction. He requested portable supplies for three days beyond the planned mission and independent shelter that did not rely on Orchard terrain. The additional weight reduced how much specialized equipment the first group could carry, but Veyrath approved it.

Merrit’s technicians made the opposite choice. They wanted more instruments and assumed the receiving settlement could provide food and shelter. Their contract keeper revised the preparation list after learning Sanctuary’s soldiers would arrive able to survive if every local service failed.

”Preparation communicates distrust.” Merrit said.

”It also prevents hunger from deciding whether someone accepts a bad demand.” Anna replied.

Merrit added emergency supplies to his technicians’ equipment.

The change delayed departure by less than an hour and removed one more source of pressure Edrin might otherwise control.

Anna reviewed the proposed gate location. Edrin offered an outer settlement more than four major route changes from his core. A wide clearing provided room for barriers, supplies, and a controlled withdrawal. The affected western region lay two hours away under ordinary conditions.

”Who controls closure?” she asked.

”Edrin and Max must both consent to open it.” Quin said. ”Either Dungeon Master can close it alone. We can also collapse our receiving structure from Sanctuary’s side if something prevents the formal command.”

”Can the living weapon issue Edrin’s closure command?”

No one had yet proven a living weapon existed, but Quin used the term because the false instructions already behaved as if something were creating them.

”The gate requires Dungeon Master authority.” Max replied. ”A copied voice will not be enough.”

”Unless the influence has learned more than his voice.”

Max added the concern to the questions Edrin needed to answer.

The three Dungeon Masters reconvened through the shared channel. Edrin joined them with his chief warden. The older man introduced himself as Halden and immediately asked who would command foreign personnel inside the Orchard.

”Their own officers.” Dagar said.

”Then three forces will enter my territory with three separate commanders.” Halden replied.

”Two forces.” Max said. ”Sanctuary and the Redoubt. Merrit’s technicians are not soldiers.”

Merrit objected to the distinction.

”My people will carry defensive equipment and can refuse any instruction that places them in unnecessary danger.”

”They still require a field commander during an attack.” Dagar said.

”They require an escort. They do not require your authority over their work.”

The argument demonstrated why an agreement was necessary before the gate opened. Good intentions would not decide whose order mattered when a route moved beneath them.

Max proposed a limited structure.

Edrin retained control over terrain, Orchard residents, and local wardens. Veyrath would coordinate the foreign expedition once he crossed. Each participating group retained authority to withdraw its own people. No one could redirect the expedition toward Edrin’s core or protected settlements without his approval. An immediate threat allowed any commander to order a temporary retreat, but permanent changes to Orchard terrain remained Edrin’s decision.

”What happens when his decision endangers everyone?” Dagar asked.

Edrin answered before Max could.

”Then your people withdraw. You do not seize my dungeon because you dislike my orders.”

”I asked who decides whether a route is safe.”

”My wardens know the Orchard.”

”Your wardens are missing because the Orchard gave them false instructions.”

Halden spoke over Edrin’s response.

”Foreign scouts may challenge a route. They may not open another without approval. If the Dungeon Master and I are unavailable, the safest action is withdrawal.”

The captain accepted the condition. Dagar accepted after adding that no Orchard command could forbid his squad from defending itself.

Merrit’s concern involved ownership.

”If my technicians identify or disable the device, the Thousand Works receives access to the recovered object.”

”No.” Edrin said.

”You requested expertise you do not possess.”

”I did not offer ownership of anything inside my dungeon.”

”Access is not ownership.”

”Exclusive study becomes ownership when no one else can verify what you learned.” Quin said.

Merrit changed the proposal. His technicians would receive copies of nonprivate measurements, permission to observe any safe examination, and compensation for consumed tools. Physical fragments would remain with the Last Orchard unless separate terms were negotiated after the danger ended.

Edrin accepted the arrangement.

Dagar asked what the Redoubt received.

”The same safety information.” Max replied. ”If the device can create a weapon inside controlled terrain, every dungeon benefits from understanding how the Last Orchard defeats it.”

”Information does not replace soldiers injured during someone else’s emergency.”

Edrin offered supplies, repair, and future access to Orchard medicines. Dagar wanted no payment in goods until he knew what his squad might spend.

They settled on recorded costs and a review after the operation. Assistance would not become a vague debt Dagar could claim years later. Edrin would reimburse reasonable losses he could afford, and the Concord would acknowledge any unpaid balance without granting control over territory or residents.

The final condition concerned the gate.

Medical responsibility required a separate clause. The Last Orchard maintained healers and ordinary infirmaries, but no resurrection system. Sanctuary’s combat healer would decide whether an injured member of the elite team could continue. Orchard healers retained authority over treatments performed in their facilities. No Dungeon Master could order a conscious patient to accept an unfamiliar procedure merely to keep the expedition moving.

Dagar extended the condition to his soldiers. Merrit required his technicians to name a representative capable of making evacuation decisions if one became unconscious.

The provisions seemed remote while everyone remained healthy. Quin insisted on recording them before pain and urgency gave someone else control over the choice.

Sanctuary would host the foreign side of the exchange because Max already maintained the Concord’s receiving room. No visitor or object from the Orchard would pass beyond the controlled chamber without inspection. Anna possessed authority to close the route if Max became occupied. Quin could order the receiving room evacuated and sealed, but final gate authority remained with Max.

”You trust people without Dungeon Master authority to interrupt an operation?” Edrin asked.

”I trust them to recognize when my attention is divided.” Max replied.

”What if they close the route while your people remain inside?”

”Then they will have a reason serious enough to prevent the danger from reaching Sanctuary.”

The captain showed no surprise. The elite team had volunteered knowing the gate was not an unconditional promise of rescue.

Edrin approved the terms.

The core displayed the agreement without recognizing it as a new concord obligation. The lack of system approval did not weaken the words. It only left enforcement to the people who had spoken them.

Preparation occupied the rest of the day.

The Thousand Works sent three technicians, compact detection frames, sealed collection tools, and two devices intended to disrupt sustained magic without releasing uncontrolled force. Merrit included a contract keeper who remained in Sanctuary rather than entering the Orchard.

Dagar selected five soldiers accustomed to fighting in confined passages. Their officer reviewed the command agreement with Veyrath and objected to none of it in public. His private questions concerned how quickly Edrin could reshape a road and whether a closed path could crush someone trapped inside.

The answer was yes.

Edrin insisted he had never used the terrain that way against a guest. The false commands made his past restraint less reassuring.

Sanctuary’s elite team entered first.

The gate opened against a reinforced wall in the receiving room. Beyond it waited a circular platform of pale wood surrounded by trees large enough to contain houses in their trunks. Branches crossed overhead like streets. Fruit the size of barrels hung beneath broad leaves, and narrow waterways ran through channels shaped from living roots.

Six Orchard wardens stood beyond a painted boundary. None carried drawn weapons.

The captain crossed with the scout and one defensive specialist. The gate remained open while they inspected the platform, the nearest routes, and the wardens’ identification marks.

”Receiving area secure.” the captain reported.

The rest of the elite team followed. Merrit’s technicians entered next, accompanied by two Redoubt soldiers. Dagar’s remaining squad crossed after their officer confirmed the earlier arrivals had not triggered any change in the terrain.

Veyrath waited in Sanctuary.

Max watched through reports rather than borrowed sight. He received positions, spoken observations, and the limited map Edrin allowed through the channel. The distance between knowledge and presence was uncomfortable. He could not look past a report or verify a sound. He had chosen not to enter, and the choice required him to trust the people who had.

The captain reached the first Orchard road.

A branch lowered from the canopy and formed a bridge toward the western district.

Edrin had not ordered it.

Every warden stepped away.

The bridge continued lowering until its end touched the platform.
