Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Dagar’s report arrived before the Iron Redoubt reopened its gate.

The old quarry conduit had appeared on records created before his dungeon claimed the fortress site. Engineers sealed the connection during the Redoubt’s early expansion and inspected the visible barrier each year. No one had surveyed the tunnel beyond it after the surrounding ground shifted.

The seal remained intact until the evacuation exercise opened dormant ventilation channels. Pressure moved through connected shafts, loosened damaged stone, and allowed the tunnel predators to reach the maintenance passage.

Dagar did not describe the event as unpredictable.

[We treated a barrier as secure because inspections confirmed the part we could see. We did not verify the ground supporting it or the passages beyond it. The failure belongs to the Redoubt.]

The report listed every conduit, sealed tunnel, drainage route, and abandoned foundation scheduled for inspection. The exchange gate would remain closed until Dagar completed the work affecting its courtyards.

Veyrath approved the response.

”He identified the failure, expanded the review to comparable structures, and kept the gate closed without waiting for us to demand it.”

Quin found one omission.

”The report does not state who previously had authority to order deeper inspections.”

”Does the answer change the correction?” Anna asked.

”It changes whether the same gap can return. If everyone inspected the visible seal because no one owned the connected ground, adding more inspections does not assign responsibility.”

Max sent the question to Dagar.

The answer came from the civilian quartermaster.

No office had owned abandoned structures beneath active walls. Engineers controlled current construction. Soldiers controlled defended passages. The quartermaster controlled civilian maintenance. The old conduit fell between them.

Dagar created a structural-survey office reporting jointly to engineering and defense. Its leader could close an affected route until both authorities addressed a discovered risk.

He also sent compensation records for the people affected by the breach.

Three residents had lost stored goods when soldiers cleared the eastern buildings. Two Redoubt soldiers required extended care. The maintenance worker injured during the first retreat could not return to duty for several weeks.

Dagar replaced the residents’ goods from his own stores. He credited the soldiers’ households with additional rations and assigned the injured worker paid survey duties once he could leave the hospital.

Max asked why those decisions appeared in a safety report sent to another dungeon.

Dagar answered through the channel.

[You asked what I do when something goes wrong. Repairing stone is only part of the answer.]

Max read the line to the leaders.

”He wants us to know he protects his people.” Hizon said.

”He wants his people to know it too.” Anna replied. ”We are only the audience he can admit he is trying to convince.”

Dagar’s pride made apology difficult. Responsibility gave him a language he could use instead.

Veyrath disliked shared control.

”When two authorities own a decision, each can believe the other acted.”

Quin agreed, which surprised him.

”The office owns the inspection and closure. Engineering and defense own the correction. The report now states who acts first.”

The structure was imperfect. It was no longer empty.

Dagar also offered compensation.

He would repay medical costs for Max’s guards, replace damaged equipment, and grant Sanctuary a block of future training access if Max approved the proposed fortress-training grounds.

No one in Max’s group had died. Two guards suffered minor injuries during the recovery. The Redoubt’s healers treated them before the team returned.

Max accepted replacement of the damaged equipment because safe conduct made Dagar responsible for material loss. He rejected payment for the trip itself and refused to treat future training access as compensation before the attraction existed.

”You are declining something valuable.” Hizon said.

”I am declining a promise whose value depends on future decisions.”

”Uncertain future value has never stopped most merchants.”

”Which is why Quin reads their contracts.”

Hizon still believed Max could have secured favorable terms. Max wanted the relationship to begin with clear responsibility rather than a debt Dagar might later feel entitled to recover through influence.

Max’s elite captain requested a private debrief.

She brought the combat assessment, the Redoubt route record, and no accusation.

”Stopping for the fallen changed our objective.” she said.

”I know.” Max replied.

”You asked whether recovery was possible. I gave you a plan. The plan succeeded.”

”You believe I made the wrong decision.”

”I believe you need to understand why I almost said no.”

The western route remained open for only a short time. Dagar diverted reserves to protect the junctions. If the breach expanded, Max’s team could have been trapped beyond the collapse with injured people they could not move quickly.

The captain had approved recovery because the creatures remained contained, the fallen lay within a shallow conduit, and the Redoubt could reinforce both junctions. Any one of those conditions changing would have made the attempt unacceptable.

”You looked at three people and a cost measured in minutes.” she said. ”I looked at the same people, your life, three million Dungeon Points, the guards descending into an unknown passage, and the route every one of us still needed.”

”I did not ignore those costs.”

”No. You asked me to carry them inside the answer.”

Her motivation was not obedience. She had accepted responsibility for bringing Max home. Every compassionate decision he made became a risk she had to measure without allowing the value of his life to erase everyone else’s.

”Would you have followed if I ordered the recovery after you refused?” Max asked.

”Yes. I would have stated my objection before acting.”

”And if the plan became impossible?”

”I would have ordered withdrawal. You could remove me from command afterward.”

Max understood why his combat team had to remain serious. Their role was not to affirm his courage. It was to preserve the dungeon’s future when emotion, pride, or incomplete information narrowed his view.

”You retain that authority during external travel.” Max said. ”If immediate conditions make the approved objective impossible, you order withdrawal. I can override you, but the record will show both decisions.”

The captain accepted.

”I also want the record to show why we stopped.” Max continued. ”The coordinator was helping people evacuate because the exercise exposed a real weakness. Leaving her without attempting a recovery would teach every civilian that our safest plan is for them to accept risk soldiers will not return.”

The captain considered the motivation.

”Then the recovery served more than three people.”

”It still could have failed.”

”Yes.”

Neither converted the choice into a simple lesson. The record preserved why Max accepted the risk and why the captain believed it remained manageable.

Dagar reopened written communication after the structural inspections reached the first courtyard.

He had another proposal.

The Redoubt would build a public training ground in the second courtyard. Visiting groups could learn formation movement, wall defense, evacuation under pressure, and protection of supply routes. They would not receive access to active fortifications or current military plans.

The defensive captain supported the attraction because outside teams would introduce unfamiliar tactics. The quartermaster supported it because visitors would create demand for lodging, food, and repairs without entering the residential wall.

Dagar supported it for a third reason.

[The Redoubt requires a purpose for remaining open that strengthens the walls instead of competing with them.]

He had not adopted Max’s belief that a dungeon must remain worth entering. He had found a version compatible with his own conviction that a dungeon existed to survive.

Max did not design the attraction for him.

He sent Veyrath’s public training standards and offered a future exchange of observers once the Redoubt completed its first internal trials.

Dagar accepted without requesting approval of the design.

The exchange gate reopened two days later for a final safety inspection. No merchants crossed. Redoubt engineers demonstrated the repaired conduits, structural monitors, and closure controls through the gate.

Quin asked who received each alarm.

The report named the structural-survey officer, defensive command, and affected local supervisor.

Veyrath asked who could reopen a closed route.

Engineering and defense both had to approve it. The structural office documented the decision.

Hizon asked when shipments could begin.

Dagar closed the demonstration map.

”After Max approves the trial.”

Max did.

The first exchange would open between Sanctuary and the Thousand Works for controlled trade, then between Sanctuary and the Iron Redoubt for invited shipments. No participant would enter a dungeon level during the opening period.

Dagar had responded to danger by tightening inspection and creating a reason to open his fortress deliberately.

Merrit responded to the reopening notice with six revised contracts and a list of tools ready for demonstration.

The same event had confirmed what each Dungeon Master already feared.

Dagar feared hidden weaknesses.

Merrit feared delay that allowed opportunity to disappear.

Max intended to build a trial capable of surviving both reactions.

Before the meeting ended, Dagar requested one more addition.

He wanted the Redoubt’s training ground built beside the second courtyard rather than hidden inside its military district. Residents could watch scheduled exercises, and civilian route coordinators could train with soldiers without entering restricted space.

”You changed the location.” Max said.

”The quartermaster changed my understanding of the purpose.” Dagar replied. ”A private ground improves soldiers. A visible one teaches residents what happens when an alarm sounds.”

”It also lets them see soldiers fail during training.”

”Then the soldiers will learn that authority does not require the appearance of perfection.”

The admission cost Dagar more than the construction.

Max approved the design assistance but refused to build the ground for him. Sanctuary would provide examples from its arenas and send Veyrath’s specialists for one consultation. The Redoubt would adapt the plans and pay its own workers.
